On Request Magazine Comic-Con 2014 Highlights

Each year, we here at On Request Magazine like to highlight the best to come out of the annual Comic Con convention out of San Diego, CA. This year is no different, and we have quite a few great tidbits to talk about this year.

1) Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice revealed a small teaser for fans at the Warner Bros panel at Comic Con this year, showcasing Ben Affleck as Batman, wearing some sort of power armor and standing atop a rooftop in Gotham on a stormy night. Batman switches on the bat signal, and as he does, the light reflects off of a floating Superman, glaring at Batman with his eyes glowing red. Batman’s eyes glow white, and the two stare one another down, until the footage cuts to black. The scene is very reminiscent of the classic story, The Dark Knight Returns, and is sure to promise one of the biggest moments in both Comic Book and Film history. Also on display for the convention, panel, and the public was the first look at Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, and while director Zach Snyder has confirmed he has yet to film any scenes of Gadot as Wonder Woman and that she is still working out to build her muscle tone, the picture shown gave fans a great glimpse at the Amazon warrior we are sure to see in the film, and although the color scheme is a bit darker in tone than expected, don’t be surprised if either during the course of the film or towards the time Justice League comes out, the costume gets  bit more color to match the more classic blue and red costume from the comics.

2) Marvel’s annual Hall H panel produced quite a few tidbits. While footage is yet to be revealed to the public and won’t be for quite some time, fans were given a glimpse at Ant-Man and Avengers: Age of Ultron. It was announced that Evangeline Lilly would be playing Hope Van Dyne and Corey Stoll would be playing Yellowjacket, the main antagonist in the film Ant-Man. The cast was at hand to reassure fans and give a short glimpse into the films future, which showcased Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang using the Ant-Man suit to break into Pym’s company on behalf of Pym, in order to retrieve the suit designs taken from Yellowjacket during a hostile takeover of his company.

The biggest reveals came during the Avengers panel, where everyone except Scarlett Johansson was in attendance to showcase some new footage from the film. The footage showed the common humor that goes into a Marvel film, with a group of Avengers trying to lift Thor’s hammer, before Ultron arrives in one of Iron Man’s broken down suits, claiming that the only way to save humanity was to wipe it out completely. The footage showed a haunting scene that seemed to depict Iron Man, kneeling by Captain America’s broken shield and the rest of the Avengers lying dead all around him. The scene was haunting, and seems like death is coming for some of our favorite heroes.

Two big announcements came from the panel as well. The first was confirmation that Josh Brolin would indeed be playing the master villain behind the scenes, Thanos. The actor showed up wearing Thano’s Infinity Gauntlet and playing to the crowd with the Avengers in front of him. The second announcement came afterwards, when it was announced that Guardians of the Galaxy would be getting a sequel before it even opened in theaters, with the second film set for 2017. Not surprising given the amazing numbers coming in for it’s opening weekend.

3) The big winners from Comic Con TV came from DC, who not only announced that Arrow’s third season would feature heroes Ray Palmer, a.k.a. The Atom, Katana, and Wildcat, but that the main villain of the season would be none other than ancient master assassin Rha’s Al Ghul, the leader of the League of Assassins. Also shown was new DC shows Gotham, which will focus on the years before Bruce Wayne became Batman, with a young Jim Gordon navigating Gotham as a homicide detective and the cities future villains paving their own origins. Also included was The Flash, which will showcased on of DC’s biggest superheroes and a Justice League founding member, and Constantine, DC’s first foray into their supernatural storyline and characters.

4) Also in attendance were the last panels and showings of shows like True Blood and Sons of Anarchy, which are currently or going to air their final seasons this year. True Blood previewed a bloody path towards their finale, while Sons of Anarchy promised a bloody path of vengeance for lead character Jax. For those of you who haven’t seen the last season’s finale, go watch it and see why he’s out for revenge, but know that the final season is sure to include the death of most of our favorite characters, and no one is safe, not even Jax himself.

Comic con was full of amazing trailers, pictures, previews, reviews, cosplay, hello’s and goodbyes. For more on the annual event, check out our website and this blog to see everything we covered during the event!

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opens up the Warner Bros. panel on Day 3 with a teaser of the titular heroes squaring off on a rooftop in Gotham. Batman is wearing armor much in the same style as the comics, The Dark Knight Returns, and uses the Bat Signal to highlight a floating Superman, whose eyes are glowing red.

To premiere this short teaser, stars Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and Henry Cavill joined director Zach Snyder to showcase the new footage, along with the above picture which showcases the intense and amazing new Wonder Woman, ready for battle on a war torn landscape and wielding a large sword. These teasers, though short and lacking any sort of plot points, goes a long way to showcase the amazing direction DC is taking their films and bringing together these heroes on the big screen for the first time in their history. So far, the casting of these three actors as DC’s biggest heroes is nothing short of perfection, and we cannot wait to see what else we are shown in the years between now and its release in 2016.

On Request Magazine’s First Impressions: E3 2014 Day 1

Looking to capitalize on the release of the next generation of consoles released in the last year, the gaming industry held it’s breath as it waited to see what was in store from the leading brands on Day 1 of E3 2014. As always, fans and industry experts alike were not disappointed. For once, each company had a solid performance during their exhibits and presentations, and in the first day many were given a glimpse into the future of gaming. Here were some of the standouts from Day 1.

1) Sunset Overdrive: From Insomniac Games, the creators of Ratchet and Clank, comes a brand new whacky game filled with the same level of humor, action, and destruction we’ve all come to know and love. During Microsoft’s presentation, we were all given a look into the spectacular world of Sunset Overdrive. Filled with insane new weapons, a city torn by warring factions and monstrous mutants, and a foul-mouthed yet loveable hero who specializes in kicking ass and having a boastful personality, this game looks like a breakout hit for Insomniac Games, and is something fans should watch out for in the near future.

2) Assassins Creed Unity was one of Ubisoft’s biggest hits at E3. Showcasing multiplayer, Co-Op, and Single player gameplay along with a new trailer, the game focused on the new setting, the French Revolution. The bloody war in France was depicted perfectly in the trailer, and the updated engine, gameplay mechanics and stunning visuals made it one of our top games of E3 on day 1.

3) Batman: Arkham Knight: Although delayed until 2015, Batman made his presence known at E3 this year, showcasing some amazing gameplay footage that revealed the destruction of Gotham, a hint at some of the powerful forces of the mysterious Arkham Knight and his army, the return of villains such as Penguin and Scarecrow, and the most amazing part of the presentation, the new Batmobile gameplay, where you can drive along the streets of Gotham, use the vehicle as a car or a tank, and then can instantly eject Batman out of the car, sending him flying over the Gotham skies. The footage was amazing, and with the extra time given to the release of the game, one can only imagine the powerful mechanics yet to be shown in this game.

4) Avenged Sevenfold Developing an indie game titled Hail to the King: Deathbat. The game will feature artwork, songs, and more from the band itself. The game is funded by the band, and is an indie game in every sense of the word. Exploring a world where you must fight for control of your land, the game seems to show that a band can make a bad ass game just as well as any big developer.

5) The Order: 1866 showcased some amazing gameplay footage, in which you traversed some sort of asylum or hospital, and came across a hellish creature you had to fight off, or just survive. While the trailer was only a few minutes, viewers were given a glimpse into the non-stop action, with no big stops between the cinematic experience and the actual gameplay, each woven seamlessly into the game into complete cohesion.

6) Dead Island 2: A new trailer showcased the return of the bloody and haunting world of Dead Island. Showcasing a widespread infection that may or may not have reached mainland, the game showed a beach town of sorts, sort of like Santa Monica CA, and the chaos that ensued from a zombie plague hitting the beach and it’s residents. Bringing to mind the sudden chaos of films such as 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead, this sequel looks to continue the exciting zombie adventure from the previous games.

On Request Magazine Week in Review

1) On top of the casting of Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlett Witch, Aaron Taylor Johnson as Quicksilver, James Spader as Ultron, and Thomas Kretschmann as Baron Von Strucker, Iron Man actor Paul Bettany, known as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S., the computer A.I. of Iron Man, is now tapped to become The Vision. In the comics, the Vision is an android created by Ultron to destroy the Avengers. It’ll be interesting to see how this will play out on screen.

2) Shameless had a stellar and heartbreaking week. While Fiona’s personal relationship struggles came to a head, Lip searched for his missing brother Ian, and Frank continued his struggle to get a liver transport with his eldest daughter. Amazing acting as always from Emmy Rossum and William H Macy.

3) The CW has renewed a slew of shows early, including Arrow, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, Reign, and The Originals.

4) Fox has started casting for their batman prequel show Gotham, which will follow Detective James Gordon and a young Bruce Wayne. Ben McKenzie will play Gordon, while Donal Logue will play Detective Harvey Bullock, and Robin Taylor will play Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin.

On Request Magazine’s Weekly Roundup (February 5th, 2014)

1. Lex Luthor and Alfred cast: This week it came to light that Warner Bros. cast Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor in the much anticipated Man of Steel Sequel. Controversy struck at the news that this young actor would be playing the role of Superman’s most iconic villain, and many fans are worried about the future of DC films. While many cannot see the young actor playing a powerful and intelligent billionaire villain, we here at On Request Magazine are holding onto hope that Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. know what they are doing, and hope to see images, behind the scenes, or video of the actor soon. The film also cast legendary actor Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s butler/companion. The film also stars Henry Cavil as Superman, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Gal Godot as Wonder Woman, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, and Diane Lane as Martha Kent.

2. Shows to review: Arrow, Supernatural, New Girl, Justified, American Horror Story Coven, House of Lies:

A) Arrow showcased it’s wonderful storytelling ability while mixing in action and adventure as Oliver tried to train Roy into honing his anger and new abilities into something good rather than evil. In the end, one major character found out Oliver’s secret, while another spiraled way out of control.

B) Supernatural found the brothers Sam and Dean’s relationship slowly dwindling away as Sam still held onto the anger he felt at Dean manipulating him into letting the angel Gadriel possessing him. Sam and Dean worked a case, but afterwards Sam said he’d only work with Dean if they stopped being brothers, and instead focused on hunting. Dean meanwhile was given the mark of Cain, as in the biblical Cain, who was made into the first demon by Lucifer. The mark will allow Dean to wield a weapon that can kill ancient demons such as Abbadon.

C) New Girl saw the romance between Nick and Jess blossom even further, with assistance from Prince and Adam Brody. Prince helped Jess get over her fear of revealing how much she loves Nick, while Adam Brody, who played Jess’s ex who still loved her while remaining friends, helped Nick admit the real reason he broke up with his ex Caroline, which was because he fell in love with Jess the moment they met.

D) Justified saw Raylan hunting down an informant that was giving the law false information about Boyd Crowder’s illegal activities. The informant was killed by Dewey Crowe after his cousin, the leader of the Crowe family, played by Michael Rappaport, gave him orders to. The crime in Harlan County is brewing, and a war between Boyd and the Crowe family is imminent.

E) American Horror Story Coven wrapped up its season by revealing the next supreme. After a series of grueling tests that saw three of the witches die, (and one come back), it was revealed that Cordelia, Fiona’s blind daughter, was the next Supreme, and took the reigns of the coven and went on national tv to reveal the nature of witches so that more girls would come forward and get the help they needed. The on screen chemistry between Sarah Paulson and Jessica Lange this season was phenomenal, and we cannot wait for the next season to begin.

F) House of Lies has returned as a powerhouse dramedy for Showtime, and in it’s third season, Don Cheadle’s Marty Kaan is no longer the top dog, but rather tied with the strong, female leader of Jeannie, played by Kristen Bell. Bell’s character has grown in this third season, and has showcased she can be just as ruthless and power hungry as Marty.

3. Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea Episode 2 releases March 25th: The game will put you into the role of Elizabeth, giving you full control of the powerful woman as you stealthy navigate through the underwater city of Rapture to save a young girl.

4. Band spotlight: The Rare: This hard rock band located in the high desert of Southern California is a real treasure, showcasing the passion and intensity of rock and roll, as well as the amazing story that a song can tell. Look for these up and comers to make an impact on the music scene in 2014.

5. RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman: A tragic end to one of the greatest actors of our time, Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his apartment last Sunday. While the official cause of death is unknown, bags of heroin and needles were found on his person and in the apartment, and arrests of drug dealers are being made in connection with his death. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, loved ones, and the community at large.
