A Gilded Redwood Coffin (The Roddy and Val DeVere Gilded Age Series by Cecelia Tichi Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A mission to save a young woman’s life turns into a twisted murder investigation in the Gilded Age in author Cecilia Tichi’s “A Gilded Redwood Coffin,” the latest entry in The Roddy and Val DeVere Gilded Age Series.

The Synopsis

Western silver heiress Val DeVere expects nothing but joy at an elegant Newport picnic in 1899, only to be abruptly summoned to New York by a close friend’s urgent and cryptic plea: “PLEASE HELP…THEO B.”

In New York, Theo confides in Val, begging her to save his lively cousin Phoebe from a cunning Irish manservant who, he claims, is plotting her “accidental” death in the Rocky Mountains—just as he allegedly orchestrated the death of her twin sister in Boston a year earlier.

Determined to help her friend, Val, now Mrs. Roderick DeVere, tries to convince the headstrong Phoebe to delay her trip to the Rockies. Yet the Irish servant, whom Theo accuses of murder, reminds Val of her beloved late father, an Irish immigrant and “Silver King,” whose charm and brogue are unsettlingly familiar.

When Phoebe is found murdered in her New York apartment, suspicion falls squarely on the Irishman, appearing to wrap the case up neatly. But for Val, the truth feels far more elusive. Is she blinded by sentiment, or is there another killer lurking in the shadows? As doubt creeps in, Val faces a race against time to uncover the real culprit, all while risking arrest as an accessory to murder.

The Review

It is a genuinely tremendous and engaging read. The author does an excellent job of finding the means of balancing the high society background of Val’s character with the mystery and intrigue that the narrative provides. The imagery and atmosphere of the Gilded Age translate perfectly on the page, and the historical aspect of the setting draws the reader into the story more and more.

The character arcs in this novel were engaging. Val’s strength and resilience showcased her character’s overall growth throughout the series, yet the book allows new readers to jump into the story quickly. The haunting nature of the case and the shocking twists and turns the narrative takes will keep readers on the edge of their seats, eager for more adventures in this fantastic historical fiction thriller.

The Verdict

A brilliant fusion of high society meets gritty murder mystery, author Cecilia Tichi’s “A Gilded Redwood Coffin” is a must-read historical fiction meets mystery thriller. The twists and turns in the author’s story and how the narrative builds upon the character development of previous entries in the series will keep readers engaged throughout the narrative. The Trenches of Glodan: Perpetual War Book One by Tyler Kalarchian Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young woman with great power must find a way of surviving a war that has engulfed her world for thousands of years in author Tyler Kalarchian’s “The Trenches of Glodan,” the first book in the Perpetual War series.

The Synopsis

Since she was a child, Natalia Ludmila was destined to join the war that had engulfed the world for thousands of years. Her close friends were allowed to stay back and enjoy the freedom of life as citizens while she was sent off to join the military. The reason for her fate was the essence that flows through her veins, caused by the mark of a Blood Tree making her an esper.

This mark has left Natalia an outcast in society yet highly desired for the powers she possesses. Challenges come at her from every angle as she desperately fights to survive—a fight that could very well lead her to a chance at freedom from the war.

Now cast forth into the snow, Natalia is tasked with scouting the town of Basavan for any life within it. This simple mission promises her the rank of Gamayun. A rank that will bring great challenges and opportunities.

The Review

What a truly remarkable read. The author did an incredible job crafting a unique and vivid world perpetually locked into war. The depth of character development for the protagonist allowed her journey to feel real and haunting all at once. The author found balance in the story’s more fantasy-driven elements with the more grounded, visceral nature of the setting and events that plague this world.

What spoke to me more than anything was the book’s powerful themes that touched upon life struggles people have dealt with for centuries. The horrors of war and its physical and mental impact on those forced into it were greatly felt, and the reader could feel the emotional weight of the war, particularly the trench warfare that spoke to the WWI elements of the setting. The mythos and world-building that the book included made this a memorable read.

The Verdict

Thoughtful, action-packed, and engaging author Tyler Kalarchian’s “The Trenches of Glodan: Perpetual War Book One” is a must-read steampunk meets sci-fi and fantasy thriller. The twists and turns the novel takes, as well as the emotional journey that the protagonist takes, will leave readers eager for more from this talented author. Tales of Christmas Villains  (The Tales Short Story Collection Book 2) Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A unique twist on the holiday season comes to town as horror and fantasy authors tackle Christmas in the short story collection “Tales of Christmas Villains.”

The Synopsis

Ruined holiday plans and stolen gifts are only the beginning in this collection of villains gone wild for the holidays!

Tales of Christmas Villains brings together the most mischievous batch of scrooges, thieves, and humbugs out to wreak havoc on the Christmas cheer.

Featuring a chilling ice fairy who feeds on her victims’ souls, chaotic criminals disguised as grinches, and the infamous Jack Frost meeting his match in a plucky mermaid, these wicked adventures will have you howling with dark delight.

If you think you’ve got enough spirit to take on these troublemakers, think again. The naughty list just got longer and more sinister! So watch out this season and prepare for some seriously spirited scroogery – Tales of Christmas Villains is coming to town!

The Review

A truly fun and entertaining take on the holiday season, each story does an incredible job of leaning into their respective genres while sprinkling some yuletide magic into the setting. The action and suspense that each story holds not only do justice to the existing universes that these authors have crafted but also add more dimension by exploring unique holiday mythology and culture.

As a longtime fan of D.C. Gomez and her books, seeing a story centered around Bartholomew the Reaper and exploring that paranormal world, which felt like returning home, was great. The twist on the iconic Grinch story by adding the Reaper twist on their existence and the balance of humor and wit made this story shine as much as the entire collection.

The Verdict

Entertaining, magical, and thrilling, “Tales of Christmas Villains” is a must-read holiday fantasy/horror short story collection. The twists on iconic Christmas figures and myths, from the Grinch to Jack Frost and even Santa himself, and the harmonious blend of fantasy and holiday spirit that this collection boasted made this a memorable read. The Orb of Destiny: Tome IV (The Lost Art of Magic) by Jonni Jordyn Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A group of witches must find a way to bring back a powerful witch locked away in a coma to stop the growing threat of the sorcerer clan in author Jonni Jordyn’s “The Orb of Destiny: Tome IV.”

The Synopsis

Following the events of The Old Child, the witches’ visions of a destroyed Earth had already begun to unfold, yet Destiny, the one who everyone believed to be uniquely qualified to avert the calamity, remained locked in a coma from which she might never return. While the sorcerer clan grew in strength and size, their deranged leader grew bold and set out on a quest of death and destruction. The witches only recourse was to revive Destiny, but that meant convincing her to return.

The Review

What a powerful read. The author did a wonderful job of delving even deeper into the long and storied history between witches and sorcerers. The intense action and the heart-pounding thrills this book produces will capture the reader’s imagination as the imagery in the author’s writing style brings an almost cinematic quality to the narrative.

The way the author focuses on character development in this story is fantastic. Not only was Destiny’s struggle with her fate and coming to terms with her circumstances when her family and allies fought so hard to bring her back was so engaging to read. The villainous turns and the shocking heroics of other characters will keep readers invested, and seeing the mystery of the Librarians grow is a great lead-in for the series’ upcoming final chapter.

The Verdict

Twisted, action-packed, and entertaining author Jonni Jordyn’s “The Orb of Destiny: Tome IV” is a must-read magical realism meets action thriller. The fusion of old-world magic and centuries-old rivalries with modern-day military assets and the climactic battle between two powerful figures will keep readers on the edge of their seats. About the Author

Jonni Jordyn, an award winning American author born in Oakland, Ca, started out playing music at age two, and moved on to singing and acting in grade school. High School introduced writing and film making followed by drawing and photography in college. In other words, she had a VERY LIBERAL arts education.

Jonni published some poetry and some india ink drawings in literary magazines while in college, won critical acclaim for her acting in a cabaret theater, but was faced with a decision to pick out the arts she wanted to pursue.

Of all the available opportunities, music and song writing won the first round when she found herself performing with legendary stars of the sixties and seventies.

Round two began years later, after leaving California for Arizona. It all started with a blank piece of paper and the question, “how can I possibly write more than eleven thousand words for a single story?” A valid question which was followed up a year later with, “How did I ever write 160,000 words?”

Now, the writing comes much easier, but still there are questions like, “How will I ever get all these ideas written down?” followed closely by, “How many times can I edit the same book?”

Jonni currently lives in Colorado with her bird.

Delicious Surrender (Dominant Billionaire Series Book 1) by Luce Sutherland Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young woman writing a novel and a gruff billionaire find their worlds colliding in this steamy Erotic thriller from author Luce Sutherland, “Delicious Surrender,” the first book in the Dominant Billionaire Series.

The Synopsis

Brynne Larimore is going back to her three-date rule. Her judgmental ex-boyfriend is history, and her steamy BDSM novel needs an injection of real-life experience. Gage MacLeod has been called a grumpy alpha-hole, and he wears the label proudly. Ruthless and unyielding, he protects his London club’s elite clientele and refuses to be tempted by the willful, curvy redhead pretending to be submissive. His pr*ck might be intrigued, but rules are rules.

When Brynne attracts the attention of a notorious Russian club member known for devious tactics of seduction, Gage must make a choice: protect her or walk away. But when she betrays his trust and puts his business at risk, his wrath knows no bounds.

Scorching chemistry draws them together and a very public scandal tears them apart. Will they untangle the web of secrets and lies before it’s too late?

The Review

For anyone who is a significant fan of erotica and BDSM-forward erotica in particular, with an element of thriller and action thrown in as well, this was the perfect read for you. The author found an outstanding balance in the novel between the steamier, more erotica-driven scenes between the two protagonists and the complex character developments that brought them together and drove them apart as the story progressed.

The enemies-to-lovers and lovers-to-enemies tropes blended well in this novel. The spiciness of the main character’s encounters with one another and the twist on the relationship that comes later when a personal loss takes Brynne to Skye intensify their connection in ways neither of them could have seen coming.

The Verdict

Heated, passionate, and engaging author Luce Sutherland’s “Delicious Surrender” is a must-read for fans of erotica and romance. The infusion of action, suspense, and character-driven narrative will instantly grab fans of the genre and keep them enthralled with this new erotic series. Ashme’s Song by Brad C. Anderson Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young woman with a unique ability must choose between the brother she is tasked with taking care of and the resistance group that needs her abilities to fight against the oppressive regime ruling over them in author Brad C. Anderson’s “Ashme’s Song.”

The Synopsis

Violence has an echo, growing louder with each reverberation . . . how do you stop its echo once it starts ringing?

Ashme is a New Mesopotamian—a “Meso.” She dreams of being a hero, fighting against the brutal Ostarrichi ruling her country. She is an indigo child, her DNA modified by sentient AI, enabling her to control computer systems at will. With this power, she has something to offer the Meso resistance. Her twin brother, Shen, however, suffers from a neurological disorder and needs someone to care for him. Increasingly, that task falls on her.

How can she become the hero her people need when her brother’s needs are overwhelming? If she continues caring for Shen while joining the resistance, she risks leading Ostarrichi forces to her home. If she leaves, then looking after Shen will fall to her cousin, who is already overworked caring for his frail grandmother.

As her society collapses into violence, Ashme must choose between her fellow Mesos, her family, and her values.

The Review

What a heartfelt, heartbreaking, and chilling yet engaging story. The world the author created felt both other-worldly and yet relatable all at the same time, forcing the reader to see the struggles of the Mesos as struggles others have faced at the hands of police brutality, racist, sexist, and even homophobic behavior. The world-building was incredible, and the author’s writing style and imagery made the reader feel easily transported.

The heart of this narrative was the complex character development, especially with Ashme as the protagonist. The choices she faced and the challenges that came her way were like a gut punch emotionally, with the line between what’s right and what’s often needed blaring in the face of the threat the Ostarrichi represented. The relationship with her brother and the struggle to provide his safety and freedom showcased the lengths the family was willing to go for one another.

The Verdict

Author Brad C. Anderson’s “Ashme’s Song” is a must-read sci-fi thriller. Its harrowing, entertaining, yet emotionally driven plot follows a shocking turn of events, and the close examination of the fight that sometimes is needed to make big and needed changes to society overall makes this a compelling story. The Great Forest And Other Stories - Warren Rochelle

Chesapeake Air and Spaceport, North Terminal, Interplanetary Concourse A

The sun shimmered on the water, as the train pulled into the Chesapeake Air and Spaceport RR station. He gathered his things and walked out onto a winding path, into a garden of dwarf sugar maples and ash trees. The path led him over a little bridge and a stream, and lavender star-shaped flowers. He stopped there to collect himself, to remember what his therapists had taught him, Alana on Avalon, and Gavin and Julia, at Blue Ridge. Deep breaths, center and focus on the safe, on the gurgle of the stream below his feet, the star-shaped flowers, blooming by the water. Interrupt his fear-talk looping, be present now. The main building of the spaceport was straight ahead. The building seemed almost made of sunlight and water. Sea turtles, eels, dolphins, and sea horses seemed to be swimming inside its walls.

Inside, the spaceport would be filled with people from all across Terra, from who knew how many HC planets. And aliens. Strangers, all of them. Breathe in for three, hold for four, release for five. Center. Through the sliding glassteel doors, follow the signs to the ticket kiosks. Everybody was busy, going, coming. Edvard was just one more young human.

He could do this, and he had done it. He could do it again. He could hear Luc telling him that, as he touched him, kissed him.

I’m coming.

No answer.

Scattered trees inside, fountains and pools. Whoever designed the spaceport must have wanted it to look as if it was part of the bay itself. Water currents and tree-shapes in the metal and glassteel, the beams, and the afternoon sun visible in a great skylight over the departure lobby. Were those real birds flying overhead? Edvard caught the off-world accents he knew as he walked—Avalonian, Jardinero, New Scandinavian. A trio of enhanced chimpanzees, clearly traveling on business. He tried to stare at the nest of Kalsons traveling together, with their pointed ears, white-gold hair, and skin. Like Luc and his father. There were a few Kalsons like Manon with skin a darker gold, hair, a deep brown. He stepped back, as did everyone around him, at who he saw next coming down the concourse. Even though the Second Interstellar War had ended thirty-three standard years ago, clearly not enough time had passed for any Zoki to walk through the one of the largest spaceports on the North American east coast without armed HC security. No one had forgotten how many thousands of Wertyngeris had either died or were put in hibernacula for years, or how many of the frozen had been thawed and eaten. No one had forgotten how many HC soldiers died in the war. Yes, the war had ended with a palace coup, led by the Zoki crown princess. She had immediately offered reparations for the atrocities on Wertynger, and they had been paid, and were still being paid.

Edvard watched as the reptilian Zoki, all dressed in white, with ashes on their forehead, walked silently through the spaceport, staring at the floor. According to the treaty ending the war, the Zoki had to publicly atone for eating sentient life. The crown princess, now empress, had suggested fifty Terran standard years of shame and public penance. She had acknowledged that not all Zoki had known or participated, but the government she had overthrown had known, and it had had wide popular support.

Never again.

Someone spat on the floor as the Zoki and their guards walked past. He wondered if fifty Terran standard would be enough penance.

Edvard stepped in front of a ticket kiosk beside a family which was clearly emigrating. Everybody seemed to be carrying some sort of luggage, the three kids, the two dads. He inserted his passport and Universal ID into the kiosk, and selected shuttle to the station, star service to Wertynger, Next available ship, leaving Union Station. An option for stasis for the three week trip in hyperspace? Maybe after week one. Micro-cabin, no, too claustrophobic. Single double, Family? Single. It felt like forever for funds verification. Ding! Transaction complete. Please proceed to Concourse B, Gate 29, shuttle already boarding. Proceed to gate, please have ID and passport ready.

He had done it.

The Great Forest and Other Love Stories

When did I know I wanted to write? I first  read The Chronicles of Narnia in the third grade, and I fell in love. I decided then and there I wanted to be a writer. I wrote an awful rip-off of  Narnia in homage, but with a High Queen, not a High King. Somewhere in her realm was the Plain of Fire and the Plain of the Moon, so named for the color of the grass growing on each plain. Instead of centaurs, I had bucentaurs, who have bovine  (or ox bodies). To be honest, I think I discovered this chimera sometime after third grade.  Mercifully, more specific memories are hazy and the manuscript (in a three-ring binder) has been lost.

When did I know I was good at writing? This came slowly over the years, most often in affirmations from teachers, from junior high through college. I won an Honorable Mention in a Scholastic contest.  in the 9th Grade for a poem about a green-skinned boy, half-human, half-alien, who couldn’t handle his telepathic powers. I got published in my high school literary magazine, and again in my undergraduate literary magazine.  All of these helped me to know that I could write well.

My first publication was a short story, “Her Hands Curved Around the Cup,” in the now-defunct Graffiti, in Fall 1978. This melancholy tale is about an old, lonely woman grieving for her long-dead husband, and haunted by a childhood tragedy. She marks the days of the week by drinking different teas. She reads poetry.  She is so very sad and lonely. It was a very morose tale.

What do I when I get writer’s block? To be honest, I can’t say I have, at least in the way I think this question is asking: not being able to write at all. Instead, for me, what happens sometimes is that I get this amazing idea, and I set down and write and write, pages, chapters even. Then, it fizzles out, and the story seems to have died, or gone to sleep.  Or maybe, it’s just not the right time for the story to be told.  What I do then is let it sit for a while—usually a good long while, or leave it be. I sometimes go back to the story—a long later—and try to resuscitate the tale. This usually works, but the revived story is often a lot of different. In this collection, the title story grew out of an alternate history I started when I was in junior high, after reading MacKinlay Kantor’s 1961 short novel, If the South Had Won the Civil War. For those who might interested, the Confederacy survives for about a hundred years before collapsing in the Black Revolution. So far, the history goes from the 1860s to 2562. Three stories have emerged, including “The Great Forest,” which is set on a planet with sentient trees, settled around 2400. I tried a story set on this planet twice.  Eventually, I found who the story was about and what was at stake for them.

How long have I been writing? In one sense, most of my life. My mother, who was a secretary in the Department of Sociology at Duke University, would bring home used typing paper for us to draw on. My brothers and I scribbled, drew, wrote, played games. Eventually, I drew stories, creating maps and royal dynasties. But stories written on paper? I think they started in 4th grade, which is about sixty-odd years ago.

What do I do when a brilliant idea comes along at a bad time? Write it down, if possible, in quick notes, hopefully enough to remind me of just what the idea was. Unfortunately, if this happens at night when I have a particularly vivid dream, my notes are too often illegible.

What books are currently on my bedside table (a stool by the bedroom door). This stack changes from time to time. At the time I wrote this, the books were:

The Deviant’s War: The Homosexual vs. The United States, by Eric Cervini

Spider Woman’s Daughter,  by Ann Hillerman

Night Watch, by Jayne Ann Phillips

What am I working on now?  I am writing “In Love’s Light,” a short story for a forthcoming anthology of JMS Books authors,, Love is Free, forthcoming from JMS Books in January 2025.

The Review

This was a truly special supernatural YA read. The author found a way of implementing paranormal elements into the story without making it all about ghosts or demons, but instead, more straightforward aspects of the paranormal that allowed the more personal character-driven narrative to shine. The imagery in the author’s writing style allowed the camp and the environment to come alive on the page.

The heart of this story is Nina’s development as a protagonist and the themes the author explores. The story showed the complex realities of life that so many young people face in their most formative years and the hardships that come with troubled parental relationships and trauma. The relationships that Nina developed over the summer and how the author explored everything from peer pressure and loneliness to newfound romance allowed this story to connect with a wide range of readers.

The Verdict

Honest, thoughtful, and engaging author Tricia Copeland’s “Drops of Sunshine” is a must-read YA paranormal and fantasy-driven contemporary novella that readers won’t put down. The fast pace of the narrative and the relatability of the characters and their lives will stay with readers long after the book ends. If you haven’t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!

The Synopsis

The legendary saga of Ingrid Stone-Splitter, the most loyal and greatest friend of the Dokkrsdottir, after returning home amid strife and loss.

A powerful woman of many destinies, Ingrid embarks on journey after journey to fulfill the peaceful promises of her father

Harald, to help set the stage for the Dokkrsdottir to fulfill her destiny, and to be a hammer which smashes the Dark.

The Review

Another compelling and exhilarating historical fiction meets supernatural thriller. The author does a wonderful job of capturing the tone and the atmosphere of life in the Viking Age, especially during an age when Vikings expanded into Saxon territory and blended this with Norse mythology perfectly, making the supernatural and fantasy elements feel natural to the world around the characters.

The heart of the narrative was in the new protagonist, exploring a strong supporting character in the series and giving a free perspective to the legend and destiny of the Dokkrsdottir overall. The personal nature of Ingrid’s journey and how it ties into the cliffhanger finale from the last book will keep longtime fans of this series invested and thrilled to be in the thick of the action.

The Verdict

Memorable, thrilling, and entertaining author Bjorn Leesson’s “Rune of Revenge,” the latest and upcoming entry in the Outside the Thalsparr series, is a must-read for any action-driven historical fiction meets Viking fantasy series fans. The heartfelt delivery of Ingrid’s story and the exploration of that fine line between peace and the fight to maintain that peace will stay with readers long into the next book. If you haven’t yet, preorder your copy today or grab the book on February 25th, 2025.
