A boy and his family explore how to prepare and face the dangers of a tornado in authors Chrissy Hobbs and Ben Jackson’s “Oliver and the Twisting Tornado”, the second book in the Navigating Natural Disasters book series.

The Synopsis

“It’s time to go to the shelter. Now!” As their radio buzzes a tornado warning and sirens wail in the distance, Oliver, his sister Emma, and their parents move quickly to find shelter from an approaching tornado.

The family has been getting ready for hours as storm clouds gather and the skies turn a creepy green and gray. Despite his fear, Oliver knows they have done all they can to protect their home, property, and the animals on their small family farm. Now, it’s time to take shelter as a large funnel cloud roars across the fields towards their home.

Oliver is afraid that his home could be blown away. He’s concerned that everything he knows and loves could be damaged or destroyed by the rampaging storm. When his parents tell him it’s time to evacuate to their emergency storm shelter, Max wonders if his world will ever feel safe again.

Oliver and the Twisting Tornado explores the natural fears of a child facing a life-changing storm that can hit with little or no warning. Tornadoes can cause widespread damage, both physical and emotional. As Max and his family, friends, and neighbors come together, they show us the power of community working together in the face of a major natural disaster.

Oliver and the Twisting Tornado emphasizes thoughtful preparation, family connection, and community support, making it a timely and helpful resource for parents, grandparents, educators, and anyone teaching tornado safety and working to build resilience among young people. Oliver and the Twisting Tornado supports Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) by helping children manage storm-related anxiety, understand tornado alerts, and feel confident in taking action.

The Review

This was yet another stellar children’s read from both authors. The book continues the essential lessons and rich storytelling that the first book in this series established, crafting believable and relatable characters that both children and parents can identify with while educating young readers. The muted yet engaging illustrations by Tanya Zeinalova brought the characters and the realities of life in an area prone to tornadoes to life perfectly, keeping the reader invested in the narrative.

The calm and detailed way the authors lay out storm preparedness and showcase the emotional family and community connections at the same time was a big draw for this book. The clear and concise way the steps needed to prepare for a storm are laid out for readers help drive home the importance of being prepared for such a storm, while the way the family and the community band together in the storm’s wake is an uplifting and inspiring way to instill that sense of belonging and caring that children should have at that early an age.

The Verdict

Memorable, thoughtful, and engaging, authors Ben Jackson and Chrissy Hobbs’s “Oliver and the Twisting Tornado” is an excellent entry in the authors’ series on natural disasters and a must-read children’s book. The fast-paced story and relatability of the narrative will stay with readers, keeping them eager for more in this growing children’s series. If you haven’t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!

The Review

This was equal parts educational and engaging. The authors did an excellent job of crafting a narrative that felt realistic and informative while also providing illustrations with rich tones and powerful images that spoke volumes about the nature of hurricanes and life in towns within a hurricane’s path.

What stood out about the book was how relatable the characters were to readers and the balance the authors struck in the terrifying reality of storms such as hurricanes and the essential things in life. While the fear that can come with dealing with powerful storms like the one found in this book is very relatable, the struggle with the destruction and loss of property is equally relatable, and not without its merits. However, the authors do a great job of showing how important it is to remember that no matter how devastating property loss can be, keeping our families safe is far more important than things, a lesson that younger children could easily adapt to now.

The Review

What a fun and heartfelt read. The authors did a fantastic job capturing the story and the characters that made the first book so relatable while providing new challenges that reflect the problems many people face in their youth, especially when juggling real life with athletics. The realistic descriptions and imagery in the author’s writing style were memorable and vividly ingrained the reader in these characters’ lives.

Much like book one, the second book in the series perfectly balanced rich and dynamic character development with personal themes that many readers can relate to. The themes of friendship, teamwork, and finding balance were well represented, and the characters were memorable and relatable. The entrepreneurial spirit that the protagonist and her friends showed in their new pet-friendly business and the struggles with acceptance and even early relationships with others in school will be something so many readers will respond to favorably.

Not one little bit. When it came time to migrate south for the winter, Trevor couldn’t go. He was stuck in Canada all by himself. Alone. Until it started to get warmer, and all his friends returned from their journey. However, this year would be different.

The Review

This was a fantastic and well-illustrated children’s book. The beautiful animation style of the art itself brought the warmth and emotional core of the story and Trevor as a character to life perfectly. The fast-paced story and the engaging narrative will bring children and parents together perfectly.

The authors did a phenomenal job of bringing a heartfelt story to life, playing on the themes of loneliness and facing adversity considerably through Trevor as both a character and his story. The way Trevor fights to overcome his fear of flight and the unexpected obstacles that land in his path to make him stumble on his path showcases the strength and courage he had to face those adversities and strive to be better, making this an inspiring children’s tale.

Matcha Green Tea by Purlisse

The Review

Yet another compelling and enthralling children’s book read from this dynamic author duo. The authors do an incredible job of giving each character their own moment to shine, and the cool illustrations help highlight both the coldness of the ice rink and the cool nature of ghosts and the supernatural as a whole.

To me, the heart of this narrative rested on the overall theme of being true to oneself and to finding our passions in life. The story is great for both parents and kids alike, as it shows children how to stay true to themselves while allowing parents who may not already subscribe to the idea that giving their children room to grow and find their passions in life is the best way to see them thrive.

The Verdict

Memorable, heartfelt, and entertaining, authors Ben Jackson and Sam Lawrence’s “Ghosts Can’t Play Hockey” is a must-read children’s book and a truly creative tale. The focus on not only Bruce and his dream of hockey, but his relationship with his father as well made this such a well-told story that readers won’t be able to stay away from for long. The Review

This was an engaging and memorable novel for young readers. The fast pace of the narrative and the rich dynamics the author establishes between the protagonist and the other characters, both her parents and the young women on this softball team, all come together quite beautifully. The detail the authors put into the sport itself and the rich imagery in the author’s writing style really brought this narrative to life so wonderfully.

The heart of this story rested in the incredible character development and the heartfelt themes the authors established in this book. The themes of friendship, community, hard work, and determination all could be felt in this story, and the way the authors were able to get into the mindset of this young protagonist and capture the nerves and the anxiety that goes into making new friends and fighting for a spot on a team really captured the connectivity that a book like this needs for young readers.

The Verdict

Memorable, thoughtful, and entertaining, authors Ben Jackson and Sam Lawrence’s “Softball Strikeout: The New Girl” is a fantastic book for children and young readers everywhere. The close look at team sports and the balance of competitiveness and community within team sports mirrored protagonist Olivia’s struggles and personal motivations quite well, making this one book kids will not be able to put down. Interview with Ben Jackson

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

When did you decide you wanted to be an author?
Hmmm. I didn’t decide to become an author until later in my life. I have always had an interest in reading and can read books extremely quickly. Sometimes too quickly! Often, I’ll go back and read through books I’ve enjoyed 2-3 times. I started writing when I was about 30. Lately, I have moved more towards children’s books. They’re heaps of fun to write, and I love the whole process from writing to publishing.

What inspired you to write this book?
My latest books are The Day My Fart Followed Me To Soccer, The Day My Fart Followed Me To The Dentist, and The Day My Fart Followed Me To The Zoo. They are books 4,5, and 6 in the My Little Fart series. My wife and I try to find ideas for books that parents and children could relate to and help them. The Day My Fart Followed Me To The Zoo has facts about animals, but also tries to throw in a few jokes and laughs along the way.

What drew you into the Children’s Book genre of writing?
I love just writing and having fun. I try to make my children’s books not only fun but also educational. They all try to pass along a message. About looking after your teeth and not being scared of the dentist, to participating as part of a team and helping out your friends.

What social media site has been the most influential to you as far as growing your audience is concerned?
I would have to say blogs. Blogs and other authors who support indie authors just like this site! I think that websites and indie author bloggers help to promote good indie books more than Facebook, Twitter or Instagram ever could.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers out there?
Don’t give up and don’t try to do it alone. Being indie is great, but it’s still important to invest some money or time into your books. They say never judge a book by its cover, but with so many books being published every day, invest some money into your cover. Format your books, have them proofread and put the best possible product out there every time.

What does the future hold in store for you? Any new writing projects on the horizon?
No, we have some ideas for more books, but we just released The Day My Fart Followed Me To The Zoo this week! I’m also writing for an indie book magazine, Indie Authors Monthly! It’s free to download every week and a great resource for all authors.

If I Was A Caterpillar by Ben Jackson, Sam Lawrence and Danko Herrera Review

From the creators of the hit children’s book franchise Timmy and the Little Fart comes a brand new children’s book that tells the story of chasing dreams and believing in yourself. That story is If I Was A Caterpillar by Ben Jackson, Sam Lawrence and Danko Herrera, and here is the synopsis:

Read along with the caterpillar as it travels around the world trying exciting new activities and having fun! Reading with children is one of the biggest forms of early education, helping to develop young minds.
As a young child, it’s important to believe that anything is possible. If I Was A Caterpillar is a beautifully illustrated children’s book that follows a caterpillar on its journey as it discovers new activities.

Too often these days, children are being put onto tracks that are unachievable or told that a dream is just a dream and to forget about it. One of the most enjoyable things about being a young child is believing that you can fly to the moon as an astronaut or dive under the water searching for hidden treasure.

If I Was A Caterpillar shows young children that you can do anything you want. Your dreams can come true! If you enjoy reading books with beautiful illustrations and love having your child read along with you, then make sure you check out If I Was A Caterpillar!

This wonderfully written and illustrated children’s book helps reinforce the age old idea for children that they can be anything they want to be. No dream is too big, and if you work hard you can achieve said dreams. The artwork was bright and warm to see, and watching the story unfold will surely help children take the message of the story to heart.

Overall this is another strong children’s book from these incredible writers. Full of heart, warmth and a message all children deserve to learn, this is a story parents will adore reading to their children for years to come.
