When an old calls upon Lancer to save his family from a killer bent on revenge, Lancer answers the call as always. This time however, he learns he can’t always trust his friends. Lancer also learns someone else from his past is waiting for him; a woman from very long ago.

The Review

The author did an incredible job crafting a new narrative for protagonist Lancer that felt personal and action-packed. The reader will immediately be drawn in when the protagonist begins interacting with Wyatt Earp in the aftermath of the O.K. Corral gunfight. Trading Tombstone for Virginia City, the wildness the West had to offer in this era, and the imagery in the author’s writing style allowed these infamous sites to come to life on the page.

The unique character development in this book was incredible. From the strong yet vulnerable protagonist with a penchant for justice to the sudden loss of an old flame and the corrupt system for which he must fight, the reader is engaged with the hero’s journey. The personal nature of the story and the shocking revelations that this plot held allowed the reader to feel a sense of mystery that will stick with readers long after the book ends.

The Synopsis

In the third episode of the “Lancer; Hero of the West” series, “The Santa Fe Affair” our hero battles social injustice head on. Lancer finds himself doing battle with two men who control a town with a racist iron fist. As he attempts to rescue a small Chinese boy he’s also confronted by a War Lord who is the child’s grandfather come from China to take his grandson home over the objections of his paternal grandmother.

The Review

This was a compelling and gripping Western. The atmosphere and imagery in the author’s writing style made this a phenomenal read, with the gritty nature of the genre and the action taking readers into the era ideally. The fast pace of the narrative still allowed enough tension to build between the protagonist and the foes he faced in his latest mission.

The author was able to bring some depth and heart into this narrative. The character development was perfect, allowing the reader to feel the nature of the Wild West and the trail that the lone hero must traverse in these books. Yet it was the exploration of different cultures and the examination of racism in our world that really separated this story from other Westerns, allowing us to see the need for change in our own society.

The Verdict

Captivating, entertaining, and mesmerizing, author Bob Brill’s “Lancer: Hero of the West: The Santa Fe Affair” is a must-read Western novel. The twists and turns in the narrative, and the compelling narrative that sees this lone gunman having to rescue this boy and face overwhelming odds against corruption made this a memorable read. While the title suggests a sports book, “Tales” is actually a book about relationships which just happens to have baseball as a common thread. Bob Brill gives credit to his childhood school teachers, coaches, parents, schoolmates and professional players who made great impressions and left everlasting memories as well as helping shape him from a little boy who loved baseball to a successful and award winning journalist.

The Review

This was a captivating and heartfelt read. The author did an amazing job of capturing a tone that harkened back to the days of childhood memories, fresh-cut grass, and the crack of a bat hitting a baseball out of the park. The imagery the author’s memories conjured up really spoke to both the time and setting of the book, and did a great job of invoking an emotional response within the reader. 

To me, the heart of this book rested in the relationships and connections the author’s memories and experiences brought to life. The relatability and emotional journey the reader goes on and the people that impacted the author’s life made for some thrilling and captivating storytelling. The way each story touched upon both the relatable moments of growing up and both the happy and sad moments of growing up and our bond to one another were so thoughtfully written out, and the thread of baseball that ran through it all kept the reader invested in the author’s story. 

The Verdict

Memorable, engaging, and thoughtful, author Bob Brill’s “Tales of My Baseball Youth: A Child of the 60’s” is a must-read nonfiction and memoir-style book. A former US Army combat veteran takes on the injustices of his own hometown after witnessing too much injustice in the world in author Bob Brill’s “The Tattoo Murder”.

The Synopsis 

“The Tattoo Murder” is the story of a U-S Army combat veteran who became a police officer back in his home town after he’d seen enough injustice in the world.

A different kind of cop, Det. John Potenza travels to the tune of his own drum, the waves which he loves to surf, the women who occupy his life and the music which drives him. All this is secondary to getting it right when it comes to justice. An Italian-American who knows his way around the kitchen, the fit and trim with comic book hero good looks catches the eye of almost every woman he meets. If he were British he’d probably be in “her Majesty’s Secret Service” with a Double-O in his name.

Many of the characters in the book are derived from Bob Brill’s own past and acquaintances and friends and while the book is a work of fiction, the people are real – well sort of.

The Review

This was a very cinematic, captivating crime thriller. The author does a great job of finding that perfect balance in character development with the buildup of the narrative overall. The gritty nature of the criminal underworld serves as a perfect juxtaposition to the almost dreamy vibes of the setting, and the tension that builds as the investigation goes deeper and deeper into elements of corruption and brutality will keep the adrenaline pumping as the narrative takes off. 

The core of this narrative has to be in the dynamic character growth in the story, especially with the protagonist. In many ways, John hits like a classic police procedural hero, in the same vein as characters from Lethal Weapon or Dragnet, with his proclivity for being a lady’s man and being much like a rock star on the force. Yet his dedication to the truth and fighting for justice speaks to his moral code and gives readers a new literary crime hero to root for in his quest to bring light into the shadows that criminals create for themselves.

The Verdict

Memorable, action-packed, and entertaining, author Bob Brill’s “The Tattoo Murder” is a must-read crime thriller. The nuanced way the author highlights the character’s journey and the almost noir elements of the narrative helped add depth to the twists and turns that will have readers eager for more of this modern-day gumshoe.
