Chewed Up By The Jungle: A Dig Site Mystery Book 3 by Ann Charles Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

An archeologist and a photojournalist search for clues to the history of an ancient site in the Yucatan Peninsula in author Ann Charles’s “Chewed Up By The Jungle,” the third book in the Dig Site Mystery series.

The Synopsis

Whatever lies in wait in the jungle isn’t just history … it’s hungry!

Deep in the Yucatán Peninsula sits a long forgotten, mysterious site—lost to time, swallowed by the jungle, haunted by ancient secrets.

Archaeologist Dr. Angélica Garcia is chasing clues, and she will stop at nothing to uncover the site’s history. Was it a sacred center? A place of long-forgotten rituals? Or something far more sinister?

Quint Parker, a sharp-eyed photojournalist, is chasing Angélica. He never signed up for old curses, creepy whispers in the shadows, or man-eating mosquitoes. He just wants to make sure his girlfriend makes it out of the jungle—alive.

The deeper they dig into the past, the more they must confront a deadly truth: Some places should never be disturbed!

The Review

Filled with humor and heart, this historical and mythological adventure and suspense story does an incredible job of layering this narrative with compelling action sequences and engaging mysteries. The imagery and detail the author put into this writing really brought the heat and the textures of the jungle to life as the protagonist made their way in, delving into the history that was waiting to be discovered in this ancient site. The delivery of this imagery allowed the reader to feel the sweat-drenched humidity and the buzzing of the bugs as they traveled, creating an almost cinematic style of storytelling.

At its heart, however, was the rich character dynamics and attention the author gave Mayan lore and history. The interconnectedness behind Ann Charles’s other series, like the Deadwood series and others, was well brought out in these characters’ arcs, especially Quint’s sister being revealed to be none other than Violet in Deadwood. His bond and relationship with Angelica, and the way it played into their encounters with both the historical and paranormal side of this adventure, were wild. I loved the respect and detail the author brought to bringing Mayan culture to life on the page, while also adding her own unique spin to the stories being told.

The Verdict

Memorable, entertaining, and thrilling, author Ann Charles’s “Chewed Up By The Jungle” is an excellent entry in the Dig Site Mystery series. This must-read book does a great job of hooking new readers while also laying down some of the foundation of the first two books in the beginning, and while it is a slow-burning start, once the action picks up, the story never waivers, and readers will be hanging onto every twist and turn in the story. Echoes of Fortune: Shadows Over Cozumel by David R. Leng Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A holiday dive turns into a history-changing mystery filled with danger in author David R. Leng’s “Echoes of Fortune: Shadows Over Cozumel.”

Advertisements

The Synopsis

What would you risk to uncover a secret buried for over 150 years?

From bestselling and multi–award-winning author David R. Leng comes the next pulse-pounding installment in the Echoes of Fortune series.

When historian Jack Sullivan, Smithsonian curator Emma Wilson, and fellow former Navy SEAL Steve Johnson set out for a Thanksgiving dive off Cozumel, they expected nothing more than warm waters and forgotten wrecks. Instead, they uncover a Confederate ghost ship that vanished in 1865—along with a secret powerful enough to change history.

But they’re not alone. Shadowy mercenaries and a black-hulled yacht stalk their every move, determined to silence them before the truth surfaces. From dazzling reefs to the back alleys of Veracruz, Jack and his team are forced into a deadly game where history isn’t past—it’s a weapon.

Some secrets don’t want to be found. And some will kill to stay buried.

Perfect for fans of Steve Berry, Clive Cussler, Dan Brown, and James Rollins, Shadows Over Cozumel delivers nonstop action, historical intrigue, and a mystery that spans centuries.

kickstarter

The Review

For such a short novella, the author packs a lot of history and world-building into this narrative. The author expertly weaves mystery and intrigue into the modern-day adventure story, with a pacing that speaks to the story’s natural rhythm, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat and the tension on the page rising as these characters delve deeper into the mystery. The imagery in this story was so cinematic in its delivery, with details that brought the vibrant blues and greens of the ocean depths and the haunting shipwrecks to life effortlessly.

The dynamic between the three main characters and the engaging history were the main drives of this narrative. The exploration of Confederate soldiers’ weapons and gold has been the subject of numerous mysteries since the end of the Civil War. Yet, the ties into Mexico at the time and the idea of secret societies begun by these confederates, still being in play, added danger and suspense to the story. At the same time, the bond shared between Jack, Steve, and Emma not only showcases the bond that history can have on those seeking answers, but also highlights the hidden dangers of letting that sense of adventure become obsession.

The Verdict

Adrenaline-fueled, thrilling, and entertaining, author David R. Leng’s “Echoes of Fortune: Shadows Over Cozumel” is a must-read novella. The historical fiction series continues to expand and grow, not only with this fantastic cast of characters but also delivers a conspiracy and hidden history that would make for an excellent Netflix series, thanks to its dynamic and cinematic imagery, as well as the balance of action and character development. The Review

This was such an engaging and thoughtful read. The author did a fantastic job crafting a relatable and memorable narrative that will resonate with so many people worldwide. Still, especially in the United States, in the economy we are living through right now. The unique difficulties facing so many families right now, from lost jobs and poor prices to health pandemics and much more, the author touches upon some strong themes and balances this out with a unique and fun narrative that will drive the reader forward.

The heart of this story is character development, with protagonist Eli and his family becoming the POV that will resonate powerfully with the overall narrative. The lessons Eli learns along the way showcase the need to get rid of our prejudices and judgements of other people, learn to accept others, and be open to helping one another in life overall, making Eli and his family the everyman level of character growth.

The Verdict

The author makes a good point in this book that no one is all villain, all hero, or all good, but understanding one another is the best way forward for us all. In that tone, author Kelly Kenyon’s “A Simple Job” is a must-read adventure and genre fiction novel. Rune of Revenge (Outside the Thalsparr Series Book Four) Bjorn Leesson Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A legendary warrior must traverse battle after battle and seek out a means of not only fulfilling her father’s promise but helping her friend and promised hero fulfill her destiny in author Bjorn Leesson’s “Rune of Revenge”, the fourth book in the Outside the Thalsparr Series.

The Synopsis

The legendary saga of Ingrid Stone-Splitter, the most loyal and greatest friend of the Dokkrsdottir, after returning home amid strife and loss.

A powerful woman of many destinies, Ingrid embarks on journey after journey to fulfill the peaceful promises of her father

Harald, to help set the stage for the Dokkrsdottir to fulfill her destiny, and to be a hammer which smashes the Dark.

The Review

Another compelling and exhilarating historical fiction meets supernatural thriller. The author does a wonderful job of capturing the tone and the atmosphere of life in the Viking Age, especially during an age when Vikings expanded into Saxon territory and blended this with Norse mythology perfectly, making the supernatural and fantasy elements feel natural to the world around the characters.

The heart of the narrative was in the new protagonist, exploring a strong supporting character in the series and giving a free perspective to the legend and destiny of the Dokkrsdottir overall. The personal nature of Ingrid’s journey and how it ties into the cliffhanger finale from the last book will keep longtime fans of this series invested and thrilled to be in the thick of the action.

The Verdict

Memorable, thrilling, and entertaining author Bjorn Leesson’s “Rune of Revenge,” the latest and upcoming entry in the Outside the Thalsparr series, is a must-read for any action-driven historical fiction meets Viking fantasy series fans. The heartfelt delivery of Ingrid’s story and the exploration of that fine line between peace and the fight to maintain that peace will stay with readers long into the next book. These interests combined led to the Outside the Thalsparr series, with the first book in the series, “Runes of the Dokkrsdottir.” Bjorn was not formally trained as a writer and has worked in the industrial manufacturing field his entire life. Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

Serving as a prequel to the author’s Elementals of Nordica series, this book does an excellent job of delving more into the fantasy element of this franchise than ever before. The author really honed in on the age of kingdoms and magic perfectly, crafting a narrative that felt both large in scale and yet intimate all at the same time.

The heart of this story, as so often is in this amazing fantasy author’s work, is the rich character development and world-building that brought this world to life. The way the author was able to hone in on the history of this world, and the way the chemistry between Mali and Prince Caer brought out both the tension and the heart of the narrative really kept the reader engaged throughout this story.

The Verdict

From rich settings and detailed writing styles that honed in on the imagery this novel was rife with, author TC Marti’s “Spirit & Fire” is a must-read dark fantasy novel. The way the story plays into the future of this world from the Elementals of Nordica franchise, including the ancestors of some of the reader’s favorite characters, made this a thrilling and entertaining novel that is not to be missed. Anomaly Aftermath (The Mystic Rampage Series Book 3) by Hugh Fritz Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young man seeking revenge against an “evil” genie must find a powerful new weapon capable of stopping the genies once and for all in author Hugh Fritz’s “Anomaly Aftermath”, book 3 in The Mystic Rampage Series

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Soleil is lost in time, launched through history at the hands of the Old Ticker. Now he is out of his element. He must adapt to his new home, hope it’s possible to return to his original time, and pray for a chance to correct some mistakes along the way.

Tyrell knows Flarence killed Darren. He wants revenge, though a mere human with limited resources has no chance of harming a Genie. But Roy’s body is failing to the point that not even Genie blood can sustain him. The cause of Roy’s slow death may give Tyrell the opportunity he needs to make Flarence suffer.

The Old Ticker’s designs have been leaked. Now they rest in deadlier hands and more mischievous minds. A pair of spell-casting revolvers were nothing compared with the new weapons being developed in secret. The Genies may have met their match when a scientist emerges armed with the most devastating firearm the world has ever known.

These three novellas are the culmination of the Mystic Rampage series—historical fiction, contemporary action, and near-future science fiction. Connecting them all is their shared theme of overcoming regrettable decisions to forge a brighter future.

The Review

This was a rich and captivating read. Immediately what struck me was the author’s unique format of ending this story with three novellas that culminate in this fantasy and sci-fi action series. The depth the author dives into regarding the mythos and world-building of the series overall was so remarkable, as the story skirted these fantasy elements without sacrificing the real-world setting and character development that made the reader feel more connected to the story and the world found within.

The rich dynamics of the characters and the way the author was able to get multiple perspectives of this conflict between humanity and genies, and sometimes with one another, was so gripping to behold. The bond between Flarence and Claire, for example, or the almost modern-day Shakespearean nature of the conflict between Tyrell and Flarence was so compelling and kept me invested in this story.

The Verdict

Memorable, heartfelt, and captivating, author Hugh Fritz’s “Anomaly Aftermath” is the must-read action sci-fi and fantasy read you want to have this summer, and a great third entry into The Mystic Rampage Series. The twists and turns in the story and the shocking character development that sees emotional bonds formed and shattered, rise and fall, and all tied into the conflict ahead made this a truly memorable story. The Society of Necessities by Christopher Bowron Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

An unexpected family revelation and an even more shocking life or death situation lead a young man to discover a trove of family secrets that have put him and those he cares about in the crosshairs of a secret society hellbent on acquiring an ancient artifact in author Christopher Bowron’s “The Society of Necessities”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

In his lustful haste, he stepped off the curb behind a parked minivan. Turning, Daniel caught movement out of his left eye as the brown truck struck him. The impact was like a bug being hit by a fly swatter. He could feel his chest breaking-being thrown backwards onto the street, the back of his head hitting the pavement with a deadly force. All he could hear were tires screeching and his girlfriend Devi’s scream: “NO!”

Daniel St Croix is the beneficiary of his estranged grandfather’s estate-including a gold wedding band holding a powerful secret. The gold forming the band was originally given to a long-dead Egyptian Pharaoh from the gods who once walked the earth. Daniel must read Pierre St Croix’s well-kept journals to unravel the puzzle and imminent danger attached to his inheritance.

The Review

A fantastic blend of action, mythology, and sci-fi/fantasy style storytelling, author Christopher Bowron has crafted an incredible thriller for adult readers to enjoy. The story felt like a fantastic take on a modern-day Indiana Jones. The characters felt flawed yet realistic, while also showcasing incredible character growth that complimented the increasing mystery behind the sudden turn of events.

However, it was the mythos of the story that really stood out to me as a reader. From the book’s earliest chapters readers are treated to quite a shocking and enticing turn of events, as a brush with death itself sends the protagonist and his close circle careening into a series of events that are not only globe-trotting and death-defying, but mind-bending as well. The mystery itself is really engaging with the reader, and as each layer is peeled back in a fantastically paced read, readers will be shocked as new characters arise and the truth of not only the society but of Daniel’s family is fully revealed.

The Verdict

A mesmerizing, entertaining, and inviting action and adventure/thriller like no other, author Christopher Bowron’s “The Society of Necessities” is a must-read book for 2021 and one of the year’s contenders for best action and adventure novel. A great story with an inviting pace and twists and turns that will keep readers on the edge of their seats, this is not a book you want to miss. The Synopsis

Seven childhood buddies from L-town California set off on a trip around the globe that could cinch or crush their friendship.

Johann Felmanstien and his crew have a bond that Russian criminals would be jealous of. Besides just being homies from the same hood, they have their own dialect crafted to conceal talk of their rank activities, their own pseudo-culture packed with mad rites, and their own way of life born of booze, drugs, sex and travel to some of the sickest places on earth. They’re about to embark on their biggest journey to date; an 85-day trek across three continents, designed to cement their bond for good. Will it go down like that? Or will the trip meant to make them blood-brothers bust them all apart?

The Review

This was a well crafted, original and unique read that blended real world experiences into a creative story. While Johann and his crew are not the most politically correct group of guys, the test of friendship allows readers to see beyond that aspect of themselves and instead see the bond that these friends have formed through time and experiences, and how this trip challenged them in every way possible.

The story is a fantastic way to explore the world of traveling and exploration, while creating engaging personal stories and experiences that keep the reader invested in the character’s journey and adventures. Infused with raunchy humor, the bonds of friendship and a thirst for exploration, this is a story that will resonate with a lot of readers.

The Verdict

Overall this is a must read travel/adventure novel! In his spare time, Hans likes to study languages, the more obscure the better. He speaks ten, including Czech, Turkmen, Farsi and Spanish, with varying degrees of proficiency. He is also a huge geography and book nerd. When he’s not backpacking where he shouldn’t be or rattling off in some foreign tongue, he’s got his eyes crawling over a map of a long-forgotten Central Asian republic, or his nose buried deep in a book by a fellow B.A.M.F.

Interview with Author Angelica Clyman

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

I’m a painter, an educator, a business owner, and a mom (among other things)! I’ve always loved writing poetry and prose, but as I seriously pursued the visual arts, I put my writing aside…or tried to. As much as I attempted to convince myself that I wasn’t a writer, I couldn’t ignore the drive. I finally gave in while I was pursuing my Master of Fine Arts degree and made writing a priority again. I realized I didn’t have to make such a drastic choice – I could chase all my varied dreams.

What inspired you to write your book?

Actually, this was a story I was carrying with me in one form or another since I was twelve years old. I had a wonderful English teacher in seventh grade who really encouraged journaling and creative writing, and this story had its earliest beginnings in a class writing prompt. It changed a lot along the way, discarding its original Tolkien-inspired backdrop and undead characters, and finding its way into a dystopian world with Angelic magic, but the main characters and overall plot emerged from this time in my adolescence.

What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

I hope readers enjoy the beautifully desolate imagery and the slightly twisted love story, but on a deeper level, I hope the underlying philosophy comes through – that the answers we are all looking for truly come from within.

What drew you into this particular genre?

I feel like this story doesn’t neatly fit into one genre, but I’ve always been excited by the different forms fantasy can take. In my paintings, I often play with abandoned imagery, so a dystopian setting was natural for me.

If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?

The pirates would probably be the most fun to hang out with, but I think I could learn a lot from Asher Serafin. He’s one of the characters that is the least like me, but I strive to be as steady and unwavering as he is. He has seen the world before and after an apocalypse, he’s basked in the glow of the divine, he’s seen extreme good and evil (and the uncomfortable gray areas too), and he’s survived things that would have destroyed most. If I was having a difficult time and needed some perspective, he would be the one to go to.

What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

Goodreads and Facebook have been useful, and I’ve finally made an Instagram! Sometimes social media distracts me from writing, but I’m trying to stay connected.

What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Write the story you want to read. There are times that I almost stopped myself, worrying about what others might think or concerned that the book wouldn’t be well received. But in the end, only you can write your story, and something written honestly is bound to resonate with someone else.

What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

I’m currently working on the sequel to Dominion of the Star – the second book of the Descendants of the Fallen series – tentatively titled Resurrection of the Hierophant. It takes place seven years later, and it finds some of the characters much changed. I’m also working on the audiobook for Dominion of the Star, which is already proving to be an adventure!
