I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young couple separated by tragic circumstances must navigate life without one another until a twist of fate tries to bring them back together in author Jose Orlando Castaneda’s “Watercolors and Tears.”

The Synopsis

Manuel, a young Ecuadorian, sells medicinal herbs in the market and paints watercolors in his spare time. In search of a better life, he emigrates to Port Chester (New York). Elvira, his wife, intends to join him by sea, but she is shipwrecked. Her plans change after her rescue, and she ends up in Madrid, where she is employed as a nanny. Antonio, the father of the children in her care, discovers her secretly reading a novel from his antique books collection. He slyly labels a passage with a strip of paper, intending for her to read it. Intrigued, Elvira responds by indicating her own phrases in the book. That’s the beginning of an innocent exchange of literary quotes through which love quietly slips in.

While Manuel takes refuge in his paintings and herbal remedies on the other side of the world, Elvira finds herself falling for Antonio. When her hopes are dashed through a casual blunder, she seeks to regain her marital home and travels to Port Chester to be with her husband. Confronted by an unexpected tragedy, she discovers the watercolors that Manuel has painted in his solitude. His brushstrokes cut deep into her heart.

The Review

What an emotional and heartbreaking tale. The balance the author found in the romance and heart of these two protagonists and their struggles amongst the perils and hardships often found in the story of immigrants was thoughtful and heart-wrenching. The author’s imagery and descriptive nature allowed them to feel and experience this narrative from a perspective far from their own yet relatable in many ways.

The story also speaks to the hardships many couples face in life and how the story of immigration plays into those struggles as well. The bond that Manuel formed with a young boy and his mother in America and the connection Elvira forms with Antonio speak not only of the individual experiences that this couple found on their own but also how it showcased the evolution of a relationship and the way people’s perspectives and needs evolve over time, a concept many couples will be able to relate to.

The Verdict

Deeply felt, authentically written, and memorable, author Jose Orlando Castaneda’s “Watercolors and Tears” is a must-read romance meets drama. The balance of tension, emotion, and heart will keep readers enthralled and invested in these characters, and the honest way the author writes out this story and the shocking ending will stay with readers long after the book ends. About the Author

After finishing high school in his hometown (Ibagué, Colombia) and winning a local history contest, JOSÉ ORLANDO CASTAÑEDA emigrated to the United States. Following a liberal arts college degree, a master’s degree from Columbia University, and a J.D. from Pace University, he opened a law firm in Port Chester, New York, where he later became a judge. That transition is presented in his short story The Flower Parade.

His profession allowed him to work with the immigrant community and appreciate up close the consequences of separation: broken homes, children growing up without their parents, and the grief of those left behind. “We live for those we love and stay, and we die for those we love and are gone,” an elderly man once told him. The stories he heard throughout his career motivated him to write WATERCOLORS AND TEARS, an absorbing and realistic tale written against the background of immigration, a relentless phenomenon that, while seeking progress, isolates families and truncates love.

The Synopsis

Felicity, Art, War and Peace: This is the inspiring story of an English-born artist, who, born in 1911, lost her father in the first world war. Her school years were in Italy, where her Scottish mother owned a tearoom, and where she began her art education. She married a British army officer and accompanied him to India where she attended art school. But further education was cut short in 1939 by tumultuous war years followed by two years in Germany while her second husband, Rupert, a close friend of Tommy her first husband, served in the British Army of Occupation. Both men were wounded, Rupert severely and Tommy fatally. Then, a move to South Africa in 1948 resulted in relative peace, her style evolving from classic realism to include more impressionistic representation of her subjects. After moving back to England in 1972, her work was twice accepted for exhibition by the Royal West of England Academy. She remained intent on capturing movement, expression, and communication among domestic and wild animals, and birds. The Slimbridge Wetland Centre, as well as her own garden with her ducks and rabbits, provided an ideal environment for inspiration. Missing her 100th birthday by only a few months, her century-long story captures all that her life and commitment to art encompassed, making an enduring impression on children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends who in many ways have contributed to preserving her memory.

The Review

Yet another amazing and well-written biography that captured both the emotional connection the authors had to the subject of the book and the lifetime of experiences that their lives comprised. The century of history that Felicity’s life experienced was so well documented and infused both hope and passion into events and experiences that were both inspiring yet terrifying at times. The authors did an incredible job of not only sharing a wealth of information but showcasing the importance of finding one’s community to thrive and grow, something that is so important to one’s mental and emotional health.

The heart of this book rests in both the personal experiences and lifetime of events the authors brought to life for Felicity and the beauty of the art from Felicity and the importance of the themes that each art piece and associated memory brought. The honesty and passion of the authors writing and the heart found in the amazing pieces of art that the writers featured from Felicity brought a depth of connection to Felicity as a subject and as a person that the reader is able to make.

The Verdict

Brilliantly written, heartfelt, and engaging, authors Piers Blackett and Annah Otis’s “Felicity, Art, War and Peace” is a must-read biography about a strong, inspiring, and artistically creative woman who impacted her family and the world around her. The heart and emotion that the authors emote in this book’s writing and the wealth of information were so inviting to read about as a reader, and those who come to learn about Felicity and her life will not want to put this book down. The Grumpface by B.C.R. Fegan Review

A new children’s book looks to become an instant classic in The Grumpface by B.C.R. Fegan. Harking back to the days when fairy tales and folklore were intertwined, this story of a mythical creature and the young man who must try to outsmart it in order to escape is something children will love instantly. Here is the synopsis:

The Grumpface is a poetic fairy-tale that tells the story of Dan, an inventor who ventures into a forest looking for a rose. Instead he finds the mysterious Grumpface who threatens to hold him captive unless he passes some difficult challenges. What follows is a humorous adventure that neither Dan nor the Grumpface could have anticipated.

The Grumpface is a tale in the spirit of any grand adventure. It is about a clumsy young inventor’s quest for love and the challenges he must face to find it. It is also a tale of bravery, absurdity and happiness, and the power of these qualities over negativity and sheer grumpiness.

Every parent will be acquainted with their own little ‘grumpface’ now and then. This story stands as a small piece of hope – that no matter how ingrained the grump, there will always remain in every one of us a smile or a laugh just waiting to come out.

A wonderful blend of poetry and childlike wonder, this amazing story was incredibly well written and the artwork was superb. A wonderful hark back to the days of classic children’s stories, the story helped blend elements of romance, adventure, self-worth and the fight to never give up on your dreams. The poetry inspired writing was well done, and the artwork made great work of vivid color schemes and warmth that many children will flock to read.

Overall this was a fantastic children’s book that any parent would love to read to their child. A great story with wonderful artwork, B.C.R. Fegan has a wonderful grasp on not only what children will be entertained by and enjoy, but on the kind of stories parents will want their children to read and grow up with. I highly recommend this book to anyone who reads children’s books, and I look forward to seeing more from this incredible author.
