What a unique and compelling read! The author does a remarkable job of revealing the experiences and inner workings of the comic book shops of New England. The focus on each comic book owner’s way of running their stores and their approaches to both the business side of things and their passion for the industry made this book flow smoothly.

The heart of this book was in the passion for comic books that each owner shared and how they came to be in the comic book business as a whole. The love for these stories of horror, fantasy, nd science fiction and the different ways comics were bought over the decades was remarkable to witness across the pages of this book. The way some owners embrace new comics and the popularity of modern pop culture merchandise in their stores versus those who appreciate the classics and iconic comic books in general was so passionately written and insightful into this industry.

The Review

This was a powerful and captivating collection of short stories. The authors not only captured the tone and atmosphere of the original Vlada story perfectly but honed in on the gothic setting and tone of the original so well. The vIsceral horror and gritty imagery the authors utilized helped bring an almost cinematic quality to the style of writing in each story, and the haunting tone of these tales kept the reader invested in these narratives. 

To me, the beauty of this series lies in both the gender-bent aspect of the twists on these iconic stories and the homages to the original mythos that the authors kept in place to add to the wealth of new storytelling that occurred. The earliest stories held great callbacks to characters like Renfield and Van Helsing, while the origins of Vlada herself were great and compelling to read, and the spine-chilling nature of the vampire lore was captured in these stories so perfectly that the authors were able to expand on the vampire mythos much more and keep the reader invested as they did so.

The Verdict

Memorable, captivating, and entertaining, the anthology hit gothic horror series “Vlada: Tales of the Damned” is a must-read collection. The twists on these iconic characters and the quick pace of the stories allowed the reader to really connect to this universe in a powerful way and leaves the reader eager for more stories within the growing Vlada universe. A horror tale as iconic as the genre itself takes the story fans to know and love and gives it a gender reversed turn as readers take in the story that is Vlada, A Dracula Tale by author Chris Denmead.

The Review

This was such a fantastic twist on the iconic horror story. The author found the perfect chord of harmonious storytelling between classic scenes from the original Stoker version of the narrative and updated details from the author himself. The artwork that accompanies this read is stunning, taking on that iconic and classic gothic horror feel that felt so close to the original novel’s era while maintaining a more updated setting.

The obvious yet still engaging change to this narrative was the gender-reversed roles of many of the characters. Turning Vlad Dracula into Vlada was such an important new direction to take the character, exploring the dark yet seductive nature of the character and yet giving readers a host of powerful female heroines and villains to face off against in this retelling, making the narrative feel more alive. Even the inclusion of some new characters really elevated the drama and familiar yet still entertaining narrative. 

The Verdict

A mesmerizing, haunting, and delightfully chilling read, author Chris Denmead’s “Vlada: A Dracula Tale” is a must-read horror story that will delight those unfamiliar with the tale and yet engage with longtime fans of the lore of this narrative. The balance of nostalgia and updated horror and action and a twist ending to the narrative will leave readers eager to read more from this incredible author, and one can only hope we get more updated twists on iconic horror tales in the future.
