Everyone who was invited to the house knows Walter—well, they know him a little, anyway. Some met him in childhood; some met him months ago. And Walter’s always been a little…off.

But after the hardest year of their lives, nobody was going to turn down Walter’s invitation to an astonishingly beautiful house in the woods, overlooking an enormous sylvan lake. It’s beautiful, it’s opulent, it’s private—so a week of putting up with Walter’s weird little schemes and nicknames in exchange for the vacation of a lifetime? Why not?

All of them were at that moment in their lives when they could feel themselves pulling away from their other friends; wouldn’t a chance to reconnect be…nice? In The Nice House on the Lake, the overriding anxieties of the 21st century get a terrifying new face—and it might just be the face of the person you once trusted most.

Collects The Nice House on the Lake #1-6.

The Review

This was such a beautifully balanced and thought-provoking read. The author and artist found the perfect harmony with one another, capturing the tone and settings of both the main event and the narrative futures that each character’s arc opens the chapter with. The striking contrasts between the grim horror of the events happening outside of the Lake House and the mind-bending science fiction happening within the home and its surroundings will captivate and send chills down readers’ spines.

The mystery and character growth really shine through here. The mystery surrounding Walter and his origins are what draws the cast of characters into the narrative, to begin with, eager to learn why their caring and powerful friend has drawn them together on the eve of such a cataclysmic event. The examination of who these people were on the outside of the Lake House and the growing fears they each face play into the greater theme of isolation and the anxiety many are facing in this new era in our own world.

The Verdict

A breathtaking, artistically striking, and truly entertaining read, author James Tynion IV’s “The Nice House on the Lake, Vol. 1” is a must-read narrative, and leaves us wanting more. The brilliant artwork and captivating story will keep readers on the edge of their seat, and make for a heart-pounding and thoughtful story. If you haven’t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!

The Synopsis

Sion Zona thought he at least had a sense of security in Nordica…

…Until realization strikes that he is nothing more than a pawn in yet another game

He could’ve seen Tamuria playing this game. But Nordica? Sion spent the last year believing that Nordica was the Land of Elementals. A place where elementals could freely practice their ability on their own terms, unlike the perpetual restrictions Tamuria set.

Now that the truth’s out in the open, it’s clear the Nordicans were only using their elementals for their own, selfish gain.

Then again, not everything out there meets the eye. Was using elementals and Elemental Masters really Nordica’s ulterior motive? Or is someone or something more sinister pulling Nordica’s strings?

And if that’s the case, every single elemental in the World of Eidolon is in danger. War has ravaged the region. Death is everywhere. And now, Sion must deal with not just an external enemy, but numerous internal enemies.

Wind Keeper is Book III in the Elementals of Nordica Series and the conclusion to the Eidolon Trilogy. If you love global conspiracies, alternate worlds, swords, and sorcery, plus a blend of old-world epic fantasy fused into science fiction, look no further!

The Review

What a shocking and exhilarating final chapter in this particular series. The action and suspense that went into this narrative were so profoundly felt. The author once again did such a fantastic job of balancing the fantasy elements of the magic and powers the Nine had and how it impacted their character traits with the science-fiction of the futuristic and otherworldly settings along with the political and militaristic aspects of the narrative.

The rich character development and the impact the narrative has on this cast of characters is so expertly told. Getting to see how far these characters have evolved over time and how powerful they’ve grown both individually and as a group was amazing. The themes were so powerful here, getting to see how politics can muddy the waters of any powerful nation, as well as the dangers of being used as weapons and having your freedoms stripped from you in the face of a powerful force.

The Verdict

Mesmerizing, action-packed, and thought-provoking, author TC Marti’s “Wind Keeper” is a must-read genre mashup of fantasy and science fiction! The perfect way to end this particular series, the author does an amazing job of leaving a big enough cliffhanger that readers should expect a brand-new trilogy to follow up this one and continue this amazing story. The Order by John-Patrick Bayle Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

The discovery of a mysterious manuscript puts a novice monk into the perilous journey none would have seen coming in author John-Patrick Bayle’s “The Order”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

1513, France -An ancient origin. A secret society. A long anticipated birth has come to pass. The news spreads in a hushed wave throughout the world. It has begun.Armies move while nations sleep, and one of human history’s greatest movements teeters on the edge of collapse. The Order is a gripping tale of deception, secrecy, cruelty, and a man whose faith stands firm in the face of it all.

The Review

The pacing and tone of the narrative were so well balanced. The way author was able to capture the atmosphere and behavior of the monks early into the story while infusing mystery and intrigue to keep the stakes of the mission alive. The tension that the author infused into the narrative was felt heavily in the story, as the brotherhood that the author established early on took some twists that made the protagonist force himself to view the world a bit more warily, while also struggling with his views and trusting nature.

The two biggest things that stood out to me in this narrative were the wealth of character development and the brilliant infusion of history into the story. The way in which the protagonist relates to these characters and must traverse this shadowy world and organization within such a turbulent point in the 16th century was so captivating to read. The emotions that this character underwent on this transformative journey only added more depth to the action and battles that the narrative took later on in the story.

The Verdict

Memorable, entertaining, and hauntingly intriguing historical fiction, author John-Patrick Bayle’s “The Order” is a must-read novel! The fantastic blend of mystery and history is always such a plus for me as a reader and the engaging way the author delved into the man underneath the monk’s hood and the hood’s representation as a whole during this chaotic time period while also uncovering the mysteries of the narrative made for a story that could not be put down. The Last Keeper is the first book in The Warminster Series. With gripping, epic action and heart-pounding adventure, you’ll love this new adventure series.

The Review

This was a fantastic fantasy read. The author did a great job of really delving into the high fantasy element of the narrative, with a beautifully fleshed-out world that feels alive and magical on every page. The writing does a brilliant job of making readers feel connected to the main narrative, and the style of writing was done in such a way that readers felt as if they were walking in the protagonist’s shoes the entire time. What stood out was how the writing made the world-building seamless and as if the world had existed long before this book was written, allowing the reader to feel invested in the narrative early on.

The action and mythos were highly elevated thanks to some personal and intimate character development. The way the author allowed each character’s personal journey to get the same amount of care and attention as the moments they came together to face this growing evil was phenomenal. The look at the politics and diplomacy between various kingdoms within this land was a great way to develop this world too, keeping the narrative grounded where it needed to be and making the more magical-driven elements feel more profound.

The Verdict

A stunning, gripping, and entertaining high fantasy read, author J.V. Hilliard’s “The Last Keeper” is a must-read novel. The rich storytelling and mythology the author developed, along with emotional character growth and complex relationships between the core cast of characters, made this story shine brightly and made for a fantastic opening book in a growing high fantasy series. Home Boys by Seth C. Kadish Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Seth C. Kadish takes readers back to his beginning years as a therapist in the year 2000 by helping a caseload of troubled youths in his book, “Home Boys”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

In the year 2000, new therapist Seth C. Kadish is assigned a caseload of Probation boys at a Southern California group home. It’s trial and error, with moments of insight and learning, as Seth attempts to connect with the challenging teens – violent, manipulative Timothy who loves his mother and sister … Ramon, a bouncing butterball of energy and mayhem … odd Ryan who states a desire to be the first man buried on the moon … rapper Joey, jokester Enrique, sweet-natured Manuel … wanna-be gangster Antonio whose father is in the Mexican Mafia … and Rodney, angry and mistrustful, whose sole aim in life is to get back to his drug-addicted mother.

“Home Boys” is the poignant and humorous story of the relationship between a novice therapist and a group of troubled boys whose stories will touch your heart.

The Review

This was such an insightful read. The author does such an incredible job of not only relating the experiences he had as a therapist for this group home for troubled youths, but how these experiences taught him the lessons he would use later on in his career as a therapist. The honesty and heart in which the author wrote spoke to the balance the author struck tonally between clinical and emotional.

The way the author broke up each chapter to examine the cases relating to each individual patient within this group home was so fascinating to read. Not only was it interesting to see the author diagnose and examine what each boy was experiencing and going through, but how the sessions and interactions with these boys would teach the author as a newcomer to the world of therapy when dealing with patients later years.

The Verdict

Heartening, thoughtful, and insightful to read and explore, author and Dr. Seth Kadish’s “Home Boys” is a must-read nonfiction book. The gripping narrative and insight into the impact the relationship between a doctor and their patient can get were so brilliantly written. Passionately written and giving readers an engaging experience to see the hardships and struggles these young men had that brought them to the author’s door, to begin with, this is one psychological, therapy-driven nonfiction read that you won’t want to put down. Airy Nothing by Clarissa Pattern Review

Two boys must traverse a magical London in search of friendship and acceptance in author Clarissa Pattern’s “Airy Nothing”.

The Synopsis

When you’ve always been told you’re wrong, finding a place that accepts you can be the most magical thing in the world.

John has always seen things others could not see. He runs away to fabled London to find his fortune, but all he finds are grimy streets, rife with hangings and disease. BlackJack is a fast-talking pickpocket ready to show John a new life in the big city. When John first sees Shakespeare’s wondrous Globe theatre, he becomes convinced that this is where he truly belongs. But can BlackJack resist the urge to make some easy coin off of his new, naïve friend? And can John step up to the stage before the beast of the city swallows them both? AIRY NOTHING is a magical period tale of two boys finding friendship, love, and acceptance in seething Elizabethan London.

The Review

This was a remarkable read. The author did a great job of striking the perfect balance between the realism of the character growth and settings with the fantasy element of the magical realism the genre calls for. The way the author explores the world that exists just a shift away from our own world and how the protagonist deals with this world as he makes his way through the streets of London was so unique to see, and the magical nature of the narrative added to the heightened tone and emotions the author was delving into.

Character growth was very prominent in this narrative, and actually made the story what it was. The exploration of sexuality and identity in this narrative was so profound through John’s story, exploring the world’s perspective of a person and standing this against the feelings, emotions, and internal knowledge that a person has about their own selves. The complex relationship not only between John and the magical world of the fae around him but between him and Jack was so moving and kept the reader invested in this story.

The Verdict

Captivating, entertaining, and hauntingly beautiful, author Clarissa Pattern’s “Airy Nothing” is a must-read magical realism novel. The breathtaking scenery and atmosphere the author created mirrored the fantasy and emotional character growth that brought real people to live in a world that feels so much like our own world and really created a gripping story that readers wouldn’t be able to put down. Interview with David Edwards

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

Honestly, it is a means to an end. While working with a multi-disciplinary team to create the most effective health center in the world I had an epiphany, a “wow” moment. I realized that our care model was built around the ability of the patient to be the captain of the team, to lead their own path to health and wellness. So really, even with the most amazing facility, technology, and staff success is dependent upon the patient.

I asked, “What are we doing to help the patient be successful?” I studied change models and my “wow” came when I realized that all of them depend on personal motivation. This is not some bolted on motivational speech or habit but a deeply personal and individual experience. I spent the next two years studying, thinking, and writing. I realized that a book would be a great way to share what I had learned, and hopefully help the most people uncover their own motivation to their lasting benefit.

Advertisements

What inspired you to write your book?

I suppose the previous paragraph mostly answers this question as well. As a Christian I hope that everything I do is motivated by my love. During the writing process there was a lot of academic research, but an equal amount of inspiration as I strove to both understand the material and make it understandable for my intended audience.

What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

If I may, there are three. First, your life is important. No matter your position or status, what you think, say, and do matters. Second, your personal motivation is a source of power for you. It can be discovered and developed throughout your life no matter what has happened to you, or what you have or have not done in the past. Third, where you think you fall on the line or ranking of famous, successful, rich or whatever else it does not matter. The only thing that matters is that you are making some progress. This is a life-long journey, whether you are starting it at 18 or 88.

What drew you into this particular genre?

Self-help seemed obvious. I have read a lot of this genre whether with a personal, spiritual, or business lens. The writing that appeals to me the most is applicable to all domains of life.

What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

As I am just starting out that is yet to be determined. Since my target audience are people earning less than the median income, I am focusing on Facebook to start as my research showed that is the most common platform for this audience.

What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Again, I am just starting out, so take this with an appropriate level of skepticism. Know that if you want to earn money by writing you must mind both the writing side and the business side. Both are essential, and spending time on both is time well spent. If you really hate the business side, then become the best writer possible and get an agent and seek to partner with a publishing house that can bear a lot of that load for you. Finally, be patient and consistent. The first time, independently published, NYT best seller is a rare breed indeed. So be patient, persistent, and continuously improve. Good things will happen. If you find you are beating yourself up regularly, I encourage you to read my book and apply the principles, it could help with that.

What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

Ah, the future. I don’t know, as none of us does. I am trying to influence my future in a few ways. I make daily work of promoting my book as it cannot help people if they don’t know about it. I am working on making a community college course out of the material, and lastly starting to plant the seeds of a version for Christians. I felt a lot of inspiration in the writing, as noted earlier, and there is great consistency between the 10 general enduring principles and principles of Christianity. Making those connections explicit could help people who would not otherwise be exposed to or pursue the book.

Will she become the great protector or is she more like her Grandfather than she wants to admit?

The Review

This was such a fast-paced and entertaining read! The author did a truly fantastic job of world-building and crafting a very rich and descriptive narrative that really brought a large sense of imagery that captured the essence of these various worlds and realms the narrative took the protagonist in. The balance of character growth and mythos was perfectly captured, bringing both heart and creativity to the worlds in which Jess found herself.

The character exploration in this story was unparalleled. The examination of protagonist Jess was especially brilliant, as her gifts and her mission for revenge were really tested when faced with the strain it put on her relationships, both with her mom and sister and with her longtime friend and boyfriend Peter. The twists and turns that came as a result of her desire to protect them as well as her need to avenge her father’s death were amazing. The tension and grim reality of her family life came to life in her battle with her grandfather, as she had to not only discover what life was like in his kingdom and under his rule but had to discover the lengths to which his villainy and desire for power extended.

The Verdict

Captivating, engaging, and adrenaline-fueled fantasy action and adventure, author VK Tritschler’s “Revenge Seeker” is a must-read novel and the perfect next chapter in the Vital Impetus series! The twists and turns in Jess’s journey and the exploration of the corruption that power can bring and the blurred line that can come when seeking both justice and vengeance made this story really come to life, and the cliffhanger ending that left the fate of several characters up in the air made this a book that couldn’t be missed. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author and Dr. Teresa Cody share the miracle and rich possibilities that Platelet Rich Plasma can have on healing a person’s body in her book, “You Healing You”.

The Synopsis

Come learn how each and every one of us has a miracle at our fingertips……Coursing through your bloodstream is a miraculous golden healing liquid called Platelet Rich Plasma [PRP, for short]. PRP contains all the healing factors your body uses to heal. Using this knowledge, we can concentrate this priceless blood component and reintroduce it into your body to heal injuries or as an esthetic treatment. Learn how your own body holds the key to healing. It truly is “you healing you”.

The Review

While the book itself is fairly short, the honest and passionate way in which the author writes really draws the reader into the book. The research and way the author built up her exploration of PRP from the ground up was inspiring and did a great job of showcasing a different path towards the reader’s own health. The descriptive nature of the process and exploration of different procedures utilizing PRP such as the Vampire Facial was intriguing to read about.

What struck me personally was the exploration of an early chapter in the book, in particular chapter 2 that was titled Synchronicity. While the author approaches some religious-based themes for her discovery and exploration of PRP, the author’s use of synchronicity and the design of the larger universe was truly fascinating to me. As someone who has been introduced to the concept of synchronicity within the last few years and has studied the many instances that synchronicity has been brought into my life, I found the author’s memories, experiences, and even the way the author utilized the study of individual healing to be refreshing to read about.

The Verdict

Engaging, honest, and thought-provoking, author Dr. Teresa Cody’s “You Healing You” was a must-read nonfiction book on health and the use of PRP. The rich amount of information and practical research the author put into this book and the exploration of natural treatments such as this was both interesting and thoughtful to read about.
