I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A missing personโ€™s case and a mysterious car found with a body inside lead to a complex mystery that will leave readers on the edge of their seat in author Cynthia Fridsmaโ€™s โ€œVanishedโ€.

The Synopsis

Rose Gibbonโ€™s husband has been missing for two years. Devastated, she sells her home. The next day, local authorities investigate an abandoned car at the intersection of Westland Avenue and Hemenway Street in Boston. All the blood recedes from her face; she knows itโ€™s her husbandโ€™s car!

Meanwhile, Medical Examiner Natalie Principal arrives at the crime scene to inspect a charred body behind the wheel. The victim falls apart when she touches it. Since the car doesnโ€™t show traces of fire, Natalieโ€™s afraid the victim was exposed to a deadly dose of radiation. She informs the ATUโ€”Anti Terrorism Unitโ€”about a possible terrorist threat of a dirty bomb. As the investigation continues, digital footprints are erased, and people vanish into thin air . . . a deadly race to save Natalieโ€™s friends is about to begin.

The Review

A truly wonderful read! What beings as a simple missing person/murder mystery turns into something far more complex that will truly shock readers. A blend of classic murder mysteries with sci-fi and government conspiracies, the story takes readers through an emotional tale of a woman desperate to find out what happened to her husband, and the team of investigators who get sucked into the mystery alongside her.

While the cast of characters were wonderfully written and kept the readers emotionally invested, it was the well thought out, carefully orchestrated and expertly driven plot that made this story what it was. The twists and turns the story takes are what make truly memorable mysteries and thrillers, and as more bodies begin to pile up readers will soon discover an entire world that no one ever knew existed.

The Verdict

This was an amazing read that readers will not want to miss. A truly one of a kind tale, the author does a beautiful job of blending emotionally driven character development with complex plot building and action-fueled drama. If you like mysteries, thrillers and elements of sci-fi blended into emotional tales of loss, grief and struggle, then you will not want to miss author Cynthia Fridsmaโ€™s novel โ€œVanishedโ€. About the Author

As far back as she can remember, Cynthia has been listening to exciting stories told by her mother. She grew up reading books from Edgar Allan Poe, H. P. Lovecraft, and Philip K. Dick, among others.

It was Cynthiaโ€™s mother who inspired her to start tellingโ€”and writingโ€”her own stories.

Ms. Fridsmaโ€™s writing career started after a handicap in 2014โ€”she has a tremor in her right hand, numbness in the fingers, and pain in her wrist. She had to give up her other creative outlets, such as photography, computer programming, and gave up on juggling, so focused on what she could do rather than what she couldnโ€™t do.

Besides writing, she sometimes plays guitarโ€”in Jimi Hendrix style.

Cynthia lives with her husband and two pet bunnies in Amsterdam.

Ryanโ€™s Robot by Brian Kacica Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A complex web of mysteries unravel in a world dominated by the emergence of A.I. in author Brian Kacicaโ€™s novel โ€œRyanโ€™s Robotโ€.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Ryan is a young thrill seeker; a clever, yet depressed illusionist, who turns his dark thoughts into fuel that drives his desire to entertain. His stunts are death defying, and attract large crowds. But when his mother is pulled into a riptide and swallowed up by the ocean, the world becomes too dark for fancy tricks.

The loss of his mother crushes him, forcing him to step out of the limelight.

Ryan vanishes. He’s assumed dead, while Victor, his father, the world’s leading expert in artificial intelligence, forges on. After building an army of human-like robots for Wardlow Technologies, he creates an artificial son in the exact likeness of Ryan.

RyN2 is a secret to the world. Creating replicas of humans is a no-no.

But Victor has big plans for RyN2. Things look promising, until he’s struck by a van during an attempted kidnapping, leaving him in a coma.

Meanwhile, Ryan exorcises his demons and returns. It doesn’t take the magician long to discover he’s been replaced by the android. The weight of the situation forces him to prove his self worth and enter the stage once again. Ryan proclaims he will pull off the biggest event in magic history…

But in order for him to complete the act, he needs to reach far beyond the realm of magic. Ryan needs to make his doppelgรคnger disappear forever.

The Review

A well written, complex and sophisticated plot plays out throughout the entirety of this novel. A slow buildup over a lengthy novel, the story showcases the nature of grief, loss and family in the midst of a powerful sci-fi plot with robots becoming part of human society and A.I. growing more in depth and complexity.

The author does a great job of creating a vast cast of characters that each inhabit their own space within the context of the novelโ€™s plot, choosing to focus on an ensemble character development rather than just a singular point of view. While readers may notice the vast amount of plot points and changing character views at first, the novel begins to piece together these plot points and create a cohesive world that speaks to the authorโ€™s mythology and world building talents.

The Verdict

This is a must read sci-fi epic. A true testament to the authorโ€™s powerful voice in this genre, the story expertly crafts personal and emotional relationships into the fabric of a action packed, sci-fi heavy story that will keep readers invested throughout the lengthy novelโ€™s entirety. Were We Awake by L.M. Brown Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A series of short stories illustrate the world people thought they knew is not what it appeared in author L.M. Brownโ€™s novel โ€œWere We Awake.โ€

Advertisements

The Synopsis

In each story of this collection, events make the characters understand that their world is not as it seemed.

In Hidden, the discovery of an affair between her father and aunt is only the start of finding hidden secrets for Hazel.

What it Means to Be Empty-Handed is narrated by a fourteenโ€“year-old daughter of an alcoholic. Her denial and elaborate imagination starts to disintegrate when she lies to the wrong person.

In Crashing, a middle-aged woman lives a life of servitude until she hits teenage boy with her car.

A thirty-year-old murder takes its toll on the victimโ€™s family in Walking A Country Road.

The stories are set in Boston and Ireland.

The Review

Author L.M. Brown does it again, creating a wonderful collection of stories that are both connected and illustrate the way life constantly throws people curve balls, turning the world they knew into a completely new one. A collection that showcases that things are never simple or what they appear.

One of the truly engaging stories of the collection has to be Hidden, which delves into the complex family life of Hazel when she discovers her father and aunt are having an affair. Yet as her family life implodes, new secrets reveal that things are not as simple as they first appeared. The story is a prime example of how life is often lived in shades of grey, with people often living complicated lives in an attempt to find peace and happiness. The author beautifully illustrates the pain, the shock and the confusion that comes from having a personโ€™s world turned upside down, and perfectly taps into the emotion and complexity of humanity as a whole.

The Verdict

A fairly average length read with completely dynamic characters and stories that feel both personal and connected, this collection of stories is truly unique and wonderfully captures the authorโ€™s unique writing style and voice. A collection that honestly showcases the ever changing landscape of the world we live in, both the world at large and the world we create for ourselves. A dramatic journey through lifeโ€™s greatest challenges, this is a fantastic collection readers will not want to miss, so be sure to grab their copy of Were We Awake by L.M. Brown today!

Hug Everyone You Know: A Year Of Community, Courage and Cancer by Antoinette Truglio Martin Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A woman finds comfort and courage through journaling and her community of supportโ€™s responses in the face of a cancer diagnosis in author Antoinette Truglio Martinโ€™s novel โ€œHug Everyone You Know: A Year of Community, Courage and Cancerโ€.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Antoinette Martin believed herself to be a healthy and sturdy woman–that is, until she received a Stage 1 breast cancer diagnosis. Cancer is scary enough for the brave, but for a wimp like Martin, it was downright terrifying. Martin had to swallow waves of nausea at the thought of her body being poisoned, and frequently fainted during blood draws and infusions. To add to her terror, cancer suddenly seemed to be all around her. In the months following her diagnosis, a colleague succumbed to cancer, and five of her friends were also diagnosed. Though tempted, Martin knew she could not hide in bed for ten months. She had a devoted husband, daughters, and a tribe of friends and relations. Along with work responsibilities, there were graduations, anniversaries, and roller derby bouts to attend, not to mention a house to sell and a summer of beach-bumming to enjoy. In order to harness support without scaring herself or anyone else, she journaled her experiences and began to e-mail the people who loved her–the people she called My Everyone–She kept them informed and reminded all to “hug everyone you know” at every opportunity. Reading the responses became her calming strategy. Ultimately, with the help of her community, Martin found the courage within herself to face cancer with perseverance and humor.

The Review

What a beautifully written memoir! This novel does an incredible job of telling the painful, emotional and heartbreaking journey of anyone who has ever faced or lived through a cancer diagnosis. Blending creative and phenomenal writing with a slew of emails written between the author and their support outlets, (family, friends, etc), the author showcases the journey through cancer on a very personal level.

The book is honest, holds no punches and utilizes the authorโ€™s natural storytelling ability while giving readers something to relate to. From the initial shock and disbelief of the diagnosis to the impact on friends and loved ones and the moments where friends and family often have or end up struggling with the disease as well, showcasing how scarily  common cancer scares and actual diagnosisโ€™s really are. The authorโ€™s ability to command the readerโ€™s attention and illustrate the pain and struggle through this journey allowed the reader to connect not only with the author but the events overall on a much more intimate level, making for an emotional yet incredible read.

The Verdict

This is a must read for anyone who enjoys memoirs, is interested in the stories of those who have survived or lived with cancer diagnosisโ€™s, and those who enjoy personal stories that speak from the heart. A lengthy read that is not only honest but showcases the power of writing and how therapeutic writing and having a community supporting you can help the process of dealing with cancer overall. It is an amazing story that everyone should read, so be sure to grab your copy of Hug Everyone You Know by Antoinette Truglio Martin today!

Interview with Author R. Douglas Clark

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

I got into writing through journalism. For several years I wrote for newspapers and magazines as a freelancer. My specialty was music journalism, which is good training for writing fiction. Writing about music is almost impossible to do!

2) What inspired you to write your book?

I was (and am) inspired by the place where I live: the seasons, the people, the history. The material is very rich for writing.

3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

Live life to the fullest, and be tolerant of others. Also, have a sense of humor!

Advertisements

4) What drew you into this particular genre?

This book is not easily pegged to be a specific genre. For marketing purposes, it is called science fiction, and it does have sections of sci-fi, but there is more contemporary fiction in it than anything else.

5) If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?

Iโ€™d love to talk to Tai-Keiko because she is from another millennium. I would ask her to describe life in her time to ours.

6) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

The jury is out on this one. I think that the social media platform called โ€œword of mouthโ€ is the best of all.

7) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Donโ€™t be afraid to take chances.

8) What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

I am excited to share with everyone that I am officially participating in the first of many blog tours in association with Harlequin Books. It is an honor to be working with such a prestigious publisher and I am excited to share the slew of books heading my way over the next few months and hopefully beyond. As always, I want to preface this with the fact that all my opinions in this post are my own, and I received a free copy of this book in exchange for that opinion. With that in mind, letโ€™s take a look at this incredible romance novel, Meant To Be Yours by Susan Mallery.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

The Review

The fifth book in the Happily Inc. series, (sixth if you include book #2.5), author Susan Mallery has done a masterful job of creating a connected storyline across multiple books and characters, while also creating a wholly unique story that allows for anyone to jump into the narrative. While the cast of characters of this novel all stem from previous books, the protagonists take center stage in the story as these two people trying to escape their past come together in ways neither one of them expected.

The complexity of the characters makes this love story bloom much more than the traditional romance tale. Taking the time to explore both Jasper and Reneeโ€™s pasts that have influenced how they go about their relationship really depend the readers connection with both the book and the characters. The theme of finding love and overcoming that feeling of being โ€œbrokenโ€ played out eloquently throughout the novel, and the author did an amazing job of incorporating the atmosphere of love and romance that has become associated with this series into the characterโ€™s overall struggles.

The Verdict

Beautifully written, expertly crafted and emotionally driven. Author Susan Mallery has created a wholly original tale that keeps the overall setting and story of the Happily Inc. series in line while giving readers two protagonists that are relatable, honest and emotionally driven, giving readers an evenly paced read that will have them rooting for these two to overcome the odds and find solace with one another. Can two people who feel broken find love and overcome the odds? Find out by grabbing your copy of โ€œMeant To Be Yoursโ€ by Susan Mallery today!

Interview with Author Susan Mallery

Q&A With Susan Mallery

What was your favorite part about writing Meant to be Yours

Ohhh, thatโ€™s a hard question! I love everything about writing romance. The first kiss is still magical to me. The passion, the emotional intensity. Itโ€™s a moment that changes the course of a personโ€™s life. When you fall in love, your life is bisected into before and after. Love is transformative, and the greatest pleasure of my life is to write about it.

Jasper and Renee in particular were a lot of fun to write because Renee is just such a mama bear when it comes to protecting her brides. Sheโ€™s a wedding planner at Weddings Out of the Box, a theme wedding venue in the town of Happily Inc. Jasper is a bestselling thriller writer who wants to set his next book at a wedding. Reneeโ€™s response made me laugh so loud that Iโ€™m pretty sure I scared my pets.

Jasper continued. โ€œI thought I could follow you around for a few weeks, learn about the business andโ€”โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ she said firmly, as all thoughts of them having another close encounter faded from her mind. โ€œYouโ€™re not getting your serial killer cooties on my weddings. Iโ€™m a big believer in keeping the energy positive and flowing forward. Do you know what a serial killer would do at a wedding?โ€

He stared at her, his gaze intense. โ€œThatโ€™s what I was thinking. I want the serial killer to be a wedding crasher.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ she said firmly. โ€œJust no.โ€

When Jasper goes behind her back to get intimately involved with one of her weddings, Renee vows to keep him from bringing darkness to her brideโ€™s special day.

I also adored the animals in this book. In the beginning, Jasper doesnโ€™t trust himself to let a woman into his heart. His simple but profound act of kindness to a dog who needs a home leads to him finally being ready to fall in love. The dog, Koda, is based on a readerโ€™s real-life dog. I gave Koda the same adorable quirks and characteristics that make him specialโ€”and I gave Renee the readerโ€™s last name in her honor.

Did you find out any funny or interesting facts about wedding planning when writing this book?

I have learned that brides and wedding planners are some of the most creative people in the universe. I canโ€™t tell you how much time I spent on Pinterest, looking at pictures from theme weddings. There are some really beautiful themes, and some that are charming and humorous. Every theme uniquely reflects the bride and the groom in the most beautiful way. In Meant to Be Yours, Renee designs several lovely theme weddings with beautiful touches I think readers will enjoy. Hereโ€™s a snippet from one:

Jim and Monica Martinez were a sweet couple with a fun firefighter theme for their big day. There was a long tradition of firefighters on both sides of the family and plenty of cute touches in the wedding and reception.

Monicaโ€™s dress laced up the back and instead of white ribbon to cinch her gown, sheโ€™d used bright red. The centerpieces were ceramic boot vases painted to look like firefighter boots, filled with red, orange and yellow flowers. There was even a walk-through fountain at one end of the reception area, created with fire hoses, a pump and a lot of engineering.

Pay attention to that last sentence because I also discovered that a lot can go wrong when you invite a few hundred people to a party. Imagine a room filled with people who arenโ€™t used to dressing up, plus a fountain made with fire hoses, and a wedding planner who will do anything to protect her bride.

Did Renee or Jasper surprise you while you drafted this novel?

They did! When I started this book, I thought Jasper was the more wounded of the two. But as I wrote, I discovered that Reneeโ€™s scars went deeper than I thought. Sheโ€™s been keeping a secret from her friends in Happily Inc, a secret about her mother that has cost her jobs, friendships and romantic relationships. Just when she starts to feel safe and accepted in her new home, her mother comes for a visit. . .

Can you share about what you’re working on right now?

Iโ€™m working on revisions on the next Happily Inc book, a Christmas book that will be out next year. No title yet. It has all of the humor and heartfelt emotion readers love in my booksโ€”plus Christmas! I invited members of the Susan Mallery All Access group on Facebook (www.facebook.com/groups/susanmalleryallaccess) to suggest random items for me to incorporate into the story. When the book comes out next year, Iโ€™ll share a scavenger hunt list with my readers so they can find the objects as they read. Itโ€™s just a fun way for me to stay connected to my readers as I write.ย

Who is an author you draw inspiration from?

Years ago, the fabulous Debbie Macomber suggested to me that I stop writing series about families, and start writing series about people who live in the same town. That advice was the inspiration for my Foolโ€™s Gold series, which led to my Happily Inc series, as well. Iโ€™ll always be grateful to Debbie for that.

What is your favorite place to read a book?

At home with my feet up on the sofa and a cat curled in my lap.

Who is a book character youโ€™d be best friends with?

Each of my heroines is someone Iโ€™d be friends withโ€”after all, I spend months with them, so I want them to be people I enjoy hanging out with. As for best friends, Iโ€™ll go with Ellen Fox, heroine of The Friendship List, which will come out next year. Ellen had me laughing all the way through the book. Sheโ€™s blunt and smart and would drop everything to help someone she loves.

Sheโ€™s a single mom who got pregnant in high school. She had sex one time, got pregnant, and then… nothing. Sheโ€™s basically a virgin with a kid. But when she discovers what sheโ€™s been missing, she has no inhibitions. Her lack of filter was a source of constant amusement for me. Every day, I was excited to get back to work so I could spend time with her again. Such a fun book to write!

Pen & Paper or Computer?

Computer. I couldnโ€™t keep up with my thoughts with paper and pen. I type about 120 words per minute, so thatโ€™s easier for me. Hard on my wrists and hands, but easier on my brain.

Favorite decade in fashion history?

The 1980โ€™s.

KIDDING!!!!!

I am enjoying the fashion of today. I like that there really arenโ€™t any rules anymore, itโ€™s all about self-expression.

What is your signature drink?

A Starbucks latte. This time of year, pumpkin spice. Even though the baristas cannot, for the life of them, spell Susan.

What do you hope readers will experience or gain when reading Meant to Be Yours?

I hope Meant to Be Yours will be a happy escape for them, an entertaining break from the stresses of their daily lives. This is a book for readers who like to feel the sharp pings of emotionโ€”and the release of laughter with a guaranteed happy ending.

How did you get into writing?

I was in college studying to be an accountant. It wasnโ€™t exciting, but it was practical. I honestly didnโ€™t know that regular people could be professional writers. It seemed so exotic, somehow. I thought writers had to live in France and wear turtlenecks. I think I must have choked to death in a previous life because I canโ€™t stand wearing turtlenecks.

One day, I got a flyer in the mail from an adult education center called The Learning Tree, with evening classes people could take. These classes were not for credit and therefore were very impractical for a young woman carrying a full course load of university classes, and a newlywed trying to learn how to cook. But one of the classes caught my eye: How to Write a Romance Novel. Still, I thought, no time. I threw away the flyer. Eight weeks later, it came again. I threw it away again. Eight weeks later, there it was again, and I realized the woman wasnโ€™t going to teach the class forever.

So I signed up for the class, and I immediately fell in love. By week six, I knew this was what I was meant to do with my life. I made a deal with my then-husband. I gave myself two years to sell a book. If I didnโ€™t, then I would have to get a job. That was in May, and I sold my first book in August of that year. Best decision ever.

What inspired you to write Meant to Be Yours?

I loved the humor inherent in the idea of a thriller writer wanting to research weddings, and a wedding planner who wants to keep his darkness away from her brideโ€™s special day. Jasper is the kind of writer who does his research in tangible ways. Before he writes a fight scene, he blocks it out with his buddiesโ€”weapons and all. He wants to get the details right.

So when he decides to set his next book against the backdrop of a wedding, heโ€™s determined to get those details right, too. And the only way to do that is to be involved with a wedding from start to finish. But Renee is determined to keep any hint of darkness away from her brideโ€™s special day. Itโ€™s not an intellectual exercise to herโ€”itโ€™s someoneโ€™s wedding day, and that means something.

Itโ€™s just a humorous conflict that I thought would be a ton of fun to write. And it was!

Oh, and by the way, Jasper also decides that his detective character needs a love interest…so he needs someone to block out the kissing scenes with him, too. (Full confession: I do occasionally ask my husband for help with my research. ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

What drew you into writing romance?

Iโ€™ve been a romance reader since I was in middle school, and theyโ€™re still the books I enjoy the most. I love everything about them. I still get that intake-of-breath feeling when the characters first kiss. And when they finally overcome their obstacles and admit that theyโ€™re meant to be togetherโ€”thereโ€™s just nothing happier or more life-affirming.

If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?

I would love to sit down with Verity, Reneeโ€™s mother. But I canโ€™t tell you what I would ask her or why without spoilers, so Iโ€™ll just leave you with this: Verity has a very special talent that gives her an insight few people can claim. I would love to have this talent. Since I donโ€™t, Iโ€™d love to ask Verity to tell me what she knows.

What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

Iโ€™m active on Facebook, Instagram and Twitterโ€”but mostly on Facebook. I share book news on my main page, www.facebook.com/susanmallery. In the Susan Mallery All Access group, www.facebook.com/groups/susanmalleryallaccess, I share personal anecdotes and pictures, hold contests and play games. Itโ€™s a lot of fun, and everyone is welcome to join! (Unless youโ€™re some weird spammer guy who wants me to marry you. Ew.)

What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Stick with it. The writers who succeed are the ones who donโ€™t give up. Write every day. Experiment with different methods and techniques to find what works for you. Analyze successful books and try to figure out why they work, and then incorporate those lessons into your own writing. I found that screenwriting classes helped a lot with developing story structure.

What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

Always something new on the horizon! In 2020, Iโ€™ll release four brand new books: Sisters by Choice (a Blackberry Island novel), The Friendship List (a standalone), A Foolโ€™s Gold Wedding (a Foolโ€™s Gold romance), and the yet-to-be-titled Happily Inc Christmas romance.

The four young kids are put in even more dire situations this time around. The fourth novel in the Kids vs Nature series from author Karl Steam, the author does a great job of showcasing the dangers of survival and the importance of teamwork in the face of that danger.

The U.S. Piggy Bank by Karl Steam Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A new book for children to learn about the financial system of the United States and the current workings of it all has come to life in author Karl Steamโ€™s book โ€œThe U.S. Piggy Bankโ€.

The Synopsis

What is debt and how big is a trillion? These questions are explored as readers learn about the size of the nation’s debt. Despite all the negative numbers, this book manages to spin a positive message. It introduces a topic that normally causes division and uses it to promote hope and unityโ€”two American values that have served the nation well over the years.

Its hard not to gasp when a trillion is put into perspective. Fun size comparisons will captivate audiences just as they do in โ€œHow Much Is a Millionโ€ by Steven Kellogg and David M. Schwartz. The U.S. Piggy Bank does not stop there though. It introduces a topic that effects every U.S. citizen, allowing readers to feel a personal connection with the story.

Learning extensions are abundant with this book. Lesson ideas for math, social studies, and language arts are listed in the back, making it a great resource for classrooms and home learning environments. If youโ€™re looking for a gift that a teacher will use year after year, this is it.

The Review

This is a well researched, well written and enlightening read for young readers. Exploring the financial situation of the United States and presenting a positive spin on the future and a path forward, the author does a great job of laying out the facts about the current debt situation in our nation, how the system works, and how people can come together to make a stronger path into the future.

Explaining the value of a trillion dollars, showing off the math and logistics of a number that size, and delving into the historical, mathematical and language arts studies of this subject, the author has presented a book that young people can read on their own or be presented to in a classroom setting. The book even includes lessons and practices that can be used to further teach students the importance and honest truth of the financial system today.

The Verdict

This is a great read that educates people on an important subject and should be valued greatly. In an age where debt is expanding and the future of the nationโ€™s financial system is in the hands of young people today, it is important to find ways to educate and explore this subject in a way children will relate to, and the author has done that expertly. If you havenโ€™t yet grab your copy of โ€œThe U.S. Piggy Bankโ€ by Karl Steam today!
