Maybe Colours by Matthew Bennet Young Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Matthew Bennet Young takes readers on a journey through equality and acceptance through poetry and colour in the book “Maybe Colours”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Maybe Colours is a beautifully illustrated picture book with simple poetic text that encourages an understanding of the importance of equality and diversity using colour as a theme.

♥ Encourages children to express their experience and feelings

✓ Perfect gift for anyone that loves poetry and art.

★ Many teachers/schools have used the book as a template.

Children can write their own simple poem about their experience of colour and then enjoy illustrating it!

The content, illustration and layout are arranged to give a sense of space for reflection. Designed for adults and children to discuss their associations and experience of different colours, this book conveys that there are many different sources and shades of the ‘same colour’, (it’s not all black and white) and that every colour has its place and equal significance. Maybe Colours is a meditation on possibilities and was the basis of a course developed in Sweden to support and specifically promote a new EQ (emotional intelligence) curriculum in schools there.  Essentially Maybe Colours was written with a view to encouraging tolerance and understanding – the word “maybe” is a “pivot” for perspective-taking, enabling us to consider other possibilities for meanings, concepts and in real-life situations we can find ourselves in. Developing children’s abilities to consider alternative perspectives about sources of colour, associations with objects or animals has real-world applications: misunderstandings often occur when we do not consider alternative possibilities of meaning when engaging with other people. The active use of this word may help to prevent such misunderstandings and to encourage open-minded thinking.

The Review

The author did an incredible job of crafting a moving and memorable story in such a short amount of time. The theme of diversity and acceptance was beautifully displayed in the book, with simple yet thought-provoking poetry highlighting the many paths that each colour could take in life.

The imagery and tone of the book really did a great job of keeping readers invested in the author’s message. The beautiful blend of colour and abstract images helped give readers a sense of similarities and differences that makes up life itself and was the perfect way to teach children about equality for all.

The Verdict

Powerful, thoughtful, and engaging, author Matthew Bennet Young’s “Maybe Colour” is a must-read children’s book meets poetry and picture book. The balance of imagery and poetry really created a harmonic narrative, and while a short book overall, the message was quite impactful and the perfect way to illustrate our need to teach our future generations how to hold one another in much higher regard. The Review

This was a fun and spectacular read. The author did such an incredible job of crafting a narrative for children that was both entertaining and educational. The contrast of the warmth of the boat and captain in the imagery to the coolness of the ocean and environment itself in the illustrations really did a great job of drawing the reader into the narrative further.

Yet it was the author’s writing style that really captured my attention. The simple yet powerful story of adventure that came to life on the pages as a young girl became the captain of her own boat, sailing on the high seas and exploring the oceans was inspiring to read. The use of repetition, rhythm and even glossary terms for the educational purposes of learning about boating and the ocean as a whole was perfectly layered into the overall narrative.

The Verdict

Fun, light-hearted, and engaging, author Susea Spray’s “A Big Blue Boat” is a must-read children’s story and picture book. The memorable educational moments from this read and the attention-grabbing and beautiful artwork work well together to create an entertaining and heartfelt read. Toby, Toby, Worry Free by Lucinda Grapenthin Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young octopus must traverse the fears and worries of how his peers view him as his mother encourages him to learn to ride his bike in author Lucinda Grapenthin’s “Toby, Toby, Worry Free”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

When Toby is faced with learning to ride his bike so he can play with his friends, he begins to worry and worry and worry.

“What if I fall?” “What if other kids laugh at me?” “What if I can’t ride my bike?!”

Mommy pauses, attuning to his behavior. She accepts his emotions and calmly engages with him, encouraging his discovery of positive steps to solve this dilemma.

Toby learns a better way to manage his feelings by using his can-do thoughts. Now, he can have fun!

The Review

The balance of whimsical and wonder-like illustrations with the heartfelt and emotional storytelling and an underlying tone of confronting fears and stress in childhood made this book shine so brightly. The fast pace and steady rhythm of the narrative itself made for an easy read, perfect for children and the time they share with their parents when reading.

The character growth and theme of this narrative both fueled the heart of this children’s book. The heartfelt bond between Toby and his mother was emotional and did a great job of kindling the emotional depth of the reader with their child (or vice versa). The theme of confronting one’s fears, letting go of negative thoughts, and accepting that the fears exist while still pushing forward and acknowledging the ability to overcome those fears are all fantastic messages to impart to children as they grow up.

The Verdict

Captivating, heartfelt, and engaging, author Lucinda Grapenthin’s “Toby, Toby, Worry-Free” is a must-read children’s book. The wonderful imagery and thoughtful approach to the story’s theme made this a book any parent would be happy to read with their kid. If you haven’t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!

The Review

This was a brilliant and fun children’s read. The authors found a great balance between thought-provoking teaching moments in the narrative and fun and exciting illustrations to keep children invested in the story.

What stuck out to me about this story was both the educational moments the author took in developing otherworldly storylines to help teach children about different aspects of our own world’s society and the playful and fun way the authors introduce sci-fi story elements and themes into the narrative for younger readers to get engaged with. As a sci-fi fan, it was fun to see a new approach to the children’s book narrative that included some other genres like this.

The Verdict

Teddy Loses His Ears by Christine Milkovic Krauss (Illustration by Cierra Van Nes) Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young kitten suffers an injury and learns to find acceptance in author Christine Milkovic Krauss’s “Teddy Loses His Ears”.

The Synopsis

Teddy is a rescue cat who lost his ears from frostbite. Teddy has inspired a series of stories with his true-life adventures that share relatable messages of kindness and acceptance. Teddy hopes that his stories will raise awareness to the organizations that saved his life, and thousands of other animals’ lives every year.

The Review

This was such a heartwarming and memorable children’s book. Illustrator Cierra Van Nes does an amazing job of conveying the emotions and heart of this narrative through warm character artwork and cold yet inviting wintery settings. The story reads smoothly and adds a great sense of bonding between parents and their children as they read this book together.

The overall theme and message of the story are so heartfelt and emotional to read. The loss of Teddy’s ears showcases to children the need to love and accept those who may appear to be different from us because no matter what they are still the same people we’ve always known and cared for. As someone who is disabled physically and as someone who has had an injured pet in the past (a black lab with a permanently injured leg), it was fantastic to see such representation and a positive message conveyed in a beautiful way.

The Verdict

Memorable, heartening, and entertaining to read, author Christine Milkovic Krauss’s “Teddy Loses His Ears” is a must-read children’s book. A story of hope, of love, and of acceptance, the bond between parent and their child, as well as a pet and their families, is so expertly woven together and creates an overall beautiful reading experience that cannot be missed. Between Snow and Wolf by Agnes Domergue

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young girl raised on a snowy island by a protective father must venture out in search of him after he goes missing, and discovers a forest of spirits and wolves in author Agnes Domergue’s graphic novel and fairy tale novel, “Between Snow and Wolf”.

The Synopsis

What secret is hidden in the heart of the forest? Lila lives with her father on a snowy island. From a young age, he has protected her from a curse and a demon. One day when he is away for a longer period of time, Lila imagines him already a prisoner and decides to go looking for him. She then discovers a forest asleep under the snow, populated by enigmatic spirits and a white wolf.

Inspired by classic Japanese fairy tales, BETWEEN SNOW AND WOLF is a tale for young girls who seem to grow up too fast (in the eyes of their parents). Braving the world and facing your fears are lessons that never grow old. Mixing humor and drama in a lushly illustrated presentation, this book embraces the influence of Hayao Miyazaki, not just in its “kawaii” cute character design, but in the magical settings the character finds herself in.

Written by Agnes Domergue, a professional musician well known for her published volumes of haiku, this book has the lyrical qualities of a poem.

Advertisements

The Review

This was such an inspiring and heartfelt read. The Japanese mythology and artwork that was infused into this narrative were so amazing to read, as was the character growth and their interactions with one another. The characterization of each animal and the main characters was absolutely perfect, and I loved how even nature and the environment around us came alive and become their own characters, highlighting the importance of nature in our world.

What stood out to me was the theme of this narrative, as well as the stunning artwork. The vibrancy of the colors in this art, showcasing the stark contrast between the cold of winter and the warmth of spring, was so beautifully felt here. The theme of children eventually moving on into the world on their own, facing their fears, and discovering who they are and their place in the world was so creatively explored and melded the graphic novel and children’s book genres together so seamlessly.

The Verdict

A stunning, engaging, and breathtaking read, author Agnes Domergue’s “Between Snow and Wolf” is an absolutely incredible and must-read graphic novel and children’s story. A wonderful balance of iconic Japanese folklore, original character growth, and emotional storytelling make this the perfect winter read leading into the new year. Batman and Robin and Howard by Jeffrey Brown Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Two young boys find themselves becoming fast rivals after one joins a new school, and they compete to be the most athletic and most educated student in the class. Little does Howard know that the boy he’s competing against is Damian Wayne, son of Batman and known as the costumed hero Robin, in author Jeffrey Brown’s “Batman and Robin and Howard”.

The Synopsis

Sidelined by a crime-fighting field trip gone wrong, Damian Wayne must refocus his attention on his life as an average student and learning how to be a team player–especially when he meets his match in his new rival, Howard.

To Damian Wayne, there is nothing more important than protecting the streets of Gotham City as Robin. But when he makes a critical mistake while out on patrol, Damian finds himself benched. And what’s more, Damian’s dad, Bruce Wayne–a.k.a. Batman–decides that starting over in a new school will be just the distraction Damian needs from his superhero routine.

Certain that Gotham Metro Academy has nothing to teach him, Damian is completely unprepared for the challenge he finds in Howard–the smartest and most athletic kid in school. The boys’ rivalry is instantaneous and fierce…and both are sure only one of them can be the best in their class.

What follows is a funny story of rivalry, friendship, and mystery from bestselling author and illustrator Jeffrey Brown.

Advertisements

The Review

This was such a fun and humorous dive into the life of Damian Wayne. From the fumbling father/son relationship he has with Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, to the competitive nature and lone-wolf style mindset he has carried into every facet of his life, and even the detective mindset that he inherited from his father as he is forced to step up to help solve the mystery crimes surrounding soccer teams at schools. The inclusion of Batman lore and mythos into the children’s book narrative and style (as well as incredible children’s artwork), made this story feel equally balanced and engaging for both DC Fans and children’s book readers alike.

The balance with this humor and lore came with the educational and moral lessons that the story brought upon young readers. From showing how we often don’t get along with those who mirror our worst impulses and instincts, to finding common ground with frenemies and becoming friends instead, to finding balance and letting go a bit of the control we have over our lives, these themes and messages found in the relationship developed between Damian and Howard were amazing to watch unfold and would keep readers enthralled with the growing narrative.

The Verdict

A thoughtful, entertaining, and brilliant children’s read, author Jeffrey Brown’s “Batman and Robin and Howard”, the latest children’s book in association with DC Comics, is a must-read children’s book of 2021! A gripping and educational read, the book is filled with personal and warm imagery and does a great job of developing their characters so that readers are not only entertained but see themselves in the characters as well. The Review

This was a truly heartwarming read. The author crafted a beautiful story that showcased the true meaning of family, a belief that I’ve always felt in my own life. Blood doesn’t define family, but the bond and love we have for one another. The characters and emotions the author poured into the narrative made this theme come alive fully.

The plot point of adoption and how loved and included adopted children can be made to feel in their new homes was a great story. The message and theme not only are a great way for the author to share her daughter’s story, but to highlight the bond parents and their children can make with one another, making this the perfect read for children and their parents or parental figures.

The Verdict

Brilliant artwork, heartfelt emotional storytelling, and a bond that forms immediately between the author and the reader, author Jami Gabbard’s “Little Miss Raya’s Big Adventures: All About Me” is a must-read children’s book. The emotions and warmth that the characters and the narrative evoke in the reader, and the connective way the story bonds children with their parents, as well as giving representation to both children of color and adoptive children alike in this story, make this a children’s book that readers won’t want to put down.
