Interview with Author Colette Bos

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

I have been writing for quite a while, but more in technical writing, documentation, and editing through my website, www.writeforhire.com. However, it has only been in the past couple of years that I have felt confident enough to try writing a book.

I enjoy reading about the latest in science, technology, and science fiction, and with my degree in geography, I have always been interested in climate. So, I guess when searching for a theme to write a book, I chose Global Warming, which I felt combined all these interests.

Interestingly, it was only later that I discovered a genre based on these interests called Cli-Fi, which is short for (climate fiction). When I think back, I now realize that I needed this final boost back then to get me moving on at least an outline for the global warming fellowship idea for my book, Bon Echo and The Competition.

What inspired you to write your book?

I spent my early childhood in Kaladar, Ontario, Canada, where my parents owned the Kaladar Hotel. Our hotel was close to Bon Echo Provincial Park, so many of our guests who had travelled far to visit the park would stay overnight while sightseeing. Bon Echo is famous for its spectacular azure lake reflecting sunlight onto its golden cliffs at sunset.

Somehow, I must have stored a vision of this inspiring spectacle of nature as a child, forgotten its location, and then held it in my memory as a powerful childhood mystical experience. I have meditated on this calming vision throughout my life but could not recall where I acquired it. So, later in life, I decided to explore places with my husband from my childhood, including Kaladar and Mactier, a railroad town in Muskoka, where we lived before moving to Kaladar. This adventure quest was sad and yet very gratifying at the same time. It was heartbreaking to see the ruins of our old home in Mactier and, even more so, the broken-down remains of the hotel. The Ministry of Transportation demolished it in 2018, so I was grateful to see it one last time before it was gone forever.

Due to rainy weather, we had to return home before reaching Bon Echo Park. However, happy childhood memories flooded my mind as I told my husband about my childhood in Kaladar, visiting Bon Echo Park and feeding deer before crossing the park gates in my family’s car. Eventually, I followed up with online research and found my beautiful Bon Echo vision on my laptop in pictures of the shimmering sunlight reflecting on Mazinaw Rock. I traced this major event in my childhood to the source of my love for nature and why I felt drawn to geography at university. You can read the full story of my quest to find the inspiration for my Bon Echo series through this link: Northern Lights Publications

Bon Echo reflects the inspiration for a fictional setting in my Bon Echo series and on the adventures of Maven and her friends. Hopefully, it will inspire you to visit the real Bon Echo Park, as Bon Echo Bay is a fictional creation found within the pages of my book Bon Echo and The Competition.

What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

When I was approximately the age of five, I visited Bon Echo Park in Ontario with my family. I recall looking at the fantastic golden glow of the sun reflecting off the Mazinaw escarpment rock face. I must have been so awestruck by its beauty that I experienced a mystical connection of love emanating from the environment’s sheer beauty and maybe even Mother Nature herself. Of course, I’ll never know for sure what I experienced, but it was such a powerful experience that I carried that image and feeling of love throughout my entire life.

When I decided to try to write a book, the theme of fighting global warming seemed like the right choice for me. It felt like an opportunity to honour Mother Nature for all the love and peace I received from her over the years.

The most powerful message of my book is our need to protect and conserve our planet through fellowship because the earth is the only home that we can all say we genuinely share and need to save.

What drew you into this particular genre?

I have always been a big fan of all sorts of science fiction, from Star Wars, Star Trek, Dune, and all the TV science fiction series. So, I was pretty sure that if I were ever to write a book, science fiction/fantasy would be my first choice.

Advertisements

If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?

That’s an easy one! I would ask Maven a particular question related to her journey in discovering her passion in life. I would have asked her if her search would have had a time limit. Writing became my passion, but I didn’t realize it until much later. I would encourage Maven to never give up on her quest to find what ignites her love because it is such a powerful and energizing force in life, making it worth pursuing.

What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

I haven’t experimented too much with social media, but Facebook has been the most helpful in developing my readership.

What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

When I first started to write, I realized how much of a learning curve I had to tackle before even beginning to put pen to paper. I was a complete novice and seriously didn’t have a clue where to start. I felt it was best to research and learn the basics through the many excellent books and on the many varied writing subjects. So, if you are not well versed in grammar, terms, usages, and writing methodologies, I would start there. And of course, read, read, read, because we all build on the shoulders of others, and because nothing is new under the sun, I promise you will find so much inspiration in all your reading adventures. Also, if you are prepared to take on this journey, you will learn much about yourself as a writer and even start cultivating your unique writing voice.

What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

It has been a long trek and quite an adventure of the mind writing my first book, which has energized me even further to start outlining the second book in my Bon Echo science fiction series. The working title for this second book is Bon Echo and The Crystal Library, and I am coming up with all sorts of intriguing ideas on living history, artificial intelligence, and possible future climate change directions that may take place within this series. I have an enormous amount of research and notes that need organizing and outlining, which seem to take place in tandem because, as always, “the learning curve” can be its own adventure. I am currently digging in and looking forward to all the stepping stones of the writing process. Make everything an adventure, and you will never be bored, which is one of the true joys of imagination.

Daughter of Light and Dark (Rings and Chains Book 1) by Ahlam Faris Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young woman must collect eleven rings holding powerful Jinn kings in order to free her mother’s trapped jinn in author Ahlam Faris’s “Daughter of Light and Dark”, the first book in the Rings and Chains series.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

She wanted one thing and one thing only, to free her mother’s Jinn from his golden ring, but to free one is to free them all. Accompanied by her Jinny Companion, the Lord of chains, and a dark presence stirring to free from within her, Mina sets on a journey to find all the eleven golden rings of the Kings of Jinn, her main mission overshadowed by scheming royals, a troubled friend, and a crumbling world.

The Review

The world-building and mythos that the author brought to the story were incredibly presented. The Middle-Eastern mythology that became the backbone of this fantasy world brought the story to life thanks to the author’s mastery of imagery in the writing style. The action is immediately felt, taking the reader into the adventure as the protagonist seeks out the rings and cements herself as a hero.

The character development found in this narrative was top-notch. The tension that mounted as the journey got more and more dangerous allowed the relationship between characters like Zyed and Saif with the protagonist, Mina, to grow and prosper naturally. The magic and fantasy elements of the story allowed Mina’s heroic journey to flourish and prosper, giving readers a glimpse into the life that Mina led throughout her journey. The emotional connection to her mother also drove the narrative forward greatly, giving a glimpse into the heart of what makes Mina such a powerful protagonist to follow.

The Verdict

Action-packed, rich in mythos, and thrilling, author Ahlam Faris’s Daughter of Light and Dark is a must-read YA fantasy novel. How to Burn a Rainbow by Karl Dunn Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Karl Dunn shares with readers the ways in which his divorce spurred on a journey of self-discovery in the book “How to Burn a Rainbow”.

The Synopsis

What readers are calling the gay Eat, Pray, Love

Sometimes, to find yourself, you must first burn everything down.

Karl had it all; a husband, a home in the Los Angeles Hills, success. When his marriage ended suddenly, his perfect life and sense of self were shattered.

His legal battles threatened everything he had, and he soon found himself working non-stop, leading to a downward spiral filled with anxious days and sleepless nights of rage and fear.

Ironically, Karl’s divorce ignited a journey of self-discovery—a quest for identity, love, and acceptance that took him from LA to a mid-divorce crash-landing in Berlin.

This raw and unflinching memoir welcomes readers into the heart of Karl’s transformative journey—burning the scripts written for him by both the gay and straight worlds, facing down his deepest fears, and forging his own path to self-love.

How To Burn A Rainbow is a gripping narrative of resilience and courage that dares to ask the hard questions about love, equality, and the price of happiness.

In the end, Karl’s marriage didn’t make him whole, his divorce did.

The Review

In a heartfelt and compelling book, the author truly presented a relatable and honest account of the experiences he went through. The nuances of marriage, in any relationship, can be difficult to navigate, and adding the extra pressure of societal expectations for those in the LGBTQ community who finally found their right to get married and yet still experienced those pitfalls of any relationship was emotional to read and see unfold in the pages of this book. The insight into the painful process of divorce and the detail the author gives to readers is remarkable to gain insight on.

The author’s use of humor and wit in his writing style, as well as incredible detail and pop culture references, helps add a well-roundedness and sense of self to the author’s story. The almost cinematic nature of the author’s writing style and the raw moments that the author shares with readers help showcase the growth and self-discovery the author finds within himself as the book grows and evolves over time.

The Verdict

Memorable, heartfelt, and engaging author Karl Dunn’s “How to Burn a Rainbow” is a must-read memoir meets relationship and divorce book. The turmoil and heartbreak that the author expresses and the teachable lessons that can be found in this book lead to a meaningful book that showcases that sometimes pain and heartbreak can lead to pivotal moments of self-discovery and brighter futures. About the Author

I was born and still live in West Yorkshire, England, with my wife of over 52 years. We have two children and two grandchildren.

I spent most of my working life as a freelance writer, initially as a Technical Author in the IT industry and later writing magazine articles and website content. I’ve long had an ambition to write a novel but the need to pay off the mortgage and support my family meant I needed a more reliable source of income.

Now I’m past retirement age, I’ve at last been able to achieve my ambition. The result is my first published novel, “The Itch That Couldn’t Be Scratched”.

It’s a tale of obsession, of one man’s quest to seek justice for a woman he never knew and the effect on his relationship with his wife and family. It also explores how decisions we make, usually with the best of intentions, can have unforeseen and unfortunate consequences.

I’m currently working on my next book, a sequel to the first one. Whether this ever gets published may depend on how the first one goes.

The Review

The author did such an incredible job of world-building in this narrative. From the book’s first chapter, readers are already immersed in this story of intrigue and magic, giving readers a glimpse at the road the protagonist will travel. The world itself was very well developed, as readers were treated to a narrative perfectly laced with imagery in the author’s writing to bring these pivotal moments and this fantastic world to life.

The protagonist’s evolution throughout the many centuries of his life and the physical and emotional toll that his experiences take on him is something the reader feels greatly throughout this novel. The scale of the story captures the essence of a great epic fantasy, and the bond and emotional connection with Kryn’s brother Adro or the line of morality and philosophy that separates Kryn from the Seraphs and Andromia all showcase the tension and conflict that drives Kryn towards his ultimate destiny.

About the Author

A child of the eighties, my mother gave me a copy of Robert Jordan’s Eye of the World when I was twelve, thereby introducing me to the world of epic fantasy and dooming me to countless sublime hours sojourning in worlds other than my own.

Since that first fateful day I’ve also read Anne McCaffrey, Tad Williams, Brandon Sanderson, Jim Butcher, Steven Erikson, Frank Herbert, David Farland, and more. The trouble was, I loved reading so much I decided to try my hand at writing as well.

That in and of itself wasn’t a problem, at least not until I got hooked. I realized just how dire my situation was one fall evening when my family invited me over to watch a movie. Truth be told, I can’t even recall what the movie was, only that I didn’t especially like it. However, I distinctly remember an annoyed feeling as the credits rolled, not because I hadn’t liked the film, but because I could have edited half a chapter in the time I’d wasted.

That was, perhaps, one of the most chilling moments of my life, as I realized just how deep I’d been bitten by the writing bug. But there was nothing for it but to press on. So I set to work.

Over the next ten years, I gave up on TV, movies, and all too often sleep, wringing every hour of writing I could from my schedule. During that time, it was my pleasure to meet a host of fantastic writers, editors, and artists, including David Farland, whom it was my great privilege to work with. Of course, I’d be remiss not to thank my family, who were ever supportive while I climbed this peak.

When I’m not writing, I love a good camping hike (so long as there’s enough trees to hang my hammock). I also volunteer as a sled dog handler, and I have a long standing love affair with fast cars and lonely mountain roads.

However, appearances may be deceiving. The line between grappling with inner demons and becoming one is blurred. The beasts that were once buried deep down are now breaking free.

The Dark Mountain is the second book in the series The Rise of Penumbra.

This is a YA/NA dark fantasy adventure with no explicit content.

The Review

This was such a compelling and gripping sequel. The change in perspective for this series, following the humans being trained to fight the war with the star people, was a unique and fresh change of pace, giving readers a new look at the world of Adama. The author’s use of imagery in their writing style puts the fictional world into a creative frame of mind, transporting the reader into the heart of the Dark Mountain and more.

The chemistry between Kadmiel and Ranan was so engaging, as it showed how they both evolved and grew over time, and the bond they formed shaped the direction the story took overall. The mystery and intrigue that Kadmiel found himself in, especially towards the book finale and the partnership with Naomi, will add depth to the lore of this world, and the grim reality of the society that runs many of the Star People will put the human’s perspective in a whole new light.

The Verdict

Memorable, heartfelt, and enthralling author Yona Katz’s “The Dark Mountain” is a must-read LGBTQ-driven fantasy and a promising sequel. The narrative’s twists and turns, some characters’ mysterious fates, and the return of some fan favorites from the first book will keep readers invested until the book’s final page, eager for the climactic conclusion of this trilogy. Taking Time: A Tale of Physics, Lust and Greed by Mike Murphey Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

An unlikely candidate for time travel pioneer finds himself thrust into the spotlight as both the military and corporate sides of the projects funding go to war with one another in author Mike Murphey’s “Taking Time”, the first book in the Physics, Lust and Greed series.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

The year is 2044. Housed in a secret complex beneath the eastern Arizona desert, a consortium of governments and corporations have undertaken a program on the scale of the Manhattan Project to bludgeon the laws of physics into submission and make time travel a reality. Fraught with insecurities, Marshall Grissom has spent his whole life trying not to call attention to himself, so he can’t imagine he would be remotely suited for the role of time travel pioneer. He’s even less enthusiastic about this corporate time-travel adventure when he learns that nudity is a job requirement. The task would better match the talents of candidates like the smart and beautiful Sheila Schuler, or the bristle-tough and rattlesnake-mean Marta Hamilton. As the project evolves into a clash between science and corporate greed, conflicts escalate. Those contributing the funding are mostly interested in manipulating time travel for profit, and will stop at nothing, including murder, to achieve their goals.

The Review

I am a big fan of time travel sci-fi stories, and this one hits that genre perfectly. The rich character interactions and relationships brought humor and intrigue to this narrative, as did the engaging use of imagery in the author’s writing style. The vast world-building and atmosphere that the author created instantly make the reader feel immersed in the story.

The two things that made this story stand out the most are the technical aspects of the time travel elements and the themes of corporate greed and government oversight. Early on in the book, the use of time travel shows the characters merging with their past selves, giving a different take on the time travel story. Meanwhile, the exploration of how corporations and governments interact with one another, the drawback of greed taking hold, and how it impacts the work being done made this a thoughtful first entry into this series.

The Verdict

Memorable, thoughtful, and engaging author Michael Murphey’s “Taking Time” is a must-read sci-fi novel. The detail and incredible world the author created, along with the blend of humor and wit in the dialogue, helped push through the twists and turns this narrative needed and made for a brilliant first chapter in this series.
