I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young middle school aged boy finds himself thrust into a harrowing adventure when fantasy and horror creatures once thought fictional bring danger to his family in author R.J. Parkerโ€™s novel โ€œRequiem, Changing Times.

The Synopsis

Clint and Corbin are having a weird day. Best friends for life, things are getting a little strange around their town, and at school. When they’re followed by a strange man looking for Clint and later attacked by an imp, it makes sense to retreat to the safety of home. But when strangers from another world, Banks and O’Neil, arrive with their medley of allies, things get even weirder. Why are they here? What do they want? And what is The Requiem that everyone keeps talking about? As Clint and his friends and family are drawn deeper into a thrilling adventure, only one thing is for sure. They may not be getting out alive. And class with Mrs Christenson will seem like a walk in the park after this.

The Review

The author does a brilliant job of blending several genres together in a cohesive way. A fusion of fantasy and horror with some elements of sci-fi, mystery and suspense in the YA genre umbrella so to speak make this novel really shine brightly.

Fans will get a fantastic cast of characters to root for and stand behind, not least of all protagonist Clint, a young boy suffering from a profound loss and getting into trouble at school and with his new family unit when he is suddenly thrust into life or death stakes and adventures, forcing him to reevaluate his priorities and the choices he had been making.

What really stuck out though was the authorโ€™s flipping of the script in the YA fantasy/horror genre. Most often young protagonists must venture directly into another realm in a fantasy setting, but here we see the fantasy realm coming to Clint first, showing what would happen if these fantastic creatures and horrifying threats entered the real world in the midst of global upheaval.

The Verdict

This lengthy read is the perfect new fantasy/sci-fi drama for anyone who loves the YA genre. A great pairing of mystery and suspense and larger than life characters all culminate in a shocking finale that will have readers on the edge of their seats and leaves the door open for future installments in this exciting new series. If you havenโ€™t yet, be sure to grab your copy of โ€œRequiem, Changing Timesโ€ by R.J. Parker today!

The Review

Beautifully written, heartwarming and personal brings this anthology to life perfectly. The author has found a way to connect with readers on a personal scale that showcases how connected we are to each other and our life as a whole. Stories of love lost and found again, of being honest with ourselves and speaking to the dead so that we may find a way to live fully and more make this anthology shine brightly.

The characters are relatable and the story itself is evenly paced, with each individual story delving into local legends and myths of the area that locals will be able to identify with while giving new readers unfamiliar with the legends a fresh perspective on life overall.

The Verdict

Finding oneโ€™s way in life is never easy, and most often experience something new and unique in their own way. This novel does an excellent job of creating a vast array of stories that readers will be able to recognize and identify with as the characters experience love, loss, heartbreak and connections that everyone is looking for in life. Genex of Halcyon by Joshua Stelling Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A future where machines have taken over and humanity is immersed into technology and genetically altered beings clashes with some of mankindโ€™s most difficult issues in author Joshua Stellingโ€™s novel โ€œGenex of Halcyonโ€.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

“Something special and unique in its genre. Worth reading the first time and even worth revisiting to explore its complex, fresh ideas.” “In the dystopian genre, this can be a difficult line to walk, but Stelling does it masterfully.” “[The] writing in this book is beautiful.” โ€” Steph Huddleston, The Independent Book Review

“Atmospheric and lyrical, telling the story like it took place in a dream without slowing the pace or dulling the storyline.” โ€” Jennia Ahava, Blogger

In this near-future utopia, in Halcyon all are free. People with wings fly alongside skyline railcars, between the towers. They are more than what weโ€™ve known as human, the next stage of our evolution. Amid the psychic computers and genetic freaks, competitive laser sports and mindless bots, runs a love triangle stronger than death itself. Over these three nights in 2051, Harmony and Azad must find their way through misfits and prophets, blood and tears, to new horizons. Their fate, in the time of climate change, in the afterglow of the rise of machines, is entwined with the world.

The Review

A beautifully written artistic approach to the sci-fi genre, author Joshua Stelling has done an amazing job creating a futuristic society that perfectly comments on the issues we face in our own modern era. The author does an amazing job of creating a society built on technology and showcasing how technology can be beneficial in a lot of ways, yet will always keep humanity from living to their fullest potential if they rely too heavily on it.

The story allows readers to see the age old question of how we deal with love and grief in the face of tragedy. No matter how much technology grows and our own genetics evolve, the world is still full of painful memories and events that canโ€™t be fixed by technology.

The Verdict

An artistic and creative voice paints a vivid image of the future with author Joshua Stellingโ€™s novel โ€œGenex of Halcyonโ€. The novel does an excellent job of pushing boundaries and the limits of the sci-fi genre to all new heights in a read that is evenly paced and will have readers thinking critically about love, loss, and the experience of real life versus life through technology. If you havenโ€™t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!

Emotional Fossils: Mental Illness and Human Evolution by John V. Wylie Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A detailed and humanizing book takes readers on an emotional journey through the stigma of mental illness in author John V. Wylieโ€™s book โ€œEmotional Fossils: Mental Illness and Human Evolution.โ€

Advertisements

The Synopsis

This essay is the culmination of forty-five years as a psychiatrist investigating the relationship between severe mental illnesses and human evolution. I have concluded that the most important changes leading to our evolutionary success occurred inside the mind. Upright posture, large molar teeth, opposable thumbs, large brains, and the onset of culture were additive responses to the evolution of what MOTIVATED early humans.

The inner experiences of major depression, panic disorder, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder are shown to derive from the breakdown of normal emotions we all know intimately. These everyday feelings are ancient, have played a central role in our evolution, and thus can be viewed as “emotional fossils.” Stigmatized for centuries, mental illnesses are revealed to be the price we pay as a species for the extraordinary mental capacities that make us human.

Short and explicitly written to be accessible, this essay interprets the scientific findings of human evolution in accordance with an evolving mind.

The Review

At itโ€™s core, this nonfiction, medical read takes readers into the heart of the painful stigma those who suffer from mental illness have to endure from those who donโ€™t understand the illness itself. The book delves into how human evolution and the emotions we experience on a daily basis are closely involved with the development of these ailments, and the stigma has only increased the progression of these illnesses.

This book is greatly detailed and creates a steady read for those who are interested in medicine, medical books and mental health awareness overall. The best way to review a book like this however is by relaying how it impacts readers, including myself.

As a mental health advocate, this book truly spoke to me in a personal way. While detail oriented, the book creates a personal understanding in those involved in or even currently engaged in the mental health field. With two very close relatives having been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, the stigma of what that illness does to a person is everywhere, especially in pop culture, and this book does a great job of breaking down those stigmas and getting to the heart of the illness overall.

The Verdict

This is a brilliant read that fans of nonfiction medical reads will thoroughly enjoy. The author speaks with an authority and expertise that will make readers feel more knowledgeable of the subject after reading this book, and in an age where mental health awareness is more important than ever before, this is the perfect read going into the new decade. Good Girls Lie by J.T. Ellison Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A chilling death takes readers into the mysterious and secretive world of a prestigious prep school in author J.T. Ellisonโ€™s novel โ€œGood Girls Lieโ€.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Perched atop a hill in the tiny town of Marchburg, Virginia, The Goode School is a prestigious prep school known as a Silent Ivy. The boarding school of choice for daughters of the rich and influential, it accepts only the best and the brightest. Its elite status, long-held traditions and honor code are ideal for preparing exceptional young women for brilliant futures at Ivy League universities and beyond. But a stranger has come to Goode, and this ivy has turned poisonous.

In a world where appearances are everything, as long as students pretend to follow the rules, no one questions the cruelties of the secret societies or the dubious behavior of the privileged young women who expect to get away with murder. But when a popular student is found dead, the truth cannot be ignored. Rumors suggest she was struggling with a secret that drove her to suicide.

But look closelyโ€ฆbecause there are truths and there are lies, and then there is everything that really happened.

J.T. Ellisonโ€™s pulse-pounding new novel examines the tenuous bonds of friendship, the power of lies and the desperate lengths people will go to to protect their secrets.

The Review

A fantastic thriller that does an excellent job of taking readers through an underutilized setting and explores the lies, deceit and horrors that come often to those enrolled in the life of the wealthy and elite. A shocking death takes readers through a harrowing story of a young woman escaping her past, only for it to come back and haunt her in unexpected ways.

As her past catches up to her, the secrets she has been hiding begin to unravel the other secrets the school has to offer, and those who reside in it. A story of family, lies and love turns into a chilling mystery that will leave the students and faculty alike of this prestigious school shaken forever. The novelโ€™s plot is what takes center stage in this carefully crafted novel, bringing the tale of this inexplicable death to life as the truth becomes stranger than the fiction the characters were telling themselves.

The Verdict

A must read thriller of 2020! A brilliant, evenly paced read that thoroughly explores the background of the school and the lives of the cast of characters, this novel will keep readers on the edge of their seat and will shock everyone as the final pages play out the story of the novelโ€™s protagonist in an unexpected way. Q&A with J.T. Ellison

โ€ข Do you plan your books in advance or let them develop as you write?

Both. Sometimes the story just unfolds, and sometimes I have to relentlessly work on themes and turning points and charactersโ€™ points of view. Every book is different, every book has its own unique challenges. Iโ€™m always thinking about whatโ€™s next, and sometimes even whatโ€™s after that. But when it comes to actually sitting down to write, I like to let the story unfold a bit, let it stretch its wings, before I try to lash it to the mast and conform it to my vision.

โ€ข What does the act of writing mean to you?

Itโ€™s a sacred contract with me and a mythical โ€œsomeoneโ€ who might read the words at some point in the future and find them entertaining or moving. Itโ€™s sheer magic on my end, creating, and sheer magic on the readersโ€™ end, when they get to experience what was in my head as I was writing. Itโ€™s the most incredible mystical experience out there.

โ€ข Have you ever had a character take over a story, and if so, who was it and why?

All the time. Oh my gosh, all the time. Honestly, if the character doesnโ€™t run away with things, I know thereโ€™s a problem. Ivy, n LIE TO ME, is a particular favorite. Sheโ€™s just so nastyโ€ฆ

โ€ข Which one of Good Girls Lieโ€™s characters was the hardest to write and why?

Ash, for sure. She was so elusive and aloof with me. The Britishisms, the secrets, the lies, she was always just out of reach. Of course, that was because Iโ€™d written her in third person. When I switched her to first, she wouldnโ€™t shut up.

โ€ข Which character in any of your books (Good Girls Lie or otherwise) is dearest to you and why?

Oh thatโ€™s an impossible question. Taylor. Sam. Sutton. Vivian. Ash. Aubrey. Ivy. Juliet. Lauren. Becca. Gavin. Baldwin. Xander. They are all me, on some level, whether itโ€™s a fear or a triumph, a flaw or a heroic action. A moment of love or a moment of animosity. Itโ€™s like asking me to choose among my children, which one is my favorite. (I donโ€™t have kids, by the way, but I couldnโ€™t pick my favorite of my kittens, either.)

โ€ข What did you want to be as a child? Was it an author?

I desperately wanted to be Coloradoโ€™s first female firefighter. When that job was taken, I cast about. Doctor. Lawyer. Fighter Pilot. Spy. International business maven. Olympic swimmer. Poet. In the end, being a writer was my only choice. That way, I get to experience all the lives I could have led.

โ€ข What does a day in the life of J.T. Ellison look like?

Itโ€™s rather blissful. It starts rather lazily, with the cats cuddled into my arms and the newspaper on my iPad, then progresses to kicking the lazy beasts out, pouring a cup of tea and handling email. I am not a morning person, so I tend to do business in the morning and writing in the afternoon, when Iโ€™m sharper. Iโ€™ve always wanted to be the writer who gets up at 5 am to write whilst the birds chirp and the house sleeps, watching the sun rise and running five miles before the rest of the world is awake, but alas, it was not meant to be. You need to go to a concert that starts at ten p.m., Iโ€™m your girl.

โ€ข What do you use to inspire you when you get Writerโ€™s Block?

It depends. If itโ€™s a genuine block, a Iโ€™ve lost faith in myself and my work block, I will step away from the manuscript entirely, read, walk, golf, yoga, go out for margaritas with my husband, anything to remove me from the situation. But 90 percent of the time, itโ€™s just a story issue, so I work it out with some of my creative partners. Lots of texting and phone calls and what ifs, until it shakes itself free.

โ€ข What book would you take with you to a desert island?

Hmmmโ€ฆ my knee jerk is the Harry Potter series โ€“ I know, I know, thatโ€™s seven books, but Iโ€™m sure thereโ€™s an omnibus edition somewhere. The fight for good and evil never ceases to amaze and comfort me. Knowing love conquers evil is a big deal in this world. And Hermione kicks ass. If Iโ€™m forced into a single title, Platoโ€™s Republic. Iโ€™ve been obsessed with the allegory of the cave my entire adult life.

โ€ข Favorite quote?

โ€œDo. Or Do not. There is no try.โ€ โ€“ Master Yoda

โ€ข Coffee or tea?

Loose leaf earl grey. Making tea is a meditative experience for me.

โ€ข Best TV or Movie adaptation of a book?

Clueless, hands-down the best adaptation of Austenโ€™s Emma ever, and Iโ€™ve been enjoying A Discovery of Witches, based on the fabulous books by Deborah Harkness. Outlander isnโ€™t bad, either. And Game of Thronesโ€ฆ obviously, I donโ€™t include anything past the second episode of the final season of that, though I did enjoy the whole Deanarys-Drogon airborne apocalypse. I mean, talk about a girl who had reason to be aggravated with society.

โ€ข Do you have stories on the back burner that are just waiting to be written?

So. Many. Stories. I will never get to them all. At last count, there are 49 in my โ€œStory Ideaโ€ folder, with several more floating around in my head.

โ€ข What has been the hardest thing about publishing? What has been the most fun?

The hardest is staying in the game, juggling the necessary mix of creativity and business, finding new paths to reach readers and leveling up the writing so itโ€™s possible to grow my career. It was much easier to write, to focus, before our constant connections to the internet consumed us. The most fun is that email from a reader, when something Iโ€™ve written strikes a chord with them and they write to tell me they love a story, or a character, or an ending. It doesnโ€™t get better than that.

โ€ข What advice would you give budding authors about publishing?

Stay as much in a vacuum as you can while writing. You donโ€™t need a platform, you need an excellent, groundbreaking book. And read everything. Everything you can get your hands on. You learn writing through osmosis as much as writing the books themselves. Find your writing habit and hold it sacred. If you respect your work, your people will, too.

โ€ข What was the last thing you read?

I just finished Holly Blackโ€™s THE QUEEN OF NOTHING, the finale of her Folk of the Air trilogy, and just finished listening to BAG OF BONES by Stephen King. Both were exceptional.

โ€ข Your top five authors?

Diana Gabaldon

JK Rowling

Deborah Harkness

Leigh Bardugo

Sarah J. Maas

โ€ข Book you’ve bought just for the cover?

Thatโ€™s how I found the Holly Black trilogy โ€“ I adored the cover of THE CRUELEST PRINCE.

โ€ข Tell us about what youโ€™re working on now.

Iโ€™m writing a novel about a destination wedding that goes very, very wrong. It has loose ties to Rebecca, and it titled HER DARK LIES.

A Love Hate Thing by Whitney D. Grandison Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Tragedy and heartbreak bring two teens from very different worlds together in unexpected ways in author Whitney D. Grandisonโ€™s novel โ€œA Love Hate Thingโ€.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

When theyโ€™re stuck under one roof, the house may not be big enough for their hateโ€ฆor their love.

When Tyson Trice finds himself tossed into the wealthy coastal community of Pacific Hills, heโ€™s ready for the questions, the stares and the feeling of not belonging. Not that he cares. After recovering from being shot and surviving the rough streets of Lindenwood, he doesnโ€™t care about anyone or anything, much less how the rest of his life will play out.

Golden girl Nandy Smith has spent most of her life building the pristine image that it takes to fit in when it comes to her hometown Pacific Hills where image is everything. After learning that her parents are taking in a troubled teen boy, Nandy fears her summer plans, as well as her reputation, will go up in flames.

Now with Trice living under the same roof, the wall between their bedrooms feels as thin as the line between love and hate. Beneath the angst, their growing attraction wonโ€™t be denied. Through time, Trice brings Nandy out of her shell, and Nandy attempts to melt the ice thatโ€™s taken Triceโ€™s heart and being. Only, with the ever-present pull back to the Lindenwood streets, itโ€™ll be a wonder if Trice makes it through this summer at all.

The Review

An emotional and very real roller coaster of emotions take center stage in this gripping YA romantic drama. The characters become the central focus of this story as Trice and Nandy both are forced to step out of their comfort zones and find meaning in places neither of them ever thought they could.

The alternating chapters between both protagonistโ€™s point of view gives readers an in-depth look into the overall theme of star-crossed lovers, a breakdown of privellige versus middle class living and of breaking down the barriers created by stereotypes and judgment to discover who people are on the inside. The heartbreak of Trice and his past collide with the upscale lifestyle Nandy has grown up with, and each of them learns things are not quite as they seem from the other side of their respective fences.

Yet it is the story of real love that takes hold in the readerโ€™s minds and hearts here. Not a fairytale style love that people always dream of, but of true love that comes with pain, heartbreak, and solid connections that speak true to readers everywhere, making this an excellent read.

The Verdict

This is the perfect YA drama to start off 2020. A great mix of drama, romance and teen angst makes this the perfect read that is relatable to teen readers and memorable to many others. With a dramatic conclusion, this evenly paced read is not to be missed, so be sure to grab your copy of Whitney D. Grandisonโ€™s novel โ€œA Love Hate Thingโ€ today!

A broken heart is one of the toughest, most difficult things to overcome in life. In author Marvin Scholzโ€™s book โ€œLearning How To Heal A Broken Heartโ€, the painful process is analyzed and the road to recovery given the spotlight it deserves.

The Synopsis

I have yet to meet someone who has not been heartbroken at least once in their life. It happens to us all, more often than not, itโ€™ll happen more than once. We get heartbroken, we get disappointed, we get rejected. Itโ€™s part of life. We live in a world with flawed humans who fail us and make mistakes. Many of our dreams are wrapped up in these humans, and because of that, brokenness is just a part of living on this earth. Itโ€™s a price of admission to this life and something which we all must pay. We canโ€™t always control the situation or the outcome for that matter. But we can control how we respond to the devastating blow when heartbreak strikes.

In this book, I will go over all the ways one can truly heal from heartbreak. Dealing with the pain that comes with it, the struggle, the insecurities, disappointment, and the rejection. I will show you how to combat grief and how to endure the difficult road to becoming whole again. Heartbreak and disappointment, they change you; change how you eat, how you sleep, and how you interact with others. It shakes you to your very core. The essence of who you are. Recovering from such trauma can be an extremely lengthy and challenging process. If done incorrectly, youโ€™re not only prolonging your heartbreak but also risking long-term emotional damage.Add to the fact that most people donโ€™t even know what genuine healing really is, and then you understand why most people never truly accomplish it. In a world that leaves us broken many times over, we must excel in the process of healing.

Healing is an art. An art that we must master if we want to live a truly fulfilling life. If we’re going to create healthy, long-lasting relationships, then we have to learn how to heal fully, and in the right away from the ones that leave us broken. Because heartbreak isnโ€™t physical trauma where our bodies automatically know how to respond. No, Iโ€™m afraid with mental trauma, the healing process is far more complicated than that. And itโ€™s entirely up to us whether we heal or not. If your heart is heavy, if your soul is crushed, if youโ€™re suffocating in immeasurable grief and disappointment, I want you to take this book and let it be your lifeline for these troublesome times. Let me be the compass that will lead you out of this storm.

The Review

This is a beautifully written, honest and heartfelt book that everyone will be able to benefit from. The author does a masterful job of creating a fast paced yet impactful read that takes readers through the difficult yet rewarding process of handling grief and a broken heart overall.

From accepting the pain that comes from heartbreak to learning the things one shouldnโ€™t do to cope with that heartbreak to finally moving on and accepting what has happened overall, this book does a fantastic job of meticulously examining these moments in any personโ€™s life. Far too often people have their hearts broken in one way or another, and it is easy to fall into unhealthy habits to cope with the pain it brings. The author uses personal experience and honesty to shed light on the problem with this process, and how finding a healthy solution to heal from heartbreak is the best thing possible.

The Verdict

A fairly short yet important read, author Marvin Scholz has done an excellent job of creating a book that will engage readers on a personal level and truly help readers who have experienced their own brand of heartbreak in their lives. While a painful experience, the author helps guide readers through the process of understanding the pain, finding ways to cope with and heal from the heartbreak and finally finding peace and happiness on the other side. Solar Dividends: How Solar Energy Can Generate A Basic Income For Everyone On Earth by Robert Stayton Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A bold new plan to help curb carbon emissions and still generate a healthy income to improve the economy takes shape in author Robert Staytonโ€™s book โ€œSolar Dividends: How Solar Energy Can Generate a Basic Income For Everyone On Earthโ€.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Imagine a world where poverty has been eliminated and global warming has been brought under control.

Imagine this can be done via a single program. Imagine that we can start on this today.

Thatโ€™s the world envisioned by Solar Dividends, which puts forth a bold new planโ€”use solar energy to pay for unconditional basic incomes for everyone on the planet.

The idea is simple: we set up solar panels for each person, sell the electricity the panels generate, and deliver the money as solar dividends to the person as their basic income, for the rest of their life.

This program wonโ€™t require tax money because the solar panels pay for themselves through the money they earn by generating electricity. The money wonโ€™t run out because the panels are maintained and replaced as needed. And we donโ€™t have to wait for an international treaty because every country receives enough raw solar energy to set up their own program.

Solar energy gives us a new way to pay for basic incomes, and basic incomes give us a new reason to build solar energy. Combining these two big ideas will lift everyone out of economic insecurity, reduce the carbon emissions that drive climate change, and assemble a clean energy system that can sustain us indefinitely into the futureโ€”all with one program. Solar Dividends makes clear the practical steps to bring about this positive future.

The Review

As we head into the new year and the question of climate change and energy as a whole is still a contentious topic, author Robert Staytonโ€™s book is a refreshing, straightforward and unique read that brings a fresh and honest view on the subject. Readers will find a bold, easy to follow yet difficult to implement plan that would bolster the economy and energy fields without the negative impact on the environment as a whole.

One thing the author clearly defines is that while the plan he lays out is clear cut and showcases a straightforward path to solar energy and a boom to the economy as a whole, the difficulty of the plan running up against political pressure and the laws as they exist now not only in the United States but around the world is something that makes this plan the most difficult to implement. Yet the author lays out the benefits and the real detailed plans to bring the idea of solar energy and dividends to life in crystal clarity that gives readers a lot to think about and consider as we as a society moves forward in life.

The Verdict

A brilliant book that not only has a detailed plan and path towards solar energy and solar dividends while also implementing a unique narrative of the future that outlines how this plan would look to the average consumer. Itโ€™s a fast paced, easy read that puts a complex yet feasible plan forward and challenges the reader and those in power to consider these options as a viable energy solution.
