William A. Richards Diaries of a Frontier Surveyor: In Nebraska and Wyoming by Lucia McCreery Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Lucia McCreery shares detailed journals that document the life of surveyors in the late 19th century in the book “William A. Richards Diaries of a Frontier Surveyor: In Nebraska and Wyoming”.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Synopsis

These unique diaries give a vivid, you-are-there view of what surveyors went through during the westward expansion. Richards, who eventually becomes governor of Wyoming and commissioner of the U.S. General Land Office, tells his story, one day at a time.

The 1869 diary covers his life in rural Wisconsin and frustration with teaching – Going west to the growing frontier town of Omaha – His surveying apprenticeship laying out townships for settlement

The 1884 and 1885 diaries cover his exploration of Wyoming’s Bighorn Basin and his return to establish a homestead and begin the large-scale irrigation project that would finance the move.

Through all the uncertainty, dangers and hardships, Richards keeps his sly sense of humor as he reveals a sometimes enchanting, sometimes harrowing tale of adventure, guts, and accomplishment.

The occasional surveying terms are explained by Wyoming’s Dr. Herbert W. Stoughton and others, in footnotes and in essays in the appendix. Dr. Stoughton has overseen surveying and mapping projects throughout the world, and frequently consulted throughout the U.S. on 17th through 20th century historical surveying matters.

Enhancing the work are biographical articles, stories about surveyors’ returns to the remote boundaries, among them the 1990s remonumentation campaign that included the state boundary “corners” established by William and his brother Alonzo, plus relevant letters and Richards’s dramatic hunting stories.

The appendix features an essay and maps of Richards’s Nebraska surveys by Gene A. Thomsen, a Nebraska deputy state surveyor and historian.

55 illustrations and photos, 22 in full color – 30 maps and diagrams

The Review

This was a powerful and informative read. The author’s ability to edit and bring to life the writings of the author’s ancestors as they worked to survey the wilds of the frontier. The attention to detail the author paid to the notes and experiences the author’s ancestors wrote down and the history of these experiences made this such an intriguing story.

The heart of this story rests in the balance between informative and personal writing. The ability of the author to lay out the events of the book in a professional matter and yet relate to the journey that the author’s relatives experienced added a depth of personal history that made the journal entries feel more profound. Surveyors’ impact on our history and the expertise brought to the surveyor field made this a much more informed book than ever.

The Synopsis

The world is destroyed.

For a thousand years, the Rehloy lived in isolation, developing a special relationship with nature. Theirs was a spiritual life, ethereal, in some ways divine. But change was in the air.

Something was coming, something ominous.

Loy And Beyond is the continuing story of a native people with extraordinary abilities, who face the invasion of a barbarous and technologically superior one.

It is the coming-of-age story of a child whose extreme sensitivities have forced him to live in seclusion. It is about his mother, who once liberated, is forever changed.

It is about a Shaman’s journey, and another’s rise. A new generation emerging, and an old and distant one arriving.

It is the story of the Ontarans, the first great civilization to rise out of the ashes of the past. Who, in attempting to conquer this new land and weaponize the violent beasts native to it,

discover something far more valuable and potentially far more dangerous.

Loy And Beyond is about first contact.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This is a masterful return to the magical yet dangerous world that the author has crafted. The rich imagery in the author’s writing style and the dynamic mythos that the author brought together in this sequel will keep fans engaged as the story melds into both the dystopian sci-fi and the fantasy genres all at once.

The character dynamics are the heart of the narrative. The stark contrast between the more spiritual tribe known as the Rehloy and the technologically superior civilization known as the Ontarans to rise out of the ashes of the old world made this story shine. The world-building that went into this narrative also elevated the fantasy elements, giving an in-depth look into how civilizations rise and fall overall.

The Review

This was a compelling and enthralling romance novel. The author does a remarkable job of drawing the reader into the narrative with rich character development and powerful imagery in the author’s writing style. The complex journey that the protagonist Fiona goes through as she navigates the negative impact of her ex-husband on her life, the growing feelings and emotions she develops for Bo, and her journey to fulfill her needs make this a memorable trip.

The heart of the book rests in the dynamic story the author developed. The way the author showed how outside forces saw her relationship with her ex and his seemingly “nice guy” persona and how that broke down in the face of his jealousy was just brilliant storytelling and true to life for many people as well, adding a sense of familiarity to the story that readers will be drawn to. The contrast of her relationship with Bo added a heat and passion to the story that will draw readers further into this narrative.

The Review

In this ever-increasing technological world, the threats that we, as individuals and society as a whole, are far grander than ever imagined. The authors do an incredible job of showcasing this, exploring the world vulnerable to digital attacks. The authors play into people’s genuine fears regarding our reliance on technology, showcasing the chaos and terror that digital terror attacks on our infrastructure can have on our world.

Yet amidst all of the technothriller action, the character development and the rich imagery really made this story shine brightly. The relationships these teammates form with one another, and the mindset of the antagonists the team comes across along their journey really helped elevate the adrenaline-fueled action that the story took on.

The Review

This was a gripping and compelling read. The author does a remarkable job of capturing the tension that builds between Rowdy and Bailey and in their lives, as well as these two dangerous individuals beginning to close in on Bailey. The intense action and suspense in this book allow the reader to get lost in the narrative itself, and the author’s descriptive writing allows the setting and atmosphere to become visualized quickly by the reader.

Yet, the character development really brought this story to life. From the dark and disturbing nature of the antagonists of this book and the horrific crimes, they committed to get to this point to the emotional core of both protagonists’ stories and the heated and passionate relationship that develops along the way, giving a nice balance of romance and action for readers to get lost in.

A young woman living in a world where the past is forbidden as entities known as Headmasters control people’s bodies for manual labor shockingly discovers memories of another person rising to her mind, as secrets about how to defeat the Headmasters begins to work their way into her life in author Mark Morton’s “The Headmasters”.

The Synopsis

How do you learn from the past if there isn’t one?

Sixty years ago, something awful happened. Something that killed everyone except the people at Blue Ring. Something that caused the Headmasters to appear. But Maple doesn’t know what is was. Because talking about the past is forbidden.

Everyone at Blue Ring has a Headmaster. They sink their sinewy coils into your skull and control you, using your body for backbreaking toil and your mind to communicate with each other. When someone dies, their Headmaster transfers to someone new. But so do the dead person’s memories, and if one of those memories surfaces in the new host’s mind, their brain breaks. That’s why talking about the past is forbidden.

Maple hates this world where the past can’t exist and the future promises only more suffering. And she hates the Headmasters for making it that way. But she doesn’t know how to fight them – until memories start to surface in her mind from someone who long ago came close to defeating the Headmasters.

But whose memories are they? Why aren’t they harming her? And how can she use them to defeat the Headmasters? Maple has to find the answers herself, unable to tell anyone what she’s experiencing or planning—not even Thorn, the young man she’s falling in love with. Thorn, who has some forbidden secrets of his own . . .

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

What a thrilling and enthralling sci-fi and dystopian YA read. The author did an incredible job of world-building here, allowing the mystery of these creatures and the fall of mankind to take hold in the reader’s mind as they are introduced to the mythos of this narrative. The Headmasters themselves are genuinely chilling, and the society they have made for themselves through humanity is disturbing and creepy, allowing the terror they represent to sink in for the reader, much like the classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers film.

Yet the character development helped make the grander sci-fi elements of the story feel alive and engaging on the page. The emotional core of Maple and Thorn’s journey together and the losses they incur over time will resonate with readers, and the visceral imagery the author brings into play will stay with readers long after the story ends, giving the protagonist a narrative that is both exhilarating and terrifying all at once.

The Review

This was a brilliant and thrilling travel guide meets fictional storytelling tale. The use of both historical and fictional characters to explore the many facets of Guyana was remarkable to see come to life on the page. The way the author captured the voice and tone of each person in the book was highly creative and expanded upon the knowledge and information for these influential sites in Guyana. I especially felt connected to the chapters with figures such as Indiana Jones, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Blackbeard.

Yet it was the culture and history of Guyana itself that really took center stage. The figures behind these chapters helped bring special attention to the beauty, struggle, and heart of the people of Guyana, and the author’s use of imagery and powerful storytelling allowed these unique places to become alive in the reader’s mind.

Isn’t She Great: Writers on Women-Led Comedies from 9 to 5 to Booksmart Edited by Elizabeth Teets Review

A collection of essays help shape the impact that cinema’s greatest female-led comedies have had in the book “Isn’t She Great: Writers on Women-Led Comedies from 9 to 5 to Booksmart”.

Beauty Awards 2022

The Synopsis

A love letter to women-led comedies.

Based on Elizabeth Teets’s program series called “Isn’t She Great” at the Hollywood Theater, this anthology is a collection of the most beloved female-centric comedies and the audiences who adore them. From 9 to 5 to Romy and Michelle to the iconic Elle Woods, the essays in this collection build on our devotion to these films and continue the conversation around funny women and how these characters have shaped so many talented writers.

As Elizabeth Teets reminds us, there is a specific power in a funny woman. A woman who dares to laugh at the world and at herself. These movies made us strong and smart and sexy (and bend and snap a lot). At the end of the day, we remind ourselves when the world only tries to let us have a little, a little money, a little confidence, a little joy to go out and get the whole enchilada.

Isn’t She Great is for anyone who loves movies and feels the glamour in pink. Cult cinema and film criticism will never be the same.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was an insightful and powerful read. The honesty and relatability that each writer exuded in their essay were refreshing to read, and the detail that went into bringing each film’s story to the forefront was great to read, as it helped illustrate the power of the message each film brought to life amid all the humor and wit.

Yet the impact on the writers themselves made this book shine. The way the authors were able to incorporate events and memories of their own lives and how they related to the films they spoke of made this a much more in-depth and heartfelt read. In particular, one essay that stood out was Michelle Theil’s “I Wanted to Bring it On,” an essay on the film Bring it On and its significance to her and so many other young women and people of color in general, which felt so compelling and engaging as a reader to get lost in.

Metallica The Master Collection Banners

The Verdict

Heartfelt, compelling, and engaging, “Isn’t She Great” is a mustered collection of essays on female-driven comedy films and their significance in these writers’ lives. The thoughtful approach to these films and the detailed way the films played out balance out the raw, emotional, and even humorous moments of these writer’s lives that made these films feel so impactful.
