Th Synopsis

“The Virginia City Affair” is the seventh book in the “Lancer; Hero of the West” series and is the most aggressive to date. Our hero heads to the silver fields of Nevada to help an old friend, only to learn he’s up against a killer on a mission.

As justified in his mind as the killer’s mission may be, Lancer still finds himself caught between right, wrong and indifferent. When an old calls upon Lancer to save his family from a killer bent on revenge, Lancer answers the call as always. This time however, he learns he can’t always trust his friends. Lancer also learns someone else from his past is waiting for him; a woman from very long ago.

Plot twists, good detective work, old connections and a little pure luck mixed with revenge in the silver fields of Nevada. Another Lancer adventure to keep you glued to your seat.

The Review

The author did an incredible job crafting a new narrative for protagonist Lancer that felt personal and action-packed. The reader will immediately be drawn in when the protagonist begins interacting with Wyatt Earp in the aftermath of the O.K. Corral gunfight. Trading Tombstone for Virginia City, the wildness the West had to offer in this era, and the imagery in the author’s writing style allowed these infamous sites to come to life on the page.

The unique character development in this book was incredible. From the strong yet vulnerable protagonist with a penchant for justice to the sudden loss of an old flame and the corrupt system for which he must fight, the reader is engaged with the hero’s journey. The personal nature of the story and the shocking revelations that this plot held allowed the reader to feel a sense of mystery that will stick with readers long after the book ends.

Interview with Author Michael Dunn

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

I’ve loved writing for as long as I can remember. One of my first memories of writing was when I was ten. I wrote a story about racism that involved a child driving a bulldozer over the home of his racist tormenters. My teacher was horrified by the homicidal implications of my story and thought I might be a budding serial killer. So, she called my parents in for a meeting to discuss my mental state. My parents, bless their hearts, laughed and told her they were proud of me, and that they thought my theme and content were both appropriate and commendable.

Advertisements

What inspired you to write your book?

  • I had originally intended to write about a little-known piece of American history called the Great Upheaval, a massive strike wave that erupted in the summer of 1877, in which at least 100 workers were killed by police and national guards nationwide. It spread from New York to Louisiana, and west, to California, with uprisings in several towns. Armories were looted. Black and white workers united in New Orleans, Louisville, Galveston, and in Saint Louis, where they took over management of city services, and called it the Saint Louis Commune, after the Paris Commune of 1871. But I soon realized this was way too big for a single book. And as I did the research, I discovered that just a few weeks before the Great Upheaval began, twenty innocent Irish miners were hanged in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania—ten in a single day. It was the second largest mass execution in U.S. history. They were convicted of murder, accused of being terrorists from a secret organization called the Molly Maguires. Dozens more were imprisoned. All were union activists. And there is no evidence that an organization called the Molly Maguires ever existed in the U.S. So, I decided to do a trilogy, with the first book, Anywhere But Schuylkill, telling the story of Mike Doyle, one of the accused Molly Maguires who got away.
Smiley Campaign

What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

  • I didn’t write this book to be didactic. For me, reading and writing are fun, and that was why I wrote the book. But in the process, I did hope to right an historical wrong. Arthur Conan Doyle’s final Sherlock Holmes novel, Valley of Fear (1915), the 1970 Sean Connery film, Molly Maguires, and a majority of the academic texts about the Molly Maguires and the miners’ union of that era, were based on Allan Pinkerton’s own work of fiction, The Molly Maguires and the Detectives (1877), which he falsely marketed as nonfiction. These works universally treat the Molly Maguires as an actual Irish terrorist organization, which conspired to murder mine owners and scabs, despite the fact that there is no evidence that such an organization ever existed in the U.S., other than the claims of Pinkerton, who had been hired by the coal companies to disrupt and destroy the union. So, there’s that. But I also hope readers will find beauty and inspiration in the characters’ struggles.

What drew you into this particular genre?

  • I love history, especially labor history and the history of social movements. I’ve been blogging and writing nonfiction on these themes for years now. And I also enjoy reading historical fiction. But I really wanted to write the story of the Molly Maguires, from their own perspective, the story of impoverished immigrants and first-generation Americans, persecuted for their ethnic and religious identity, struggling to support their families during the worst depression the country had known, trying to collectively organize against one of the most powerful corporations of the era: the Reading Railroad. Plus, fiction can reveal the truths that reality obscures, to paraphrase Emerson. So, historical fiction seemed the perfect genre.

If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?

  • I would like to talk to Da, about the antidraft protests he was involved in during the Civil War. I’d like to know if there were many others, like him, who saw the war as a fight between two opposing factions of the ruling class, rather than as a fight against slavery, and tyranny, as many of the German immigrants saw it.
Take a Food Journey Around the World!

What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

  • I’m not sure yet. I do have an Author Takeover on Facebook on January 15, with the Historical Fiction Club. You should check it out. I’ll be posting eight short pieces throughout the day. I’ll be giving away free copies of my book. And it’ll be a fun way to get to know about me and my writing, ask me questions, and maybe even learn a little working-class history. To participate, go to the Historical Fiction Book Club Facebook page on Jan 15: https://www.facebook.com/groups/historicalfictionbookclub

What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

  • First, I’d tell them to do their homework. Learn something about the craft before embarking. I didn’t. I was super naïve going into it. I thought, Hey, I’m good at telling stories and I read a lot. Of course, I can write a novel. Plus, the actual facts were so fascinating, I thought the story would write itself. But I had no training in fiction writing. I made a lot of mistakes. My first draft was terrible. The side characters were one-dimensional. There were no emotional arcs. The subplots weren’t fleshed out enough. I didn’t provide enough sensory details. I had to go back and take courses, find mentors, read a lot about the craft. Consequently, it took me nine years from when I first started working on this project to the time when it was actually published. Of course, I was also working full time, and being a father. So, that also made it take longer.
  • Second, I’d tell them to learn to embrace the editing process. No one, except maybe Kafka, churns out a finished product on the first draft. The editing and rewriting are the most time-consuming parts of the process. You could end up rewriting the entire thing 5-10 times before it’s really done. If you don’t have resilience and perseverance, and an enjoyment of this process, you might have a hard time producing a good quality book. That said, I really do enjoy the editing and rewriting. It’s a lot of fun trying to get all the pieces to fit together artfully.

What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

  • The Molly Maguire mass hanging that occurred in 1877, the second largest mass execution in U.S. history, is the opening scene of the next book in my Great Upheaval Trilogy: Red Hot Summer in the Big Smoke. The main character is Mike Doyle’s kid sister, Tara. It takes place in Pittsburgh, during the Great Upheaval strike wave, where much of downtown was burned to the ground, and where 20 strikers were gunned down by soldiers. I’m about halfway through the first draft. And then it will be on to the third and final book in the series. Not sure yet about the title. But it will take place in Saint Louis.

Michael Dunn writes Working-Class Fiction from the Not So Gilded Age. “Anywhere But Schuylkill,” is the first in his Great Upheaval trilogy. A lifelong union activist, he has always been drawn to stories of the past, particularly those of regular working people, struggling to make a better life for themselves and their families. Stories most people do not know, or have forgotten, because history is written by the victors, the robber barons and plutocrats, not the workers and immigrants. Yet their stories are among the most compelling in America.

In this alternative history story, a Viking King and his band of broken warriors head to new lands in search of something more than a kingdom in author Brent Olson’s “Between the Helpless and the Darkness”.

The Synopsis

HARALD SIGURDSSON, King Harald Hardrada of Norway, King of the Vikings, was born to rule. He embraced that birthright, dominating his world with the strength in his arm and the power of his will. In an instant, one brutal mistake and a shattering wound took all he valued from him.But what if . . .Harald Sigurdsson fled his disgrace with a band of equally broken warriors still holding tight to his leadership. They ventured West, to Iceland, Greenland, into the darkness, to a land known only through legends and lies. A land with no need of a king, no room fora ruler. A land where a king could hope to become something more. This enthralling, thought-provoking story begins a thousand years ago on a battlefield outside York, England, and then moves across the North Atlantic to Iceland and beyond. Brent Olson’s biggest, boldest, and best book yet is a stunning work of alternative history. By moving the path of one arrow one inch, Olson has achieved an entire new script for the world.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was a vibrant and captivating historical fiction novel. The exploration of Norse culture and the history of King Harald was fascinating to read, as the novel explored a time and alternate history that shows what the man behind the legend would have done had he survived his final battle. The atmosphere and pacing of the novel were captivating, as the story showcased this unique culture both in victory and defeat.

The character development of this book was incredible. The complexity of Harald as a character, both the legendary warrior others viewed him as and the flawed man beneath the legend, made this an in-depth and memorable story. The concept of Norse warriors and people arriving in what would later be North America and encountering the continent’s indigenous people was thought-provoking and kept the reader engaged in this book’s more creative and personal storytelling.

A young woman must wrestle with her family and her destiny in author Donna D. Conrad’s “The Last Magdalene: Book One of the Magdalene Chronicles”.

The Synopsis

The Last Magdalene does for the New Testament what The Red Tent did for the Old Testament.

The temple of Asherah has existed in Jerusalem for hundreds of years, disguised as a benevolent society for widows and orphans. Within the sheltering walls, priestesses are taught to honor the goddess through rites of passion passed from mother to daughter and from priestess to priestess. Into this world, Miriam of Bethany, is born.

Miriam longs to become The Magdalene, High Priestess of Asherah, as her mother and grandmother before her, but learns she is to marry an obscure rabbi from Galilee, Yeshua bar Yosef. Determined to control her own life, she runs away and is brutally attacked in the streets of Jerusalem. Broken in body and spirit, she resigns herself to her fate.

Yeshua, hailed as the Messiah, teaches love and acceptance, and places Miriam in the forefront of his followers. Together they find the courage to face the hostility of the priests and the brutality of Roman occupation. But Rome is a power unlike any the world has known, and Rome deals harshly with those who oppose its rule.

The Last Magdalene is an exquisite story of passion and love, and the lasting power of one woman’s voice which refuses to be silenced.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

The author really did an incredible job of creating a wholly unique and engaging story while also leaning into the history and culture of the narrative. The story captured a time when the concept of gods still held, and getting to witness both the beliefs of this ancient civilization and the politics and inner workings of life within the temple made this such a compelling story.

Yet the family dynamics around the protagonist and the themes of fate, sacrifice, and our connection to those around us ultimately played a significant role in the protagonist’s journey. The emotional journey that the protagonist had will resonate deeply with readers as she confronts her place within the only life she’s ever had and the destiny that awaits her.

The Verdict

Tense, heartfelt, and engaging author Donna D. Conrad’s “The Last Magdalene” is a must-read political and spiritual historical fiction meets women’s fiction novel. The shocking twists in the protagonist’s story and the detailed imagery in the author’s writing made this a compelling read. This was such an incredibly powerful and gripping narrative. The author did a fantastic job of creating an equilibrium that made the story’s political and supernatural elements. The book immediately sets the stage in the opening chapter, creating a haunting atmosphere rich with imagery and tension that instills a sense of mystery in the reader immediately.

Western silver heiress Val Mackle DeVere (Mrs. Roderick W.) agrees to “sit” for a portrait for her beloved Roddy, only to stumble on a scene of bloody, grisly homicide at an art gallery.

Like a figure from Pompeii, the dead Newport gallery manager screams in silence, his hands like claws clutching at a gilt frame pulled down over his head and shoulders while blood darkens his cream-colored suit.

Impulsive, Val reaches for the murder weapon and will find herself suspected, shamed, and shunned as she seeks the killer while learning yet again a lesson taught by Cornelius Vanderbilt IV: “No city on earth is as hostile to outsiders as Newport.”

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was a fun and engaging historical fiction meets mystery drama. The author found the perfect balance in the story between examining “high society” within communities such as Newport and honing in on the narrative’s mystery and thriller aspects. The creative way the author infused drink recipes into the narrative for readers to enjoy through one of the main characters was also inspired, as it allowed the reader to really become invested in the story.

The heart of the narrative rests in the solid historical accuracy of how society and the world viewed women and their role in that era, with the solid and engaging character growth of the protagonist and those around her. The setting and imagery in the author’s writing highlighted this time period well, and the way the protagonist has to battle her way through both suspicion and social shame to regain her status and catch a killer in the process will have readers enthralled with this novel.

So, he takes a job with a union leader, who’s also a gangster, while secretly courting his daughter. Now the gang leader, cops and rival gang all want him dead.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was a brilliant coming-of-age historical fiction novel. The author does a perfect job of capturing the chilling realities of the era, from the brutal and bloody nature of life as a miner to the hardships of working-class Americans and immigrants and the freestyle nature of crime in small, rural towns. The imagery the author utilizes in their writing really brings the grime and visceral setting to life effortlessly in this narrative.

To me, the author’s exceptional detail in both the history and the character development made this a remarkable story. The breathtaking yet shocking imagery helps elevate the culture and history of that era and the protagonist’s struggle both with his family and the people he becomes involved with when looking to help support his family after the tragic loss of the head of their household. The truth of his loss, as well as the themes the author explores in this era, from the racism and addiction that was growing during this time to the corruption of big corporations against middle-class America, made this a compelling story.

Memorable, heartfelt, and captivating author Michael Dunn’s “Anywhere but Schuylkill” is a must-read historical fiction meets coming-of-age story. The Synopsis

The highly anticipated conclusion in the Destiny historical fiction trilogy delivers unexpected twists linking the World War I era Armenian saga with a present-day search for ancestors and cultural harmony. In the waning years of the Ottoman Empire, true Armenian family stories deliver a slice of life reflection on the violent and volatile times that required sincere bonds of family and friendship, risk taking, and unfathomable courage to live.

This fast-read historical novel weaves human strength and mercy into the fabric of unspeakable horrors and political terror. “Destiny of Daring… Never Forget” completes the Gulumian story of extraordinary human compassion and the will to survive. As the Armenian saying reveals, “You cannot escape from destiny.”

While helpful for background, having read Books 1 and 2 is not essential to read Book 3.

The Review

This was a compelling and thought-provoking read. The author did such an inspiring and heartfelt job of bringing the story of this family to life, and the way the author was able to mesh the stories of previous entries in the series to a brand new narrative that hones in on the heart of the story, which is all about family, connection, and culture all blended into one.

The heart of this narrative proves to be the story’s relatability overall. The backdrop of the tragedy and cruelty of the Armenian Genocide during WWI by the Ottoman Empire is a shocking connection to the modern-day horrors of the Middle East for the innocent lives being lost daily. Yet the author’s heart and compassion in the narrative here give this reader hope for a brighter future tomorrow.

About the Author

Coming November 1, 2023, is the finale in The Destiny Trilogy. “Destiny of Daring: Never Forget,” which brings more unexpected twists in telling the story of the author’s Armenian family roots from the days of the waning Ottoman Empire during World War I. While reading Books 1 & 2 provides a hauntingly powerful and family-focused foundation, it is not essential. The historical fiction will be released in paperback and eBook formats, with the audiobook to follow. Cathy Burnham Martin’s first published attempt at writing happened in Grade 5, when her poem was featured in the local newspaper. That was back when her parents refused to let her have the then-popular Chatty Cathy doll, stating that one chatty Cathy in the house was more than enough. Though poetry took a back seat, she has since driven her writing and blabbing proficiencies along a highly eclectic career path through recruiting, acting, marketing, broadcasting, and even bank organizing.

This professional voiceover artist, journalist, corporate communications geek, and dedicated foodie earned numerous awards as a television news anchor. She acknowledges that her broadcasting skills enjoyed extremely humble beginnings, as she often appeared in the rows of children watching cartoons and playing games like “Name the States” and “Simon Says” on WMUR-TV’s “Uncle Gus Show.” As an adult, she has written, produced, and hosted dozens of groundbreaking documentaries, TV specials, and news reports, ranging from the Moscow Super Power Summit and the opening of the Berlin Wall to extensive coverage of New Hampshire’s First-in-the-Nation Presidential Primaries.

A born storyteller of Eurasian descent, Cathy showed questionable promise as she made up ghost and crime stories for weekly elementary school Show & Tell sessions, including one that sounded so real that local police were summoned to interview the imaginative first grader. Such antics led to her first acting role, when she proudly played Peter Rabbit in a neighborhood production. It turns out she got the role because the older children wanted to avoid being the kid who’d get spanked for tearing their shorts while escaping under the farmer’s wire fence in every performance. She landed future roles more admirably, and remains a member of the Actors Equity Association, media coach, and business speaker, including status as a Professional Member of the National Speakers Association since 1995. Cathy Burnham Martin has been dubbed the “The Morale Booster.”

In her early educational path, she frequently arose as a class clown and a challenge for her teachers. At their retirement celebration, her team of kindergarten teachers announced that Cathy had been both the most creative and the most challenging student in their 30-year-career. A perfect twist of fate has found Cathy enjoying adjunct college faculty work, teaching persuasive public speaking and communications. She proved to be a much better-behaved student when she earned a Master of Science in Corporate and Organizational Communications at Northeastern University in 2009, where she also received the highest academic honors.

Her parents’ insistence in extensive involvement in the community invited the volunteerism bug to bite her, and Cathy continues to actively serve on boards for corporations and non-profits, including the Manchester Community Music School. Cathy Burnham Martin was also the 2009 recipient of Easter Seals’ David P. Goodwin Lifetime Commitment Award.

Though her father once trained under the executive chef at Boston’s famed Copley Plaza Hotel, and her mother quickly gained Best-Cook-In-Town status, Cathy admits that her own earliest recipe creations evolved out of laziness and a desire to use fewer ingredients and take less time. Her passion for great tasting, simple cooking led to the celebrated KISS™ Keep It Super Simple original recipe cookbook series.

The story of legendary hero Diomedes grows in this never before told story from author Gregory Michael Nixon, “The Diomedeia”.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Synopsis

A historically-based novel with authentic, legendary, & fictional characters interacting across the extraordinary panorama of the Bronze Age Collapse in the Hittite Empire between the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean seas. Diomedes, previously a hero of the Trojan War, and the polyglot Peoples of the Sea raid inland into the Hittite Empire during its final months. It is both a study of ancient mythic consciousness and an exciting adventure of love, character, destruction, desperate survival, and the lived mystery of pagan rituals. It was a time of such chaos, royalty was overthrown, palaces and temples were burnt, and the power of the gods was thrown into doubt, yet the ancient Great Goddess, who had been suppressed, began to regain her former dominance.

Diomedes, though prominent in Homer’s Iliad — a warrior the equal of Hektor or Achilleus, a thinker as cunning as Odysseus and as wise as Nestor, and the only man who dared wound gods — has seldom, if ever, been the chief protagonist in literature. He is given his due within. His own wandering adventures and suffering after the destruction of Ilios are traced as far north as Kolkhis (Colchis) in the Black Sea, through involvement with the last Hittite royal family in Anatolia, and as far south as Alasiya (Cyprus) in the Mediterranean. He ascends the heights of glory but also must descend into the dark Underworld in the attempt to save the one he loves.

The Review

This was a compelling, gripping ancient historical fiction read. As a longtime enthusiast in regards to Ancient Greek mythology and history, it was so fascinating to see the unique balance the author found between the educational, historical facts and mannerisms from the people of that era, with the exploration of mythology and the impact that belief system had on the people and their culture back in that era, including the reintroduction of the Triple Goddess and her role in people’s lives.

To me, the grand scale of the adventure and the depth of character that was found in Diomedes as a character was so powerful to read. The way the author was able to create a modern-day Iliad while still finding the tone and heart of what made Homer’s work so profound in that era was amazing, as was the complex mindset and actions of Diomedes as a whole. The attention to detail on the actions and culture of that historical period allowed the reader to feel pleasantly lost in that time, crafting a narrative that felt real and engaging.

The Verdict

Legendary, captivating, and entertaining, author Gregory Michael Nixon’s “The Diomedeia” is a must-read historical fiction read. The twists and turns in the narrative, the grand scale of the journey of Diomedes as a whole, and the thought-provoking story will stay with readers long after the final page has turned. About the Author

I have been writing all my life, beginning in our small town in Saskatchewan. Most my adult life was spent as university professor, so my publishing to this point had all been academic (but still accomplished). As an avocation, in my off hours I studied the Mycenaean era of Ancient Greece, as well as theories of myth & ritual and the mythic mind. Once I retired, I returned to a novelistic venture I had been dreaming of since reading Homer’s Iliad at 15 years old: bringing to life the further adventures of the hero, Diomedes. When at last I dedicated myself to novel writing two years ago, my dream was reinvigorated. However, my characters insisted on entering the Hittite Empire, probably because its capital, Hattusa, came down in flames only a few years after Troy (Ilios). I followed their wishes and brought Hittite royalty into my tale, including Suppiluliuma II, the last of the Great Kings. I immersed myself in Hittite studies, and finally this unusual book emerged — an historical fiction with a strong portrayal of mythic consciousness at the time of the Bronze Age collapse..
