Guest Blog Post: What Iโ€™m Writing Now, Now That My Novel Is on the Shelves By Madeline Sharples

Hey everyone, Author Anthony Avina here. I’m honored today to be sharing with you this guest blog post from author Madeline Sharples, author of the recently reviewed book, Papa’s Shoes, in association with Women on Writing Tours. I hope you all will enjoy it and please make sure to comment on this post and share it as well. Enjoy everyone.

I didnโ€™t think I had another book in me after I finished my novel, Papaโ€™s Shoes. Writing that took a long time even though I didnโ€™t work on it straight through all those nine years. But when I had finished the tenth revision, I felt my book writing days were over.

However, I started to get itchy to write something else when I started querying publishers โ€“ exactly what I did in 2010. I started my novel while I was querying publishers for my memoir, Leaving the Hall Light On.

I took one look in the mirror and realized from my aging face that Iโ€™m at that stage in my life when I have almost all of it to look back on. I just turned seventy-nine, and my mirror told me I looked it.

So I thought I could write a memoir from an old wise womanโ€™s approach to turning eighty. I could write about the secrets of staying married to the same man for forty-nine years and living in the same house for forty years. Really where have all those years gone? And really that brings up another big question โ€“ how much time do my husband and I have left anyway, and what are we doing to prepare for our last years? Or better yet, how weโ€™re handling our lives right now as we age โ€“ each at a different paces. Yes, I decided another memoir or even two are a real possibility. The options are endless: how weโ€™re still working at surviving the loss of our son in 1999, what we eat, how we sleep, my health and exercise program, about our travels, and what do we do all day at our age.

Another thing that triggered my decision to write this new memoir is the many people my age who are sick or have died. Just yesterday I heard about the death of a wonderful work colleague and friend much younger than me who died of a massive heart attack. With those facts in mind I decided to bring aging healthy into the book. I am very fit for my age. I workout every day and eat healthy. Why couldnโ€™t I write a memoir about aging healthy?

I hope readers will take a good look at themselves and what they are doing to live the rest of their lives successfully. I hope they will take my examples about what to do and what not to do as I age seriously. For example, I recently spent a few days with my cousin who is four years younger than I. She is out of shape and doesnโ€™t eat very healthy. But while I was with her we took long, fast walks every day, and sheโ€™s still taking them even though Iโ€™m not with her. She says I was an inspiration to her. I hope to be an inspiration to all my readers.

I also have to contend with the hardest parts to write: 1) the lasting effects of our older sonโ€™s suicide death in 1999, 2) my married son and daughter-in-lawโ€™s decision to live a married life without children, and 3) some regrets about decisions Iโ€™ve made over the years. I know all of us have life experiences that are hard to write and talk about. We also have regrets. Hopefully my writing about these things will engage my readers in thinking how theyโ€™ve lived their own lives and what they can improve on for their futures.

So far, Iโ€™ve written the first draft to this brief outline:

PART ONE

  1. What stage of life I am in right now
  2. A little looking back โ€“ maybe incorporate my reunion experiences of seeing old classmates and being in the neighborhoods where I grew up
  3. What I see when I look in the mirror

  5. What I do to take care of myself
  6. How much I like my privacy and alone time

About the Book:

Papaโ€™s Shoes, a work of fiction about immigration with a feminist and historical bent. At 99,968 words, Papaโ€™s Shoesis a stand-alone novel with series potential.

Ira Schuman is determined to move his family out of their Polish shtetl to the hope and opportunities heโ€™s heard about in America. But along the way he faces the death of three of his four sons, a wife who does not have the same aspirations as his, and the birth of a daughter, Ava, conceived to make up for the loss of his boys. Ava grows up to be smart, beautiful, and very independent.

Besides having a feisty relationship with her overly-protective mother, Ava falls for the college man who directs her high school senior class play. With the news that she wants to marry a non-Jewish man, Ira realizes that his plan to assimilate in the new world has backfired. Should the young couple marry, he must decide whether to banish his daughter from his family or welcome them with open arms. Even though he wonโ€™t attend their wedding, he makes her a pair a wedding shoes. In his mind, theshoes are simply a gift, not a peace offering.

A longer synopsis

On a cold and pouring night in Sokolow Poland, Ira Schuman carefully steps over the red mud puddles on the streets, sad, weary, and soaked. He dreads what heโ€™ll find when he arrives at his two-room house in the Jewish section of the stetl. He envisions his mourning wife, Ruth, angry he wasnโ€™t home when three of their four boys died during a flu epidemic.

As he enters the silence in what was once a home full of the loud voices and cries of little boys is deafening. However, he canโ€™t wait to embrace Ruth, comfort her despite his own grief, and tell his surviving son about his love for America.

Iraโ€™s goal is to become Americanized and bring whatโ€™s left of his family to a small town in Illinois, when he has enough money and an established business. Ruth doesnโ€™t want to leave Poland and the graves of their three dead sons.

After their initial cold and difficult reunion, Ira keeps his promise to impregnate Ruth before he goes back to Illinois. Three years later he sends her the money to follow him to Illinois with their son age 10 and little girl, Ava, age three. Ruth agrees to leave Poland because of fears that the Russian army will recruit her son.

After a short stay in Chicago, the family moves to Danville IL, where Ira joins his brother in their shoe-making business. Though free of his long hair, beard and forelocks, and wearing modern clothes without the four-cornered yarmulke he threw into the Atlantic Ocean, Ira wants to bring a semblance of Orthodox Jewish life to his family and his new town. He creates a synagogue, hires a rabbi, and arranges the delivery of kosher meats. He also begins an affair with a chubby but curvy redheaded widow. Ruth, who smothers Ava and tries to keep her a little girl, has grown fatter and more unkempt, always wearing the same tight-fitting black dress she wore in Sokolow. She wants no part of Iraโ€™s synagogue work.

Ruth keeps her hold on Ava, antagonizing her daughter. They argue continuously throughout Avaโ€™s school years. Ava gets the lead in her senior high school play, and she and the director, a student at the local college, strike up a relationship โ€“ she tells her parents they are just friends when he picks her up to take her to school events.

Her brother, in law school in Chicago at nights and working in the textile business during the day, comes home and warns his parents that if they donโ€™t move her away from this gentile, he will take her to Chicago himself. Ira agrees to let Ava go; Ruth does not. In the end her brotherโ€™s argument wins. Ava, ever respectful of her parents and out of her love for her brother, tells her director friend that she must leave. They are devastated but stay away from each other until the day before her departure.

In Chicago, Avaโ€™s brother introduces her to a suitable man. Heโ€™s a bit of a milk toast, messy, and not very motivated in school or business, but heโ€™s nice and attentive so she goes out with him for quite some time. Her rationale is that dating him will protect her from meeting someone she could actually fall for. She also experiences the modern ways of young women in the 1920s. She goes to dance halls and speakeasies, speaks flap talk, works as a seamstress, designs her own short and swingy dresses, and lives freely away from her mother. Her suitor proposes, but Ava says, โ€œWhat a pretty little ring,โ€ instead of yes.

After continued pleas from her director friend and her still undying love for him, Ava returns to Danville as a mature and determined young woman. She withstands a blow-up with her parents when she tells them she wants to marry her gentile friend. Ira throws her out.  That night he goes to the synagogue to say the mournerโ€™s kadish for his daughter but decides to break up with the red-headed widow and mourn his relationship with her instead. To assuage his guilt, he makes her a pair of shoes that she wears at her wedding.

While Ava is sad not to have her family with her at her wedding, she is hopeful that her mother and father will come around. Her biggest fear is that she will never see her brother again, the man she loved and looked up to all her growing up years. However, she is happy with her decision to marry her love no matter how they feel.

Interview with Author Rina Z. Neiman

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

Iโ€™ve worked in music, fashion, high tech, and retail. Writing has always been an element of my professional career.

What inspired you to write your book?

My motherโ€™s life inspired this book, and the understanding that her story was so deeply intertwined with the establishment of the State of Israel. Sadly, she died when I was eleven years old, and I was too young to know what questions to ask. Following my fatherโ€™s death years later, I discovered her photographs and documents, most of which I had never seen before. Under pictures of best friends and boyfriends, whose names weโ€™d never know (or how they affected her), I found an illustrated sketch book by her brother. Avraham was the uncle we never met, but knew was her best friend. The book tells the story of a trip they took to the Galilee in 1947. For the first time, I had an inside view into the most significant relationship in my motherโ€™s life, and an intimate portrait of her as a 17-year-old. I wanted to tell not only her story, but the story of the Sabra generation, the first generation of modern-day Israelis.

What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

  • We are from our birthplace.
  • The importance of family and community.
  • War is about losing loved ones.
  • Resilience in the face of adversity is key to survival.
  • What led to the establishment of the State of Israel. The events in Europe during WWII had repercussions that affected the whole world.
  • A portrait of the unique Sabra generation.

What drew you into this particular genre?

I began this project as a straight biography, but quickly found it was not possible to corroborate particular facts about my motherโ€™s life. It also became clear that there was a broader story to tell about the time period and her generation. Iโ€™ve always found historical fiction compelling to read, and love that it can transport you to a different time and place.

What I like about writing an historical fiction novel is that there is a timeline of events that I was able to follow. I could intertwine those events in ways that I knew, or had to imagine, affected my mother. Hereโ€™s an example: While researching the time (1940s), and place (Tel Aviv), I came across an incident that happened in 1941 that I never knew about. My mother never spoke about it, and it wasnโ€™t mentioned in most of the histories of Tel Aviv. Shortly after the Italians entered WWII, an squadron of Italian planes dropped bombs on my motherโ€™s neighborhood killing 137 people. Even though I didnโ€™t know how it affected my mother, it became clear to me that this was a scene that I had to write. What would it be like to be a 12-year-old girl caught in such a frightening event?

What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

Facebook and Instagram for now, and Iโ€™m working on my Twitter presence. With my WOW blog tour, I can see how effective the world of book blogs can be.

What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

  • Take classes in writing. Learn the craft.
  • Create a timeline with an outline. Thatโ€™s your path.
  • Find a writing group.
  • Write THE END. Are you sure? Better check it one more timeโ€ฆ
  • Polish your final piece.

Self-marketing is part of the publishing world now. The best way to create interest in your story is to find like-minded people, and promote to those you are connected with. Network with other writers, writing groups and organizations that may have an interest in your work.

What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

I have two projects that Iโ€™m currently outlining. There is a sequel to Born Under Fire that follows Shula in Manhattan in the 1950s, and her work at the first Israeli consulate in New York. And, because itโ€™s based on my mother, the highs are high and the lows are devastating.

The second is a music-centered novel that takes place in New York in the early 1970s.

Guest Blog Post: How to Research For Historical Fiction Novels by Author Rina Z. Neiman

When I took on writing an historical novel, I knew that research was going to be a top priority before any serious writing even began. Here are some of the ways and sources I used to research the background for Born Under Fire, which takes place from 1934-1949 under the British Mandate of Palestine.

  • A majority of my story takes place in the city of Tel Aviv, and I was able to make a trip to Israel early on in the research process. Walking the streets where scenes in the book occur was a way to soak in the smells, sights and sounds of a place, which I could later transfer to the story. I conducted several in-person interviews with her friends and relatives, which were invaluable to verify facts and get a feel for how certain events transpired.
  • Firsthand accounts from this time period were available through books and websites. By searching topics such as โ€œBritish troops stationed in Palestine 1940sโ€ I was able to find actual accounts and photos of veterans from that era. Reading these accounts gave me a good understanding of how a particular group of people felt about events happening at the time.
  • Movies from that era and historical documentaries gave me a sense of what it was like at the time, and there is nothing better than hearing about an event than from the people that were there. Above and Beyond: The Untold True Story gave me a wonderful history of the birth of the Israel Air Force that I used as background for one of the main characters.
  • Director Steven Spielbergโ€™s The Spielberg Collection is an invaluable source for Jewish themed films and newsreels. Newsreels with narration give a sense of what public perception was about a particular event of the day.

  • Reading original archived newspaper reports about an event are accessible via the internet or your local library. For Jewish-themed newspapers, the Historical Jewish Press archives is a great resource. There are websites of newspaper archives depending on your area of interest, and your local library has loads of resources that you can use.

For a full list of resources and links I used for my novel, see: https://www.bornunderfire.com/links

Energetic Selling & Marketing

Name of the book:  Energetic Selling & Marketing

Introduced by: Lenka Lutonska

Genre: Self Help

Release Date: 22nd March 2019

BLURB

How many times have you asked yourself: “Why does my business seem so hard? Why am I struggling, when other women make it look so easy?”

I understand, because once upon a time, I was you. But thatโ€™s not where I am any more.

What changed? I did.

When I started to pay more attention to the spiritual nature of my business and trusting my intuition, remarkable things unfolded. By focusing energetically on five critical areas of my business, I began to experience rapid growth. And so my principles of ENERGETIC SELLING AND MARKETING were born.

In ENERGETIC SELLING AND MARKETING, International Business & Mindset Strategist Lenka Lutonska shares the powerful principles that she has developed over many years of coaching clients to exceptional business growth. Born from her experience that tactics and strategies alone will not create extraordinary results in business, she inspires entrepreneurs to take a deeper, more energetic approach. When the two are are integrated, not only are mindset and communication techniques improved, but sales and marketing strategies become transformed, resulting in the greatest and fastest growth possible.

Results have often been nothing short of miraculous – women increasing their fees five times and selling with greater ease than ever before; women booking themselves solid with their ideal high-end clients; women turning their annual income into their monthly income; and women doubling, tripling or even quadrupling their sales revenues within several months.

With a foreword by CEO Penny Power, OBE, this book is an essential read for any entrepreneur who wants to open their minds to the possibility of extraordinary growth and create lasting and aligned business success.

Lenka Lutonska is an International Coach, Speaker & Master NLP trainer. She came to the UK from her native Slovakia aged just 19, where she found work in McDonalds. After having worked her way up to become an award-winning manager, she used the world-class sales training sheฤ…d received to set up her own business. Despite its significant growth, it was all lost overnight, when she was betrayed by her business partner.

Faced with starting all over again, but this time with a young family to support, she knew she had to take a different, more courageous and heart-centred approach. The result is her very successful coaching consultancy, whose success far outstrips anything else she had achieved prior to developing her principles of energetic selling.

She now uses her strategic business experience, her NLP and psychology training and her intuition and spirituality to take clients to multiple 6- and 7-figure revenues that not only transform their businesses but change their lives.

Excerpt

To my surprise, she wasnโ€™t excited about my generous and affordable coaching offer. โ€˜Iโ€™ll think about it,โ€™ were her exact words. Several days later, she emailed to say she had decided not to go ahead at this time. Ouch!

About a year later, she approached me again. This time, I proposed a coaching package at eight times the fee I had quoted previously. She pulled out her credit card and paid in full, and we entered a thriving coaching relationship. This is a real example of two sales conversations, one year apart, with very different outcomes! Exactly the same client; exactly the same needs; exactly the same coaching offer; except priced very differently. What had changed? What made the difference? I had changed and, more precisely, my energy had changed. When she had approached me the first time, I was in a place of scarcity. I was trying to rebuild my once-successful business.

At that time, as far as I was concerned, any client was a blessing. I started each sales conversation hoping that I would get it right this time.  When I spoke to the same woman a year later, I was no longer functioning like that. I no longer held sales conversations with clients hoping and praying that it would work out this time. I no longer tried to prove to my potential clients that I would be the best coach they could hire. Hoping, praying, proving โ€ฆ you would think you can keep these things secret. After all, we think these things in our heads, and no one can hear those thoughts, right? Well, not so fast. Any form of insecurity affects your personal energy field; and your potential client will pick up on this energy, whether they are consciously aware of it or not.

KNOW ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Q. 1 What was your inspiration for writing this book?

My own journey of building a successful business, losing it abruptly and having difficulties rebuilding it again.  I found that traditional marketing and selling methods didnโ€™t work by themselves as I was missing the confidence that every successful entrepreneur should have.  Once I started to tap into my spiritual nature and apply spiritual principles into my business, it started to bloom and grow rapidly.  I have taught hundreds of women these principles, often with extraordinary results โ€“ some women doubling, tripling, even quadrupling their sales revenues within months, sometimes even weeks.  I write about these priniciples and how to apply them in the book.

Q.2 What is the biggest challenge a seller faces nowadays?

“Iโ€™d love to work with you but I canโ€™t afford you” is one of the most common challenges women face when selling.  In Energetic Selling and Marketing, I describe how words alone are often not enough to break this pattern or overcome this challenge successfully and how by adopting a new attitude about what selling means can dramatically transform the outcome of sales conversations.

Q.3 Can you share an instance where you turned a challenge into an opportunity?

After I had lost my first business and was trying to get my second business to work, I went to get some cash out at the ATM to buy dinner for my family, only to find that I had just ยฃ7.30 left in my bank account.  I was hugely embarrassed by this.  I was an apparently successful businesswoman yet, I couldnโ€™t afford to put dinner on the table for my family.  That day, I ran home and called everyone I could think of for the whole day and made ยฃ1800. From that day on, I started to sell daily and stopped avoiding this important activity rather than shying away from it.

Q.4 What is your advice to new marketers?

Develop and learn to trust your intuition – it is your most powerful coach on the planet – and get the support you deserve from mentors to any other kind of support you need in your business and life.

Q. 5 What are you working on next?

Before I dive into writing another book, I am working on getting Energetic Selling and Marketing into the hands of as many people as possible because it has the ability to completely transform their businesses and their lives.

Guest Post: Anatomy of a Thriller by Author Linda Lee Kane

Anatomy of a Thriller 1

The Black Madonna,
A Popeโ€™s Deadly Obsession

The Hanged Man

Toulouse, France 1209

Guilhelm de Montanhagol, a Knights Templar knew his death was imminent. Few who entered the halls of torment emerged whole in mind or body. For six years, Bishop Folques had kept him imprisoned in a small cell in Toulouse. Condemned as a heretic, heโ€™d suffered the agony of the rack on several occasions.

He reflected on the last time Folques visited him in the dungeon. He had been splayed on a board, tied down at the wrists and ankles. Rollers at each end of the board slowly turned, pulling his body in opposite directions until every joint dislocated. He could no longer sit or stand. He slept, ate, and wasted away in his own filth. His once fine kirtle and linen shirt were just rags wrapped around his body for warmth.

His thoughts turned to his lover, Esclarmonde. Thinking of his her comforted him in his last hours,. Esclarmondeโ€™s skin was the color of alabaster, her shimmering blonde hair, highlighted with wisps of silver, cascaded down her body. She favored floor-length, loosely fitted gowns, usually of blue. He longed to thread his hands through her hair one last time. Her emerald -green eyes shimmered with love for him. Esclarmonde was strong. She would get the codex, written by Mary Magdalene, safely away.

Guilhelm was at peace in this knowledge. He was ready to accept his impending death. His tormentors had beaten him down mentally and physically. Esclarmonde was gone. His brotherโ€™s in the Knights Templar were dead and gone. There was no hope, only the desire to die and end the suffering.

Soldiers came, stripped him of the last of his ragged clothing, then dragged him from his meager cell. He had been wearing the same clothes he had worn since Pope Innocent III had him thrown into this God-forsaken hell. They hung him upside down by one leg, creating the sensation of a crucifixion. In time, this posture would inhibit and exhaust the muscles required for breathing. They stretched him in one direction, while gravity and his body weight worked against him. Exhaustion would eventually set in, and he would die. They do this to traitors, he thought angrily, but he was not a traitor. He was a Knights Templar and had sworn an oath never to kill a Christian. The pope believed if one was not of the Orthodox Christian faith, then that person was a heretic and should pay for his crimes against the church. Today, Folques, dressed in monkโ€™s attire, came to offer Guilhelm a last salvation if he would only give up his loverโ€™s secret, the treasure hidden by the Cathars, people who practiced a religion the pope had declared war against in 1208.

โ€œYou must be getting desperate, Folques,โ€ Guilhelm whispered weakly. โ€œI have not seen you in years. Have the Cathars escaped with the secret that you want so desperately so you can protect the pope and the Roman religion?โ€

โ€œGuilhelm, tell me where the treasure is hidden, and I will spare you from being tortured further,โ€ Folques coaxed, while nervously shuffling a deck of cards in his hands.

โ€œI believe the end is near, Bishop. I have nothing to gain and everything to lose in telling you anything. I would lose my soul if you were to extort that from me,โ€ Guilhelm proclaimed defiantly.

Folques held out a card for Guilhelm who strained through blurred vision to see its face. He saw what appeared to be a young woman holding open the jaws of a lion., Heโ€™s discovered cards, he thought. He blinked back the salty sweat rolling down his face, trying to see more clearly.

The image faded and he saw a Roman pontiff holding a staff, crowned by the Yellow Cross of the Cathars. The next card Folques pulled from the deck displayed a burning tower with its defenders leaping to their deaths. Visions of the cards floated past Guilhelm with greater speed, a blur of scenes he could barely distinguish through his battered eyes. Did this mean that -Esclarmonde plan had worked? His mind leaped with joy as his body grew weaker. God bless Esclarmonde.

โ€œWho is this woman?โ€ Folques demanded again.

The question roused Guilhelm from his anguished thoughts. The guards yanked his head back by his hair. He saw Foulques displaying a card with a hand-painted miniature of his beloved Esclarmonde.

โ€œWe found these playing cards being copied and passed from city to city like holy relics by gypsies. What is their purpose?โ€ Folques demanded.

Guilhelm suddenly turned away, realizing which card Folques was holdingโ€”the one that depicted the seated priestess. She held a scroll bearing the letterโ€™s tarot. Esclarmonde created these cards to preserve the teachings of the Cathars for future generations. The scroll protected by the High Priestess would one day turn the world upside-down, but only if the truth was known.

Two burly guards cut Guilhelm down and let him drop hard to the ground. Grabbing him by his arms, they picked him up and gripped his head, turning it to face the pyre. He felt the intense heat and smelled the smoke. He envisioned Esclarmonde calling out to him.

He had withstood more pain than most men could have. Completely worn out, he longed only to be with his lover one day in the Hereafter.

โ€œTell me, Guilhelm, now,โ€ ordered Folques.

Guilhelm forced a slight smile on his dry, cracked lips, knowing that, one day, the truth about the Cathars and the treasure would be known.

โ€œYour god is waiting for you and every other Cathar,โ€ Folques spit out with disgust. โ€œI will find the treasure of the Cathars if it takes killing every one of you.โ€ He turned to the guards. โ€œHe might as well burn. He is useless to me.โ€

Black Madonna: A Popeโ€™s Deadly Obsession by Linda Lee Kane Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A lifetime of tragedy leads a young woman into a centuries old battle between two ancient orders over a secret that could change the world forever in author Linda Lee Kaneโ€™s โ€œBlack Madonna: A Popeโ€™s Deadly Obsessionโ€. Here is the synopsis.

The Synopsis

Luci de Foix was nine when her parents were killed in a car accident. But was it an accident? Unbeknownst to Luci, a group known as The Order, under the protection of the Pope, has been watching her family for many years, waiting for the day that a diary written in the thirteenth century would be delivered to her family-a journal that contains a key to a lost codex-and they would do anything to get it. Early one morning, when Luci is twenty-nine, a bloodied young man delivers a book, claiming itโ€™s from her late grandparents.

Plagued by panic attacks that have left her crippled, Luci struggles to overcome her fears, avenge the death of their family, and search for the lost codex. But who can she trust? Everyone seems intent on betraying her, even the gorgeous, enigmatic Max, a man with secrets of his own.

The Review

This was a fast paced, action packed history thriller like no other. The mystery of the novel comes in two parts: the first being the mystery behind the secret the church has been chasing all these centuries, and the second being who was being the deaths of Luciโ€™s parents and others in her life. The story thrives when it delves into the mythology aspect of the narrative, which readers will find refreshing as it flips the book on specific aspects of religion and history when it comes to the Catholic Church.

Exploring aspects like how Tarot Cards were marked as โ€œevilโ€ by the Church, the secret teachings of Jesus of Nazareth (whether you believe in him as the Lord or are interested from a historical standpoint, this book will fascinate you regardless), and the lengths an organization will go to in order to maintain power and control, this novel features a truly amazing narrative. While there are some great character developments in this novel, it is the mystery and mythology of the book that really shines through, showcasing a powerful command over history and religionโ€™s impact on humanity overall on the authorโ€™s part.

The Verdict

This is a must read novel for any historical fiction and mystery fans out there. Filled with action, suspense and a twisting plot that will leave readers on the edge of their seat, this is a unique read that readers rarely glimpse in the historical fiction genre. The Beginnerโ€™s Guide To Winning An Election by Michael R. French Review & Author Spotlight

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

One young womanโ€™s goal of learning as much about politics as possible leads her down a path of betrayals, lies and shocking revelations that leads her to take on the establishment in author Michael R. Frenchโ€™s โ€œThe Beginnerโ€™s Guide to Winning An Electionโ€. Here is the synopsis.

The Synopsis

In 2025, the โ€œyouthificationโ€ of democracy has inspired younger candidates to challenge the ineffective and hypocritical gray-hairs in Congress. Running for student body president at an Indiana high school, political novice Brit Kitridge takes on incumbent Matthew Boltanski, who, with help from a mystery backer, already has his eyes set on Washington. Brit gains courage and insights from a wise history teacher on how to win, but ultimately finds a maze of deceit and corruption in her school. Is exposing the truth enough to win the election?

The Review

This coming of age YA drama was a fantastic exploration of the political system. Exploring a near future that sees backroom deals, corruption and scandal make its way from the halls of Washington all the way to a small high school in Indiana, the author expertly showcases the struggle to retain your morality and principles when fighting against money and power. In an age in which we now see more and more lies and corruption within our own government coming to light, this novel does a fantastic job of bringing the delicate nature of politics and intricacies of not only running for office, but holding office as well to younger generations, especially those who will be in a position to vote in just a couple yearโ€™s time.

The story itself is powerful, not only blending these themes and moral quandaries to the reader, but creating a narrative that is nearly cinematic in its approach. The characters are realistic, intriguing and hold the readers attention throughout the entirety of the novel. Yet itโ€™s the powerful imagery used by the author to not only showcase the natural setting of the school and city this book takes place in, but to build an image of the emotions and complex state of the students and main characters as they go through this election, that really shines brightly throughout this book.

The Verdict

This is a must read YA, coming of age novel in 2019. An important message followed by a powerful narrative and memorable characters, author Michael R. French has created a stand-alone novel that grabs the readerโ€™s attention and manages to wrap up the characterโ€™s stories beautifully, all the while allowing the reader to bond with these characters enough to ponder their fictional futures. Endorsements

โ€œMichael French has penned a fascinating, fast-paced, futuristic story about a determined high school senior named Brit who runs an against-all-odds campaign for student body president. There are scenarios that bedevil the imagination: dirty tricks, cyber and other tech attacks, love intrigues, and a picture of how the personal  growth of one individual can shape a collective future. As a politician with several elections under my belt, I couldnโ€™t put the novel down.โ€

โ€œPolitics and kids. Michael R. French knows them in everyday life and in high school. Politics squeeze the kids, and the kids squeeze back. โ€œMichael R. French weaves a frighteningly plausible tale of political and educational corruption and gives us a heroine worthy of exploring, uncovering, and confronting it.  Like all great heroes, she stumbles into her quest but then grows into knowing the power of honesty, principles, truth, and teamwork in pursuing it. This is a novel for anyone who honors history, idealism, and courage in the face of our countryโ€™s current political, economic, educational, and moral challenges.โ€

โ€œA wise, provocative novel about an Indiana high school student body election in a 2025 post-Orwellian universe. A political novice, a science whiz named Britain, is surprisingly motivated to take on the establishment favorite, who may not be who he claims to be. Here Michael French, one of todayโ€™s greatest writers for young adults, gives us a realistic page turner with complex themes that intrigues adults, too.โ€

โ€œThe Beginnerโ€™s Guide to Winning an Election, a captivating novel, follows the story of Britain, a senior in high school who runs a daring campaign for student body president in the year 2026. The brilliance of this work is that wrapped into its easy-to-follow and easily relatable narrative are deep political and socioeconomic messages that can be foundational in understanding politics and also offer new perspective on the current status of US politics. I recommend this incredibly engaging book for readers thirteen and up, and even schools that wish to teach students more about the high privilege and honor it is to be able to vote and have a political voice in our country.โ€

โ€œAn inspirational novel, A Beginnerโ€™s Guide to Winning an Election examines Americaโ€™s broken political system through the lens of a student body presidential election at a midwestern high school. From the issue of dark moneyโ€™s influence on our elections to convincing the habitual nonvoter to vote, author French weaves an emotional tale of an underdogโ€™s efforts to win the election and save her schoolโ€™s integrity. For those losing hope in America, this book is a must read.โ€

โ€œThe Beginnerโ€™s Guide to Winning an Election is a heartfelt and moving story with vivid characters and a realistic, near-future setting. I highly recommend this novel of courage, honesty, duplicity, and the corrupting influence of private interests in public educationโ€”a wonderful book that deserves a wide audience.โ€

โ€œWe have a saying at our high schoolโ€™s model legislature: โ€˜Democracy is not a spectator sport.โ€™ Michael R. Frenchโ€™s poignant new novel demonstrates that adage through Brit Kitridge, a high school senior who finds her political voice and clarifies her future by challenging her schoolโ€™s beloved principal. I hope this book inspires more students to get involved in politics and public service by doing the sameโ€”speaking up.โ€

You Started WHAT After 60? Highpointing Across America by Jane T. Bertrand Blog Tour & Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

One womanโ€™s journey to traverse the highest peaks in all 50 US States leads to a nearly decadeโ€™s worth of stories and memories in author Jane T. Bertrandโ€™s You Started WHAT After 60? Highpointing Across America. Here is the synopsis.

The Synopsis

ITCHING FOR A CHALLENGE when she turned 60, Jane Bertrand set out to reach the highest point of each state. Her strategic mistake was to start with the easiest ones, leaving the most strenuous for the end of this decade-long quest. She recruited over 50 family members, colleagues, and childhood friends to join her in making this the experience of a lifetime.

Jane Trowbridge Bertrand is a professor at the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. A Maine native, she moved to New Orleans over 40 years ago where she and her husband Bill raised their children, Katy and Jacob. Her recurrent travel to Africa in connection with international family planning work generated many of the frequent flyer miles that made this highpointing pursuit possible.

The Review

This was such a unique and inspiring book to read. This nonfiction, sports and senior travel novel showcased not only the sport of high pointing and the various goals, classifications and challenges that go along with it, but it showed the strength and resilience it takes to complete such a task. Despite many challenges and alternate hiking routes/mountains that needed to be taken, the goal was the pursuit of this challenge, and showcased how anyone labeled a senior citizen can still accomplish seemingly impossible tasks.

Although a fairy short read, the amount of detail and the writing itself was brilliant in this book. Breaking each chapter down by the mountains climbed and the difficulty of the climb itself, to bringing in memories of family and friends, as well as the travels themselves and the companions who joined her, made this not only an inspirational story and unique take on high pointing in general, but a personal story at that. This allows readers to connect with the author in a whole new way, and made this quite an enjoyable experience.

The Verdict

Overall I loved the tale. A true story of overcoming the odds and adversity as a strong and powerful woman tackles an often overlooked sport and challenges herself to this task, readers who enjoy hiking, high pointing and stories of fighting against all odds will absolutely love this tale. If you havenโ€™t yet, grab your copy of You Started WHAT After 60? Highpointing Across America by Jane T. Bertrand today!

About the Author:

Jane Trowbridge Bertrand is a professor at the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. A Maine native, she moved to New Orleans over 40 years ago where she and her husband Bill raised their children, Katy and Jacob. Her recurrent travel to Africa in connection with international family planning work generated many of the frequent flyer miles that made this highpointing pursuit possible.

(Longer “about” from her website if you prefer:)

Jane Bertrand traces her love of hiking back to Girl Scout Camp Natarswi, located at the foot of Katahdin in Maine, the Northern terminus for the Appalachian trail.

After attending college out of state, she would return annually for her two-week sacrosanct vacation in Maine.  Over the years she would continue to climb Katahdin, first with her sisters, later with her own children, and finally with adult friends who shared her love of the mountain.

Yet not until age 60 did it occur to her to expand her annual expedition up Katahdin to a quest to reach the highpoints of the 50 states. When she started this project of โ€œclimbing a mountain in every state,โ€ little did she realize that the Highpointers have a Club, Foundation, website, and annual convention.

During most of her adult life, Bertrand stayed in shape by jogging three times a week, but she was no elite athlete. When at age 60 she began her highpointing pursuit, she got off to a lackluster start, achieving only 11 high points in the first six years, and almost all of those were โ€œeasy.โ€ As she advanced to her mid-sixties, the race against time begin. Despite minor setbacks with runnerโ€™s knee and bunions, she pushed ahead โ€“ her interest in highpointing evolving into an obsession and finally an addiction. As she faced mountains of increasing difficulty โ€“ that she had unwisely left to the end โ€“ she accelerated her exercise routine in hopes of meeting the challenge.

Initially, she assumed that her full-time job at Tulane University, both teaching classes and traveling to Africa in connection with her international family planning work, would be a deterrent to reaching the highest point of every state. Midway through this journey, she realized it was actually a facilitator, as she traveled through different Delta hubs en route to her work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Over the course of this decade-long pursuit, Bertrand recruited over 50 family members, colleagues, and childhood friends to accompany her on this journey. They ranged in age from 4 months to 71 years. Some she hadnโ€™t seen for over 40 years, others she met on the day they highpointed together.

Bertrand initially ruled out any mountain that would involve technical climbing requiring a harness, rope, ice axe, or helmet. But as the remaining mountains on her list increased in difficulty, she had no choice but to bite the bullet and harness up.  Her story describes the exhilaration and sense of accomplishment of pushing harder and reaching further than she expected possible. Yet it also recounts the humbling experience of getting lost more than once and dragging down the final miles, even after successfully summiting one of the hardest mountains โ€“ with every muscle in her body screaming โ€œthis is why 69-year olds should not be climbing Mt. Hood.”

Jane Bertrand received her B.A. (French) from Brown University in 1971, her PhD (Sociology) from the University of Chicago in 1976, and her MBA from Tulane University in 2001, Bertrand has lived in New Orleans, Louisiana with her husband Bill Bertrand (also a Tulane professor, affectionately known as the โ€œCajun Chefโ€), where they raised their two children, Katy and Jacob. She has come to love her adopted city: the jazz, the food, the beauty of Spanish moss and tropical plants. She is also a member of the all-female Krewe of Muses, a group that parades every year during Mardi Gras.
