A journalist uncovers a deadly conspiracy in her small town at a local book fair in author J.J. Macaw’s “Depths of Deception.”

The Synopsis

The beautiful vibrant seaside village of Coral Cove is hosting its famous book fair and Tony Blane anticipates unveiling his manuscript exposing an increasing environmental crisis affecting the cove’s water and wildlife. Maxy Harper, a renowned journalist, returned to her childhood home to detox from the 24/7 stress of the crime beat in Washington. She was Tony’s fierce childhood friend and high school sweetheart and is covering the book fair for her podcast.

Excitement turns to horror when Tony’s manuscript vanished and things take a darker turn when Tony’s mentor is found dead at the fair. Maxy’s instincts kick in with a vengeance, and she dives into questioning witnesses, uncovering secrets past and present that point to the imminent risks to Coral Cove’s children and wildlife. Maxy and Tony embark on an investigation filled with danger, quirky locals, including a witchy “wise woman”, a Haitian grandmother known to be a voodoo priestess, and dangerous corrupt officials.

Threats build to stop the investigation. The arrogant police chief is aggressively pressured to downplay the concerns and wrap up the murder quickly. Maxy follows clues and leads a covert expedition to a neighboring island, exploring pirate caves and discovering toxins that explain the poisoning of the cove. A deadly confrontation ensues, forcing her to use every ounce of her wits to outsmart their pursuers. As things heat up and danger lurks, Maxy and Tony grow closer, rekindling their affections of long ago.

An aggressive grass roots campaign brings the community to a rapid boil creating intense pressure on officials that can’t be ignored. Reluctant state and federal authorities are forced into Coral Cove’s fight. The heir of the Allen family businesses joins Maxy and newfound official support to uncover the fraud and corruption at the root of the increasing jeopardy to Coral Cove.

The community simmers as the mysteries behind the poisoning and death are uncovered.

The Review

This was such a compelling and driven cozy mystery thriller. The author did an incredible job of building on the mystery and intrigue of the first novel in this series, capturing the setting of Coral Cove perfectly while delving deeper into the town’s past and the history that shaped it into what it is today. The rich character dynamics at play, both in terms of the protagonists and the townspeople themselves, all kept me invested in the overall story being told.

It was the way the author balanced the narrative that made this feel so fresh and engaging. The blend of environmental justice with the murder mystery and conspiracy angle the story took kept the steady pacing exciting, and the tension as the investigation was brought to new heights made this an exhilarating journey. Blend this with the fantastic trio of Maxy, Tom, and Tony, and their dedication to the truth, along with the promise of a possible rekindled romance, and this is the perfect small-town mystery to get lost in.

The Verdict

Harrowing, mystery-driven, and entertaining, author J.J. Macaw’s “Depths of Deception” is a must-read cozy mystery thriller. The twists and turns in the story, the depth of character arcs in this narrative (including the town itself), and the atmospheric nature of the story will keep readers invested in the story and these characters for hopefully more stories in the future. The Review

This was such a unique and compelling read. The balance between the author’s moving poetry and exploration of what makes these two specific types of cats so fascinating, combined with the beautiful and focused imagery of the photographs, made this book a truly memorable read. The creativity and artistry of the poems themselves brought their own sense of imagery to the page, infusing heart and emotion that speaks to anyone who has ever felt the call or been a pet parent in their lives.

The realism of the photography and the way these beautiful cats popped off the page was incredible. The images helped bring a face to the loving poems that showcased the author’s knowledge and experiences, and the earnestness, and the way each page captures both the highs and lows emotionally of being a pet parent made this one book that readers would instantly connect with.

Bad Dream: A Dreamer Story by Nicole Maines and Illustrated by Rye Hickman Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young woman facing a destiny that was never hers must learn to accept herself to save those she loves in author Nicole Maines’s “Bad Dream: A Dreamer Story.”

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Dreamer’s origin story has finally arrived, featuring characters from Galaxy: The Prettiest Star in DC’s first YA crossover!!

Nia Nal’s spent her whole life taking a back seat to her older sister, Maeve, who’s expected to inherit their mother’s Naltorian powers—the ability to see the future through dreams. But when Nia starts having visions of the future, she must suppress her powers to protect her relationship with her sister. There’s only one problem: Nia can’t stay awake forever…

From actress, activist, and writer Nicole Maines, who originated the role of Dreamer—the first trans superhero on TV—and artist Rye Hickman comes the highly anticipated origin story of a girl who must accept her destiny to discover she’s more powerful than she could ever dream of.

The Review

Of all the characters that have been introduced into DC Comics in recent years, my two favorites have been Jon Kent’s Superman and Dreamer. Between author and actress Nicole Maines stellar performance on the acclaimed television series Supergirl as the titular hero Dreamer, or the hero’s introduction into mainstream DC Comics, Nia Nal’s rise to heroism and the complexity of her character arc, she is one of the best characters to arrive in the modern DC Comics age and a great representation of the direction comics needs to be taking. Seeing a cosmic, spiritual, and thought-provoking narrative from the actress who brought the character to life and breathed fresh life into the world of DC Comics made this graphic novel so special.

The crossover and connection shared with newcomer Galaxy, another new DC Comics hero, and the balance the author found with both action and storytelling was incredible. The vibrant colors and bright artwork from Rye Hickman were sensational, and the depth of mythos the author explored in Dreamer’s backstory helped elevate what fans knew of the character from her time on Supergirl and took it to a whole new level. The twists and turns in the story also helped elevate the LGBTQ+ themes, providing a much-needed exploration of the power of identity and acceptance, as well as facing the challenges of the ignorance many people have towards the transgender community, especially.

The Verdict

Compelling, entertaining, and brilliantly written, “Bad Dream: A Dreamer Story” by author Nicole Maines and artist Rye Hickman is a must-read DC Comics graphic novel. The twists and turns of the narrative, the beautiful illustrations, and the vital messaging behind this remarkable origin story solidified why Nicole Maines is not only an emerging voice in the comics world but a much-needed voice that is powerful and invokes great emotion and thought in every piece she brings to life, and Dreamer is the perfect hero to represent that. This Land is Our Land: A Blue Beetle Story by Julio Anta and Artist Jacoby Salcedo Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A teenager must fight to protect humanity and his community in author Julio Anta’s “This Land is Our Land: A Blue Beetle Story.”

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Writer Julio Anta and artist Jacoby Salcedo, the dynamic team behind the young adult graphic novel Frontera, take readers on a gripping and inspiring journey filled with high stakes and heart as Jaime embraces his new calling as Blue Beetle!Jaime Reyes is an ordinary high school student in El Paso, Texas, with a deep love for his family, culture, and home, and loves nothing more than his neighborhood’s spontaneous gatherings that go late into the night. But lately, he’s begun to realize that he and his border community are being used as pawns in an increasingly toxic immigration debate. The last few months have seen armed troops deployed along the U.S. and Mexico border, manufactured crackdowns at official border crossings, and a mounting resentment among a group of disaffected and reactionary youth.Jaime’s problems get even more complicated when he finds an odd bug-like artifact while stargazing. He starts feeling a little different—like there’s another voice in his head pushing him toward his most base instincts. And to make matters worse, he’s been having surreal dreams that show him that the true threat El Paso faces isn’t “illegal aliens” but actual aliens known as the Reach. In fact, according to his dreams, Jaime is meant to pave the way for the Reach’s impending invasion!

The Review

This was such a powerful and inspiring read. The earthy tones of the artist’s work allowed the narrative to shine brightly in this graphic novel and were a great juxtaposition to the vibrant blues associated with Blue Beetle and the cosmos as a whole. The action and the way the writer explored the origins of both Jamie Reyes and the Reach/Blue Beetle felt both fresh and original, and a significant expansion on the lore from DC Comics as a whole.

Yet at its core, this story was both socially relevant and morally impactful. The horrific actions the people of the United States are witnessing with immigration rights and the actions taken by ICE have not only dominated newswires for the last few months, but have elevated tensions and created more fear and uncertainty than ever before. This story not only touches on these fears and showcases the harm that it causes, but also shows a path of unity and commitment to a more open, heartfelt, and understanding path that celebrates our differing cultures and how much stronger our nation is together than it is torn apart. Themes of identity, social justice, and family all converge effortlessly, lending this sci-fi epic a sense of groundedness and connection to our world.

The Verdict

Thought-provoking, enduring, and compelling, author Julio Anta’s “This Land is Our Land: A Blue Beetle Story” is a must-read graphic novel. A great DC Comics graphic novel, both Anta’s writing and Jacoby Salcedo’s artwork mesh seamlessly and help tell an essential story of identity that will stay with readers long after the book ends. Death, Taxes, and Turduckens by Jens Heycke Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Jens Heycke shares the details of one of the most significant tax fraud crimes in history in the book “Death, Taxes, and Turduckens.”

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Amazon #1 Bestseller in Personal Taxes

They say nothing is certain except death and taxes… unless you’re a billionaire.

Death, Taxes, and Turduckens reveals the world’s wildest offshore tax evasion scheme, where the ultra-wealthy hide billions inside complex “Trust Turduckens.”

It tells the true story of Robert Brockman, a secretive billionaire indicted for allegedly orchestrating the largest tax fraud in history. Based on exclusive interviews with IRS and DOJ insiders, the book follows investigators as they decrypt covert messages, launch undercover stings, and take on elite legal teams in a billion-dollar showdown.

Tax evasion siphons off enough each year to buy six months of groceries for every household in America. Death, Taxes, and Turduckens not only exposes how the ultra-rich hide over $1 trillion offshore, it also offers practical steps to recover that money for American taxpayers.

The Review

To start, while math and finances have never been and never will be one of my strong points in life, true crime has always fascinated me as a subject. Even stories like those found in films like Catch Me If You Can (based on a true story) have been so engaging to me, so this novel’s premise immediately caught my eye. The author did incredible work in cataloguing and detailing the intricacies of this case, delving into court documents, investigation notes, and so much more to bring this case to life on the page.

The revelations and details that the author laid out felt like something out of a thriller, with many people connected to the case ending up either taking their own lives or passing under suspicious circumstances, and coded messages being found hidden in photographs and codenames given to lawyers in other countries who handled offshore accounts. What stood out in this book was the author’s ability to balance narrative-style writing with educational input on both financial crime investigations and legislation related to finances, with a particular focus on tax evasion. While readers need to pick up this book to get all the gritty details, the author’s work did a fantastic job of making the individuals of this case feel visceral and within reach of the reader. It informed the reader of the laws and loopholes that exist that need to be amended or fixed to prevent these crimes from persisting.

The Verdict

Thought-provoking, engaging, and insightful, author Jens Heycke’s “Death, Taxes, and Turduckens” is a must-read nonfiction actual crime book. The twists and turns in the narrative and case, and the examination of how billionaires act and manipulate finances in general, a subject that has been the cause of great debate in recent years in politics, will stay with readers long after the book’s final pages. Hammered in Iron (Crafting Humanity Book Three) by Brendan O’Meara Review

A decade into a ruthless war, an unrelenting enemy’s latest plans are discovered in author Brendan O’Meara’s “Hammered in Iron”, the third book in the Crafting Humanity series.

The Synopsis

After a decade at war the BlankZone has begun its final move to eradicate the Federation.

The Federation has fallen. James and his team have fought against the BlankZone’s assault for the last decade traveling across the country to the independent city states operating the last remnants of Federation society. For years, the war has existed as a stalemate. James and the remaining Federation soldiers have organized under NOLA, a new decentralized force based in its namesake city of New Orleans. Meanwhile, the BlankZone has used its Sentinels and inhuman soldiers to raze every city it can, leaving piles of ash in its wake.

With the war against the BlankZone in an unending cycle James and the team have split up on separate missions. As they are returning from a routine operation, James stumbles upon supplies being transported, heading towards the Federation’s desolate north. Along with his team, James makes his way towards the Federation’s destroyed northeastern cities to discover why the BlankZone is focusing their efforts in such a barren location. Join the journey to uncover the next step in the BlankZone’s plan to destroy the Federation. The world has changed drastically and James must find answers before it’s too late.

The Review

Exhilarating and thrilling, the author does an incredible job of upping the ante in this narrative while also making this more character-driven. The intense action and the detailed way the author brings to life what life is like on the front lines of a war-torn world was vivid and richly developed, and the shocking revelations that come from unexpected sources about what the BZ is doing not only to the Exils but their plans for the surviving remnants of the Federation as a whole drives the characters forward at an unpralleled pace, giving readers an intense connection to these characters.

In many ways, this novel was one of the most intimate of the entire series to date. James especially deserves a special shoutout as the protagonist, showcasing the legend that has grown over the years due to his and his team’s exploits and showing both physically and emotionally how the war has left its scars on him and his allies. The return of a hated foe leaves an even bigger scar that will shock readers, and the infusion of a potential love interest for James with a particular character will create more heart and connection that readers will be able to hold onto.

The Verdict

Memorable, heartfelt, and action-packed, author Brendan O’Meara’s “Hammered in Iron” is a must-read and entertaining dystopian action thriller. The mystery of the BZ and what they’re building, the tension that mounts as the world develops, and the rich character development will stay with readers as they eagerly await the next entry in the Crafting Humanity series. A young woman working as a maid must unravel the web of lies she is caught in to discover the identity of a murderer in author Nita Prose’s “The Maid.”

The Synopsis

In development as a major motion picture

Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by.

Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection.

But Molly’s orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what’s happening, Molly’s unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black—but will they be able to find the real killer before it’s too late?

Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different—and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.

The Review

This was such a richly developed and compelling thriller. Molly is such a unique protagonist and the instant draw of this narrative. Her candid view and open way of speaking freely about what’s on her mind, as well as the struggles she faces with conversing and understanding others in social situations, make her relatable. The harrowing experiences she encounters throughout this narrative add a special twist to the classic murder mystery narrative. The way this cast of characters comes together is fantastic, and the way Molly can find her community and group of friends to come together and face this growing conspiracy of murder makes this a thrilling narrative.

The fast-paced and tense atmosphere of this novel’s story was perfectly laid out for readers, allowing them to search high and low for their list of suspects as the mystery unfolded. The emotional backstory that unfolds as readers learn more about Molly, Giselle, and so many others not only keeps the narrative fascinating and moving but also speaks to the nature of human connection and how people connect and communicate with one another as a whole.

The Verdict

Enthralling, memorable, and thrilling, author Nita Prose’s “The Maid” is a must-read murder mystery and crime thriller. The twists and turns in the narrative will speak to fans of Only Murders in the Building and Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club, adding humor and wit to the dialogue and directness of Molly and her friends, and the intrigue of the mystery behind Mr. Black’s death will have fans on the edge of their seats for much of this narrative. The Review

What a truly insightful and engaging read. The author did an incredible job of laying out the inner struggles that a person faces, and that often prevent them from achieving the financial success they crave. The author takes a unique approach to discussing these problems; rather than using straightforward tactics and strategies, the author reveals how the deeper, more personal insecurities and self-sabotage that we often exhibit can be the cause of our own downfalls and struggles to achieve the financial freedom we crave.

What stood out to me was the way the author presented these ideas to the reader. Rather than merely coaching or preparing a strategy, the author lays out the lessons they learned from this shadow work by creating prompts and archetypes through characters that speak directly to the reader. From The Visionary and The Trickster to the Alchemist and the Shadow, these characters delve into the deepest parts of a person and their struggles, and then showcase the paths they take to achieve success directly. This creative and inventive narrative effectively conveys the lessons the author learned, keeping the reader engaged throughout.

The Verdict

Insightful, engaging, and memorable, author Alex Brent’s “The Shadow of Wealth” is a must-read blend of nonfiction inspiration, business strategies, and fictional prose and poetry. The creativity and inspirational narratives found within drive home the lessons and empowering nature of finding success that entrepreneurs, creative individuals, and coaches can utilize in their careers and journey moving forward. About the Author

My name is Alex.

By day, I work in IT, but beyond my job, I have a deep passion for Jungian psychology and writing. I love expressing my thoughts and sharing powerful insights – and nothing lights me up more than hearing how those ideas have helped others grow or shift something in their lives.

I’m especially interested in the topic of wealth. And I’ll be honest – I feel no shame about it. Wanting more, desiring abundance, and striving to live your best life is a good thing. (Even if many of us were taught to feel guilty about it.)

At one point in my journey, I realized I was on a meaningful path toward building real wealth. That’s when I felt I had something valuable to share—something honest and hard-earned about how wealth is actually created.

But just to be clear: it hasn’t come from any magic trick or overnight success. It’s been the old-fashioned way – through years of working, creating, investing, and selling. It’s taken over 15 years, and the journey is still unfolding.

And honestly?

I believe it could have happened much faster if I had met my Shadow earlier.

Once I experienced the power of shadow work firsthand, I couldn’t keep it to myself. My creative side wouldn’t let me. I felt this undeniable urge to share what I had learned—in my own way, in my own voice.

The family has been getting ready for hours as storm clouds gather and the skies turn a creepy green and gray. Despite his fear, Oliver knows they have done all they can to protect their home, property, and the animals on their small family farm. Now, it’s time to take shelter as a large funnel cloud roars across the fields towards their home.

Tornadoes can cause widespread damage, both physical and emotional. Oliver and the Twisting Tornado emphasizes thoughtful preparation, family connection, and community support, making it a timely and helpful resource for parents, grandparents, educators, and anyone teaching tornado safety and working to build resilience among young people. Oliver and the Twisting Tornado supports Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) by helping children manage storm-related anxiety, understand tornado alerts, and feel confident in taking action.

The Review

This was yet another stellar children’s read from both authors. The book continues the essential lessons and rich storytelling that the first book in this series established, crafting believable and relatable characters that both children and parents can identify with while educating young readers. The muted yet engaging illustrations by Tanya Zeinalova brought the characters and the realities of life in an area prone to tornadoes to life perfectly, keeping the reader invested in the narrative.

The calm and detailed way the authors lay out storm preparedness and showcase the emotional family and community connections at the same time was a big draw for this book. The clear and concise way the steps needed to prepare for a storm are laid out for readers help drive home the importance of being prepared for such a storm, while the way the family and the community band together in the storm’s wake is an uplifting and inspiring way to instill that sense of belonging and caring that children should have at that early an age.

The Verdict

Memorable, thoughtful, and engaging, authors Ben Jackson and Chrissy Hobbs’s “Oliver and the Twisting Tornado” is an excellent entry in the authors’ series on natural disasters and a must-read children’s book. The fast-paced story and relatability of the narrative will stay with readers, keeping them eager for more in this growing children’s series. If you haven’t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!
