The Synopsis

A slave woman escapes with her infant daughter in the dead of winter then returns to the town she had escaped from to legally outwit her former master, winning freedom for her abused son. She then went on to fight for women’s rights and laid the groundwork for allowing women to vote. All the while, risking her life to help other slaves and abolish slavery. Amazingly, she wasn’t able to read or write but met with three presidents, hundreds of politicians, gave speeches to crowds all over the country, found jobs for freed slaves. She spoke in front of congress. Challenged the first desegregation laws and helped shape the future of America becoming a national hero during the Civil War.

America’s First Real Superhero nobody hears about,

The Traveler of Truth (•Sojourner Truth).

This is not the normal boring documentary about Sojourner Truth. This is real. Her personal story. Why she escaped. The people she met. The problems she had to overcome. How she became so intertwined into American History and why the nation loved her.

The Review

What a powerful and moving read. The author does an incredible job of writing in a way that feels transportive, taking the reader into the era and capturing the tension and the horrors that people endured before and after the end of slavery in the United States. The visceral nature of the events surrounding this period and the powerful imagery that brought this setting and period to life drove readers to understand and learn from the horrors of the past and recognize the work so many good people put into ending such a horrific act.

This novel’s heart rested in the protagonist’s phenomenal character development. The historical fiction arc given to the life of Sojourn Truth, and the acts of civil rights and battles for liberty she fought so hard for were significantly felt as the author brought their life to the page. The detail the author went into bringing the abuses and the struggles she and her family endured, from the earliest memory of being taken from her family as a child to fighting to save her children’s lives and so much more, made this reading experience both chilling and inspiring at the same time.

The Verdict

Remarkably written, thoughtful, and engaging, author Gee Monte’s “The Traveler of Truth” is a must-read historical fiction book. The depth of detail and the author’s ability to transport the reader to such a powerful and tumultuous time made this a novel readers won’t be able to put down, and will have them eager to read again. The Review

What an engaging and thoughtful approach to one of the United States’ most brutal and morally vital wars. The heartbreak and divide this book explores in the Civil War (before, during, and after the battles fought) lets the readers experience the tumultuous time in American history like never before. The imagery in the author’s writing style and the atmospheric nature of the writing draws the reader in, immersing the reader into the lives of those living through these harsh realities in a way that feels real and relatable all at once.

The story’s history, setting, and narrative became the heart of this story. The transformative nature of the stories being told and the morality around the central conflicts of this war became about allowing the reader to think critically about the war while also feeling the emotional stories being told. The first-person narrative each chapter brought and the variety of different people each chapter captured, from everyday Americans on both sides of the war to historical figures and more, gave a well-rounded conversation starter for readers to engage in surrounding the Civil War.

The Verdict

Remarkable, passionately written, and thoughtful in its approach, author Barry Robbins’s “Voices of the Civil War” is a must-read history meets historical fiction book. The blend of first-person storytelling to get into the mindset of Americans during this war and the use of speculation amongst scholars allowed the reader to get both an entertaining yet educational look at this era and, more than anything, feel the emotional and mental weight of what this war cost and what people were fighting for. Civil War (Chronicles of Rondure Book 1) by TC Marti Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young woman trained for years to be the best warrior and Smoke Master of her people must fight her way to expose her world’s corruption within it’s political system and go rogue against the very people who trained her in author TC Marti’s “Civil War”, the first book in the Chronicles of Rondure series.

The Synopsis

I was Culled at age five into the Bastille Military, the World of Rondure’s superpower…

…Having lived on-base for thirteen years, military life taught me two things: Mastery of the Smoke Element and to never apologize about using it on enemies.

Now that I’m awaiting a sure life sentence for the crime of exposing Bastille’s true crimes, they’ve left me with no choice. When they try to extradite me, I will call upon my Sword of Smoke and escape this predicament, using every combat technique they taught me against them.

Then, I’ll take it upon myself to finish a mission I started years ago; to unplug the People of Bastille and let them know who the real enemy is: their home nation and its Capital City of Paramount.

As I go rogue, every authority figure with money, power, and influence in the Bastille Empire will want me dead. Thanks to them, I’m one of the most powerful Smoke Masters in the World of Rondure. And I’m ready to break the spell the people of my nation have lived under for over a century.

Calling all fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender and George Orwell, Civil War features a strong heroine, with epic fantasy tropes bending into science fiction with dystopian and thriller elements, non-stop action, and stakes so high that Mina Hirai’s success or failure will set forth the fate of Rondure forever.

The Review

This was yet another fantastic entry into this beautifully written world of the author’s creation. The first book to connect the author’s original trilogy with the next trilogy in the Elementals of Nordica Saga, Civil War takes readers on a much more intimate journey than previous iterations of this series had done. Focusing instead on a first-person narrative, the story shows one young woman’s fight to escape a deadly prison sentence after learning of her government’s betrayal, and the fight to lead an insurrection to liberate the people of the government’s negative influence. The same balance of sci-fi and dystopian settings with the fantasy elements of the characters and the mythos overall made this such an impactful story to dive headfirst into.

The protagonist was definitely the driving force behind this narrative. The author’s ability to craft a more intimate and emotional narrative from the view of Mina Harai was a brilliant call, as it allowed a more personal view of the chaos and corruption Rondure was experiencing and the painful fight those who saw the corruption had to endure to reveal these dark truths. The connections she made, the horrors she was both witnessed and experienced, and the heroism she showed made her arc so engaging and the world-building and mythos as a result much more captivating.

The Verdict

Mind-blowing imagery, entertaining, and brilliantly written, author TC Marti’s “Civil War” is a must-read novel of 2022 for fans of sci-fi, dystopian, and fantasy-driven action-adventure narratives. The rich mythos that was expanded upon and explored in this narrative was amazing to read, and the personal development of one of the world’s heroes made this a stunning story to get lost in.
