My Billionaire Casino Boss by Krichele Monroe Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A woman working for her brother’s best friend must navigate the complicated secrets of their shared past and the growing feelings they have for one another in author Krichele Monroe’s “My Billionaire Casino Boss”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

My brother’s best friend, the billionaire casino owner, is my new boss!

I needed a job and well, he was hiring…not great!

We had a one-night stand a few years back, and we’ve kept it hidden from my brother Eric.

Eric is not the understanding type, and he would be extremely pissed to find out after all this time.

He made a pact with Thomas, when we first met, that I was off-limits in every way.

Current “fling” Hillary wants Thomas desperately, so I’m being asked to play “pretend fiance” to help get rid of her.

I really hate games…

Who would’ve guessed all our fake dates and light kisses would turn into so much more?

Now I crave this man and every inch of his chiseled, hard body. And that face…I have no words.

A whole lot of time faking it together turned into deep love (and a surprise baby)…

How will my brother handle the fact we’ve lied to him for so long?

And will he give us his blessing after all?

The Review

This was yet another fantastic contemporary romance from this incredible author. The thing I always love seeing is the chemistry and inciting conflicts that drive the protagonists together. The secret past that Thomas and Lily share and the fear of their secrets getting back to Lily’s brother are a unique twist on the will they-won’t they storyline. The fast pace of the narrative and the unique setting of Tahoe is an added plus to this gripping romance.

To me, the heart of this story rested in the tension both between the protagonists and the people surrounding them, as well as the emotional connection between these characters and the chemistry that brews between them. The shock of their shared past and the heat that builds between them as the plot of the “fake fiancee” takes hold and their close proximity grows into something far more than a simple boss-and-employee relationship was engaging and kept the reader invested in these characters, and the heat readers will feel due to the almost “forbidden” nature of their relationship as they hide it from Lily’s brother was deeply felt.

The Verdict

Thoughtful, emotional, and memorable, author Krichele Monroe’s “My Billionaire Casino Boss” is a must-read contemporary romance. The twists and turns in the story and the intense emotional connection readers will make with these characters made this a truly compelling read, and one I’d come back to time and time again. The Unempty Spaces Between by Louis Efron Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author and poet Louis Efron share his debut collection of poetry in the book “The Unempty Spaces Between”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

A beautiful creation of song and scar, of emotional complexity and simple witness, Louis Efron’s debut collection The Unempty Spaces Between mingles the natural and human worlds in a series of accessible, personal, universal poems. From lush to bare, the landscapes he presents us with are so intertwined with and impacted by our actions that we realize the two have always been one. Brimming with meditations deep as winter snow and boundless compassion and curiosity, these vibrant poems remain grounded in a universal familiarity that opens us up to something greater.

The Review

This was quite a beautifully written and deeply introspective read. The author’s handle on imagery is felt immediately in this book, allowing the reader to become lost in the worlds and narratives that each poem brings to life as if they are caught in the emotional wave of creativity that spills across the blank canvas of life. The unique structuring of each poem speaks to the deep thoughts and the working world in which the author’s mind inhabits.

The poems themselves are quite engaging, allowing the reader to see pieces of themselves in the work, and even in the poems that don’t directly speak to them, the reader is able to contemplate and look inward at their own lives to the core of each poem’s meaning. The poem “Nicked Wedding Ring” is a particular favorite, exposing the depths of deep emotion in the wake of a loss and the juxtaposition of those who seek out that same death out of greed or power, revealing how death shows us our best and our worst.

The Verdict

Memorable, engaging, and thought-provoking, author Louis Efron’s “The Unempty Spaces Between” is a must-read poetry collection. The fast pace of the collection and the way readers can easily sit and read through this book in one sitting and yet return to it time and time again speak to the author’s powerful words and the heart behind them. The Review

What immediately stuck out to me as a reader was the depth of heart and passion that the author wrote. The way the author was able to dive into so many different avenues of thought, from making choices and caring about the important things in life to living life authentically and separating oneself from the media noise, allowed the reader to feel more connected to the subject matter, as it dealt with everyday life and yet felt like the importance was of a grand scale.

The thing that stood out to me the most was the author’s ability to connect with the reader. Rather than feeling like a step-by-step guide from an expert in a field, the book instead felt like an honest and open discussion from someone on the same path as the reader. The heart of each chapter came not in formal steps, but in guidance for the reader into the heart of each matter, allowing us to see the choices we make and go on an internal search for our own answers and paths forward in life.

The Verdict

Insightful, honest, and passionately written, author Anastasia Petrenko’s “Be Your Own Guru” is a must-read book. The wonderful play on words for each chapter allows the reader to get the depth of internal searching that is required to become our own guru, and the emotional depth of the writing itself will keep readers invested enough to come back to this book time and time again. The Review

This was an engaging and memorable novel for young readers. The fast pace of the narrative and the rich dynamics the author establishes between the protagonist and the other characters, both her parents and the young women on this softball team, all come together quite beautifully. The detail the authors put into the sport itself and the rich imagery in the author’s writing style really brought this narrative to life so wonderfully.

The heart of this story rested in the incredible character development and the heartfelt themes the authors established in this book. The themes of friendship, community, hard work, and determination all could be felt in this story, and the way the authors were able to get into the mindset of this young protagonist and capture the nerves and the anxiety that goes into making new friends and fighting for a spot on a team really captured the connectivity that a book like this needs for young readers.

The Verdict

Memorable, thoughtful, and entertaining, authors Ben Jackson and Sam Lawrence’s “Softball Strikeout: The New Girl” is a fantastic book for children and young readers everywhere. The close look at team sports and the balance of competitiveness and community within team sports mirrored protagonist Olivia’s struggles and personal motivations quite well, making this one book kids will not be able to put down. The School of the Haunted River by Colleen Gerwing Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

An outdoorswoman takes her niece on a two-week journey through the wilderness, sharing stories of her life and her passion for the outdoors in author Colleen Gerwing’s “The School of the Haunted River”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

We are all born of a river, and that in itself should be enough.

On a two-week outdoor winter snowshoeing trip in northern Saskatchewan with her niece Dilly, outdoor adventurer Jay tells stories as they hike and camp. Some are true – her outdoor training in Wyoming, her early life on the farm – and some are stories within stories within stories. A faux diamond necklace that mysteriously appears and disappears, Jay’s youthful encounters with the mysterious Cowboy, an inspiring series of books that she read on her long-ago canoe trip alone – all are underscored by Jay’s love and respect for the wild.

In The School of the Haunted River, the late Colleen Gerwing fashioned a novel based on her own life as an outdoorswoman, a novel about the natural world that will haunt and enchant even as it educates you.

The Review

This was a heartfelt and captivating read. The author does an incredible job of crafting a narrative that feels both genuine and creative all at once. The character development between Dilly and Jay is great to see, as it transcends the typical mother/daughter tension and instead brings that same energy to an aunt and niece setting, emphasizing the distance that has grown between them and the emotional journey they take both physically and mentally to come back together again.

For me, the heart of this story rests in the honest and heartfelt writing style the author brings to the narrative. With the author’s long history of being an outdoorswoman and hiking through similar trails as the protagonists of this tale, the setting and atmosphere of the novel felt authentic and memorable, creating a strong sense of imagery in the author’s writing.

The Verdict

Thoughtful, engaging, and captivating, author Colleen Gerwing’s “The School of the Haunted River” is a must-read novel. The creativity and entertaining aspect of the stories Jay tells to Dilly throughout their hike and the emotional bonds that are formed as their journey progresses made this a truly compelling read. The Brand of Brotherhood by T.D. Zummack Review

Two brothers find themselves on opposite sides of the law, and heading for the ultimate showdown in author T.D. Zummack’s “The Brand of Brotherhood”.

The Synopsis

Two brothers on opposite sides of the law . . .

Life is hard in 1869 Nebraska for the Warner family and brothers Colt and Brick. After the tragic loss of their mother, their father decides to take his sons west to California–but he dies along the way, leaving Colt and Brick, aged just twelve and ten, to finish the trip and fend for themselves in the Wild West.

With the help of a former gunfighter, Jim Borden, the pair forge their way together–until Brick decides to become an outlaw.

After years on opposite sides of the law, the two find themselves locked in a showdown where they must decide what matters more: following their own paths or their shared bond of brotherhood.

ABN Banner

The Review

This was a gripping and engaging Western. The author did an incredible job crafting a visceral and grizzled narrative, matching the Wild West’s tone and setting. The action and suspense that builds as these two brothers go down very different paths and the lives they lead separately help elevate the tension that builds not only between them but those in their lives as well.

To me, the heart of this story rests in the character development of these two brothers. The emotional toll that the loss of both their parents has on the brothers and the lessons they learned early on that created the divide between them made for compelling narrative decisions that helped elevate the overall arc for these characters. The test of loyalty and family is significantly explored here in this story and shows the depth of the characters and the high stakes that became a part of everyday life in those near-lawless days.

The Verdict

Memorable, entertaining, and captivating, author T.D. Zummack’s “The Brand of Brotherhood” is a must-read Western and a compelling drama following two brothers going down very different paths. The twists and turns in the brother’s stories and the roller coaster of emotions that help balance out the action and adventure elements of the story made this a truly marvelous story to behold. ABN Banner

The Review

This was an engaging and fast-paced mystery. The tension that builds within this family unit that the protagonist comes across is felt early on, and the atmosphere the author builds made the story feel like a classic whodunnit, much in the style of recent films like Knives Out. The suspense the narrative builds as the mystery is unraveled layer by layer really keeps the reader engaged.

Yet it was the rich character development and the honest and thoughtful inclusion of the racehorse lifestyle that made this feel like such an authentic and gripping mystery read. The author’s ability to develop these characters and the long history many of them shared together in such a short amount of time was amazing, and the inclusion of the author’s personal experience with horses and the life of a racehorse breeder and trainer made the protagonist feel more alive on the page.

The Verdict

Mesmerizing, heartfelt, and chilling, author Sasscer Hill’s Murder in the Bluegrass” is a must-read mystery novel that you won’t be able to put down. The twists and turns in the narrative, including a surprise character arc and the reveal of the killer, will have readers eager for the next entry into this engaging series. In addition, he confronts his internal demons, and with his return to Cyprus, might completely consume him.

For Aphrodite is set upon a path of cold vengeance and summons the Scylla, a legendary cryptid of the deep, to do her bidding. The creature wreaks havoc on the once idyllic coast of Cape Greco and the tourist resorts of Ayia Napa, Protaras, and Paphos.

Richard must not only face his devils but also the goddess, if he is to stop the terror that now lurks in the Mediterranean’s crystal-clear waters.

But how is he going to do it?

ABN Banner

The Review

This was an exhilarating and thoughtful read. The author once more brought a great deal of depth to the mythos and balanced the Greek supernatural and mythological forces that the protagonist was facing with the memorable, heartfelt character moments that made the characters so beloved and engaging to the reader.

The character development and world-building really pushed the narrative in new directions this time around. The author was able to hone in on the cruelty and vulnerability of Aphrodite and the determination and heroism of Richard Cole. The introduction of the Scylla and the higher stakes of the story and the life that Richard had carved out for himself were great to see come to life on the page, as was the relationship that Richard had with the people of Cyprus and the locals themselves.

The Verdict

Action-packed, emotionally driven, and perfectly tense, author Myron Edwards’s “Scylla: The Revenge” is a fantastic fantasy meets supernatural thriller with a large dose of mythology. The second entry into the author’s Cyprus Mysteries series, the novel has some great twists and turns, and the shocking finale will be both a gut-punch and a nail bitter to readers as they await the third book in the series. The Review

This was a compelling and intriguing read. The authors do an incredible job of writing in a way that allows the reader to feel both informed and entertained at the same time. The analysis of everything from the books the author wrote to the films that were inspired by them was spot on, giving insightful looks into how each mystery was both profoundly wild and yet always found a way to explain or make the circumstances of each crime feel believable.

The ways in which the authors wrote this book were the biggest standout to me as a reader. As a longtime fan of podcasts, it was great to see the authors bring that feeling of conversation and riffing off of one another to the page and the way the authors were able to convey the circumstances of the author’s life, going so far as to share passages written by the author herself, to show the mind behind these incredible and iconic stories made this a truly memorable reading experience.

The Verdict

Intriguing, engaging, and remarkably written, authors Meg Hafdahl and Kelly Florence’s “The Science of Agatha Christie” is a must-read nonfiction book and scientific and entertaining analysis of one of murder mystery’s greatest writers. The passion and heart for which the authors wrote on this subject and the amazing breakdowns of both the books and the characters that became iconic in their own right made this a compelling book to own.
