The Review

This was an exhilarating and shocking thriller. The author did a fantastic job of finding an original and thought-provoking mystery that would entice readers and keep them on the edge of their seats as the story unfolded. The even pacing of the story and the imagery that the author’s writing evoked really brought to life the setting both past and present into the account.

The rich character development and the dynamic history that the author was able to infuse into this story really made the mystery and atmosphere come to life perfectly. The tension that built amongst the characters, especially for the protagonist and her journey as the layers of this mystery unravel piece by piece, is made even more fraught as the ancient pieces of this secret society begin to come into place and the dangers become even more elevated.

The Verdict

Heart-pounding, captivating, and engaging, author Mihai Serban’s “The Fallen Branch” is a must-read thriller. The mystery, the culture, the history, and the dynamic characters made this story feel like an international Dean Koontz novel, starting the inciting incident as an ordinary mystery and slowly revealing a shocking yet powerful threat looming just below the surface. The Review

This was an engaging and emotional book. The author did an incredible job of balancing the storytelling aspect of his grandchildren and daughter’s experiences with the heartfelt connection he shares with them all. The fast-pace of the narrative blends with the themes of family and faith in a natural way, allowing the reader to feel engrossed in the author’s life experiences.

The imagery the author had in his writing kept the reader invested in the story, placing themselves in the author’s shoes perfectly to witness the highs and lows of this emotional story. The inspiration that Katie’s story brought into the reader’s life was so heartfelt, and the strength and wonderment that she brought into the author’s book allowed the reader to feel the emotional connection the author felt with their granddaughter.

Dear Prudence by Karen Janowsky Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Two lost souls find themselves drawn together by fate in author Karen Janowsky’s “Dear Prudence”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Two lost souls find a tether in the power of love.

Pru Blum’s life hasn’t been easy, but working as a cellist with the Lower Georgia Symphonic Orchestra is her solace. She depends on her friends and uncle for support, but she’s resolved to become stronger and more independent. However, avoiding her abusive ex, Cliff, isn’t easy… especially since he’s a member of the orchestra too. His overbearing personality and unwanted attention stop her in her tracks each time she tries to move forward.

Shawn Levinson’s life seems disjointed, almost as though it’s someone else’s. His parents adore and expect him to marry his girlfriend, Helena, and for him to work for her father’s corporation. Deep down, he knows their relationship is a sham. Besides, sitting at a desk and wearing a tie forever isn’t his dream. Whenever he tries to follow his own path, though, everyone dismisses his hopes as foolish. He doesn’t have the strength to oppose two families, so he escapes to Georgia to work on his parents’ retirement home and look for some clarity.

When these two lost souls literally collide, sparks fly, but neither wants the complication of a relationship. And Shawn hasn’t mentioned anything to Pru about Helena. No matter how hard they try to distance themselves, they can’t seem to keep away from each other. By the time they’re ready to admit their feelings, their pasts and secrets are poised to blow up in their faces. Falling in love may be exactly what they need… if they can each get out of their own way.

The Review

The story was such a moving and captivating contemporary romance novel. The imagery that the author is able to conjure in the reader’s mind with the powerful setting and atmosphere really elevated the narrative immediately, and the pacing was great in this book, as it allowed the chemistry between Pru and Shawn to grow at a natural pace. The tension that mounts over time as the chemistry brews more and more will enable readers to really feel the emotional and passionate connection these two lost souls develop for one another.

The heart of this story rested in the brilliant character development and the emotional narrative that builds up over time. The complex backstories of each protagonist and the problematic figures of their pasts that continue to haunt them made their story shine, and their connection to music and their Jewish heritage, as well as their shared pain and struggle, made the romance that bloomed more powerful and enthralling from the reader’s perspective.

The Verdict

Memorable, thoughtful, and entertaining, author Karen Janowsky’s “Dear Prudence” is a must-read contemporary romance novel. The slow-burn relationship that builds between these protagonists and the complex life backgrounds for them both, from the abusive ex who won’t leave her alone to the overbearing parents with a future carved out for their son, a fate he wants no part of, made this a compelling read. The Review

This was such a compelling and exhilarating read. The author did an incredible job of creating a rich and vastly developed fantasy world. The detail the author went into when developing these lands and the scenes in each chapter really made the action and character interactions that developed feel much more vivid and alive on the page.

To me, the heart of this narrative rested in the dynamic character development and incredible mythology the author developed. The way the author was able to infuse so many elements of sci-fi, high fantasy, and urban fantasy all at once made this book so gripping in its delivery. The various cultures and backgrounds that these characters come from and the way each protagonist plays into this ancient battle of wills will instantly draw the reader into the story.

The Verdict

Memorable, entertaining, and enthralling, author Liz Sauco’s “Lost Blades is a must-read high fantasy novel of 2023. About the Author

I’ve always loved stories. The more fantastical, the better. Unicorns were an early favorite of mine; I must have watched The Last Unicorn a thousand times as a child, driving my parents to near insanity. I devoured every book I could get my hands on – trips to Barnes and Noble were hotly anticipated.

Anime (thanks, Toonami!) and video games were other favorites. I watched Sailor Moon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Gundam Wing, played Zelda and Mario. Mythology also grabbed me, made me think of how other cultures viewed the world.

And eventually… I began telling my own stories. I’m grateful to have found readers like you who want to explore the world I’ve created, and walk a few miles with the characters I love. Thank you!

Allaigna’s Song: Aria (Allaigna’s Song) by JM Landels Review

A young woman takes on a dangerous journey after discovering the secrets of her origins in author JM Landels’s “Allaigna’s Song: Aria”, the second book in the Allaigna’s Song series.

The Synopsis

The long-awaited sequel to the bestselling fantasy ALLAIGNA’S SONG: OVERTURE!

Allaigna has discovered that her family has lied to about her parentage all her life. Fueled by anger and spurred by her betrothal to a neighbouring lord, Allaigna has packed her saddle bags and stolen away in the night. The perils of the road provide more than a distraction from her fury, and test her ability to sing music into magic to its limit. Unlikely allies, subterfuge, captivity, and assault conspire to change Allaigna’s status from mere runaway to fugitive.

While Allaigna charts her dangerous course, the quieter tales of her mother and grandmother unfold in tender, poignant, and heartbreaking vignettes that underscore the political and family tensions of the richly rendered world of the Ilmar.

The Review

I absolutely loved the world-building that this book held within it. The high fantasy world was so beautifully realized, and the multiple POVs between the three generations of women within this family allowed readers to see not only how they evolved as characters but how the world evolved around them. The politics and family structure that the author explored through these characters really made the setting feel alive and thoughtful in its approach.

To me, the heart of this book was in the blend of music with magic, as well as the strength of these incredible female characters, including the protagonist. The cohesiveness of the musical magic these characters exude, and the way Allaigna’s journey not only explores the depths of her power but the evolution of her outlook thanks to the way the world comes into conflict with her journey time and time again was both emotionally investing and gripping.

The Verdict

Harmonious, enthralling, and memorable, author JM Landels’s “Allaigna’s Song: Aria is a must-read high fantasy novel and a great addition to the Allaigna’s Song series. The detail the author puts into the book with maps and outlines of the world and the history within it was great to see, and the shocking twists and turns in these women’s lives will keep readers eager to read the next entry into the series. The Review

This was a compelling and informative read. The author did an amazing job of crafting a guide and educational book that speaks both to the individual and the couple within a relationship. The fast-paced book and the healing atmosphere the author highlights throughout the book were truly engaging for a reader to behold, and the use of biblical references throughout the book will resonate with religious readers as well.

The things that really stood out to me as a reader were the emphasis on attachment theory and the way this book examined the way to strengthen relationships while also healing the wounds of our past. The way the author was able to break down each type of attachment style and the way the author touches upon things that can go wrong in a relationship, from codependency and jealousy to improving upon our self-esteem and practicing self-compassion made this a truly remarkable read.

The Review

The world-building in this book was incredible. The way the author was able to explore the connection people have to the stars and the cosmos as a whole was greatly felt through the themes of this book, and the amazing use of imagery in the author’s writing style was both poetic in its delivery and creative as it allowed readers to really get a sense of this world and those who live within it and above it.

The character development was truly spectacular in this book. The way the character of Asha had a truly realized and full character arc was great to see, as her perspective on the people of Adama and the truth behind her own Star people’s role in the universe was so emotional and refreshing to see come to life on the page, and the relationships she developed along the way helped readers really connect to this protagonist.

The allure of prosperity collides with the ferocious realities of initiation. Their struggle to accept new customs and modes of thinking unfolds under the cruel gaze of Kurt “Stone” Adams, the secretary of internal security, who defends the nation he loves with revolutionary intensity.

Would you sell your soul for Utopia?

ABN Banner

The Review

This was a gripping and haunting sci-fi dystopian read. The world-building was excellent, really doing an amazing job of bringing this “Common States of America” to life in a visceral way. The horrors and shocking events that readers see come to life by this new hierarchy in order to maintain their “utopia” is terrifying, and coupled with the religious and philosophical discussions that bring to mind social and political issues our own world is facing at this time, this book is filled with so much tension.

To me, the heart of this narrative was in the unique character perspectives and the language used in this new world that speaks to the foundations of this society as a whole. The perspective readers get from both the newcomers to this society and the person practically running things was great to see as it gave a balanced viewpoint of this society, and the language very much reminded me of an almost cult-like mentality, as it often referenced a distrust of the outside world and showcased an often brutal hand of authority and standards that were impossible to live up to, leading to tragedy.

The Verdict

Memorable, haunting, and engaging, author James Rourke’s “Stone Souls” is a must-read dystopian sci-fi novel. The book’s commentary on our over-reliance on technology as a whole and the cost of perfection and a utopian society at the cost of humanity and morality as a whole made this a truly one-of-a-kind story and will stick with readers long after the book’s end. A Divisive Storm: A Dora Ellison Mystery Book 6 by David E. Feldman Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A man shot in his car leads an investigator into a web of conspiracy involving a group of white supremacists and a shocking series of murders in author David E. Feldman’s “A Divisive Storm”, the sixth book in the Dora Ellison Mystery series.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

This dark mystery thriller features a stunning twist that turns the tables on the story’s white supremacy angle.

Ray Drucker is shot in the face while sitting in his car in a drugstore parking lot, and his wife has hired Dora to find his killer. Dora quickly learns that his murder is connected to another, five years earlier. As the bodies pile up, Dora and Missy find that the killings are connected to a dark and violent web of white supremacists.

The victims were all members of a club with a barely hidden racist agenda.

ABN Banner

The Review

This was yet another truly compelling and captivating mystery thriller! The author has crafted a crime thriller that continuously keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, with twist after twist forcing the reader to question who the killer may be and whether or not the victims were truly victims at all. The tension was palpable as it built over the course of this mystery, from the personal tension in the protagonist’s lives to the tension that arose with each and every new piece of evidence that was found.

To me, the author has done an exceptional job of crafting characters that feel fully realized, and of creating a balance of chilling and heartfelt atmospheres using multiple POVs. The emotional and haunting perspective that readers get from the killer’s mindset and the complicated feelings that Dora gets as she investigates more and more of this case made this story so inviting, and the way the author was able to incorporate more personal story points like Missy’s family and the problems they face was great to see included in this story as well.

The Verdict

Thrilling, haunting, and entertaining, author David E. Feldman’s “A Divisive Storm” is a must-read mystery thriller. The powerful themes of LGBTQ-driven storylines and character growth, as well as the emotionally complex nature of this killer and the truth of these victims’ lives, made this a driven suspense thriller that readers will be talking about long after the book is finished.
