The Synopsis

Bound by love, separated by a tragic mistake; can two Indigenous women realize their happy ending?

Long ago, in an age of mysticism, Walks with Spirits, a two-spirit woman, perceives voices whispering on the wind and they empower her with the gift of calling animals. But who she truly wishes to call to her side is her childhood friend, Laughing Brook.

Daughter of a shaman and an herbalist-midwife, Laughing Brook holds a prominent place in her society and bears the responsibilities it entails. She is training to be a healer like her mother, but her most compelling desire is to spend her life with Walks with Spirits.

When a misunderstanding crushes their dreams of happiness, both women must learn to face the trials that await them in a land where danger lurks behind every tree and honor means more than life. Will the spirits intervene on their behalf, or are they fated never to manifest their visions of love?

Walks with Spirits is a historical fantasy set in an ancient time. Packed with Native American themes, heart-touching imagery, and an epic love story, Walks with Spirits will immerse you in an inspiring view of life.

The Review

This was a truly beautiful story. The authorโ€™s ability to balance the heartfelt LGBTQ romance of this novel with the culture and history of the Indigenous people of the North American continent was superb, and the added elements of fantasy-driven narrative based upon the mythos and belief systems of the Indigenous people added both depths to the cast of characters and a fantastic amount of world-building.

The heart of this narrative fell to the two amazing protagonists and one of the strongest LGBTQ romances Iโ€™ve read this year so far, Walks with Spirits and Laughing Brook. The tension and pain these two women deal with as Laughing Brook is forced to marry a man she doesnโ€™t love, and Walks with Spirits have to hold back her love in order to be a friend to Laughing Brooks through the years, was so emotional to behold. What I loved was the marriage of the mysticism and cultural importance of nature and its relationship to the universe as a whole with the LGBTQ themes and what true love means was amazing to read and see come to life on the page.

The Verdict

Heartfelt, engaging, and thought-provoking, author Edale Laneโ€™s โ€œWalks with Spiritsโ€ is a must-read novel of 2022! The amazing LGBTQ themes found in the narrative, from the two protagonistsโ€™ enduring love story to the dual-gender identity Walking with Spirits shared and how it related to her having both her soul and the soul of another dwelling within her in this fantasy world was so moving to read, and the juxtaposition of the modern-day conflicts many people still endure when confronted with sexual identity struggles and the impact it has on oneโ€™s life and family against the historical and cultural setting of the narrative made this a remarkable story. If you havenโ€™t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!

Walks with Spirits Meme

From Chapter Two of Walks with Spirits

A movement at the front door drew Brookโ€™s attention and in an instant her face lit up and her heart swelled. A tall woman wearing menโ€™s clothing strode in, her head held high, and the energy in the chamber danced. Even Thunder Warrior did not seem so dull.

โ€œThat is Walks with Spirits,โ€ he said with a gesture. โ€œShe is an odd woman of Nutaula who is coming on the hunt with us tomorrow. The Old Ones and shaman speak of her like she is special, but she canโ€™t do anything that I canโ€™t do. I feel uncomfortable around people of two spirits, donโ€™t you?โ€

Brookโ€™s smile had become a glow. โ€œThat is my Mepoose, my best friend. We grew up together in this house before she moved to your village.โ€

Thunder Warrior shifted positions and pushed back his free-flowing long hair. โ€œI mean, she is well respected among our community. We are taught it is a blessing from the Creator to be born with two spirits,โ€ he fidgeted. โ€œIt is merely something I donโ€™t understand.โ€

Brook wrenched her gaze from Spirits long enough to study her male guest, a bemused expression on her face. When she said nothing, he continued to explain himself.

โ€œI am a physical man,โ€ he said with a tap to his muscled chest, โ€œwho lives in a physical world. I do not put my trust in spirits and legends. My spear, my bow, and the strength of my arm protect me from danger. Many men say one is well served to steer clear of spirits, lest you offend one. They say she talks to them every day.โ€

As Brook returned her oval eyes to follow Spirits across the room, her heartbeat raced and she sensed a tingle running through her being. โ€œShe does,โ€ she affirmed.

She watched Spirits approach the hearth closest to the door where she stopped beside the spot where an old man with a cane sat on a cedar box up close to the fire, a beaver fur cape wrapped around his shoulders. He had deep lines in his leathery face, long gray hair bound by a plain leather band, and one leg stretched out awkwardly to catch the heat. Since Thunder Warrior had stopped talking, she could overhear their exchange.

โ€œIt is good to see you, Growling Bear,โ€ Spirits greeted.

He spared her a glance and grunted. โ€œIs it, now? If it were so, maybe you would come around more often.โ€ He pulled his cape tighter and stared into the flames with a sour look on his etched face.

โ€œYou know I moved to be with my relatives in Nutaula,โ€ she replied pleasantly. โ€œBut all morning I have been praying to the spirits that you will help me out.โ€

This time he raised suspicious eyes to her, hooded under scrunched brows. โ€œIs that so?โ€

โ€œIt is. You see, I have been so blessed with good fortune that I have caught more game than I know what to do with. I am hoping you can take these two rabbits off my hands.โ€ She extended the better pair toward him.

Growling Bear scowled and lowered his gaze to hands as gnarled as thick, aged vines. โ€œWhat do I want with those scrawny, worthless rabbits?โ€

Spirits shrugged. โ€œSee, the thing is, I can only offer you the meat. I need the skins for a project Iโ€™m working on, so Iโ€™d have to skin them before I give them to you. I know they are rather puny, but they are fresh and there is only you to eat them.โ€ She let out a disappointed sigh. โ€œIf you donโ€™t take them, Iโ€™ll have to toss them to the village dogs, and they may fight over them. I hate it when the dogs fight over food, butโ€ฆ I simply have too much fresh game to keep them.โ€

Thunder Warrior spun to Brook in outrage. โ€œWhat is he talking about? Those are fat, fine rabbits. Why is that grouchy old man so ungrateful? He does nothing but sit about and complain. When I am chief, I will not allow anyone like him to live in my longhouse. How can Black Bear tolerate him?โ€

Brook waited a moment to answer him as she listened to Growling Bearโ€™s reply.

He shifted on his box and rubbed a hand across his knee. โ€œI suppose I could take them if it is going to cause you distress for me to refuse. Maybe Falling Rain can throw them in a pot with some vegetables.โ€

Spirits smiled. โ€œI will bring them back in a few minutes when I have skinned and cleaned them. Many thanks to you, Growling Bear. You have done me a great service.โ€

โ€œI do not understand that woman!โ€ Thunder Warrior declared. โ€œHe insults her and she thanks him.โ€

Brook turned to her guest while Spirits made her way slowly around the plank-house greeting everyone. โ€œDo you not know who that old man is?โ€

โ€œA leach who lives off the charity of others,โ€ he stated in derision.

โ€œNo.โ€ Brook explained in gentle and compassionate tones. โ€œGrowling Bear was once a great hunter. He feared neither man nor beast. He brought in scores of fish and killed five bears along with countless deer, elk, beaver, and other game. When he married, a reunion was held in his honor and he was Worthy and esteemed.โ€

โ€œWhat happened to him then?โ€ Thunder Warrior considered her words with reserved curiosity.

โ€œOne falling leaves time, long before I was born, he was on a hunting party in the mountains and they must have wandered too close to where the sasquatch lived. A sasquatch hurled a boulder that started a landslide on the mountain and Growling Bear was caught up in it. When the dust settled, the others found him near the bottom under a pile of rocks. They made a litter and rushed him back to Paupeck for the healer and shaman to help.โ€ In an aside, Brook added, โ€œThis was before Black Bear and Rainbow held those titles, but who knows if they could have done better. The healer straightened and set his leg with splints, but it was broken in many places. He was very fortunate to have lived through the ordeal at all.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s your name?โ€

I didnโ€™t know whether to answer the stranger or not. We seemed to both be in jail, yet I had no idea why. He wore well-tailored clothes on his tall, thin frame, so other than looking like he could use a good meal or two, he appeared refined.

โ€œWhat are we doing in here?โ€ I said.

โ€œAh, yes. That is the question. Youโ€™ll figure it out in time.โ€

We stared at each other between the thick metal bars. Me annoyed. Him amused.

โ€œIolite. My name is Iolite.โ€

โ€œReally? Another one named for a stone? Your parents certainly lacked imagination, didnโ€™t they?โ€

I said nothing. Iโ€™d learned long ago that engaging in meaningful conversation with the people in these dreams was pointless. I avoided it.

I already knew Iโ€™d meet this man eventually. If my previous dreams were any indication, heโ€™d look the way he did here but heโ€™d speak for himself, not echo my thoughts. We might find ourselves in jail when it happened, but more likely it would just feel like a jail to me. Iโ€™d probably meet him at a time when I felt confined by circumstances. Sadly, my dreams conveyed more about my future emotions than they did about any future reality, making their information hard to use.

โ€œIโ€™ve had enough of this,โ€ I said to him. โ€œIโ€™m going to wake up.โ€

He shrugged. โ€œSuit yourself.โ€ Then he chuckled. โ€œSee you around.โ€

He kept laughing at his own witticism until he went into a fit of coughing and I woke up grateful to be in my small cot. Many of the girls at the school shared rooms with others, but I was allowed to sleep alone. At times like this, it was a blessing.

I pulled the blankets closer around my body trying to stay warm, thinking I didnโ€™t mind the physical oddities life thrust upon me when it made me a frundle. Okay, my short stature was sometimes a nuisance but I rather liked my silver hair. I found my purple eyes attractive, too, though plenty of others averted their gaze rather than look into them. I always wondered what they feared.

My dreams, however, did present an actual problem. They had started a year ago, and happened more often now, leaving me wide awake in the middle of the night filled with questions. I kept both the dreams and the questions to myself. I knew people didnโ€™t mind frundles, as long as they stayed in the background and caused no trouble.

The only troublesome ones were the ones who had the dreams. Or worse yet, the dreams and episodes.

But I wasnโ€™t that kind. Not yet. Not as far as anyone knew.

Because Iโ€™d never had a single episode. For you can hide the dreams, but there is no way to hide that.

Anticipated Angel Meme 2

Still damp and dripping under the tunic and breeches heโ€™d dragged over his desperately aroused body, breathless and panting from pounding through the jungle after his frenzied best friend, Ben Nero stood on the step outside Dexโ€™s dormitory cabin and glared at the locked door.

Dex never locked his door. Theyโ€™d been coming and going from each otherโ€™s dorms day and night for three summers straight.

Sure, Dex was arrogant, aggressive, pigheaded, surly, introverted, hypercompetitive, a compulsive overachiever. The golden boy at leadersโ€™ camp. In other words, a typical Mogadon.

Nero had hated him on sight. Until everything changed.

Since the night Dex waded into battle to defend him, Nero had been secretly crushing on the guy.

Nowโ€”this summerโ€”their final summer when they both gained their majority and left leadersโ€™ camp behind forever, the sexual dynamic between them had torqued so much tighter. Their unspoken chemistry had condensed into an alchemical compound so volatile it was practically pyrophoric. With Dex grown into something between a deadly predator and a tawny god, Nero knew his secret summer crush stood in acute danger of developing into a connection fathoms deeper.

And far more lethal to his guarded heart.

But given Dexโ€™s inherited battery of hang-ups and all that sexual baggage his best friend was carting around, the state of his heart was one secret Nero fully intended to keep.

Until tonight. Catโ€™s out of the cave now. Of all the possible, gods-cursed times for Dex to show up for a late-night showerโ€ฆ

For at least the twentieth time, he cursed his own rotten timing. Wryly he admitted the inferno of heat glowing in his chest and scorching his face had less to do with exertion than sheer embarrassment.

No use pretending it didnโ€™t happen. Dex has been pushing me away all summer. What he just saw me doing while I moaned his name will probably finish the job and end our friendship for good.

Especially with their rival planets poised on the brink of war. Nero huffed out a breath harsh with frustration.

The next time I encounter Dex Draven after summer camp will probably be in deep space at the wrong end of a solar cannon.

Grimly Nero jabbed a finger at the entry buttonโ€”for the third farking time. The chime caroled away like his whole world wasnโ€™t imploding around him. Beyond that door, his psychic senses whispered, Dex was pacing his cabinโ€™s spartan confines, wearing a path in the silica floor.

Staring at his own locked door, heart slamming against his sternum like a meteor bombardment. If he didnโ€™t open itโ€ฆif he didnโ€™t answerโ€ฆ

Nero shoved a mental barrier between them to give the guy a little privacy as a basic matter of telepath ethics. Same way heโ€™d been doing all summer. Fighting like hell to do the decent thing and respect his best friendโ€™s boundaries and stay out of his head.

Now he scowled at the stubborn silence but held tight to his temper.

โ€œDex?โ€ He pitched his voice to carry. โ€œLet me in. We need to talk. Anyway, you, uh, left your blaster in the shower house.โ€

The silence stretched between them. A silence tighter than a pressurized airlock, shredded by the shrill scream of a hunting panther. Intuition told him the critter was on the prowl, hunting for blood and savage with hunger. If the cat tracked him to Dexโ€™s doorstep, Nero would have to defend himself. Not with Dexโ€™s blaster, which heโ€™d buckled around his own hips, but with the psi fire he was learning to channel as he honed his rapidly expanding arsenal of psychic powers.

Doggedly he pounded on the door. โ€œCome on, Dex. I know youโ€™re in there. I could feel you fulminating halfway down the path. Open up.โ€

โ€œNo bloody talking. Iโ€™m not in the mood.โ€ Dexโ€™s muffled voice sounded surly. And more than a little desperate. โ€œFor godsโ€™ sake, Ben, itโ€™s after midnight. Go away.โ€

Nero squared his shoulders and hardened his voice. โ€œOpen this door or Iโ€™ll open it for you.โ€

Violet sparks flared at his fingertips. Fiercely he reeled in the billowing surge of psi fire sizzling through his channels before he lost control and blew Dexโ€™s door through the opposite wall. Tonight he wanted to talk to Dex, not fight him. And a full-out assault would only trigger all those primitive Mogadon instincts Dex was always striving to suppress.

Apparently some god with a fondness for bisexual adolescent telepaths decided to take pity on Neroโ€™s awkward dilemma and whisper a word of reason in Dexโ€™s ear. With a chirp, the maglock released and the door swung wide.

โ€œFinally.โ€ Pushing out a breath, Nero strode into the moonlit darkness. โ€œWhat the hells, Dexโ€ฆโ€

His words stuttered to a stop.

In the narrow confines of the shadowy cabin whose angles and corners he knew by heart, Dex stood silhouetted against the viewport. Wearing nothing but an insubstantial pair of sleeping trousers that clung to his supple hips and spectacular ass.

The light of Paragonโ€™s three moons limned his broad shoulders and corded back and bulging triceps in a way that made Nero burn to sink his teeth in and just nibble his way down the guyโ€™s body. Starlight flamed in Dexโ€™s cropped golden hair and caressed the sun-bronzed skin Nero longed to trace with his tongue.

Nero sucked in a hit of oxygen to clear his damn head and felt his senses spin. He was already half-drunk on lotus pollen, a seductive sweetness like spicy sugar tickling the back of his throat. Now his head was reeling with the potent kick of Dexโ€™s scentโ€”that heady whiff of pheromones Mogadon males exuded that telegraphed aggression, territoriality, or arousal.

Nero ached to know which of those stimuli was driving Dex tonight.

Ferociously he fought back the temptation to shove aside his inconvenient ethics, peek inside Dexโ€™s brain, and find out for himself. And screw his farking ethics and screw his best friendโ€™s privacy.

Interview with Judy Croomeย

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

I was born in Zimbabwe and now live in South Africa. I could never find my working niche, but the one constant in my life was my love of reading. From when I was a teenager, Iโ€™d always wanted to write but lacked confidence and discipline. In my late-30s I decided to finally write! My first novel took ten arduous years, but once I wrote The End, I knew I was doing what I wanted to do.

What inspired you to write your book?

The fear and panic that swept the world when the covid pandemic began made me consider that the modern generation has such mental, emotional and spiritual pressure in a world that is so uncertain and dangerous. I wanted to explore how the pandemic deepened these challenges.

What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

To inspire the belief that, no matter how bleak or dark life seems, the human spirit can face โ€”and overcome โ€” anything if we hold onto hope.

What drew you into this particular genre?

Poetry became my primary genre by accident. Like most authors, with ever-increasing daily demands on my time, I constantly struggled to find long periods of unfractured time to write. Wanting to write every day to keep my creative juices flowing, I discovered that I could write a poem a day until I had enough for a whole volume.

What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

Leaving book reviews on Goodreads. Keeping active on Facebook and Twitter.

What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Write every day โ€“once youโ€™ve started a new writing project, never miss a day of writing even if you only write 100 words a day.

Be authentic. Try to avoid writing what you think will sell, what people say you must write. Whether youโ€™re writing an entertaining genre novel or a literary masterpiece, leave your soul on the page.

What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

Currently working on a collection of short stories, predominantly magical realism, although some of the stories have no magical realism element. Barring any unforeseen delays (like writerโ€™s block!) that book should hit the shelves in the South African summer 2022. After that Iโ€™m toying with the idea of another volume of poetry before tackling a long-held dream of mine โ€“ a trilogy of novels starting with the Anglo-Boer War, then the South African Border War and the final book will be set in post-1994 democratic South Africa.

COVER REVEAL: Anticipated Angel by Laura Navarre

Anticipated Angel - Laura Navarre

Laura Navarre has a new erotic MM sci-fi romance coming out in April – Anticipated Angel (Prequel to the Astral Heat Romance) – and we have the cover reveal. And there’s a giveaway!

On an alien world that crucifies men for prohibited desires, two boyhood best friends risk the ultimate punishment to explore a forbidden passion.

Nero: Heโ€™s the most intimidating guy at our intergalactic next-gen leadersโ€™ camp, and his psycho galactic tyrant of a dad has a crucifixion fetish. Our two races are deadly enemies, but Dex was my boyhood best friend. Suddenly this summer, heโ€™s all grown upโ€”and suddenly he canโ€™t seem to stop staring at me. I donโ€™t know whether to be afraid that itโ€™s all a figment of my telepathic imaginationโ€ฆor that every dangerous desire weโ€™re forbidden to acknowledge is searingly real.

Dex: Iโ€™m one combat-to-the-death away from the imperial command Iโ€™ve devoted my life to achieve. All I need to do is keep my dick in my pants. Besides, Ben Neroโ€™s my oathsworn brother. Not to mention the most gorgeous, most maddeningly unattainable, most sought-after guy at leaders’ camp. Thereโ€™s no way heโ€™d ever look twice at a buttoned-tight, hyper-competitive, compulsive overachiever like me.

Until the night I blundered in on Nero in the shower. Which was a total catastrophic mistake. Because now Iโ€™ve seen what he looks like nakedโ€ฆnow Iโ€™ve heard the way he sounds when heโ€™s moaning my nameโ€ฆhow in blazes do I keep him at armsโ€™ length? Because my father crucifies men for loving men.

Which means letting Ben Nero in close, the way Iโ€™m burning to do, means risking the ultimate punishment.

For both of us.

Anticipated Angel is a steamy, angsty, friends-to-lovers MM new adult sci fi romance novella and the standalone prequel to the award-winning Astral Heat Romance Series.

Anticipated Angel meme

Flotsam Banner

Talis descended toward the sparkling layer of trash below her feet. Generations of detritus, coated in frost, shifted slowly and caught the light. She hung in open skies, a tiny dark figure on an impossibly thin thread. Her airship, Wind Sabre, lurked in the shadow of a small island above her like the hoarbeasts that lurked in the garbage below. Around her, the shrapnel of Peridotโ€™s tectonic crust peppered the skies, tiny islands not big enough to park a chair on.

She might have said the chance to do something reckless like this was half the reason she was in her line of work. But there was no one to bluff except her crew on the other end of the commโ€”Dug, Tisker, and Sophieโ€”and she owed them more than words. She owed them a job that didnโ€™t end up costing more than it paid. She owed them a ship that wasnโ€™t in constant want of repairs. She owed them a ship worthy of being called a home.

A soft click sounded in the comm of her helmet, and Dugโ€™s voice cut through the quiet sounds of her rapid heartbeat and quick breaths. The voice tube transmission made him sound small and far away. โ€œProgressing well, captain. How much farther do you need?โ€

Talis unclenched her jaw to answer. โ€œIโ€™d guess Iโ€™m just about halfway down. Canโ€™t make out any details yet.โ€

โ€œUnderstood. There is plenty of length on the winch.โ€ Her first mateโ€™s voice was low and even, though his syllables were tight as a guitar string. Dug was worried.

The bulky descent suit didnโ€™t make it any easier to see the view below her. It was a one-size-fits-all antique, big enough to wear over her clothes. Big enough that Dug, who towered above her and was thick with muscleโ€”could have worn it, if he was so worried. It was designed to keep her body heat in, and it was most definitely doing that. The musty wool lining felt moist after the short time sheโ€™d had it on. Her breath fogged the glass dome that protected her from the thin air, even though she wore a scarf over her mouth. Yet her fingers were still getting stiff with the cold. She could have worn thicker gloves if she was just going down to strap up a large object to tow out. But this time her quarry was smaller than that, and thinner gloves provided better dexterity.

From this distance, the garbage below her looked deceptively beautiful. A lazy flow of icy shapes caught the green light from Nexus, and their reflected light sparkled through the fogging on her helmet. It wasnโ€™t hard to imagine why there were so many stories about treasure down below.

And there was treasure down there. Or, reckless or not, she wouldnโ€™t be dropping into it. The flotsam layer was where the dead went to be forgotten. Dead people. Dead ships. Dead technologies. Gravity trapped it all there. Kept it from dropping out of Peridotโ€™s atmosphere on the bottom side and drifting off into the stars. Silus Cutter created the hoarbeasts centuries ago to prowl the frozen wreckage and clean things up a bit with their vicious, crunching jaws and fang-lined throats. Did her god intend for those beasts to prefer the frozen flesh of bodies to the wrecks? She wouldnโ€™t ask if she got the chance; she was here for the latter and glad to have the chance.

If things went wrong, Talis would be on the menu, too. But the contract for this salvage made it worth the risk. She could make a lot of overdue repairs on Wind Sabre with the payoff. Her crew had been enthusiastic about the operation when she proposed it, knowing what kind of money a salvage might bring in. Better than the transport jobs sheโ€™d scrounged up of late. Not one of the trio had volunteered to make the descent, though.

โ€œYouโ€™re the reckless one, Cap,โ€ Tisker told her at the time. The cheeky helmsman got away with the comment. He always did. His crooked, infectious grin and sparkling, deceptively innocent eyes transformed every gibe into a morale boost.

Details emerged, just a couple lengths below Talis. Large shapes at first. Broken hulls of ships tangled in their own lift canvasses. A roof, a wagon. An old tree trunk. Anything organic or burnable should have been composted or used for fuel, not pitched over island edge. But those hadnโ€™t always been the rules. Seventy-something generations back to the Cataclysm that fractured Peridot and the Re-Creation that made it what it was now. Seventy-something generations of garbage and waste swirled in the gravity trap. And down here, nothing ever decayed.

Soon she got close enough to see movement: the hoarbeasts pulling themselves across the wrecks, their undersides a chaos of tentacles. Their bodies flashing gray and silver in an imitation of the flotsam. They moved above and below the gravity line, scanning the field of garbage with cavernous eyes and probing the jetsam with sensitive, bobbing whiskers. Always in search of fresh additions to the flotsam layer. In search of food. In search of the dead.

And they would find them.

Mostly Cutter folk. Some Vein. Even a Rakkar or two. The Bone fed their dead to the ravens and kept the bones, but still ended up in flotsam. Usually lost with their ships. No Breakers, of course. Their population was finite and, as far as the ages since Re-Creation had proven out, didnโ€™t die of natural causes.

If they couldnโ€™t find dead flesh, theyโ€™d be perfectly happy to accept the living.

Continuing to descend, Talis was far too aware of such things. Her brother had tormented her with stories of the hoarbeasts when she was a child, and she grew up convinced they clung to the bottom of her bed the way they latched onto the hulls of airships that flew too low, too close to flotsam. Convinced that their tentacles and their long, sharp teeth would find her in the dark.

In her forties now, and captain of a smuggling ship that had taken on many a perilous contract, she still didnโ€™t sleep with her feet hanging off her mattress.

Breaking the Silence by Author Nancy King Spotlight

Breaking the Silence by Author Nancy King Spotlight

I am so happy to share my special spotlight for author Nancy King’s memoir, “Breaking the Silence”. I will be sharing my review of this book soon, but I wanted to share more about this book and what it’s about.

About Breaking the Silence:

Secrets. Lies. Silences. Stories told by parents and their families to protect themselves. A father who defends his wife despite her damage to their daughterโ€™s health and welfare. A mother, shielded by her husband, who perpetuates murderous acts of violence against the daughter, and keeps secret her husbandโ€™s sexual โ€œplayโ€ with the young girl.

And yet โ€ฆ Nancy King, determined to learn the truth of her childhood and the heartbreaking effects it has had on her adult life, uncovers the secrets. Sees through the lies. Breaks the silence.

Empowered by the stories she told herself as a child, she learns to use stories as part of her work as a university professor teaching theater, drama, world literature, and creative expression. Gradually, with the help of body work and therapy, she finds her voice. Says no to abuse and abusers. Reclaims herself and life. Writes a memoir.

She climbs mountains. Weaves tapestries. Writes books. Makes friends. Creates a meaningful life.

This is her story.

About Author Nancy King from the author herself!

I was born in Brooklyn, NYC. From the time I was 8 years old, until I left for college at 17, I traveled by myself into Manhattan to take a dance, theatre, or music lesson. After class I was free to wander about the City until I had to leave for home at 4:30. I ate in small Mom & Pop ethnic restaurants, savoring food I could neither spell nor pronounce. Theatre and dance tickets in the balconies were cheap and museums were free. All I needed were two nickels for the train rides, a nickel in case I had to make a phone call, and a quarter for lunch. The City was mine to explore. These years made an indelible impression on me in many ways: I enjoyed being with a diverse group of people, attending a variety of arts performances, and making my way in unfamiliar worlds with confidence and curiosity.

Early experiences with abuse both at home and school led me to becoming a teacher, writer, playwright, and essayist, always focusing on issues of empowerment. I have taught creative writing, storymaking, drama, and literacy workshops in schools, universities, professional development programs, prisons, Head Start, mental hospitals, recreational centers, programs for children and adults with learning differences, and older adult programs in the US and abroad.

In 1985 I was diagnosed with a rare and anomalous form of leukemia. When treatment allowed me to think in terms of years rather than months, and ten years after becoming a full professor at the University of Delaware, I received my PhD, in multi-disciplinary studies focusing on literature, psychology, and philosophy.

As an award-winning author of seven books of nonfiction, my focus has always been on developing creative expression, arts-based approaches to learning, and student-centered learning. I have also written five novels, one of which, The Stones Speak, has been optioned for a movie. The focus in all of my writing and teaching has always been on empowerment. My newest book, a memoir, Breaking the Silence, is about the healing power of stories.

Kid on the Go!: Memoir of My Childhood and Youth by Neill McKee Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Neill McKee takes readers on a personal journey exploring his own childhood in this prequel to his award-winning book (Finding Myself In Borneo) and highlights the exploration of childhoods not necessarily marked by tragedies but by the life journey so many around the world experience in his book, โ€œKid on the Go!: Memoir of My Childhood and Youthโ€.ย

Advertisements

The Synopsis

In this new book, McKee takes readers on a journey through his childhood, adolescence, and teenage years from the mid-40s to the mid-60s, in the small, then industrially-polluted town of Elmira, Ontario, Canadaโ€”one of the centers of production for Agent Orange during the Vietnam War.

McKeeโ€™s vivid descriptions, dialog, and self-drawn illustrations are a study of how a young boy learned to play and work, fish and hunt, avoid dangers, cope with death, deal with bullies, and to build or restore โ€œescapeโ€ vehicles. You may laugh out loud as the author recalls his exploding hormones, attraction to girls, rebellion against authority, and survival of 1960sโ€™ โ€œrock & rollโ€ cultureโ€”emerging on the other side as a youth leader.

After leaving Elmira, McKee describes his intensely searching university years, trying to decide which career path to follow. Except for a revealing postscript, the story ends when he accepts a volunteer teaching position on the island of Borneo, in Southeast Asia.

The Review

This was such a moving and engaging story. The author did such an excellent job of regaling readers with personal memories and both hilarious and sentimental moments from his youth that many readers would be able to relate to, while also painting an image of life in the Canadian small-town lifestyle the author grew up in. Acting as the readerโ€™s eyes and ears in the era and setting, the imagery and the descriptive way the author wrote really transported one to the childhood the author had lived through, and even the descriptive smells that defined the different parts of town felt like they could be easily conjured when reading.

The highs and lows the author describes in this narrative paint a very special yet relatable picture of childhood in those times, and even some things that readers could be able to relate to now. From gaining oneโ€™s first pet as a child to the tragic loss of that pet years later, and everything in-between, the author covers a lot of memories and topics that explore his childhood, and the inclusion of original photographs from the authorโ€™s life and original drawings as well made the authorโ€™s life really pop in the readerโ€™s minds.

The Verdict

A memorable, insightful, and entertaining memoir, author Neill McKeeโ€™s โ€œKid on the Go!: Memoir of My Childhood and Youthโ€ is a must-read nonfiction book. The way the author was able to cover his childhood and youth and present it in a way that gave voice to those who have experiences worth noting without having to have had a particular tragedy occur gave this book a unique voice, and personal experiences of my own life that the author touched upon showed how readers would be able to find instances and moments in the authorโ€™s life to relate to, which is the perfect way to bring readers into the nonfiction genre. If you havenโ€™t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!

This memoir is a stand-alone prequel to his first travel memoir Finding Myself in Borneo: Sojourns in Sabah (2019) on his first overseas adventures in Sabah, Malaysia (North Borneo), where he served as a Canadian volunteer teacher and program administrator during 1968-70 and 1973-74. This book won the 2019 New Mexico/Arizona Book Award for Biographyโ€“(other than a New Mexico/Arizona subject) and a Bronze Medal in the 2020 Independent Publisher Book Awards (Ippy Awards).

In late 2020, McKee also released Guns and Gods in my Genes: A 15,000-mile North American search through four centuries of history, to the Mayflowerโ€”an entertaining account of how he searched for his roots in Canada and the US, in which he employs vivid descriptions, dialog, poetic prose, analytical opinion, photos and illustrations. In this work, McKee slowly uncovers his American grandmotherโ€™s lineageโ€”ancestors who were involved in almost every major war on North American soil and others, including a passenger on the Mayflower, as well as heroes, villains, rascals, and ordinary godly folk. Through his search, McKee exposes myths and uncovers facts about the true founding of America.

McKee, who holds a B.A. Degree from the University of Calgary and a Masters in Communication from Florida State University, lived and worked in Asia, Africa, Russia and traveled to over 80 countries on assignments during his 45-year international career. He became an expert in communication and directed/produced a number of award-winning documentary films/videos, and wrote a many articles and books in the field. McKee is now busy writing another travel memoir on his career. He does readings/book signings and presentations with or without photos. He prefers lively interactive sessions.

Blind Spot by Robert Hoffman Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

An average family man whoโ€™s always seen himself as a decent guy finds his world turned upside down when the one neighbor he canโ€™t stand collides with him one fateful afternoon, resulting in an accident that could destroy his life forever in author Robert Hoffmanโ€™s โ€œBlind Spotโ€.

The Synopsis

Doug Kaplan seemed to be doing about as well as one could hope. He had a beautiful and loving wife, three healthy boys, and a successful career. He also had a neighbor who seemed to exist for the very purpose of driving him crazy. Trudy Fleischmann was a force of nature, a presence to be reckoned with for sure. She didn’t mean any harm, but if she had a thought, or an opinion, she was going to share it with whomever happened to be in her crosshairs, and lately that had been Doug.

The problem was, nobody else seemed to mind Trudy, and this made Doug even crazier. With peaceful coexistence seemingly beginning to fail, it appeared as if an ugly conflict between Doug and his elderly German immigrant neighbor was going to be unavoidable, until the accident, the accident that changed everything.

Now, in the aftermath of a moment of carelessness, everything Doug holds near and dear is at risk of being taken from him, and now the one individual whom he wished to see purged most of all from his life may hold the key to any chance of normalcy and happiness going forward in his life.

The Review

This was such an intriguing and intimate character-driven narrative. The author really found the perfect balance between humorous dialogue and character interactions and personal drama amongst the large cast of characters. The story felt so real and connected to our very tumultuous times right now, exploring how we often clash with those around us. The character growth and relationships explored in this narrative were so relatable and engaging, allowing readers to see the backstory to these characters and the narrative overall felt like such a rich and fulfilled journey to readers overall.

What really struck me with this narrative was the theme and atmosphere of this story overall. The concept that we as people rarely if ever are able to see the flaws or mistakes we make in our own lives, and are always quick to point out other peopleโ€™s flaws instead was such a relatable theme to the age we are living in now. To me, what stuck out was how the story seemed to explore how we often criticize others who seem to reflect our flaws that our subconscious buries deep within ourselves, and take our internal frustrations out on those around us.

The Verdict

A memorable, heartfelt, and detailed yet entertaining read, author Robert Hoffmanโ€™s โ€œBlind Spotโ€ is a must-read, character-driven humorous drama. The immersive way the author transports readers into the narrative and makes the characters feel so alive and gripping to behold will keep you enthralled as the story unravels, and the emotional yet heartwarming ending will be a moment of true clarity and hilarity to readers as the pages come to an end. If you havenโ€™t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!

About the Author

Itโ€™s about time somebody asked that question.  Rob Hoffman is originally from a town on Long Island called North Massapequa.  He attended SUNY Oswego where he majored in Communications, a degree that it turned out he had little use for.  He did however meet  the woman who would eventually become my wife, the former Michelle Lindell.  Rob and Michelle lived in the aptly named Flushing, Queens for six years before moving to a town called Clifton Park, New York just south of Saratoga Springs.  Finding little value in his degree in communications, Rob became a social studies teacher, teaching in Long Island City, Queens for four years before spending the remainder of his career in Rensselaer, New York, a small city on the banks of the Hudson River just across the water from Albany.  Rob taught for 31 years before retiring in June of 2021, only to come back as a part-time teacher in September of 2021 at Rensselaer High School.  Rob had always been interested in becoming a writer and he began his blogging career as a contributor at the โ€œTimes Unionโ€ of Albany for six years.  In this time Rob also blogged for a variety of sites including Fark.com, Crooks and Liars.com, Albany.com, and Knees and Fists.com.  Rob has remained happily married to Michelle for 34 years and counting, and has two grown sons, Andrew and Alex, ages 29 and 23.  Most recently, Rob and Michelle became grandparents to the newest addition to the family, Sam Hoffman, son of Andrew and his wife Katie.

โ€œBlind Spotโ€ represents Robโ€™s first true attempt at writing fiction, an experience Rob both fun and exhausting.  Rob had thrown around several ideas as he began to think about what it was he wanted to write about, and then one day his wife had sent him to the supermarket on an errand where he saw somebody he really didnโ€™t want to spend anytime talking to, so he raced out of the store, got in his car, turned it on, slammed it into reverse and was about to speed out of the spot when he stopped himself and said, โ€œDumb-ass, be careful, you could hit somebody.โ€  Then, as Rob began to slowly and carefully pull out of his parking spot, he thought for another second and it occurred to him how ironic it would be if he accidentally hit the person he was trying to get away from and โ€œBlind Spotโ€ was born.  The character of Doug Kaplan, while not autobiographical, is sort of based on the best and worst of Robโ€™s traits.  Doug is at times the guy Rob always wanted to be, and yet at the same time, Doug also represented the guy Rob was relieved to know he never became. The other characters according to Rob are combinations of people that he knew from his childhood, as well as college and work experiences.
