Colorful and creatively illustrated and written for kids ages 4-9, it teaches them fun facts about hippos and elephants and that it’s cool to be different-you just need to find your herd.

The Review

What an emotional and heartwarming read! The warmth of the illustrations and the rich dynamics between Kuno and the elephant, especially its leader, will stay with both parents and their children as the story progresses. The balance the author found between the heartening story and the attention to detail the author pays to the animal facts about elephants and hippos and the lives they lead was incredible to see come to life on the page.

The heart of this story was in the themes the author brought to life, from the value of friendship and the true meaning of a family to the question of identity and the battle to be your most true and authentic self. Kuno’s struggle and the family he finds for himself will resonate with so many young people who are looking for a sense of self and with parents who want to show their children the power of self-acceptance and friendship and how they can endure.

The Verdict

Memorable, heartfelt, and compelling author Milt Lowe’s “The Hippo Who Hated to Fight” is a must-read children’s book. The engaging and thoughtful themes will allow the dynamic characters and story to elevate and bring parents and children alike together perfectly. About the Author

A former copywriter at top New York City advertising agencies, Milt Lowe has won over 60 major awards. Including both Gold and Silver Lions at the TV Cannes Film Festival.

In a Writer’s Digest competition, Milt won an award in their Personal Essay category. He’s also written humor pieces for The New York Daily News and Advertising Age.

Famed cartoon artist Charles Schulz read a hockey article Milt had written and wrote him a letter—complete with a Snoopy doodle—that Milt framed and hung over his desk.

When Judge Judy Sheindlin – whose show draws an average audience of about 10 million viewers a day – wrote her first children’s book, she called Milt and asked him to write the title: WIN OR LOSE BY HOW YOU CHOOSE! Her point was to teach children that the choices they make as kids will determine the adults they become.

Milt has written four children’s books, available internationally: The Hippo Who Hated To Fight, My ANT Mary, Fartasaurus, and Milo and the Big Yawn.

The Review

What a rich and compelling mystery read. The author did an incredible job of layering this story with a suspenseful atmosphere and the chilling tension that mounted as the story progressed. The inclusion of science fiction into the story was a welecome twist, and exploring a medical sci-fi mystery that touched upon life after death and so much more helped elevate the overall mystery of the novel.

The heart of this narrative was in the character development. Ward was a great protagonist, with the balance of his perosnal life with his new case showcasing the heart and drive of the story’s hero. The mystery behind Bella, especially her standing in the case as  either a victim or a criminal (or both?), and the shocking villain of this story helped to make the overall plot more grounded and eerie as the story progressed.

The Review

This was one of the more mature, raunchy, action-packed fantasy reads. The balance of humor and grit that the author was able to infuse into the story and the descriptive nature of the writing style allowed the reader to feel engaged with this cast of characters right from the start. The way the author can weave together the magical side of this story with the real-world human elements makes this feel like a plausible and honest depiction of the world the author has crafted.

The heart of this story rests in the world-building, mythos, and character development. Immediately, what stood out was the protagonist, for Vox is a truly flawed hero. The magical nature of his work and the role he takes in this story meld with the realism of his character. The issues he faces as a person and in his personal relationships speak to the authenticity of this individual and make his heroics more profound when his character grows.

The Synopsis

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Professor Peter Morley is a retired FBI Intelligence Officer and Christian who becomes a neutrino physicist at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He started using new technology which identified a new form of energy based on traumatic past events he calls “Traumergy” which display events in the form of holograms.

While, working on a prototype of Traumergy Professor Morley identifies a conspiracy. The leaders of the company plan to go public based on stolen technology from MIT. Professor Morley works to find the truth using Traumergy and identifies a timeline which first started in 33AD.

The Review

The author was able to craft a mystery and a thought-provoking narrative in a short amount of time. The quick escalation of the scientific discovery that came with Traumergy and the exploration of what both the government and private corporations will do when faced with new technology was significantly represented by the conspiracy the protagonist came against in this novel. The world-building and the character arcs in this short novella made the story feel tangible and inviting, with an incredible story that readers could get lost in.

The heart of this story rests in the idea and concepts surrounding the bridge between science and spirituality. While many religious readers will be able to identify with the protagonist and his shared balance between both worlds, even non-religious individuals can engage with this story. The idea that trauma and traumatic events throughout both personal and world history can make an actual physical impact on an environment has always stood out to me as both a reader and a paranormal investigator, and exploring the different applications that energy can impact our world was a great source of storytelling in this book.

The Verdict

Author Patrick R. Carberry’s “Traumergy” is a must-read religious meets mystery sci-fi thriller that beautifully fuses theoretical physics, spirituality, and a mystery thriller element. The narrative twists and turns and the emotional and spiritual aspect of the story’s main plot will keep readers invested in this thought-provoking tale. The Review

This was a rich and diverse artwork collection for adults and children to color. What stuck out immediately was the detail in both the artwork and the introduction, which showed readers various aspects of coloring books that people don’t always stop to consider. From the different colors and the color wheel that people can use when determining to shade and what to put in the image to the various types of drawing/coloring materials you can use and how each one, from colored pencils to gel pens and markers, will appear on the page if selected.

The publishers also gave readers a chance to learn how to preserve the images once they were colored in, exploring aspects of shading, how to prevent smudging, and even framing some of your favorite photos. The mental health aspect of the coloring book also stands out, as both children and adults can find the exercise soothing and comforting, helping to maintain a semblance of balance and peace that can curb any negativity or mental health struggles in one’s life.

The Review

What a compelling and haunting collection. What made these stories stand out was how each story could stand on its own feet and yet continuously held this connective mythos surrounding Big Al and the mystery behind the seemingly powerful “man” and “store” themselves. The author once again demonstrated a command over imagery in his writing style, with each story feeling like an episode of Twin Peaks or The Twilight Zone on the page. 

One of my favorite stories in the book was The Grinning Man, as it took the iconic story and legend of Indrid Cold, a prolific figure in the Mothman case, and intensified the legend surrounding the man/alien (Depending on what you believe). The tension and heavy atmosphere the author brought out in each story, and the way these characters embodied the best and worst aspects of humanity, created an almost “devil deal” scenario that made people question who the true monster was, giving this a thriller element that will stay with readers long after the book ends.

A masterful work of short horror fiction that weaves three twisted tales of terror, author Alan McGill delivers a fantastic collection to keep readers on the edge of their seats. Alan McGill is an American author who lives in an old farmhouse with a clowder of cats. Alan was close to his grandparents, who grew up during the Great Depression. They were married young and remained together until his grandmother’s passing. His grandfather served in the Navy during WWII and was a gifted storyteller who wove humorous tales about tough events. Alan grew up listening to these stories of right and wrong and watching fictional heroes–such as the Lone Ranger, Adam West’s Batman and Captain America–stand up to bullies and protect those who count not protect themselves. This was such a personal and heartfelt collection of poetry. The imagery and raw nature of the collection allowed the reader to view the journey that the author took to heal and find himself amidst the issues he was facing. The relatability and honesty that the author and poet conveyed in these poems will strike a harmonious chord with readers who are facing similar situations as the author.

What stood out was how the author’s writing style came across as a balance of stream-of-consciousness with artistic flair. The author was able to bring powerful themes of mental health struggles, body image struggles, and depression to these poems without being too on the nose with them. This allowed the reader to feel the raw emotions of the poems and the notes of hope that are peppered throughout the book, bringing a sense of inspiration.

The Verdict

Thoughtful, engaging, and memorable poetry, author Dune Stewart’s “A Journey of Perspective (Growth)” is a must-read poetry collection. The hopeful tone and the relatability of the author’s struggles and achievements when dealing with mental health made this a personal and promising read. Chrissy’s parties never stop in the profitable confines of his locally renowned trap house. Fuelled by North Wales’ lack of prosperity, his aimless cretin entourage are dragged along for a parasitic, rampant ride, rinsing the deprived town’s insatiable addicts of their spare change.

When Sam, a naïve, straight-edged student moves in and jeopardizes this anarchic way of life, Chrissy stops at nothing to get him onside. Never did he envisage the tragic consequences…

Such short-term brazen gain has long tarnished Chrissy’s local reputation; tight-knit communities sometimes forgive, but rarely forget. Aching to escape this pit-hole existence is great, but being allowed to execute change is a privilege only some get.

The Review

This is a truly gritty, haunting, and engaging read. The author expertly weaves together a story of chaos and drama, delving into a dark and realistic depiction of what addiction and life in a university can be like. The imagery in the author’s writing style brings this lifestyle to the forefront, delving into the shocking realizations and raw language that readers often find themselves confronting in these characters. 

The author achieved both dark humor and harrowing life experiences within one narrative. The overwhelming feeling of intensity and the raw look into drug culture, not only in general but in particular in a university setting, allowed the reader to see through the eyes of these realistic characters. The added depth of a revenge story and the consequences others must pay for one’s mistakes made the reader feel the shock and awe this particular story brought.

The Verdict

Author George Veck’s “Spurious Scrapper” is a must-read vigilante justice meets crime thriller and drama novel that is shocking, honest, and gripping. The thought-provoking look into the mindset of characters like Chrissy and the evolution, or at times devolution, of these individuals allows the reader to get a firmer idea of what tragedy is waiting for those who are sadly immersed in the underbelly of the drug world. The author found various ways to touch upon the fragility of life and kept the reader engaged in each story and the characters that drove them. The visceral imagery and the poetic writing style helped capture the settings of each story and the connections between the characters, allowing the reader to bond with these characters as they experienced life’s various challenges.

The heart of this story is in the powerful themes that the stories touch upon. The bond we share, the power that love holds in our hearts, and the emotional threads that connect us all. The standout stories for me were The Last Waltz in Zurich, The Proposal, and my favorite, A Quiet Evening with the Parents. Each touches upon the pain and love that comes with those bonds that connect us, from the loss of a parent to the romance between two people connected by tragedy and so much more.

Memorable, authentic, and heartfelt author Amir Tomer’s “The Last Waltz in Zurich and Other Stories” is a must-read short story collection. About the Author

Dr. Amir Tomer is a professor for Software Engineering. He holds three degrees in computer science and has worked in various industrial and managerial positions at Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. He transitioned to academia to meet the challenge of establishing a new Software Engineering department at Kinneret College on the Sea of Galilee. He headed the department for over ten years, successfully earning its official recognition from the Israeli Council for Higher Education.

The Last Waltz in Zurich is Amir Tomer’s second book. His first, a poetry collection titled Love Designer, was published in Hebrew by Assif Publishing House in 2021.
