Where We Stand: Avina Vlogs

Hello citizens of Avina Vlogs!

This is your host, author Anthony Avina, and I am writing this post today because recently YouTube relaunched their Creator Hub and along with
that their benefits levels. In essence, this shows us where we as creators stand within the community thus far, and gives us goals for which we
want to achieve. In the past three years, I have gone from this incredibly shy, quiet human being with dreams of being a writer, to now this
moderately shy, somewhat more energetic human with his dreams of being a writer slowly coming together. In those three years we have grown as
a community, and now we sport about 575 subscribers, nearly to the big 600.

According to the new benefits program, we are nestled in the Graphite level, but are nearly to the next level, the Opal level, which we will get
upon hitting our first 1,000 subscribers. My main goals with this YouTube channel has always been to have a living memory of my life preserved
through video to remember, and to entertain and connect with my audience as I grew as an author. In these last three years I have far exceeded
what I expected to do with this channel, having nearly 600 subscribers and having made some great friends here in the community as well. Doing
this channel has given me the confidence to dream big and go for what I want, and I want to immerse myself in the world of YouTube even more.

This year I have started playing around with different video styles, from tags/challenges and podcasts to video reviews of all forms of entertainment
and even some short films and trailers. I also have always enjoyed life casting my daily life, but for now I’m going to be saving those videos
for special or naturally entertaining moments until I get to a place where I can make my daily life interesting. I want to expand my brand and my
outreach on YouTube, and in order to do that I want to cultivate videos you guys love to watch.

I would love to reach 1,000 subscribers in the next few months. You guys seem to love the video reviews and I would love to know more about what
you like to see on this channel. The biggest help you current Avina Vlogs family members could be is to share the videos you watch, leave some
comments or questions so we can get some awesome Q&A videos going, and then leave some suggestions for future videos. Maybe I can review or share
gaming news/theories/previews, or talk about my love and fan theories for Game of Thrones and other pop culture shows. Or maybe you guys would like
to see more serious subject videos, much in the same vein as one of my favorite YouTubers, Jaclyn Glenn. I have a great new video series idea I
briefly mentioned in my last vlog, where I want to make writing challenge videos, in which I post a challenge to you guys each week, (write a
poem, essay, short story, first chapter of a novel, etc), and not only would I share my work for the week or month or whatever we decide, but I
would pick a couple of you guys to shout out your channels or social media feeds, then read what you submitted. You can submit the actual work
in the comments or you can publish your work to Wattpad or your website/blog and send me the link to share.

I love YouTube and writing, and want to combine the two to build an incredible community here on the internet. I am becoming so passionate about
the channel, and I want to grow it into the community I know it can be. So I’m reaching out to you, my incredible friends and community, to help
me make that a reality. The first stop is the Opal level, but I know that together we can grow this channel into something truly amazing. I hope
you’ll join me in doing so. Thanks everyone, and I hope to hear from you guys in the comment section or on social media!

Don’t You Cry by Mary Kubica Book Review:

A dark, twisted tale that takes the reader on a roller coaster of emotions with every twist and turn. That’s how this writer would describe author Mary Kubica’s thriller, Don’t You Cry. Secrets and lies lead to a mysterious disappearance and a strange encounter for the two protagonists of this incredible story.

When a young woman living in downtown Chicago named Esther Vaughn disappears without a trace, her roommate and friend Quinn is left to figure out what happened to her friend after she discovers a mysterious note left behind and signed “My Dearest.” Meanwhile a young man named Alex Gallo living in a small Michigan town outside of Chicago meets a mysterious woman, and he is immediately drawn to her. Yet soon his infatuation leads him onto a dark path that he never thought he’d be on. Will Quinn discover what happened to Esther, or are there dark secrets that will have her questioning who her roommate really is? Will Alex discover that his crush will come with unintended consequences?

The themes explored in this novel are the biggest draw of this incredible new thriller. Obsession and deception drive this amazing plot, while the characters themselves embody these themes to the point where anyone can be involved in the disappearance, and by the time the book ends the connection between Alex and Quinn, two strangers, will have readers on the edge of their seat. This is a must read thriller in 2016, so be sure to pick up your copies of Mary Kubica’s Don’t You Cry, available now!

Zenith (The Androma Saga #1) by Sasha Alsberg and Lindsay Cummings Review

Imagine if science fiction cult classics such as Joss Whedon’s Firefly or the visceral story of the hit gaming series Mass Effect, and then you
put a YA spin on both franchises, then you’d have this soon to be fan favorite YA Science Fiction book Zenith (The Androma Saga #1) by Sasha
Alsberg and Lindsay Cummings. The fresh voice of Sasha Alsberg when combined with the seasoned voice of author Lindsay Cummings makes for one
of the most adrenaline fueled, heavily character driven YA stories I’ve read.

First, here is the official story synopsis.

There is darkness sweeping across the stars.

Most know her as the Bloody Baroness, the captain of a fearsome glass starship called The Marauder. Androma and her crew strike terror in the
hearts of those who cross them amongst the many corners of the Mirabel Galaxy.

When a routine mission goes rogue, the all-female crew is captured by a bounty hunter from Andi’s past and forced into a job that could, quite
literally, start a war that will devour worlds.

Meanwhile, on the far side of the galaxy, the ruthless ruler Nor waits in the shadows of the planet Xen Ptera, biding her time. The final pieces
are about to fall into place, liberating a plan that will tear Mirabel in two.

As the Marauder hurtles toward the unknown, there is one lesson that proves to be true: No one can be trusted in a galaxy that runs on lies and
illusion.

From internet sensation Sasha Alsberg and multi-genre author Lindsay Cummings comes a new serialized space opera, full of action, intrigue, and
steamy star-crossed romance.

Perfect for fans of Hugh Howie, Sarah J Maas, and Beth Revis.

Now as both a newcomer to the YA genre and a fan of science fiction, I was already excited about the release of this book. What really sets this
book apart is that there is no set good guys in this story. The protagonist of this story, Androma, the Bloody Baroness, is a feared outlaw who
isn’t afraid to get bloody and kill to accomplish her goals. While there are even deadlier threats in the galaxy, she isn’t ruled by an overwhelming
sense of honor or duty, but rather very real human emotions and complicated histories that have shaped her into the person she now is. It was
refreshing to see a predominately female driven book that showcased how men aren’t needed to have an action-fueled adventure.

The pace of this first story is very fast, and the complicated history the characters bring to the book immediately hook the reader in, to the
point where I finished this book in one day and am ready for a second go. In just a few pages, the reader immediately gets a sense of just how
large this galaxy is, and the bubbling conflict that is sure to consume it with just one conflict. Overall, this is one of the most promising new
YA series that both YA readers and science fiction readers will want to consume now. By the end of the story, readers will be eager to sink their
teeth into The Androma Saga #2, so be sure to pick up your copies of Zenith (The Androma Saga #1) now and help support authors Sasha Alsberg and
Lindsay Cummings to get more of their incredible work out in stores now! Be on the lookout for an official video review on my channel, Avina
Vlogs, soon!

The Reaping Synopsis

Man is no longer alone at the top
of the food chain.

From the East a new threat to a struggling civilization
emerges, spreading across the land like a cancerous stain, leaving in its wake
the shattered remnants of a species teetering on the brink of extinction.

After the dead walked and society crumbled, mankind
struggled back from the brink of extinction. Having fled the cities, the
survivors lead a more pastoral lifestyle, while the cities to the east stand as
silent monuments to the former progress of man.

But they are not empty.

Not only did mankind leave behind the trappings of his
progress, but the creatures of the night that once fed along the shadowy edges
of a well lit world. Inhabiting that twilight space between day and night, between
what is real and imagined, between dreams and nightmares.

In Bryn Mawr Window is infected when he is bitten by a
Reaper. As he struggles against the rising bloodlust, viewing his friends as a
potential meal, they set out to the East in the search of a cure.

Along the way they learn more about the nature of the world
they inhabit, their own past, and the part they each play in a potential
future. Crossing paths with a shadowy figure who leaves small tokens from each
of their own history. Little objects that carry powerful emotions linked to
major changes in their past lives.

In the nations former capitol they are confronted by the
master who reveals the cold truth about the cosmos as he prepares his own army
of the undead to enslave what remains of mankind.

All Roads Lead to Terror Synopsis

The horrors of the
past meet the brutality of the present.

On the day of his birth the dead walked and society
crumbled. His mother took one look at him and pronounced him Meat. He survived,
she didn’t.

Fourteen years have passed and obscurity means survival in an increasingly
dangerous world. For the survivors compound at Bremo Bluff that obscurity is
threatened when a savage band abducts a group of children from the compound.

Accompanied by his three friends Window, Einstein, and Billie-Bob, Meat embarks
on a quest to rescue the children. A journey that will lead them into
adulthood, with a brief detour through the Dreadlands, as they confront the
harsh reality of a brutal world beyond the barriers that had served to protect
them.

In the dead city of Richmond they will confront that savage cult of children
who worship a creature of the night. These creatures, once considered the
nightmare imaginings of a fevered mind, are now awake in a world where the
population that once served as their food source has been reduced.

Awake and very, very, hungry.

The Reaping Excerpt:

They heard her before they saw her, whistling a soft tune, a
haunting melody that was anything but  upbeat. Like a funeral dirge best
shared during the procession when the casket takes its final journey to the
grave. From around a bend in the small stream the sound came, competing with
the babble of the water rushing over smooth stone, and the restless voice of a
soft breeze that stirred what leaves remained, their dead bodies chattering
against one another like skeletons dancing a frenzied jig.

Cautiously they approached the sound, coming upon an old woman kneeling on the
bank as she washed clothes in the cold waters of the stream. Her calloused
hands were red with the cold, and as they rounded the bend she pushed herself
to her feet with the help of a gnarled cane, tilting her head to one side like
she could hear their footsteps on the grassy bank.

“I been waiting for you boys to find me. Mama said you would be around,” she
said as the hem of her long dress caught in the moving water and the fabric
drank its fill. She wore a black shawl stretched across her shoulders, her
white hair in stark contrast as it rested against her back.

“Don’t be bashful now, I know you’re out there, I can smell ya.” She turned her
head to look in their direction, the cataracts coating her eyes capturing the
sunlight to lend them a silvery appearance. Her face was a road map of
wrinkles, each one denoting a different emotion, the lines radiating out from
her narrow lips ready at a moments notice to punctuate a smile or a frown.

Window moved past the others, following the narrow strip of brown grass that served
as a bank to keep the stream on its course. She blinked several times as he
approached, taking a hesitant step back as he got closer, his six two frame
towering over her diminutive five three posture.

“He got to you, didn’t he boy?” She said with a faint quiver in her voice. It
was obvious she was frightened by Windows sudden movement, but at the same time
she carried herself like one who was prepared to meet her end. She reached out
with one hand, and gently caressed Windows cheek like a mother comforting her
child.

“How did you know we was coming?” Window said.

She smiled then, relaxing her grip on the walking stick she used to keep
herself upright. “Mama told me back when I was a young un. She said, Sophie,
you help them four boys when they come, you wait right there, don’t go running
off, cause they’s gonna need your help.”

“How long ago was that?” Window said.

“All my life I’ve known, and I’ve waited, cause mama told me I had to. From the
time I was a wee child running barefoot down to old man Winner’s little store,
I’ve known of you.”

“But that was before we were even born,” Window said as the others joined them
and the old woman tilted her head to each in turn.

“You can see us?” Billie-Bob said.

She laughed then, her voice filled with a joy that helped push back the chill
of the late fall day, offering a brief respite from the cold as a spreading
warmth filled each of them at the sound of her merriment.

“Everything that has been, and is yet to be, has been writ down for those who
know where to look,” she said before turning to look in Billie-Bob’s direction.

“I can see you with my heart, and that’s all I need. I can see your pain, you
did something you thought was bad, but it wasn’t. Sometimes we are pushed to do
things we otherwise would not do, for these things we can’t be held
accountable, least ways not to ourselves. Where each of you are going you need
to leave your guilt behind, it’s the only way you will survive, the only way
the world as we know it will continue on its way.”

“What good is this world?” Einstein said, “why should we worry about letting it
continue on its way.”

The old woman reached over and touched Einstein’s cheek, “I feel your pain son,
but sometimes we have to know loss before we can know joy. It’s the way of the
world and it won’t do us any good to fight it. You can’t see that now, but you
will.”

“Can you help us?” Meat said.

“That’s why I’m here,” she said as she took Windows hand into her own, “he’s
got something very bad in him,“ she said as she nodded at Window,
"they calls them reapers, I can see it hunkered down next to his soul,
trying to hide from me. I can’t help with that, but I know what you need to do.
Let’s go inside where we can talk.” She looked around, searching the woods
around them for other intruders, the boys followed suit, finding only the empty
forest.

When they turned back a small cabin stood behind the old woman. It hadn’t been
there before, Meat was sure of it, it was like it had materialized right out of
the forest behind them.

About the Author

Unlike other writers who knew they wanted to write the
moment they became self aware, Richard’s path to taking up the pen followed a
more leisurely route.

As a child he wanted to be a fighter pilot, later he thought
it would be neat to be a rock star. Unfortunately, as an introvert, he was not
suited for the stage. Once he gave up the guitar, much to the relief of his
parents, he turned his attention to making movies.

Armed with an 8mm movie camera, several rolls of aluminum
foil liberated from the kitchen, and the spare bed sheets, he filmed his first
masterpiece. The story was about a space ship crash landing in the woods behind
his house. His sister starred as the damsel in distress while his little
brother, wrapped like a mummy in the spare bed sheets, chased her through the
woods.

His career as a famous director ended before it even got off
the ground when on opening night his mother recognized the missing bed sheets
and  aluminum foil resulting in his
grounding for the remainder of that summer.

A voracious reader, he believes writing is the most intimate
form of communication possible. The reader permits the writer access to their
mind, and the readers reality dissolves as they focus on the narrative of the
tale being spun.

His love of the macabre was sparked at an early age when he
would sit on his grandmother’s porch listening to her tell ghost stories.
During the summer he and his cousins would sleep in his grandmother’s back
yard, within sight of the abandoned haunted house next door, and spend the
night scaring one another with gruesome tales of shadowy creatures that went
bump in the night.

During his life he has played a series of roles, husband,
father, son, and lover, but his favorite by far is grandfather. He and his wife
of twenty plus years have raised four children, and helped raise eight
grandchildren. They provide a secure home to a yellow lab named Max and a cat
who will answer to either Flame or Furball. His loving wife, Dena has
experienced first hand the exasperation of living with a writer whose mind has
a tendency to wander at the most inappropriate times. Yet she manages to keep
his feet firmly planted on terra firma.

The Wharf Butcher by Michael K. Foster Review

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the author and Booklover Catlady Publicity in return for a fair and honest review.
Many thanks!

Have you ever wanted to find a book that perfectly embodied the spirit and format of such great shows as Broadchurch and Sherlock? Then look
no further than author Michael K. Foster’s incredible novel, The Wharf Butcher. An intense crime thriller that does an excellent job of analyzing
character growth and showcasing the deep emotional scars that make a monster in our society, this is a fantastic read!

A serial killer is stalking Tyneside. But there is a pattern to his killings, his choice of victims, his method of slaughter. David Carlisle, a
criminal profiler, is brought in to assist DCI Jack Mason with his task of identifying the killer and stopping him in his tracks. The Wharf
Butcher is a fast-paced thriller that shines a light on the dark forces at work within the corridors of power, in the board room and the police
force itself. The clock is ticking to catch the monster that has been unleashed. But first Carlisle must get inside the killer’s head…

Combining the intrigue of a whodunit with the disturbing nature of serial killers and the emotional core of a great television drama, the first
novel in the building series focused on two intriguing new investigators is a smash hit from the opening pages all the way to the shocking
conclusion. The depth for which the author explores each side of a murder investigation is phenomenal to read, and not only do we get glimpses
into the personal lives of the investigators and how their lives affect their work, but readers will love to get into the gritty dark side of
the mentality of this serial killer. Will the investigators be able to stop this killer before it’s too late? Be sure to pick up your copies of

DC Comics Rebirth #1 Review:

One of the most intricate storylines to be introduced to the great DC comics mythology has got to be DC Comics Rebirth. In issue #1, written by
Geoff Johns, showcases a deep plot that explains a lot of the rewrites and storylines that have been written since the incredible Flashpoint
storyline. Focusing on a time and reality displaced Wally West, who is on the verge of being absorbed into the speed force, the issue showcases
both past and present storylines and shows that after the events of Flashpoint, before time could right itself, an all-powerful being took
10 years away from the heroes, destroying relationships and removing legends and heroes altogether. Wally is the only one who remembers the
original timeline, and he must race to find someone who can bring him out of the speed force before he dies, for it’s not only his life on the
line, but the entire multiverse as this being still looms large as a threat to the heroes.

Now the twists and turns in this story were absolutely amazing. The emotional core that comes with Wally’s story and his struggle to save his
universe and correct what’s been broken makes the issue all worthwhile, and the big twist that comes with the revelation of a new power in the
multiverse makes this an unforgettable issue. Both longtime and new fans of DC Comics will feel a strong connection to this new storyline, and
the future looks bright with one of the most creative comic books in recent history. Geoff Johns did a wonderful job writing this story and if
this is any indication of what the coming story will entail, fans are in for a big treat. Be sure to tune into the latest developments with
DC Comics Rebirth in the months to come!

Curse of the Sphinx by Raye Wagner

Greek
mythology has never been more alive than in Raye Wagner’s Curse of the
Sphinx, the first in her Sphinx series. In this incredible YA novel,
a
young girl named Hope Nicholas has spent her entire life on the run. No
one knows she even exists, and that’s a good thing. Living under the
constant
threat of being hunted, she and her mother have moved from town to
town, never staying long enough to make any sort of connection or
put
down roots. However, soon Hope’s mother is tragically ripped away from
her, and she’s left orphaned and alone. Is this the fulfillment of
Apollo’s
curse, the work of shadow monsters from the Underworld, or have
demigods finally found her? That’s the mystery that presents itself
to
Hope as the reader must follow a young girl who’s struck by tragedy and
must navigate a deadly world where she can’t trust anyone but herself.

Getting
to see mythology come to life like this was a real treat when reading
this book. Raye Wagner writes with a fresh and invigorating voice
while
navigating the lines between the fictional world she created and the
real hardships of loss and independence young teens go through. It
was
incredible to see the legends and lore from Greek mythology get
incorporated into this fiction world by making them well known and real
tangible
gods and creatures that humanity believes in wholeheartedly. Overall,
the incredible story and look at what makes a monster and what
makes a
hero are amazing to see unfold, and if this book is any indication, the
Sphinx series is one that is not to be missed. Raye Wagner is a
shining star in the YA genre and this reviewer cannot wait to see more from her in the future.

Resthaven by Erik Therme:

The struggles of the teenage years mix with heart pounding terror in this 2016 Kindle Scout Winner by author Erik Therme, titled Resthaven.

In this thriller, young Kaylee finds herself forced into a childish game when she meets up with a group of girls in the new town she recently moved to. When the girls are taken to an abandoned retirement home to take part in a scavenger hunt, Kaylee soon discovers a bruised young boy in the building, but when she tries to lead him to safety, she discovers the doors are locked and her friends are nowhere to be found. Soon she’ll learn that there are real terrors in the world, and ghosts are the least of her worries in this night of scares and tears.

The blend of YA character development and adult thriller plot line are a perfect combination in this novel. It does a wonderful job of highlighting some of the very real life struggles young teens go through while also giving a much needed boost of female driven story in a genre filled with male driven action by making the majority of the characters female, including an amazingly strong female protagonist like Kaylee. Overall this is a fantastic novel that bridges the gap between YA and adult fiction and showcases the immense talent of breakout author Erik Therme. Be sure to pick up your copy of Resthaven today!
