What a genuinely thoughtful and engaging read. The author does an incredible job of presenting a children’s story that both entertains and informs young readers. While infusing the narrative with humor and heart through Mark’s friendships and adventures in building up his lemon stand business, the author also takes the step to begin educating young readers on the world of business and finances.
Using Mark’s story, the author can introduce concepts about business and entrepreneurship, such as expenses and profits, investing in your business, going into debt, and so much more. The author did a great job of balancing this educational narrative with rich character dialogue and interactions that made the book feel relatable and entertaining.

Heartfelt, engaging, and memorable, authors A.D. Williams and Kendal Fordham’s “Lemons and More Lemons” is a must-read children’s book. The Review
This was a truly insightful read. The author did a wonderful job of writing in a way that both experts in finance and everyday readers would be able to understand and relate to. The author’s personal background at the start of the book not only inspires the reader but showcases the extensive training and experience that brought these strategies to life and led to a well-researched book.
The balance the author struck between financial stability and wealth development was great to see, as was the way in which the author defined wealth. Rather than focus solely on numbers and figures, the author showed strategies like making a spending plan or how to create an emergency fund and also showed the biggest differences and connections between income and financial stability. The way the author honed in on side hustles and passive income really spoke to me and will speak to so many who are seeking ways of improving their family’s financial situations altogether.

One of the things that immediately stood out to me as a reader was the accessibility of the subject matter. Personally, finances and investment, as well as cryptocurrency, have always been a mystery to me, and finding a means of connecting the average reader, such as myself, to these industries has always been a challenge. Still, the author does a marvelous job of writing in a way that explains the intricacies of cryptocurrency and relates to the reader in the process.
The insight and detail the author goes into is brilliantly laid out. Not only does the author go into managing one’s portfolio and the reasons one should invest, but also what goes into trading and the different cycles in the market overall. The strategies and step-by-step guide give readers a blueprint to success while cautioning readers on all the risks involved, creating the perfect balance.

Yet, it was the heart that was poured into this narrative that made the story so gripping. The memoir proved to be more about the trials and tribulations that the author faced both in their personal and professional life rather than a linear tale of the world of Wall Street, and this allowed the reader to connect and fully feel the emotional weight of the author’s life experiences. The tension and heartbreak the author’s life touches upon and how she overcame tragedy to become the person she is today send a sad yet uplifting message that readers can resonate with powerfully.

Interview with Author Lori Van Dusen
1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?
I’ve always had a connection to the page. I believe writing regularly helps me be more creative and also helps flesh out ideas. I’ve been writing regularly since university. I’ve contributed a number of white papers to my industry journals, write out every speech I’ve ever delivered and journal daily as a way to relieve stress and organize my thoughts. I will admit though, I’d never considered myself a writer with a capital W, and certainly never appreciated how hard it was to write a book.
2) What inspired you to write your book, Running with Grace?
I began writing Running with Grace as a personal journal to help with my healing process from the unexpected loss of my husband. When I lost my mom, just a short time later, I wished she had captured her life story for me before she passed away from cancer. I miss her every day, and thought if I had her with me on the page, it would be such a comfort.
I started the project as a way to capture my life’s stories for my sons, and as I shared it with people, including my sons, they all encouraged me to collect the stories into a book to publish them.
3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?
Resilience, for sure. I am hoping the book inspires people to find their inner strength and embrace moving through all the things that happen to them, both the good and the horrific. I don’t think you don’t need to go through unspeakable tragedy to be wise, but as I look at my life now, I realize that I am a much wiser and more thoughtful person for going through the loss of my husband and mother.
If my book helps people even get through one day a little lighter, then I think it will have been worthwhile.
It’s been so gratifying to me to see the reviews from people who have read the book. Running with Grace is a Wall Street Journal bestseller and been praised for its “emotional power” by Kirkus Reviews and Readers’ Favorite describes it as “a story of triumphs and defeats inspiring readers to never give up.”
4) What drew you into this particular genre?
I never thought I would write a memoir. I had been toying with writing a book of business lessons from a woman in finance and I had even began an outline before my husband died.
After my husband died, I started to believe there had to be a reason all these tragic things had happened to me, and that I wanted to share the lessons that I had learned. It’s such a deeply personal book that the only way I thought to reach people was to write it as a memoir. My individual stories became chapters with the thread of resilience tying them all together.
5) If you could sit down with any character in your book (apart from yourself!), what would you ask them and why?
Without a doubt, my grandfather. I have so many questions for him that as a child I would have never thought to ask. I would love to learn more of his story–about his upbringing and how he became the person of such deep integrity. I’d also love to know what it really felt like when as a man in his middle age he became essentially the father to twin babies. I can’t imagine that was easy, but I never felt anything but love and support from him.
6) Has there been a social media site in particular that has been the most helpful in developing your readership?
LinkedIn has been hugely beneficial for me. Not only is it the only social media site I personally spend time on, but I’ve found the connections I’ve made to be richer and more fruitful. LinkedIn recently connected me to a podcast series, that invited me to do a live chat for their subscribers. To support the event, they purchased books as well as interviewed me. LinkedIn hasn’t been overwhelmed by the noise of the other social media platforms, yet. And I am hoping it stays that way.
7) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?
Find a great editor. No one writes a book alone. The book writing process is much more difficult than I expected. I independently published and invested in professionals to guide me through what feels very much like the wild west process.
I also suggest an aspiring writer assemble a group of trusted beta readers who will give candid feedback. My beta readers were incredibly helpful, especially at identifying some of the business discussions that were too insider baseball for a wider audience. Every writer (and person really) has inherent biases and a diverse group of outside readers can spot them for you. Include people who don’t know you personally to get the most objective feedback.
8) What does the future hold in store for you? Are any new books/projects on the horizon?
If readers learn anything from the book it is that the old Yiddish adage “Man Plans and God Laughs” is true. It’s futile to control the future. The only thing you can control is your actions in the present. My life has played out in no way that I had ever envisioned and my hope is that this book will introduce me to an audience outside the finance community as the message is really relevant to women and men everywhere.

This was a heartwarming and educational children’s book. The author was able to bring together lighthearted imagery and illustrations through this book to help illustrate the themes and message behind the narrative in a way that felt very inviting and engaging to the reader. The way the author was able to maintain that imaginative nature to the overall story while still balancing that with the knowledge being given to the children reading this book was incredible.
This story shined best when the author’s lessons being taught to the children were on display, and the fun illustrations really drew the reader into the story and what was being taught perfectly. The way this story appeals to both a child’s desire to learn and grow and a parent’s desire to bond and share that learning experience with their child was great to see come through on the page and made this a memorable reading experience.

The Review
One of the first things that stood out to me was how much the book honed in on the ways in which women are impacted by the financial world and how women are treated in the world of finances as a whole. Like so many areas of life, finances have been deemed “male-dominated” by so many people over the years. Far too often women are overlooked or put aside by men when it comes to how households handle their financial situations. The relatability of the author’s writing and the realistic tone the experiences the author deals with take will strike a chord with many readers, especially women.
The other thing that really stood out to me was the author’s approach to finances overall. Rather than writing in a way that sounds like a financial advisor, the author approaches this from an educational point of view, blending personal experiences with the lessons learned from those experiences. The emphasis is put on everything from being open to learning about the way money works and the importance of investments to increase one’s wealth, to focus on what you can control financially and the impact taking control of one’s finances can have on other areas of life made this book stand out in a unique way.
The Verdict
Memorable, educational, and thought-provoking, author Kalee Boisvert’s “Making Money Your Thing” is a must-read nonfiction book on finances and empowerment. 1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?
I’m a long-time sales executive in the technology space. That’s how I’ve made a living for the past 30-plus years. But, deep down inside, I’m really a storyteller. Whether it’s a presentation to a large group, a barstool conversation with a customer, or just hanging out with friends, I like to tell stories. Usually, they’re humorous. Occasionally, they’re insightful. Sometimes, they’re both. I hope that book falls into the “both” category.

2) What inspired you to write your book?
There’s a famous quote from Toni Morrison that goes like this, “If there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.” I’ve always wanted to read a book that accurately captured what I’ve experienced in my career. I felt that readers would enjoy the people, passion, camaraderie, customer interactions, and overall craziness associated with hitting a revenue goal, chasing the big deal, or being for sale, especially if I did it in a humorous way.
3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?
I hope that readers gain a better understanding of the salesperson-buyer relationship and, hopefully, a better appreciation of it. Business people are almost always portrayed negatively in books, movies, and TV shows, especially salespeople. It’s a common trope to show salespeople as either smart but devious or affable morons. This has not been my experience. I’ve interacted with thousands of buyers and salespeople over my career and have found the great majority of them to be intelligent, honest people.
One other theme that I’d like for readers to see is to always find the humor in things. The characters in my book deal with a lot of turmoil in a short period of time but are always laughing together every step of the way. That should feel authentic to every salesperson I’ve ever met.
4) What drew you into this particular genre?
I find what I do for a living to be fascinating. I love it and really thought readers who were unfamiliar with my world would love it as well. I confided to friends that I wanted to write a book that described the process of running a sales organization with the same level of passion and detail that Tom Clancy uses in describing the inner workings of a submarine because I think it is every bit as intriguing.
5) If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?
I want to sit down with Joseph Whitehorn. Every other character in the book is very familiar to me from my years of experience running technology sales teams, so I’ve already had the pleasure of spending time with many similar people. I find the backstory of Joseph Whitehorn to be fascinating, especially since this year marks the 100th anniversary of the first casualty from the Osage Indian Murders. I love his blend of purpose, focus, and his hidden humor that emerges as the story progresses.
6) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?
As a business person, I have the most extensive following on Linked-in, so that has been the best outlet for me. I also use Facebook and Twitter and would expect those two platforms to grow in importance to me in the future.
7) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?
The two obvious answers are to read more and write every day. That’s the recommendation from every reputable source, and I agree with that wisdom. The best way to get better at something is to do it, so writing daily helps. I would suggest that when you read other author’s work, read with a purpose. Notice the things you like, such as descriptions, dialog tags, POV choices, story structure, etc. Take notes and use them as inspiration for your own work.
Those are the two things that everyone will tell you. Now, I’ll give you some advice that few people will give to you. My book is filled with humor, and I found this advice from Neal Simon quite helpful. I saw him on 60 Minutes, where the interviewer asked him, “Do you laugh at your own work.” He answered that he does the first or second time he reads it, but after that, he doesn’t because he already knows the joke. He remembers it was funny, though, and that is the key. As you proof a chapter for the 50th time, the funny lines are no longer funny to you. You’ll be tempted to pull them or change them. Don’t do that! If it was funny when you wrote it, it will be funny for your readers the first time they read it. That advice may seem blindingly obvious, but when you are deep into the editing process and questioning everything you’ve written, it isn’t.
8) What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?
I just released Surfing with the Bishop and will focus on promoting the next few months. After that, I’ll see what inspires me. I’ve already got some thoughts on future projects but want to get more reader feedback before I lock in on anything. The author does a great job of really laying out the concept of banking systems, credit, and how our finances are impacted through education and detailed lessons throughout this book. The way the author interweaves their own experiences throughout their life and the way so many of us are introduced to debt through credit cards and difficulty finding reasonably paid work after education was such a great way to open up this road, and the deep dive the author took into the history and modern impact of finances on the U.S. financial system was thought-provoking.
The way the author writes is what really sold this book to me. Unlike so many financial books that try to show tricks or methods for accruing money or become self-help in nature, this book is written in a way that feels more hands-on educational instead. The layout and honest way the author speaks and integrates his personal experiences really helped someone like me, who is not financially education-forward, to understand and grasp the lessons the author was imparting.
The Verdict
A thoughtful, insightful, and memorable read, author Steven J. Spence’s “Money Plain and Simple” is a must-read non-fiction book of 2021, and a contender for best book on finances for the year on my site. The engaging way the author relays the narrative and sets out to show readers how big banking and wealthy elites have secured their financials through manipulation of the market was something we all should take into account in our future finances.
