Author Kim Idynne showcases 13 tales of terror that will chill you to the core in the book “To the Solemn Graves”.

The Synopsis

Feeling shunned in their new neighborhood, a family attributes the cold attitude of the neighbors to prejudice—but a little investigation unearths a more shocking motive. A conniving widower finds a new wife through a foreign dating service, but the bride turns out to know him much more intimately than he imagined. A young man enlists a shaman to exorcise a terrifying spirit from his apartment, and as he learns more about the supposed ghost, he begins to form a strange and tender bond with her. To the Solemn Graves presents thirteen stories that, while laced with the supernatural, remind us that most horror comes from the all too natural.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was a compelling, heartfelt collection of short stories. The author did a fantastic job of finding the balance between the spine-chilling terror of each story and rich character development that brought a more grounded sense of storytelling to the book. Each story’s haunting imagery allows the reader to feel transported into the narrative entirely.

The heart of this narrative is in the powerful themes the author explores in this book, as each story elevates far beyond the classic horror genre. Each story reveals the horrors that arise from everyday life, the complex relationships we have with those we love, and the chilling reality of our perceptions of those who are different than us. The social and emotional consequences the author explores help bring the terrifying moments to new levels in the narrative.

The twists and turns in the narrative, the terrifying horror moments, and the complex yet engaging character dynamics all brought to mind the intriguing stories told by writer and director Mike Flannigan. She prefers to slip under the radar, but when she is plucked from her ordinary suburban life and placed into a galactic military boarding school, Celeste must squash her own insecurities and find her true purpose. Does she have the strength to hone her powers to fight for the preservation of all galaxies, or will time run out for those she loves and for countless others?

This is the first book in a series.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was a captivating and adventurous read. The author does a great job crafting a wholly original sci-fi epic that is visually stunning and written compellingly. The rich mythology and backstory the author developed with the looming threat to the galaxies at play and the graphic novel’s unique illustration style helped capture the narrative’s larger-than-life status.

The heart of this story resonated with the character development and the powerful theme of destiny. The way Celeste was developed made the reader feel like they were represented in the narrative, as she finds herself transported to this whole other world and galaxy and away from the life she knew. Her connection to this universe and the developing nature of her role in this coming battle made the reader feel invested, and the themes at play in the story allowed the reader to feel the sense of destiny that Celeste exudes in this story.

Memorable, engaging, and thrilling, author Morgan Middleton’s “Asteria: The Legend of the Fallen Star: Book One” is a must-read action and adventure meets sci-fi graphic novel/manga. Guest Blog Post: Writing Historical Fiction by Margarita Barresi, Author of “A Delicate Marriage”

Writing Historical Fiction

There’s nothing like getting lost in a good historical fiction tale. When done right, historical fiction transports us to a past time and lets us imagine ourselves living there. History provides the framework for the story, but the book should not read like a history text. Rather it should be a wonderful story that happens to take place during another time and perhaps teaches something new about that time.

To be effective, historical fiction must be accurate. Nothing takes a reader out of a story like an anachronism or citing a wrong fact. For example, Henry VIII wouldn’t say “okay”, because the word did not exist during his time. Or a character in a pre-World War II novel would refer to World War I only as “The Great War”, never World War I.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

When I set out to write “A Delicate Marriage”, historical fiction set in Puerto Rico during the 1930s to ‘50s, I was determined to get it right. Here are some lessons about writing 20th century historical fiction I learned along the way.

  1. Absorb as much as you can about the history of the time. Start with an overview and then drill down into specific events.
  2. Use primary sources whenever possible—letters, speeches, books written by the characters you are portraying, photos taken during the time.
  3. Newspapers and magazines bring facts to life and humanize the players. Ads are a font of information for question like what people wore or how much renting an apartment cost.
  4. If you can’t find the information you’re looking for in a book or online, contact an expert in that field. Academics and archivists are generally happy to help. For example, when researching my book, I consulted a Puerto Rican food historian and a historian for the El Yunque Rain Forest, among others.
  5. If you can’t verify a fact, leave it out. Even after consulting a Puerto Rican movie history expert, I could not confirm whether Puerto Rican theaters served popcorn in the 1930s, so my characters do not eat popcorn on their movie date.
  6. Bring history alive through the details—names of restaurants, books people were reading, popular songs, types of cars, the latest washing machine technology.
  7. You don’t have to include every historic event in detail. Pick and choose those that best serve the story and summarize others.
  8. First decide on the story you want to tell and then weave in the history. An agent critiqued an early draft of my manuscript, telling me “I would have liked to see the story and the historical details woven together a bit more seamlessly. Ideally, the reader will feel like we’re reading a love story within the historical context, instead of a love story with specific details about Puerto Rico during that time.” You bet I fixed that!
  9. Research is fun, but you need to know when to stop digging and when to start writing. Other writers advised me not to worry about the small details during the first draft, like what the character is wearing or what song is playing. You can add those later.
  10. Don’t have too rigid of an outline. Sometimes my research led the story in a new direction. For example, when I read about the opening gala for the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, I knew I had to set a scene during that party.

So why not try your hand at historical fiction? Pick an era that fascinates you and see what stories you can concoct. Spend time in 17th century France, Cleopatra’s Egypt, or even the Ice Age. And learn a little something along the way.

About the Book

From glittering ballrooms to verdant mountains to poverty-stricken slums, A Delicate Marriage takes the reader on a vivid tour of Puerto Rico forty years after becoming a U.S. colony, a time of great change and political turmoil on the island.

Isabela, a wealthy woman, sacrifices her artistic aspirations to marry Marco, a penniless man dedicated to improving conditions on the island. As the island’s insular government enacts pro-U.S. policies, Marco builds a real estate empire while struggling to maintain his populist principles. Meanwhile, Isabela feels unfulfilled in her traditional role as a wife and mother and becomes disillusioned with Marco’s shifting moral compass. She begins to identify with anti-U.S. factions, leading a dangerous double life that puts her family in peril.

As political violence threatens their paradise, Isabela and Marco question whether their marriage, like the island’s relationship with the U.S., should continue. Margarita Barresi’s debut novel celebrates Puerto Rican culture while delving into themes of class, oppression, and the effects of colonialism through the lens of a marriage.

The Days That Followed by Hailey Gosack Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Four people forced to survive a world in which our technology has been stripped away discover what kind of survivor they are in the book “The Days That Followed” by Hailey Gosack.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Almost everyone is caught off guard by a complete technological blackout that sends society into a tailspin. Your greatest enemy is now your neighbor as you fight to feed your family. Four characters, each with unique circumstances, struggle to survive in this page-turning apocalyptic novel that dips and turns until their fates intertwine.

T.L. Payne and William Forstchen fans will appreciate this new twist on an EMP thriller.

On August 25 at 3:11 p.m., our modern way of life comes to a screeching halt when two nuclear bombs are detonated in the atmosphere hundreds of miles above Utah and Ohio. The blast’s Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) wipes out most electronics for 95% of the country’s population. Cell phones, vehicles, and other forms of technology produced after 1974 are rendered useless. Without the delivery of food, pharmaceuticals, and other supplies, resources soon become scarce, causing an all-out war among the people. Looting and violence are rampant as law and order cease to exist.

Carrie is a beautiful, ambitious young professional visiting Salt Lake City from Philadelphia to pitch a business proposal to the executives at the corporate branch. After the EMP destroys her chances of getting home, she must figure out how to survive alone in an unfamiliar city with very few possessions.

Bodin is an angry teenager who dreams of emancipation while living with his stepdad, mom, and three-year-old stepsister Evie in Salt Lake City. But after the EMP strike, he finds himself trapped and forced to participate in the family life he shunned. He begins to appreciate his family just as the fight for resources among the city inhabitants heats up. Now, he’ll do anything to protect them, but will it be enough?

Sarah is an ICU nurse working at a hospital in Salt Lake when the EMP strikes, and much of the hospital’s equipment is rendered useless. As she works hard to save her patients, she must also contend with her own survival odds. Sarah has recently been diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer.

Sam is a retired Rancher living out his days in the small town of Stanley, ID. Sam has an advantage. Not only is he well-versed in what it takes to live off the land, but he was also warned to prepare for survival before the blackout. But Sam has it far from easy. Sam has been tasked with the seemingly impossible.

The characters are faced with an intriguing question that continues to unfold: is help coming, or is there something more sinister at play for the citizens of the United States?

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

For so many people, the need to explore a post-apocalyptic or dystopian setting often involves supernatural or sci-fi elements, like zombies or killer robots. However, the genuinely thought-provoking and haunting tales often come from stories of human survival in a man-made apocalypse. The author did a fantastic job of crafting a narrative that felt original and chilling. The haunting nature of what mankind can do to one another, as well as what it can do to survive and help those around us, was perfectly captured in this story.

The heart of this narrative rests on the complex character development of the four main characters. The way the author captured such distinct and unique voices in these characters from all walks of life and still held onto the desperation and engaging survival lessons that these characters must learn to live in this new world made this a memorable read. The detailed imagery and the emotional core of these character’s experiences made this a harrowing reading journey.

The Verdict

Compelling, entertaining, and thrilling, author Hailey Gosack’s “The Days That Followed” is a must-read EMP apocalyptic thriller. The twists and turns in each of these characters’ journeys and the dynamics explored within these characters as their lives are turned upside down make this a remarkable story. The Synopsis

What happens when a snarky kid drags his no-tech parents kicking and screaming into the 21st century? He writes a book about it!

This whiz kid can handle every new piece of technology out there but he’s unable to teach his Mom and Dad to use email, social media, Zoom calls, voice mail, social media, smartphones, and streaming music.

Mom is baffled by low-fat, fat-free, and two percent milk; she asks, “What’s in the other 98 percent?” Dad refuses to use GPS. He says, “Great, now I have two women telling me how to drive.”

If you like wisecracking humor about a kid and his clueless parents, you’ll love this laugh-out-loud quick read! Illustrated with hilarious photo-cartoons, Mom & Dad Are Dinosaurs! will bring the funny to your whole family.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was the perfect little book of humor. The author did a fantastic job of developing a narrative within the context of the book that highlighted the themes of technology and our relationship to it. The hilarious nature of the author’s observations throughout this book balances well with the charming character development of the narrator, “Mom and Dad.”

Yet the relatability of the author’s work made this book shine. We all have that one relative who struggles with technology, whether it is a cell phone or a streaming service on their television. The abruptness of the narrator’s observations and the cluelessness of the parents and their actions really elevated the humor in this book.

The Verdict

Witty, engaging, and thoughtful author Frank Mastropolo’s “Mom & Dad are Dinosaurs!” Is a must-read humor book. The charm and relatability of the author’s work and how this book speaks to readers this holiday season make this the perfect book for the humorist in your family. This was quite an imaginative and engaging read. The author’s ability to balance out the creative storytelling aspect of the narrative with the themes of adventure, friendship, and family all in one was incredible to see come to life on the page. The infusion of fantasy elements brought the whimsy and adventure elements to life perfectly on the page.

Excerpt

Prologue

The Kraken Club

The Kuntilanak’s name was Indah, at least, it was in the strip club. Her long, black hair wrapped like a shroud around her body as she circled the pole. When her hair coiled past her shoulders, it revealed the nail sticking out of the back of her neck, thick as a child’s fist, the color of rust and blood. Black rope was tied around her legs, cuffing them to the soles of the boots she wore as heels. A tall and thin man, a fairy, with willow-emerald skin and eyes the color of lotus leaves, held out a wad of dollar bills. He placed them at her feet.

“Smile,” he told her.

She did, baring her fangs.

The fairy grinned. “Ah.” He traced his thumb against those fangs, still grinning as she sank them into skin that tasted of rotting leaves and nectar. The fangs retracted when he didn’t flinch. “Like a vampire.”

Indah laughed, bending over to pocket the bills in one smooth movement. “The vampires wish they were Kuntilanak like me.”

###

As soon as she pressed the bills to the glittering zipup pouch at her thigh, they disappeared. The fairy waggled his long, thin fingers. “Alakazam.” He chuckled even though this wasn’t a laughing matter. Being of fairy blood, he couldn’t care less.

“Fae magic doesn’t feed me. Money does. So, if you’re not willing to pay with real cash, then get out.”

She spat at his eye, praying he went blind. “Setan.”

She moved toward the bathroom, taking the long way around so she wouldn’t run into the handsy Ljósálfar manning the bar with his light-blond hair and translucent skin. He thought he was handsome, and he took many a mortal woman to bed, but his overconfidence turned the Kuntilanak girl off him.

Overconfidence just made you all the more of an asshole, and she knew his type. Pelle was just another elf acting as a handler in this gods-forsaken place.

She slammed into the bathroom and took the sink covered in the least amount of glitter and wadded tissue paper. She splashed under her armpits and near her groin, counting the feeble bills she’d collected in the first hour of the night.

The blue bathroom door swung lazily open behind her, screeching against tile. “Fuck off, Pelle!” She screamed it out, hoping she could scare him off.

Instead, it was the green fairy. He stood in front of her with his legs splayed wide, his eyes focused on her face.

“You again? I’m not for free.” She raised her middle finger, water trickling down the sides of her face. Smelling a sweet-smoky mix of nail polish and cigarettes in the back.

No reaction. His eyes stayed focused on her face. “Hello? Fairy dude, you doing all right?”

His neck bent backward then slammed forward again. Something splintered: wood, blood, and bone.

“They’re coming,” he said. “The ones who see all.” Then he struck.

Writing WAKE THE DEAD by Sophie Mutiara Whittemore

What inspired you to write this particular story? What were the challenges in bringing it to life?

Wake the Dead is the sequel to Catch Lili Too. Overall, the Gamin Immortals series was inspired by an idea I had questioning how a siren would navigate being asexual. As a queer, nonbinary person on the ace spectrum—I knew this story was one I wanted to explore. As for challenges in bringing this story to life, I’d suppose one of my biggest challenges was fighting self-doubt. Especially whether the story I was writing was “too much”—though I suppose another way to reframe that is just by saying the story is quite camp. And you can never have too much camp!

What secondary character would you like to explore more? Tell me about them.

Stace. I love Stace in Wake the Dead. They’re a botanist who met their boyfriend (Jason, the Midwestern jock necromancer) in a boxing ring in NYC. They’ve got tattoos of vines and plants all over themselves and can identify a poisonous toxin in a second. Yes, I gush about them a lot in my book. But frankly, they’re who I aspire to be every day. They also have a pet battle boar named Wilbur as their sidekick. And the book has a running gag that every monster thinks they’re also a monster too—when they just have  a plethora of cool body mods. Let me have my nonbinary comic-book-esque wish fulfillment!

Who has been your favorite character to write and why?

Lili. I sincerely have grown to love Lili as my own comfort character. Snarky. Cynical. Jaded, but a big softie with her monster cohort friends. I wrote her during the midst of a deep depression—when every day felt like forever. I think Lili ended up feeling quite similarly. She’s an immortal who’s lived thousands of years. She’s quite literally lived forever, and she battles depression because of it. Even someone who’s seen empires rise and fall can also battle difficult periods of mental health. I like writing characters who are vulnerable like that. They’re real.

What was the weirdest thing you had to Google for your story?

Not weird, but quite cool, honestly. As a plant nerd myself (hello inspiration for Stace), the Fae leave a calling card of poisonous plants. This led me down a rabbit hole of researching various poison gardens in the world. And yes, you can pass out simply by passing through the gates of some of these poison gardens! Magical, huh? (And slightly terrifying).

Let’s talk to your characters for a minute – what’s it like to work for such a demanding writer?

Hello there! I’m Patty. I’m the owner of the Sweeney Inn. My twin is Jason Sweeney, the jock. Ahem, yes, well. You didn’t think you’d meet me, would you? Especially with the author gushing so much about Lili and Stace. Honestly, it’s quite exhausting being the voice of reason in this book. One would think being a mortal necromancer would be a volatile profession, but honestly, it’s a lot of babysitting other, much more volatile monsters.

What’s your core motivation in this book?

Please don’t tease me for this. But, potentially, it would be to save Gamin… and the very cute newcomer Indah, from the grips of the Fae crime lords running a racket in town. They seem to think Indah murdered one of their princes or something—but I know she’s innocent! Indah is a Kuntilanak, an Indonesian vampiric figure in mythology who hides in trees and rips apart men. She’s quite beautiful, in her true form and her glamour. I want to save everyone in the town, of course. It just so happens that everyone also includes the beautiful Indah!

Are you happy with where your writer left you at the end? (don’t give us any spoilers).

Is there ever really an end to these books? Let me just say this: I’m sure what goes around, comes around. And I’m sure I’ll be coming back around to finding more trouble in Gamin soon!

The Review

The author did a truly unique and powerful job of capturing the heart of imposter syndrome. The way the author approaches this subject is what sets this book apart, as not only does the author appeal to those who suffer from this in a professional setting, but speaks from a more personal perspective. The author doesn’t approach the topic from a mental health professional perspective, but rather from someone who has lived this struggle and seeks to help others through lessons she learned herself.

The way the author breaks down imposter syndrome overall, as well as the guided steps that she took to overcome this, made this book so compelling. The author not only lays out 5 key steps to take when confronting imposter syndrome but looks to conquer a fear of failure and build the self-confidence a person needs in order to face this syndrome.

The Verdict

Authentic, honest, and engaging, author Anne Galloway’s “Conquering Imposter Syndrome” is a must-read nonfiction book and guide on facing our doubts and gaining the tools needed to overcome the imposter syndrome many people face in their lives. Whether it was calling upon famous people who have dealt with this syndrome or it was the honest writing style the author employed, this quickly became a must-read for anyone struggling with this. A woman swept into a powerful affair discovers a sinister fate at play in author Giancarlo Roversi’s “Marlenh”, a Pulstar Prequel.

The Synopsis

Marlenh is about to make the biggest mistake of her life …

She lives in the chaotic nation of Astralvia, but she has a wealthy husband who adores her and pleases her in every way so she can enjoy a privileged life. Still, Marlenh starts an online flirtation with Rickhard Frey, an enigmatic successful politician who seems to be the perfect man. Soon, she falls for his charms.

Thus, Marlenh embarks on an intense affair with Rick, which spirals out of control and becomes something seedy, something insane.

When Marlenh makes a crucial decision in her life, she discovers a horrifying truth about Rick that could destroy her and her family.

Now Marlenh must confront Rick and his entire macabre world. She must also discover why he orchestrated this sinister destiny for her—a fate she has to overcome somehow, even if it seems impossible.

Marlenh is a thriller brimming with sex, lies, mystery, and suspense. The saga begins thirty years before the events of Pulstar I – The Swan Barely Remembers, the first book in the Pulstar trilogy. Read Marlenh as a stand-alone novel while listening to its official soundtrack, composed for piano by the author.

The Review

This was a provocative and thrilling read. The author does an amazing job of world-building and capturing both the heat of the affair between the protagonist and Rick, while also showcasing the depths of the mystery and shadowy work at play behind the scenes that the protagonist stumbles across.

The heart of this narrative rests in the rich chemistry of the characters and their dynamics with one another. One thing that stood out to me was how Marlenh’s actions led to the breakdown of several relationships, and strained others in the process. The infusion of the author’s fictional world and the twists and turns that bring this story into that narrative really work well here, and the emotional weight of the protagonist’s journey made this book all the more worthwhile.

The Verdict

Shocking, thrilling, and engaging, author Giancarlo Roversi’s “Marlenh”, is a steamy thriller you won’t be able to put down. The balance of sci-fi and character-driven narrative, as well as the dynamic mythos the author fleshes out in this prequel, will keep readers enthralled and ready for the next entry in this series. About the Author

Venezuela-born Giancarlo Roversi isn’t only a writer. He’s also a computer engineer and a musician who shared stages with artists such as REM, Oasis, Travis, Duran Duran, and Maroon Five.

When his band Fractaler broke up in 2011, he devoted the next ten years to cue the Pulstar Trilogy and three prequels in that universe.

He surrendered his personal life and wrote these manuscripts in his native language, Spanish, and then he translated them into English. He also composed a soundtrack for each book; they’re currently in production.

When he’s not living and breathing in his Pulstarverse, he loves family time, cooking, astronomy, animals, and having philosophical discussions—especially about the meaning of life—with anyone who cares to join him.
