The Review

In this ever-increasing technological world, the threats that we, as individuals and society as a whole, are far grander than ever imagined. The authors do an incredible job of showcasing this, exploring the world vulnerable to digital attacks. The authors play into people’s genuine fears regarding our reliance on technology, showcasing the chaos and terror that digital terror attacks on our infrastructure can have on our world.

Yet amidst all of the technothriller action, the character development and the rich imagery really made this story shine brightly. The relationships these teammates form with one another, and the mindset of the antagonists the team comes across along their journey really helped elevate the adrenaline-fueled action that the story took on.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Verdict

Memorable, compelling, and thought-provoking authors Breakfield and Burkey’s “The Enigma Wraith” is a must-read technothriller. The twists and turns in the narrative and the fantastic character development made this a thrilling novel in which to get lost. If you haven’t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!

The Review

This was a gripping and compelling read. The author does a remarkable job of capturing the tension that builds between Rowdy and Bailey and in their lives, as well as these two dangerous individuals beginning to close in on Bailey. The intense action and suspense in this book allow the reader to get lost in the narrative itself, and the author’s descriptive writing allows the setting and atmosphere to become visualized quickly by the reader.

Yet, the character development really brought this story to life. From the dark and disturbing nature of the antagonists of this book and the horrific crimes, they committed to get to this point to the emotional core of both protagonists’ stories and the heated and passionate relationship that develops along the way, giving a nice balance of romance and action for readers to get lost in.

A young woman living in a world where the past is forbidden as entities known as Headmasters control people’s bodies for manual labor shockingly discovers memories of another person rising to her mind, as secrets about how to defeat the Headmasters begins to work their way into her life in author Mark Morton’s “The Headmasters”.

Smiley Campaign

The Synopsis

How do you learn from the past if there isn’t one?

Sixty years ago, something awful happened. Something that killed everyone except the people at Blue Ring. Something that caused the Headmasters to appear. But Maple doesn’t know what is was. Because talking about the past is forbidden.

Everyone at Blue Ring has a Headmaster. They sink their sinewy coils into your skull and control you, using your body for backbreaking toil and your mind to communicate with each other. When someone dies, their Headmaster transfers to someone new. But so do the dead person’s memories, and if one of those memories surfaces in the new host’s mind, their brain breaks. That’s why talking about the past is forbidden.

Maple hates this world where the past can’t exist and the future promises only more suffering. And she hates the Headmasters for making it that way. But she doesn’t know how to fight them – until memories start to surface in her mind from someone who long ago came close to defeating the Headmasters.

But whose memories are they? Why aren’t they harming her? And how can she use them to defeat the Headmasters? Maple has to find the answers herself, unable to tell anyone what she’s experiencing or planning—not even Thorn, the young man she’s falling in love with. Thorn, who has some forbidden secrets of his own . . .

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

What a thrilling and enthralling sci-fi and dystopian YA read. The author did an incredible job of world-building here, allowing the mystery of these creatures and the fall of mankind to take hold in the reader’s mind as they are introduced to the mythos of this narrative. The Headmasters themselves are genuinely chilling, and the society they have made for themselves through humanity is disturbing and creepy, allowing the terror they represent to sink in for the reader, much like the classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers film.

Yet the character development helped make the grander sci-fi elements of the story feel alive and engaging on the page. The emotional core of Maple and Thorn’s journey together and the losses they incur over time will resonate with readers, and the visceral imagery the author brings into play will stay with readers long after the story ends, giving the protagonist a narrative that is both exhilarating and terrifying all at once.

The Verdict

Memorable, thrilling, and entertaining author Mark Morton’s “The Headmasters” is a must-read sci-fi and dystopian YA read. The emotional and engaging journey the protagonist goes on and the epic world-building mixed with the spine-chilling terror of the Headmasters made this a one-of-a-kind and a great start to the 2024 season for sci-fi and YA readers everywhere. Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was a brilliant and thrilling travel guide meets fictional storytelling tale. The use of both historical and fictional characters to explore the many facets of Guyana was remarkable to see come to life on the page. The way the author captured the voice and tone of each person in the book was highly creative and expanded upon the knowledge and information for these influential sites in Guyana. I especially felt connected to the chapters with figures such as Indiana Jones, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Blackbeard.

Yet it was the culture and history of Guyana itself that really took center stage. The figures behind these chapters helped bring special attention to the beauty, struggle, and heart of the people of Guyana, and the author’s use of imagery and powerful storytelling allowed these unique places to become alive in the reader’s mind.

The Verdict

This was the perfect travel-based book with a hint of fictional storytelling that allowed readers to become enthralled by the land of Guyana. The breathtaking imagery and atmosphere that the author develops through these characters and figures’ accounts of their experiences and the sense of wonder it creates in travelers looking to travel makes this a must-read for travel readers everywhere. BLOG TOUR: Spark and Tether by Lilian Zenzi

Spark & Tether - Lilian Zenzi

Lilian Zenzi has a new queer sci-fi romance out (nonbinary/pan/queer/gender-fluid): Spark & Tether.

Working odd jobs across the Outer Ring gets a little lonely sometimes—not everyone loves having a synchronist with supraliminal perception around. But all Sacheri wants, he tells himself, is to wander the stars.

Then he takes a salvage run to an abandoned moon where he meets the wry, reserved, strictly-by-the-rules archivist Jin. Mesmerized by their confidence and charm, Sacheri can’t resist showing off his abilities–and instead of the damaged ai he was tracking, he stumbles onto a signal left by a synchronist who went missing decades earlier.

Sacheri knows from previous experience that pursuing the truth—never mind justice—could destroy everything he loves. He would defy his employers, the institution responsible for the myconeural networks that make him a synchronist, and the leadership of several worlds.

And it would complicate his new, passionate, and impossibly sweet relationship with Jin. They might be the best thing that’s ever happened to him, but they work for the very entities that ended Sacheri’s last investigation.

He knows better than to risk it.

But he’s never been able to turn away from someone in need, and there’s a voice in the void calling for aid…

PROLOGUE

Orinus Station, present day

Sacheri woke with a shiver in his nerves tracing his limbs like a lit fuse.

His synplants drew his awareness out into the station, into the whisper of leaves and the low hum of the machines, endlessly seeking. He had no solace to offer them, so he tried to sleep through it. Maybe inebriant would douse the burn; he’d have to find one, which meant leaving bed… but then, a walk might also help. The drink could keep him company on the return.

There was a certain maudlin poetry to wandering with the ghosts of memory, anyway.

#

He regretted his choices before he could finish the first bottle.

The empty corridors echoed, even the ones with lush vine-planted walls, fully surrounded by sound-absorbent tiling. The unsteady sound of his steps reminded him of less lonely times; the chatter of more populated halls made him sad. His synplants cleansed the inebriant from his system faster than he could drink, so he diminished them, set a timer on his standard implant, and ducked into a maintenance corridor, heading for the lifts that would return him to his temp residence.

He’d forgotten how many ghosts were in his head.

He drank more.

He passed through too many familiar places, muttering curses to himself about the council for bringing him to Orinus Station in the first place. He should have departed with Paradis, gone away to her fancy little moon, where he could wallow in heartbreak on a lakeside beach while she teased him about his lack of ambition. She’d have been careful not to remind him of anything—anyone—else.

Three more nights until he left for Elysia, into the far reaches of the Outer Rings, away from the myriad reminders, the constant calling of what should have been, all of his aching regrets.

He avoided the halls that would have taken him past Paradis’s private suites and the memories lying in wait for him there, and then he wandered past the next set of lifts, because it was what he and Jin had always done: long walks and quiet talks, so close their shoulders touched, their bell-clear, mesmerizing voice low and loving. He tried not to think about how much he missed them, and, failing that, tried not to think at all.

He trudged along, hugging the shadows at the edges of the walkways, arms heavy at his sides, until it was late enough that he could reasonably hope to get a lift to himself, and he had some hope of sleeping. The only humans he’d passed in maintenance took no notice of him, which was the whole point of using the back ways. But they might make small talk if they found him alone in a lift car, or, stars forbid, they might ask if he was okay.

And then what was he supposed to do? Cry on them? Tell them to mind their own business? Explain how he helped bring something like justice to a few long-forgotten synchronists and how much it took from him? Or should he ask if they’d seen a certain lithe, black-haired investigator for the Council of the Outer Rings anywhere nearby? His eyes burned from both the inebriant and the exhaustion and the constant threat of tears. He wanted to sleep until the transport to Elysia was ready.

The bottle was empty, but he wasn’t ready to let it go; he thought he might sleep better with it nearby, just for company, even if the synplants wiped all traces of the inebriant from his system. He leaned against the rounded corner of the lift alcove, one heel against the wall to hold him steady, arms crossed over his chest, bottle dangling loosely from the fingers of his right hand.

His luck almost held.

EXCERPT

Sacheri looked back at the dancers and found Jin had been watching him from the bar on the other side of the floor; once Adda was out of sight, they returned to the table with a fresh drink in hand. Sacheri liked their eyes on him, and didn’t want to interrupt it, and thought it had maybe become a game to see which of them would speak first. And so they ended up staring at each other from across the table for a good long moment before Sacheri broke it with a fresh grin.

He’d never been that good at games. “I don’t think I’m your first synchronist, am I?”

Jin’s answer was a quiet chuckle, clear and rich and magnetic as the rest of them, but they held his gaze without a trace of self-consciousness. Their eyes were flecked with amber and citrine, a starburst in the warm brown.

Uh-oh, Sacheri thought. Everything about them was charming, even if he would never understand their obvious dedication to rule-following. Again, like a kid with his first crush. He wasn’t sure if he should be preening or posturing or pleading for another wink, another whisper, any vague hint of interest.

“I don’t flirt on runs,” Jin said finally, in a tone like a caress— so soft and intimate that it raised the hairs on Sacheri’s arms and neck. They looked away from him. “It stays entirely professional until the job is complete and in the archives.”

There it was. Sacheri nodded, more pained than he wished to admit.

Jin glanced out at the dance floor before turning back to him. “I just wanted to be clear about that. And that you shouldn’t be discouraged.”

The disappointed pang in his chest flipped immediately to fizzing. He could not read them, he realized; he got it wrong, every time, even unguarded as they were, and that was somehow as magnetic as all the rest. He held Jin’s eyes and gave them a sly smile. “I appreciate that,” he said.

Umair reappeared at the end of the table between them. “Your friends from earlier are requesting another dance,” he said to Sacheri.

“Umair will drag you out there if you try to refuse,” Jin said, lifting their liquor to take a slow sip.

“And what are you going to do?” Sacheri asked, with a grin that held just enough dare to be serious.

Jin’s answering smile was slow and deliberate. “I’ll watch.”

Sacheri laughed as Umair beckoned for him to come out to the floor.

“See you in the morning, then,” they said.

A dozen suggestive responses rose in Sacheri’s throat, but he swallowed them all. “See you in the morning.”

He sent one more ping to Paradis: Found a good team. Made some friends. One more run before I take a rest.

Isn’t She Great: Writers on Women-Led Comedies from 9 to 5 to Booksmart Edited by Elizabeth Teets Review

A collection of essays help shape the impact that cinema’s greatest female-led comedies have had in the book “Isn’t She Great: Writers on Women-Led Comedies from 9 to 5 to Booksmart”.

Beauty Awards 2022

The Synopsis

A love letter to women-led comedies.

Based on Elizabeth Teets’s program series called “Isn’t She Great” at the Hollywood Theater, this anthology is a collection of the most beloved female-centric comedies and the audiences who adore them. From 9 to 5 to Romy and Michelle to the iconic Elle Woods, the essays in this collection build on our devotion to these films and continue the conversation around funny women and how these characters have shaped so many talented writers.

As Elizabeth Teets reminds us, there is a specific power in a funny woman. A woman who dares to laugh at the world and at herself. These movies made us strong and smart and sexy (and bend and snap a lot). At the end of the day, we remind ourselves when the world only tries to let us have a little, a little money, a little confidence, a little joy to go out and get the whole enchilada.

Isn’t She Great is for anyone who loves movies and feels the glamour in pink. Cult cinema and film criticism will never be the same.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was an insightful and powerful read. The honesty and relatability that each writer exuded in their essay were refreshing to read, and the detail that went into bringing each film’s story to the forefront was great to read, as it helped illustrate the power of the message each film brought to life amid all the humor and wit.

Yet the impact on the writers themselves made this book shine. The way the authors were able to incorporate events and memories of their own lives and how they related to the films they spoke of made this a much more in-depth and heartfelt read. In particular, one essay that stood out was Michelle Theil’s “I Wanted to Bring it On,” an essay on the film Bring it On and its significance to her and so many other young women and people of color in general, which felt so compelling and engaging as a reader to get lost in.

The Verdict

Heartfelt, compelling, and engaging, “Isn’t She Great” is a mustered collection of essays on female-driven comedy films and their significance in these writers’ lives. The thoughtful approach to these films and the detailed way the films played out balance out the raw, emotional, and even humorous moments of these writer’s lives that made these films feel so impactful. Welcome to Bill Hemmig’s Americana, a collection of snapshots that capture the everyday American experience. From filling the bird feeder to a realtor conference (behind) the happiest place on Earth to the picturesque canals of Venice, each story celebrates the eccentricities hidden inside the fabric of an ordinary life.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

From a storytelling perspective, the author’s work put into this book’s character development and imagery was riveting. The relatability and heart that these characters exuded and the rich dynamics between them were incredibly engaging. The thoughtful use of imagery helped elevate the enthralling yet thought-provoking atmosphere the author had tapped into for these stories.

Yet it was the balance of realism and almost fantasy-style storytelling that the author embraced that made this collection so unique. The way each story spoke to everyday situations and emotions that people go through, and yet the abstract imagery that made each story feel like another world entirely came across as a fairy-tale-like parable to take lessons from, and the idea that life itself stems from our thoughts and ideas made this a complex yet engaging read.

The Verdict

Memorable, thoughtful, and engaging author Bill Hemmig’s “Americana: Stories” is a must-read short story collection that is not to be missed. The author writes in a way that allows us to see ourselves in these characters, yet the story’s abstract nature allows us to feel transported all at once. A young woman seeking redemption utilizes the power and language of flowers to help others in author Myriana Merkovic’s “The Garden of Mercy”.

The Synopsis

The Garden of Mercy is a heart-rending coming-of-age novel about families lost and found, belonging, and finding meaning in places where fragrances stay.

If you knew the secret powers of flowers, would you use their spells to change lives?

Mercy knows humans aren’t the only beings capable of emotions and acts of compassion; flowers can also feel and do good deeds. And there are sweet-scented killers for those who won’t be saved. Mercy knows them all intimately.

Raised by a Bible-thumping mother and shunned by her peers for her peculiarity, she finds refuge in the neighboring woodlands, where she learns the secret language of flowers and the power of plants. As she grows, so does her curiosity, sense of smell, and use of the flowers’ skills to solve quandaries: Aster for patience, borage for courage, dandelion for anger…. But everything changes the day she gathers the wicked purple flower and considers the unthinkable…

Now a young woman, Mercy finds she isn’t alone in struggling with the wounds of her past; the quirky residents of a dilapidated Victorian mansion where she works are, too. Yearning for redemption—theirs and hers—she conjures a miraculous garden where scents mend broken hearts. As the flowers come to life, healing begins for all but one, leaving Mercy with an impossible dilemma. How far is she willing to go this time? How much is she willing to risk? What he asks of her isn’t a small feat; she could lose it all: a family found, a place where she belongs, love….

Enchanting and searingly honest, The Garden of Mercy will make you look at the world differently and question your beliefs about everything.

Grand Slam New York

The Review

This was an absolutely moving and heartfelt read. The way the author can draw upon the unique and wonderful world of flowers and their inherent power in the world and the use of powerful imagery in the author’s writing allowed the flowers and the fantastic character development to become very cinematic in quality on the page.

The theme surrounding this story of life, death, and the love connection between them both was so well represented in this narrative, not only in the protagonist’s journey in her past and present but also in the complexity of the flowers themselves, from the unassuming flowers that heal to the deadly yet beautiful flowers that kill. The growth and change that the protagonists underwent throughout their journey kept the reader invested in the story.

The Verdict

Heartfelt, memorable, and thoughtful, author Myriana Merkovic’s “The Garden of Mercy” is a must-read coming-of-age tale, filled with mystery, tension, and notes of hope that helps showcase the power of found family and the lengths we are willing to go to keep that family intact. The Review

This was a compelling and captivating read. The author did a fantastic job of world-building, crafting a narrative that is both detailed and imaginative all at once. The haunting imagery the author captures not only highlights the fantasy genre so perfectly but also brings a cinematic flair that keeps the action and adventure elements of the story fresh and alive on the page.

The character development was astounding in this story. The balance between Niena’s struggles as the weight of not one but several worlds hangs on her shoulders and the sense of destiny and hope that Rein exudes as he explores the elements of harmony that the themes play on kept these two protagonists highly engaging to the reader. The concept of vibrations and music overall impacting a world and the universal language we all speak made the fantasy and action elements explode off the page.
