Unable to change the culture of her world, where mental ailments are deemed dangerous, she must embrace all manner of skill and courage to protect her own father…

Someone she has been training to kill.

The Review

Such a fascinating and haunting YA Dystopian read. The author does a remarkable job of world-building here, immediately thrusting readers into a world vastly different than our own. Getting a fresh perspective from a young girl’s view of a world she knows little about; the author expertly explores what happens when ignorance and desperation force young people into misguided journeys and vulnerable positions, as Scona showcases a protagonist without any awareness of what this so-called “madness” is and why those in power want them eradicated, let alone the realities of her own family.

The powerful themes of mental health awareness and illness, as well as the impact they have on society and the destruction that comes from willfully ignoring or criticizing them without attempting to understand them, stood out in this novel. The imagery and atmosphere aided in these themes development, and the adrenaline-fueled tension that builds further and further Scona finds herself mixed into the complex reality of her world gave the reader a compelling YA thriller that refused to be let go.

The Verdict

Haunting, thought-provoking, and entertaining, author Jenna Greene’s “The Silencers” is a must-read YA Dystopian Thriller. The twists and turns in the story, the revelations, and the shocking cliffhanger will keep readers engaged and eager for the next entry in this series. About the Author

Jenna Greene has been writing since before she could hold a pencil, building stories with her She-ra: Princess of Power action figures and My Little Pony toys in her basement or on long car rides. Once she could pen a tale, she composed poetry and short stories, finding that she was best at writing novels. Her first fantasy story (Imagine) came to her when she was in her first year of university, and she drafted it between essays, mid-terms, and reading assignments. Once finished university, with a B.A. in English as well as a B.Ed, she began her career as a teacher and also found time to return to her writing. While teaching middle school, she wrote and published the first books in her Imagine series.

Her Reborn Marks Series took a unique journey. While traveling home from a writers’ conference in Calgary, Jenna was hit by inspiration and formed the character of Lexil – someone who had hidden strength and talents that weren’t easily recognizable. The first half of the book was written while Jenna Greene’s mother was ill with cancer, and the second half was completed after her mother passed away. Winning the 2019 Moonbeam Children’s Book award (gold) provided an opportunity for her to express her gratitude for the inspiration her mother gave her as a storyteller, acknowledging that those we love never truly leave us, as they are in our hearts, phrases, morals, and memories – a major theme for the trilogy.

Having moved to teaching younger students, as well as the addition of a daughter to her family, Jenna has been recently inspired by Children’s Books. In 2021, her first picture book was released: Winston, the Well-Dressed Wombat. Winston is unique and friendly, with a sense of style others might not imitate.

Jenna has more writing projects on the horizon, as ideas continue to arrive in her head. But deep down, she is just a little girl creating imaginative stories with her She-Ra action figures (and possibly a Ninja Turtle or two).

The Review

What an insightful and compelling read. The author does a remarkable job of capturing the difficulties and hardships that young people face in their mental health journey. The balance the author found in telling personal stories of teens experiencing everything from ADHD to anxiety and depression with the expertise in giving practical tips to people on how to combat or cope with these struggles was incredible to see come to life on the page, hitting that note of vulnerability and honesty that readers need in a book surrounding mental health awareness.

The standout part of this book to me was the tone, as the author never shied away from the personal and clinical nature of these mental health struggles and yet always found a way to inspire others to find the right path to understanding and confronting these inner battles. The depth of knowledge and relatability the book offers to younger and older readers will stay with readers long after the book ends.

The High Price of Justice: The Alvarez Sisters – Women of the West by David L Nichols Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Two sisters set out on a path of vengeance to get justice for the death of their family in author David L. Nichols’s “The High Price of Justice: The Alvarez Sisters – Women of the West”.

The Synopsis

When their family and everyone on their ranch are massacred in an 1880s range war over water rights, and the murderers “have taken their blood money and melted into the West; just disappeared, scot-free,” the surviving Alvarez sisters set out on a journey to bring the killers to justice. Their hunt takes them across the West’s boom towns and mining camps in search of the murders of their family, masquerading as teenage boys, prostitutes, wranglers, horse whisperers, and even a young priest. Early in the sister’s search, they befriend an older woman, who becomes an indispensable asset as the trio tracks down each of the murderers.

The Review

An incredible whirlwind of revenge and justice, two themes often intermingled, allowed the reader to immerse themselves in this narrative fully. The novel’s fast pace and the emotional undertone of the protagonists’ mission were perfect driving forces behind the story, and the imagery found in the author’s writing style brought the wildness and dangers of the Old West setting to life expertly.

The heart of this narrative was in the character development, especially between Anna Belle and Juanita, as they made their way into the wilds to find their father’s killer. The way the author showed the father’s unique relationship with his daughters and how he taught them to survive and be strong in the world rather than be waited on by any man was thoughtfully written into the narrative. The lengths the girls went to to find the people responsible and the intense action of the story will stay with readers long after the book ends.

The Verdict

Author David L. Nichols’s “The High Price of Justice” is a must-read Western thriller. It blends a classic Tarantino film with Tombstone. The narrative’s twists and turns and the rich cast of characters elevate the two protagonists’ journey and keep the reader engaged until the final chapter. Chapter One

Regroup

He floated, weightless and naked, surrounded by a reddish light and suspended in fluid. Something connected to his mouth and wrapped around his head, like a lover’s embrace.

He used to have a name. He searched his mind for some clue to his identity. I exist, so I must be someone. Or something.

That made sense, but got him no closer to an answer. He blinked. Who am I?

There was no immediate reply.

He lifted his hand. It was encased in metal. The gauntlet. That much he remembered, though it meant nothing to him. Except… it seemed different, somehow. Thinner.

He moved his arms in the liquid, and it sparkled around him where his shifting disturbed it. The metal extended down his wrist and along his forearm, like before, but now it went farther, around his elbow and up his bicep. He touched it with his free hand.

I can feel it. It was as if the metal had become a part of him, his nerves growing through it. He held out his metallic hand and flexed his fingers. What is it?

We call it uurcaa. It’s a sacred metal—it will protect you, and if your host dies, it will collect and save your soul.He could feel the emotions she held back from him. It is the last of its kind from our homeworld. Like us.

He blinked. Then what am I?

You are my son, Iihil. The progenitor, the one who has come before and the first of many more like you. The voice was deep and comforting.

Mother. Warmth infused him at her voice, and an eagerness to please her.

Still, something wasn’t right. He was more than that. He searched his mind, running up against that stubborn blankness. Somewhere beyond it were the answers he needed.

He’d been someone else. Before.

Who was I? Memories of a face—dark hair, intense eyes that nevertheless twinkled at him. Raven.

It came flooding back to him. His mother. His life in Gullton. Training to be a guard and meeting Raven for the first time. My name is Aik.

He reached for the mask that covered his face. It was suffocating. Something was stuck in his throat, and he coughed hard, trying to force it out, whipping around and causing the liquid around him to flash red in alarm.

Calm yourself. The voice was as thick and heavy as an ix hide, and just as soft and warm.

Aik pushed back. What are you doing to me? I don’t want this! Let me out! He thrashed about, trying to force his way through the suffocating liquid. The metal crept up his shoulder. If it covered all of him, he would be lost.

Calm yourself! It was more insistent this time.

Aik stiffened as an enforced lethargy settled over him. He lost control of his limbs, falling still in his floating prison. The voice pressed against his mind. You’re safe. Be calm, my little one.

He closed his eyes and thought of Raven, trying to stay fixed on that face. I can’t let myself forget again.

Then the world around him dissolved, and he was swept up in a torrent of memories that weren’t his own.

The Death Bringer Excerpt

“Where is she???” Kerrick stormed through the Temple, looking for Silya. Surely she hadn’t already left. I can’t be too late.

The Temple was almost empty. The few sisters still walking the halls glared at him or ignored him. All of them were heading downstairs to the hoped-for safety of the caverns.

The power was out too, of course; the ubiquitous electric lights off. Gas lanterns lit the way every ten meters or so, leaving broad gaps of darkness.

He took the main stair two steps at a time, going against the tide, anxious to find her. At the top, he tried the long talker. “Silya, where are you?”

He waited for an agonizingly long minute, but there was no reply. She must have been out of range. He slammed it back into its holster. Damned things are useless.

Ser Kek!” Dor’s voice was unmistakable. It stopped him in his tracks.

He spun around, seeing her leaning out of a doorway. Silya’s office. “Where is she?”

“She’s already gone.” Her voice held a mix of regret and awe. “You need to calm down. You’re scaring the few sisters who haven’t gone downstairs yet. Including me.”

“Sorry. Am I too late?” He put his hands on his knees, breathing heavily.

“Yes.” She approached him, putting a hand on his shoulder.

He shook his head. “I have to go after her.” I can’t believe she left without me. Then again, she was who she was — strong-willed and carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. If she thought she could help, she threw herself into the task with a zeal that amazed him.

“The verent riders are all gone, and I doubt you’d be able to get one of the uncompanioned ones to take you.” She looked him up and down. “You’re a mess, my fine Guard. Come into my office.”

Reluctantly he followed her into the small room. It was meticulously organized. Shelves lined the walls, filled with all manner of things — books, strange sculptures made out of a black, shiny rock, several vases, bottles, wooden boxes, and an assortment of other riff-raff. Neat stacks of hencha paper filled one side of her desk, held in place under a polished stone paperweight. A tray with four ceramic mugs and an akka pot sat on the other. A narrow window let in some natural light.

“Have a seat.”

He slumped into the wooden chair, defeated. “I came back as quickly as I could —”

“She just left. When she gets it in her head to do something …” Sister Dor shook her head, admiration and frustration visible on her face in equal parts. “There’s not much more to do here. We’re shutting down the Temple and sending the last of the sisters to the safety of the caverns.” She poured a mug of hot akka, the steam pouring out of the spout with the brown liquid. Its rich smell filled the room. “Drink this. It will help you get your wits about you.”

He took it gratefully. “I have to find a way to go after her.”

As if to emphasize his words, the ground shook ominously underfoot.

He held the cup aloft until the shaking passed to keep the hot liquid from sloshing onto his lap, and then took a long sip. “Did Chala come back?”

Dor frowned. “I haven’t seen her. I thought she was with you?”

“She was, but she had to take her verent out to the dam to help open the floodgates.” He hoped she was all right. If she was here, she could take me.

He got up and went to the window, looking out at the darkening hencha gathering. He took another sip of the hot drink. It calmed his nerves and warmed his stomach. The plants below rustled restlessly, as if they knew what was coming. Maybe they do.

In the distance, on the southern edge of the gathering, the practice field sat empty, save for the little flying machine. “That’s it — the flitter!”

Dor put a hand on his shoulder — a feat for someone a third shorter than he was. “We’d have to find Fen’Ost, and I’m not sure where he ended up, to be honest. He has family down on Redhawk Spine —”

“I could fly it.” He drained the cup and set it back on its tray.

“You? Have you ever flown one before?”

He nodded, closing his eyes and trying to remember the early days of his Guard training. “I flew the city one, once. And I watched Fentin take this one out to visit the ce’faine.”

It could work. It was certainly better than sitting here on his hands while Silya went to fight the invaders. Did you send me to the dam to keep me out of harm’s way? It would be just like her.

Sister Dor frowned. “Are you sure? It’s a complicated machine.”

He nodded. “I have to. Where’s Elleck?”

“I heard you were back.” His sister stood at the door, her long braid wrapped around her waist. “What’s this foolishness about taking a flitter ride?”

He grinned, setting down the cup and bounding across the space between them to throw his arms around her. “Just the person I wanted to see. Want to do something absolutely crazy with me?”

“Of course.” Elleck squeezed him back. “What are sisters for?”

Kerrick felt almost happy, for the first time in days. “Let’s go then, before I come to my senses and change my mind.” He turned towards Dor. ‘Mim Ala, is there any more of that bandy pulp to be had?”

Dor nodded. “Come on. We can get some in the kitchen.” She got up, wincing. “We can get ourselves some supplies too.” She led them out of the room.

“We?” He exchanged a puzzled glance with his sister.

“Against my better judgment, I’m coming with you. With a blindfold on, because I can’t imagine you’re as good a pilot as Mas Ost, and he left me sick to my stomach for half the day.”

“Are you … sure?” He followed her down the hall.

She stopped, nodding slowly. “Silya’s not facing this alone. I let her ground me from her little verent joyride, but at least the flitter has a nice seat inside.”

He nodded. “You should be there with her. She needs you.”

“That, my boy, has never been in doubt.” She patted him on the shoulder. “Come on. The war’s not going to wait for us.”

Inside half an hour, they had smeared themselves with the sticky-sweet substance and had gathered a few supplies.

They boarded the little craft solemnly.

He surveyed the controls, trying to remember what he’d had to push and pull during his limited flitter training.

After a few false starts, he found the right combination and lifted them — shakily — into the sky.

The Hippo Who Hated to Fight by Milt Lowe (Illustrated by Stephen Bibb) Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young Hippo braves the world to embrace who he truly is in author Milt Lowe’s “The Hippo Who Hated to Fight”.

The Synopsis

Hippos are famous for fighting and biting. But Kuno the hippo is unique. He refuses to fight even though he always gets teased.

“The Hippo Who Hated To Fight” is the sweet, fun, inspiring story of a hippo brave enough to be himself. Kuno leaves his family and friends to search for the love, kindness, and acceptance he is missing.

Colorful and creatively illustrated and written for kids ages 4-9, it teaches them fun facts about hippos and elephants and that it’s cool to be different-you just need to find your herd.

The Review

What an emotional and heartwarming read! The warmth of the illustrations and the rich dynamics between Kuno and the elephant, especially its leader, will stay with both parents and their children as the story progresses. The balance the author found between the heartening story and the attention to detail the author pays to the animal facts about elephants and hippos and the lives they lead was incredible to see come to life on the page.

The heart of this story was in the themes the author brought to life, from the value of friendship and the true meaning of a family to the question of identity and the battle to be your most true and authentic self. Kuno’s struggle and the family he finds for himself will resonate with so many young people who are looking for a sense of self and with parents who want to show their children the power of self-acceptance and friendship and how they can endure.

The Verdict

Memorable, heartfelt, and compelling author Milt Lowe’s “The Hippo Who Hated to Fight” is a must-read children’s book. The engaging and thoughtful themes will allow the dynamic characters and story to elevate and bring parents and children alike together perfectly. Wet, Warm and Noisy: A Jake Ward Novel by David A. Wilson Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review All opinions are my own.

An Alaskan State Trooper battling cancer finds a routine investigation turning into a complex web of mystery and intrigue in author David A. Wilson’s “Wet, Warm and Noisy: A Jake Ward Novel”.

The Synopsis

The human brain is too wet, warm and full of random noise to sustain quantum activity. Or so we thought…

Surrounded by the unforgiving climate of the frozen north, Jake Ward, a tenacious Alaska State Trooper Investigator and cancer survivor, is on a relentless quest to regain his health and return to full-duty status.

But Ward’s world takes a bone-chilling turn during a routine polygraph examination when a woman escapes custody, leaving an officer critically injured. What started as an ordinary investigation transforms into a complex web of intrigue, where medical experimentation and consciousness collide.

In “Wet, Warm, and Noisy,” Willson masterfully blurs the boundaries between law enforcement and science fiction, leading readers on a heart-pounding journey through a realm where the tangible and the mysterious intersect. With time slipping away, can Ward decipher the enigmas that defy reason, or will dark forces overwhelm him?

With over two decades of experience as an Alaska State Trooper, author David A. Willson brings a rare authenticity to crime fiction that will both enlighten and captivate you. Prepare yourself for an electrifying thriller that challenges the very foundations of our reality.

The Review

What a rich and compelling mystery read. The author did an incredible job of layering this story with a suspenseful atmosphere and the chilling tension that mounted as the story progressed. The inclusion of science fiction into the story was a welecome twist, and exploring a medical sci-fi mystery that touched upon life after death and so much more helped elevate the overall mystery of the novel.

The heart of this narrative was in the character development. Ward was a great protagonist, with the balance of his perosnal life with his new case showcasing the heart and drive of the story’s hero. The mystery behind Bella, especially her standing in the case as  either a victim or a criminal (or both?), and the shocking villain of this story helped to make the overall plot more grounded and eerie as the story progressed.

The Verdict

A remarkable blend of medical sci-fi and mystery thriller, author David A. Wilson’s “Wet, Warm and Noisy: A Jake Ward Novel” is a must-read book.. The twists and turns in teh suspenseful tale and the heart that was poured into the character arcs in this novel a

The Synopsis

Vox Montague is no stranger to waking up hungover and naked. As the Kahuna of Tampa Bay, he juggles his role as a supernatural peacekeeper with drunken strip club shenanigans, money woes, and a relationship with his witch-babe of a girlfriend that requires even more patching than the pipes he works on at his plumbing company.

As the stakes ratchet up, can this impetuous magic-wielder conquer his inner demons so that he can protect Earth from the murderous, real-life ones?

With spectacular world-building, delicious raunch, and LMAO humor, if you like in-your-face action, epic quests, and flawed heroes, then you’ll love Brent A. Phillips’s tyrannosaurus-size urban fantasy.

The Review

This was one of the more mature, raunchy, action-packed fantasy reads. The balance of humor and grit that the author was able to infuse into the story and the descriptive nature of the writing style allowed the reader to feel engaged with this cast of characters right from the start. The way the author can weave together the magical side of this story with the real-world human elements makes this feel like a plausible and honest depiction of the world the author has crafted.

The heart of this story rests in the world-building, mythos, and character development. Immediately, what stood out was the protagonist, for Vox is a truly flawed hero. The magical nature of his work and the role he takes in this story meld with the realism of his character. The issues he faces as a person and in his personal relationships speak to the authenticity of this individual and make his heroics more profound when his character grows.

Traumergy by Patrick R. Carberry Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

An MIT professor and former FBII intelligence officer works to unravel a conspiracy after discovering a new form of energy based on past trauma in the novel “Traumergy” by Patrick r. Carberry.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Professor Peter Morley is a retired FBI Intelligence Officer and Christian who becomes a neutrino physicist at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He started using new technology which identified a new form of energy based on traumatic past events he calls “Traumergy” which display events in the form of holograms.

While, working on a prototype of Traumergy Professor Morley identifies a conspiracy. The leaders of the company plan to go public based on stolen technology from MIT. Professor Morley works to find the truth using Traumergy and identifies a timeline which first started in 33AD.

The Review

The author was able to craft a mystery and a thought-provoking narrative in a short amount of time. The quick escalation of the scientific discovery that came with Traumergy and the exploration of what both the government and private corporations will do when faced with new technology was significantly represented by the conspiracy the protagonist came against in this novel. The world-building and the character arcs in this short novella made the story feel tangible and inviting, with an incredible story that readers could get lost in.

The heart of this story rests in the idea and concepts surrounding the bridge between science and spirituality. While many religious readers will be able to identify with the protagonist and his shared balance between both worlds, even non-religious individuals can engage with this story. The idea that trauma and traumatic events throughout both personal and world history can make an actual physical impact on an environment has always stood out to me as both a reader and a paranormal investigator, and exploring the different applications that energy can impact our world was a great source of storytelling in this book.

Advertisements

The Verdict

Author Patrick R. Carberry’s “Traumergy” is a must-read religious meets mystery sci-fi thriller that beautifully fuses theoretical physics, spirituality, and a mystery thriller element. The narrative twists and turns and the emotional and spiritual aspect of the story’s main plot will keep readers invested in this thought-provoking tale. The Review

This was a rich and diverse artwork collection for adults and children to color. What stuck out immediately was the detail in both the artwork and the introduction, which showed readers various aspects of coloring books that people don’t always stop to consider. From the different colors and the color wheel that people can use when determining to shade and what to put in the image to the various types of drawing/coloring materials you can use and how each one, from colored pencils to gel pens and markers, will appear on the page if selected.

The publishers also gave readers a chance to learn how to preserve the images once they were colored in, exploring aspects of shading, how to prevent smudging, and even framing some of your favorite photos. The mental health aspect of the coloring book also stands out, as both children and adults can find the exercise soothing and comforting, helping to maintain a semblance of balance and peace that can curb any negativity or mental health struggles in one’s life.
