The Review
This was a truly heartwarming read. The author crafted a beautiful story that showcased the true meaning of family, a belief that Iโve always felt in my own life. Blood doesnโt define family, but the bond and love we have for one another. The characters and emotions the author poured into the narrative made this theme come alive fully.
The plot point of adoption and how loved and included adopted children can be made to feel in their new homes was a great story. The message and theme not only are a great way for the author to share her daughterโs story, but to highlight the bond parents and their children can make with one another, making this the perfect read for children and their parents or parental figures.
The Verdict
Brilliant artwork, heartfelt emotional storytelling, and a bond that forms immediately between the author and the reader, author Jami Gabbardโs โLittle Miss Rayaโs Big Adventures: All About Meโ is a must-read childrenโs book. The emotions and warmth that the characters and the narrative evoke in the reader, and the connective way the story bonds children with their parents, as well as giving representation to both children of color and adoptive children alike in this story, make this a childrenโs book that readers wonโt want to put down. The simple discoveries or even humorous mistakes often make for memorable moments in our childhood.
From wearing oneโs shirt inside out to being able to pull oneโs ears out and letting our imaginations run wild with dreams of using them to fly around, the authors and the illustrator, (Alice Antimie), really did a great job of highlighting the heartfelt and unique quality of childhood so many of us often forget. Moonbeam Childrenโs Book Award for Pre-Teen Fiction, Ebook (Bronze) 2019
The Review
A truly engaging and magical read, author Ryan Cowan has crafted a masterful tale of magic, mythology, and wonder in this brand new fantasy-driven childrenโs book. The story really shines through in this tale, giving readers new mythology between the world of magic and the world of humanity that brings all of the supernatural and magical creatures of lore into the forefront.
Rather than having a human falling into the world of magic and crafting a tale of discovery, the author does a great job of exploring a cast of characters well versed in the world of magic. What really stood out however was the authorโs ability to create a narrative that highlighted the in-class relationship between a teacher and a student as the teacher attempts to impart knowledge that will help the student grow into the roles they were meant to be in life.
The Verdict
This was a fast-paced, easy to read tale of supernatural entities, a clash between evil witches and good witches, and the impact magic has on two worlds as a rising witch discovers his unique abilities while a seasoned witch must find a way to stop an impending apocalypse. Over 20 beautiful, professional photographs of Donk as she prepares for, and then hikes, Mt. Washington.
The Review
In such a short read, the author does a great job of establishing a connection between the reader and the protagonist through not only great photography but artful storytelling. The book brings the story of this miniature donkey to life brilliantly, making the story flow at a reasonable pace for younger readers.
The use of photography over artwork was an inspired choice, as it allowed for more personal touches to the story than artwork may have. The story itself showcases the narrative that with hard work, training, and perseverance anyone can achieve their goals, including hiking and climbing Mount Washington for Donkey-Donk in this tale.
The Verdict
A well written, short yet impactful read, this is the perfect read for anyone who enjoys picture books and childrenโs narratives. Full of heart, joy and creativity, author Ellen F. A new book for children to learn about the financial system of the United States and the current workings of it all has come to life in author Karl Steamโs book โThe U.S. Piggy Bankโ.
The Synopsis
What is debt and how big is a trillion? These questions are explored as readers learn about the size of the nation’s debt. Despite all the negative numbers, this book manages to spin a positive message. It introduces a topic that normally causes division and uses it to promote hope and unityโtwo American values that have served the nation well over the years.
Its hard not to gasp when a trillion is put into perspective. Fun size comparisons will captivate audiences just as they do in โHow Much Is a Millionโ by Steven Kellogg and David M. Schwartz. The U.S. Piggy Bank does not stop there though. It introduces a topic that effects every U.S. citizen, allowing readers to feel a personal connection with the story.
Learning extensions are abundant with this book. Lesson ideas for math, social studies, and language arts are listed in the back, making it a great resource for classrooms and home learning environments. If youโre looking for a gift that a teacher will use year after year, this is it.
The Review
This is a well researched, well written and enlightening read for young readers. Exploring the financial situation of the United States and presenting a positive spin on the future and a path forward, the author does a great job of laying out the facts about the current debt situation in our nation, how the system works, and how people can come together to make a stronger path into the future.
Explaining the value of a trillion dollars, showing off the math and logistics of a number that size, and delving into the historical, mathematical and language arts studies of this subject, the author has presented a book that young people can read on their own or be presented to in a classroom setting. The book even includes lessons and practices that can be used to further teach students the importance and honest truth of the financial system today.
The Verdict
This is a great read that educates people on an important subject and should be valued greatly. In an age where debt is expanding and the future of the nationโs financial system is in the hands of young people today, it is important to find ways to educate and explore this subject in a way children will relate to, and the author has done that expertly. The award-winning childrenโs fantasy series returns in a grand fashion as Fawn finds herself facing a whole new danger: the outside world. The third book in the holiday series takes the story to all new heights in author Al E. Boyโs novel โFar and Yet So Near (The Adventures of Fawn #3)โ.
Far And Yet So Near is the exciting, award-winning third installment in The Adventures of Fawn, and finds the young reindeer and her faithful friends on yet another rescue mission. All of the adult reindeer suddenly fall under the control of a mysterious stranger, and mindlessly march off towards directions unknown. Fawn and company must trail the reindeer and try to bring them back home again.
After surviving dangers like ‘Hangnail Pass’ and the ‘Wandering Bridge’ the group are led to an underground cavern where they are confronted by the stranger, who intends to steal the reindeer team. Santa and Wajic turn up in the nick of time…and it looks like everyone is safe. But the stranger has a few tricks up his sleeve, and explosions unexpectedly rock the cavern as he makes good his escape. But not before he ‘reindeer-naps’ Fawn.
She soon finds herself a pet in an English manor house near London. Will Fawn ever return to the North Pole and Santa’s Village? Will anyone ever be able to find her? Did Santa, Wajic, Doctor Weather, Bunny and the others all perish in the explosions? What will become of Fawn? What will become of Christmas? Read “Far And Yet So Near” to find out!
The Review
While the book began with a lot of action and edge of your seat thrills, the novel overall felt much more personal and emotional than the previous novels in the series. The author did a marvelous job of focusing more on the emotional journey of Fawn, her parents, and everyone in Santaโs close-knit circle as they searched for the missing Fawn and fought to survive the initial attack. Along the way Fawn finds herself bonding with a young girl suffering from a terrible illness, and discovers that the two worlds she has lived in, (the human world and the magical world at Santaโs Village), may not be as incompatible as they once believed.
Readers will love delving into this story as characters backstories like the powerful and mysterious Wajic are explored when an old foe from his past comes back to haunt him and his makeshift family. The book also expertly explores Fawnโs journey as she grows up in her months away from her home, and showcases the heartbreaking affects of losing a child both in Comet and Vixenโs narrative and the story of the young girlโs parents whom Fawn has found herself bonding with.
The Verdict
Overall this was a well written, emotional and magical tale that solidifies the series as a new holiday favorite. An evenly paced read that focuses more on personal storytelling aspects rather than the larger than life magic of past novels, this story felt like the most connected the reader has ever been with Fawn, and brought a whole new element to the series that fans will love. The Review
This is a brilliant continuation of an award winning childrenโs fantasy series. The author does a great job of upping the ante in the series as readers are treated to an original and unique origin story unlike any other. Getting to explore the history of Santa was not only fun, but the story created in this novel was more detailed, more action-packed and had more twists and turns than any other origin story for the holiday figure.
A story of tragic losses, the past coming back to haunt the present, a perilous journey to save an iconic holiday hero, and tales of redemption make this story so engaging and hook the reader throughout the entirety of the story. Another evenly paced read, the novel does a great job of balancing the fantasy and magical elements of the novel with fantastic character building and interactions that make the story flow smoothly.
The Verdict
This is a brilliant sequel to a growing childrenโs fantasy series that redefines the Christmas season and the origins of Santa as a whole. The inclusion of Elven lore, the struggle for two very different worlds to find common ground and live in peace, and the pursuit of good and the will to do whatโs right make this an inspiring story of children and parents alike to enjoy with one another, and is a great new chapter in the holiday season genre.
