The Synopsis

Newport Summer 1899—yachts, balls, and famed artists eager to paint portraits of Society’s “Queens.”

Western silver heiress Val Mackle DeVere (Mrs. Roderick W.) agrees to “sit” for a portrait for her beloved Roddy, only to stumble on a scene of bloody, grisly homicide at an art gallery.

Like a figure from Pompeii, the dead Newport gallery manager screams in silence, his hands like claws clutching at a gilt frame pulled down over his head and shoulders while blood darkens his cream-colored suit.

Impulsive, Val reaches for the murder weapon and will find herself suspected, shamed, and shunned as she seeks the killer while learning yet again a lesson taught by Cornelius Vanderbilt IV: “No city on earth is as hostile to outsiders as Newport.”

The Review

This was a fun and engaging historical fiction meets mystery drama. The author found the perfect balance in the story between examining “high society” within communities such as Newport and honing in on the narrative’s mystery and thriller aspects. The creative way the author infused drink recipes into the narrative for readers to enjoy through one of the main characters was also inspired, as it allowed the reader to really become invested in the story.

The heart of the narrative rests in the solid historical accuracy of how society and the world viewed women and their role in that era, with the solid and engaging character growth of the protagonist and those around her. The setting and imagery in the author’s writing highlighted this time period well, and the way the protagonist has to battle her way through both suspicion and social shame to regain her status and catch a killer in the process will have readers enthralled with this novel.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was a thoughtful and engaging read. So many relationship books take time to focus on the ideal pairings that society has given us, such as a husband and wife or boyfriend and girlfriend. But romance is so much more complex than that, and the relationships we find ourselves in are not always fairytale endings. When relationships involving “the other woman” are examined, the other woman is often viewed from a more sinister point of view, as if they were always the core instigators of this tangled web of lies and deceit. Rarely, if ever, is it shown how these women are also part of that web of lies and lied to and used themselves by these men, until this book that is.

The author’s use of humor and wit in the book’s writing style helps alleviate some of the heavier subject matter within the book. The way the author examines everything from how women get into these types of relationships to what drives the men’s behavior in this relationship and so much more allows the reader to feel both connected to the author’s work and the emotional and mental toll that being caught up in this type of relationship can do to a person.

The Verdict

Memorable, authentic, and engaging author Martess A. Dowling’s “Is He Ever Going to Leave His Wife?” is a must-read nonfiction book on relationships and what life is like for “the other woman.” The insight and heart that goes into the author’s work and the layered analysis of these relationships will resonate with many women. Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was a compelling and gripping thriller. The author did an incredible job of layering the mystery and atmosphere into this book’s writing, elevating the characters and keeping the reader invested in the overall narrative. The writing style, allowing multiple POVs for the characters in this book, felt very reminiscent of a Dean Koontz novel, giving each character’s voice a part of the overall story.

The heart of this narrative rested in the author’s ability to use imagery and tension to build up the growing suspense that this narrative held. The attention to detail the narrative gave to today’s political and social conflicts really helped bring the reader into the narrative more fully, and the growing horrors that these characters faced felt more shocking as they reflected our own world much more thoroughly.

Harrowing, compelling, and entertaining author Caroline Taylor’s “The Pit Road War” is a must-read mystery thriller that you won’t be able to put down. The Review

This was a thought-provoking and engaging read. The author does an incredible job of presenting research and understanding surrounding these subjects. As someone who has struggled with anxiety off and on throughout my life, having the author share the connections made in our minds to fear and how we can reshape our understanding and acceptance of those fears to work through our anxiety in a much more effective way.

The way the author bridged the gap between biology and psychology was also excellent to see. Seeing the physical impacts that can cause our brains to process these fears and emotions made the book feel more strategic and thoughtful in its approach. The author also presents these ideas and practices to the reader very efficiently, allowing the reader to absorb this information for themselves and leaving room for more research down the road.

The Review

This was such a moving and engaging book of poetry. The contrast of emotions in this book, the wavering between despair and hope, and the journey one takes to get to that point made this a compelling read. The best example I can find of this contrast of emotions came in the line, “I hate myself for being broken enough to hurt myself and others still and still remain unchanged.”

The fast pace of the collection and the rich tapestry of emotions kept the reader invested in the author’s work. From the heartbreaking moments of painful experiences to the light and hopeful notes that the poetry takes, each poem is filled with equal amounts of imagery and heart that feel both relatable and inspiring simultaneously.

The Verdict

Memorable, heartfelt, and engaging author James W.A.’s “Desolation and Epiphany” is a must-read collection of poems that is not to be missed. The captivating imagery that the author’s works bring to mind and the breathtaking moments of emotional discovery made this book essential reading for any poetry fan out there. The Brink: A Memoir by Jaime Andrews Review

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

Author Jamie Andrews takes a witty yet emotional journey into her adolescence in the book “The Brink: A Memoir”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Andrews unblinkingly delivers this tale of her troubled adolescence, detailing her descent into depression, promiscuity, drugs and institutionalization – all before the age of 18. Told from the point of view of a teenage sociopath, The Brink is funny, harrowing, lurid and absolutely true.

A deep, dark look at growing up in 90s suburbia, The Brink is eminently relatable to the ostracized youth of today, those who have been there, and those who enjoy gawking at car wrecks.

Jaime Andrews has been a comedic commentator (TruTV’s World’s Dumbest), an album cover-girl (My Chemical Romance), a columnist (Backstage, New Thinking), a commercial queen, a theater manager and, most recently, an award-winning filmmaker (Division). Way before that, though, she was the big mess you’ll find in these pages.

Metallica The Master Collection Banners

The Review

What immediately struck me when reading this incredible book was the depth of honesty and the casual tone in which the author wrote. The steady progression from teenage outbursts to more steady streams of depression and the harrowing experiences in institutions allowed the reader to connect with the author and their life.

The way the author organized this memoir was terrific. The book takes readers through her life as she experienced it, allowing the reader to feel the buildup, tension, and shocking events as they unfolded. The emotional weight of these experiences perfectly underscored the witty and direct writing style and speaks to the harsh realities that many young people face every day.

The Verdict

Poignant, concise, yet emotionally compelling and incredibly witty, author Jamie Andrew’s “The Brink” is a must-read memoir. The heart and charm that went into the writing of this story and the inspiring way her story reached out to others who have experienced similar events made this a remarkable story to get lost in. Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was a brilliant coming-of-age historical fiction novel. The author does a perfect job of capturing the chilling realities of the era, from the brutal and bloody nature of life as a miner to the hardships of working-class Americans and immigrants and the freestyle nature of crime in small, rural towns. The imagery the author utilizes in their writing really brings the grime and visceral setting to life effortlessly in this narrative.

To me, the author’s exceptional detail in both the history and the character development made this a remarkable story. The breathtaking yet shocking imagery helps elevate the culture and history of that era and the protagonist’s struggle both with his family and the people he becomes involved with when looking to help support his family after the tragic loss of the head of their household. The truth of his loss, as well as the themes the author explores in this era, from the racism and addiction that was growing during this time to the corruption of big corporations against middle-class America, made this a compelling story.

About the Author

Michael Dunn writes Working-Class Fiction from the Not So Gilded Age. “Anywhere But Schuylkill,” is the first in his Great Upheaval trilogy. A lifelong union activist, he has always been drawn to stories of the past, particularly those of regular working people, struggling to make a better life for themselves and their families. Stories most people do not know, or have forgotten, because history is written by the victors, the robber barons and plutocrats, not the workers and immigrants. Yet their stories are among the most compelling in America.

They resonate today because they are the stories of our own ancestors, because their passions and desires, struggles and tragedies, were so similar to our own. When Michael Dunn is not writing historical fiction, he teaches high school, and writes about labor history and culture. His labor history has been published in several online and print magazines:
