Author Yael Yannay shares the story of higher pilot Avi Lanir, who never returned from Syrian capture during the Yom Kippur War in the book “Avi Lanir – A Short Life Story: The Courage and Capture of an Israeli Fighter Pilot.”

The Synopsis
This is the story of the life and death of Lt. Col. Avi Lanir (1940-1974)—the most senior Israeli pilot to fall into Syrian captivity during the Yom Kippur War, and the only one who did not return alive.
Lanir died after brutal torture, without betraying the critical secret the Israeli Air Force had entrusted to his care. The body was defeated, yet the human spirit soared and triumphed. In these stormy and turbulent times, here is the story of a man whose brief spring touched the seasons of a nascent Israel.
Israeli author and editor Yael Yannay has woven a moving, inspiring biographical tapestry from the memories of family members, soul mates, and comrades-in-arms, and from the reflections of those who led Israel then—in body and in spirit. A profound, complex story: one of beauty and a vibrant life attuned to awareness— full of orders and briefings; question marks and family; love and yearning; wounds and hopes.
The Review
What immediately struck me was how honest and heartfelt the author’s writing was. While a national hero who withstood some of the worst torture a person could endure during war before passing, the author could have easily written a biography that was pure hero worship. Still, instead the author delved into the complex humanity that was Avi Lanir’s life growing up and during his time as a fighter pilot, captured best in the author’s opening chapters that showcased the stress Avi was under during his last meeting with his wife, and his reaction to not seeing his child leading to a disagreement and later reflection on the words not said between them.
The honesty was balanced well with the detail and immersive writing experience the author brought to this book. The way the author conveyed the historical events that Avi’s father and grandfather experienced and how these impacted Israel as a whole, while also balancing this with Avi’s personal struggles and experiences, was memorable. The sheer volume of courage that Avi displayed during his career and short life, especially in those pivotal moments withstanding torture to keep his country’s military secrets, exuded a bravery that is inspiring and infectious all at once.
The Verdict
Honest, compelling, and engaging, author Yael Yannay’s “Avi Lanir – A Short Life Story” is a must-read book. The biography holds nothing back, is well-researched, and brings so much insight to life in Israel and in the Israel Air Force, both historically and through the life of Avi Lanir. A group of people find their lives uprooted by the events of September 11th and the subsequent war in Afghanistan in the novel “Forever Changed” by author Jim Servi.

The Synopsis
Starting out in the everyday country setting of rural Wisconsin, the world is quickly transformed when two soaring towers crumble to the ground and America is transformed from peace to chaos. The events that transpired are known by many around the world and revealed in this adventurous historical fiction. Forever Changed captures the details and portrays the feelings of citizens thrown into the extraordinary positions on September 11th and the war in Afghanistan that followed.
Paul Foster is a small-town boy looking for adventure and love, but only one woman could ever capture his heart even as he is thrust into war. JD, his best friend, is consumed by war before he ever sets foot there and is equally transformed when he returns home. Marie Lafayette is an innocent girl ready to expand her comfort zone, but never thought she would ever love a soldier, or have to watch him leave. Lynn Stone, on the other hand, has always loved men in uniform while she travelled the world in a military family. Never did she think loving a soldier would be so hard. Nasir is a young Afghan man that watches the Taliban take over his homeland and tear his family apart.
As their simple, happy lives are transformed, their paths intertwine in unforeseen ways, creating circumstances that none of them could have imagined. Forever Changed captures the essence of a globally connected world during the pivotal moments surrounding September 11th, 2001 and gives us a comprehensive look at the war in Afghanistan with a perspective that can only be gained from exploring the Afghan countryside and experiencing combat firsthand.
Jim Servi lives in Hamburg, Wisconsin with his wife and three boys. He is a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Jim has written for several magazines and newspapers, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars magazine. This is his first novel.
The Review
This was such a powerful and moving read. The author expertly crafted a narrative that felt both relatable and heartbreaking. The depth of world-building and character development was evident from the beginning, with the author creating diverse, deep, and compelling characters that highlight the struggles and hardships so many faced during this troubling point in modern history. The tension that builds throughout that fateful day on September 11th really stays with readers, especially those who lived through that day, as readers feel the terror and heartbreak of those on the scene of those tragedies and the uncertainty so many felt watching the day unfold on their television screens.
The powerful themes of this book really resonated with readers as the story progressed. The impact of war and how it changes people is the driving force of the narrative, both for those who serve in the military and the people waiting behind who must watch their loved ones go to war and put their lives on the line. The complexities of war and politics take center stage as well, with multiple perspectives giving readers the mindset of loyal soldiers committed to the American cause, loving spouses who want nothing more than their loved ones safe return, and even the surprising emotional story of Nasir, a young Afghani boy who slowly is indoctrinated into the Taliban after suffering his own losses and has a complex character arc that isn’t a typically villain arc, but instead a tragic figure who loses himself to a cause he is essentially born into by circumstances.
The Verdict
Haunting, thought-provoking, and emotionally driven, author Jim Servi’s “Forever Changed” is a must-read historical fiction-meets-military-action-thriller. The character-driven, thoughtful narrative will keep readers invested, and the memories of this historic event will help readers understand those most impacted by this tragedy and war in ways they may not have known before. Zachary Whitlock knows sheep. He knows farming and knows what it’s like to have his best friend forced into an internment camp for Japanese Americans. What he does not know much about is goats and traveling by sea on cargo ships, yet he makes a decision to go with a group of volunteers to Japan to help deliver a herd of more than two hundred goats, many of which are pregnant, to survivors of the U.S. bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Early spring, 1948. An American Friends Service Committee meeting was in progress in our house. Several items of business were being discussed by a team of five members, who sometimes arrived with their children and occasionally a dachshund named Parker.
I sat in our big leaf maple tree, properly termed genus acer macrophyllum, which my older brother Jacob once said was planted as a memorial, although for what or whom, I don’t know. With my back against its trunk, and my feet wedged into the crooks of its limbs, I’d long felt I was a part of that tree. Behind my ear a pencil, on my lap a clipboard and my trigonometry assignment. I could work on assignments and keep an eye on the lambs out in the pasture.
Trigonometry is the key to any number of pursuits. Medicine. Engineering. Agricultural science. It was offered at Bainbridge High during the senior year, but I wanted to challenge it. I had enough credits to graduate early, except for a math course, and math was my strong suit.
High school. I felt like I was just marking time, and I wanted to be finished with it.
Then what? I had a part-time job with the island’s newspaper, first as a paper boy. (Of course, not all paper boys are boys. When we were eighth graders, my friend Reyna had a paper route.) Later, I took over what my employers called “the high school beat” and Young Farmers

news. But I was nearly seventeen, and I wanted more. Maybe university? Maybe travel? I wanted to expand my horizons, as the phrase goes.
So, I went to the bank, took money from my account, purchased a money order, and mailed it to the American School of Chicago, Illinois. Fully accredited. Trigonometry was tough. And I liked that. It was fun.
From the pasture I heard a quiet mewling. A tiny woolly being, born early and wobble-legged still, was getting some sun and fresh air and an introduction to the big, wide world. I knew the lamb was fine for a while longer. I could continue working and return the lambs to the loafing shed a bit later.
Twigs snapped, footsteps through the grass. “Hello.”
Standing below was a friend of my parents, Mr. Floyd Schmoe. A Quaker. A conscientious objector. Almost a legend.
My brother Jacob was, too. Not a legend, but a conscientious objector. Because he would not carry a gun, some people called him a conchie during the war. That’s rude.
Mr. Floyd Schmoe would not fight against the Central Powers in World War I. Violence all around. He would not kill. In Europe he worked with the Red Cross. Later, in Poland, he helped refugees find shelter, food, medical supplies.
He also worked for the Park Service at Mount Rainier as a naturalist and taught at the university in Seattle. Same as my parents, he and Mrs. Schmoe are American Friends Service Committee Observers. For the cause of fairness. Justice. They make it their business to visit places where people are being harmed for no fault of their own, but out of envy, prejudice, or greed, and they write about it.
“Room up there for one more?” Mr. Schmoe reached for a nearby branch. Long and lean, he levered himself up. “I’m interrupting you.”
“It’s okay. I’m stuck.” I tapped the clipboard with my pencil.
“You’ll figure it out. I asked after you, whether you were off to college.
Your mother said it would be a while. You’re a bit young still, she said.” “These are my trig calculations. I’m studying trigonometry by
correspondence, through American Schools.”
SHIRLEY MILLER KAMADA 17
“American Schools? I’ve heard of that. Illinois, right? Trigonometry is usually taught in the senior year, isn’t it?”
“Yes, sir. But graduation? I want to get a jump on it. I feel ready to be done.”
“What courses do you still need, in order to do that?” “Just this—trigonometry.”
“I see! Well, your mother sent me, said I’d probably find you here, and she’s about to serve crumb cake.”
Lambs called from the pasture. “Nice flock.”
“Thank you, sir. They’re Lincolns.”
He braced to swing down. “I’ll be heading inside.”
“You can go back in through the window if you like.”
He grinned. “Thanks, that’s okay. I’ll tell your mother you’ll be in soon.” Leaving my clipboard in the tree, I got the lambs, bleating all the way, into the loafing shed. After climbing back up to retrieve my clipboard, I went in through the window and put away my math lesson. A sweet smell drifted through the hall door. Crumb cake.
One good thing about hosting a Friends Service Committee meeting is the food. Salads and desserts. Easy to pack in a car, handy to eat from a plate on the arm of a chair. Or on a lap. Mother has always kept linen napkins edged in her hand-crocheted lace for those occasions. No one expected me to sit through meetings, but sometimes it was interesting.
Pausing on the top step, I brushed grass and bits of leaves off my pantlegs, then retied a shoe lace. Mr. Schmoe’s voice carried up the stairs. He was telling committee members about a project, delivering donated farm animals to families in Japan who had lost their homes and livelihoods because of the war. I heard, “Bombs. Innocent victims of conflict. Hundreds of thousands on the edge of starvation.” I heard, “Goats. Cargo ship. Japan.” One of the Peace Churches was organizing voyages and supervising volunteers to care for the animals. Finding volunteers—he called them Cowboys, and friendly laughter followed—was not easy. Goats aren’t as familiar as horses and cows, the more typical farm animals. No way around it, caring for livestock is hard work.

The conversation quieted then, and I wasn’t much interested in less exciting news.
As I sat there on the stairs, the seed was planted. It sprouted and grew like bindweed. I could not get it out of my head. Mr. Floyd Schmoe was going to Japan. By ship. With goats.
For Mr. Schmoe, this was a way to aid suffering people and, also, to be permitted to visit Japan, since the country was under occupation by the Allied Forces and closed to all but a few civilians. After getting the goats to their destinations, Mr. Schmoe planned to talk with people whose advice he needed to get started on a project he felt passionate about. Building houses for those made homeless when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
A feeling rushed through me. Shaken to my bones. The voyage, the animal care, helping families in need. I wanted to be part of that. All of it
As a member of the Young Farmers Club, I’d helped transport sheep to livestock judging competitions. YFC members worked together to pen and care for the sheep, sometimes for three days duration. Goats couldn’t be much different than sheep. I was sixteen going on seventeen. A couple hundred goats on a cargo ship to Japan? What could go wrong?
This was important, and I could do it. I knew I could. But how?
Downstairs, I enjoyed the cake and hot chocolate Mother had made for the younger guests and me. Later, I helped straighten the front room, as always, and on the floor, under the end table beside the couch, I found a pamphlet describing the Heifer Project. On the front was a drawing of cattle walking up a ramp onto a ship. A cargo ship, I thought. Tucked inside the pamphlet were several pages of questions and instructions. An application! Breathless, I found my favorite pen and went to my writing table. The questions seemed straight forward and reasonable. In answer to, “Do you possess any special skills that would be of value to the project,” I wrote, “I have cared for our family’s flock of sheep, which are ruminants, as are goats, since I could walk.”

Giving “General Delivery,” as my return address, I signed and dated the application, slipped the pages into an envelope, licked the flap, and ran my thumb, twice, along the closing.
On Monday, when the school day was done, I took the application to the post office, bought and applied a stamp, and dropped the envelope into the slot. Just before I walked out the door, the postmaster called, “Hello, young Mr. Whitlock. Say hello to your folks for me.” I turned, lifted my hand and nodded, then went out to my bicycle. My stomach felt strange for a moment, but I pedaled toward home, and that feeling passed.
1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?
I could say, it has been my love of travel, my degrees, genealogical publications, life at sea, four decades of systems analysis, but it really stemmed from time in my life as a kid. It was a towering toboggan hill that fed an early appetite for challenge, tall tales and doing the impossible. The black forested river valley set my dreams. In my kid’s mind, it was a place of horror, adventure, wildness and sometimes miracles.

2) What inspired you to write your book?
a) In less than a couple of lifetimes after London Oxford arrived, my father’s people settled the area just north of his land. My great-grandparents married in a church that was erected on what used to be his property. I was curious and wanted to know clearly who he was. He was instrumental in cutting and delivering cut timber to the east. It was a livelihood that my ancestors thrived on.
b) With the American attention extremely concerned with keeping outsiders out of their country in the period after the war of 1776, some Americans were concerned about leaving. In this story, a handful find themselves similarly blocked at the border.
c) The SWALLOWING OF THE MUSKELLUNGE is part of a series -“The Mischief Makers.” Each examines the phrase “Why do bad things happen to good people?” It doesn’t blame THE GOD (as in God the father in the Trinity) directly, but it attributes some blame to the “gahds,” who are mythological creatures (the Wisakedjak et al). They may have good intentions, but exist in an imperfect world and are bound with conflicting responsibilities.
The second book examines similar themes and beings (the Púca et al) within the same period but in South-East Ireland. The story focuses on difficult times after the Irish Rebellion of 1798.
The third book tells the story of a local Anishinabeg family from what would become Packenham, with a focus on what happened during the War of 1812.
3) What drew you into this particular genre?
I like history. The added genres are meant to popularize ideas for people who don’t pay much attention to the historical record.
4) If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?
I would ask Thomas Wright what he really wanted, and why he chose not to go to Boston.
Advertisements
5) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?
Develop a good web site. Stoke your web site and vendor sites with respectable reviews, and market via Facebook and other social media.
6) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?
If anyone is serious about accomplishing something important, should say a thing to any living person until it is completed and ready for review. Smokers, for example, might brag about how they tried to quit a hundred times, or someone might complain that they have planned to get somewhere many times but never gone. Walking the walk will feed a fire in the belly. Voicing the idea will just soak the ashes.
7) What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?
Hard Worked Days, which will be released in the spring of 2026, will be a science fiction novel, and will tell a story of a Lebanese and Greek recent immigrants who are forced to leave Brooklyn, which implies that it might lead to the end of the world.
An addition to the Mischief Makers trilogy will likely follow the year after. It will be a story about a local Anishinabeg family from what would eventually become Packenham. It will focus on events that transpired during the War of 1812.
A science fiction trilogy is also being written. It involves a young Navajo guy and a Hispanic FBI agent. It involves a curbing of reality theme.

An archeologist and a photojournalist search for clues to the history of an ancient site in the Yucatan Peninsula in author Ann Charles’s “Chewed Up By The Jungle,” the third book in the Dig Site Mystery series.

The Synopsis
Whatever lies in wait in the jungle isn’t just history … it’s hungry!
Deep in the Yucatán Peninsula sits a long forgotten, mysterious site—lost to time, swallowed by the jungle, haunted by ancient secrets.
Archaeologist Dr. Angélica Garcia is chasing clues, and she will stop at nothing to uncover the site’s history. Was it a sacred center? A place of long-forgotten rituals? Or something far more sinister?
Quint Parker, a sharp-eyed photojournalist, is chasing Angélica. He never signed up for old curses, creepy whispers in the shadows, or man-eating mosquitoes. He just wants to make sure his girlfriend makes it out of the jungle—alive.
The deeper they dig into the past, the more they must confront a deadly truth: Some places should never be disturbed!
The Review
Filled with humor and heart, this historical and mythological adventure and suspense story does an incredible job of layering this narrative with compelling action sequences and engaging mysteries. The imagery and detail the author put into this writing really brought the heat and the textures of the jungle to life as the protagonist made their way in, delving into the history that was waiting to be discovered in this ancient site. The delivery of this imagery allowed the reader to feel the sweat-drenched humidity and the buzzing of the bugs as they traveled, creating an almost cinematic style of storytelling.
At its heart, however, was the rich character dynamics and attention the author gave Mayan lore and history. The interconnectedness behind Ann Charles’s other series, like the Deadwood series and others, was well brought out in these characters’ arcs, especially Quint’s sister being revealed to be none other than Violet in Deadwood. His bond and relationship with Angelica, and the way it played into their encounters with both the historical and paranormal side of this adventure, were wild. I loved the respect and detail the author brought to bringing Mayan culture to life on the page, while also adding her own unique spin to the stories being told.
The Verdict
Memorable, entertaining, and thrilling, author Ann Charles’s “Chewed Up By The Jungle” is an excellent entry in the Dig Site Mystery series. This must-read book does a great job of hooking new readers while also laying down some of the foundation of the first two books in the beginning, and while it is a slow-burning start, once the action picks up, the story never waivers, and readers will be hanging onto every twist and turn in the story. One of the great warriors of her time, she soon learns that the hardest battles are not always those fought with a sword and shield. RUNES OF THE DOKKRSDOTTIR (Book 1)
The story of Myrgjol the Dokkrsdottir begins with her birth in 800s Scandinavia where it becomes immediately obvious that she is very different in so many ways.
After adventures abroad and continuously making friends and loyal allies, and after suffering many losses and setbacks, she bravely travels the many winding paths of her destiny – facing and defeating a dark foe she never expected to face.
This was such a compelling and gripping read. The rich blend of historical fiction meets fantasy and the immersive way the author uses imagery draws the reader into the sea-faring settings of this novel, making the world-building feel larger than life on the page. The author’s use of mythology and detail in the narrative allows the reader to feel transported back to the Viking age, keeping the reader invested in the story.
Yet, it was the dynamic development of the protagonist that fueled this story. The rich and thoughtful detail that went into the protagonist’s backstory, from the tragic circumstances that brought her father over to live amongst the Norse people as a child to the tragedies she faces and the supernatural prophecy that hung over her head as she spent her life struggling to balance the light and darkness within her, made her character arc and journey so much more impactful and engaging.
RUNE OF RENEWAL (BOOK TWO)
THE SYNOPSIS
The Dokkrsdottir is not your ordinary Norse woman of the Viking age. One of the great warriors of her time, she soon learns that the hardest battles are not always those fought with a sword and shield. Through countless trials and tests, she is led by visions and omens on numerous adventures with the help of steadfast friends and family to discover her mysterious supernatural destiny, one more extraordinary than anyone could ever have imagined.
RUNE OF RENEWAL (Book 2)
The story of the Dokkrsdottir continues in a strange new time and place finding her out of her familiar world, but the pressure on her to continue as one of the greatest warriors ever increases as the stakes are now world wide and on a grander scale than she could ever have imagined.
However, through the foresight and dedication of many of her descendants, she has the diehard support of friends and family to see her through to her destiny of thwarting the plans of the Dark.
The world-building and mythos that the author establishes in this series are amplified greatly in this sequel. The exploration of the time travel element is also amplified in this book, bringing the protagonist into one of human history’s darkest times, WWII. The development of the Dark and its forces and the suspense that forms with each step that Dokkrsdottir takes on her journey makes this a compelling story.
This story’s character development and action were the true highlights of the narrative. The rich development of the protagonist as she continues to engage with new allies and descendants and the out-of-this-world action, including one major battle that changes the entire landscape of the series, create a rich and dynamic story that will instantly draw the reader in.
RUNE OF DESTINY (BOOK THREE)
THE SYNOPSIS
The Dokkrsdottir is not your ordinary Norse woman of the Viking age. One of the great warriors of her time, she soon learns that the hardest battles are not always those fought with a sword and shield. Through countless trials and tests, she is led by visions and omens on numerous adventures with the help of steadfast friends and family to discover her mysterious supernatural destiny, one more extraordinary than anyone could ever have imagined.
Rune of Destiny Summary:
The final chapter of the main story of the Dokkrsdottir’s destiny that finds the continuation of the living world in the hands of Myrgjol, her descendants, and the choices they all must make.
With battles of the “greatest warrrior” transpiring on both sides of the veil, it is a series of desperate and grueling battles to the very end before she can enjoy her reward with the knowledge that the living world will continue in the loving embrace of the Light and not in ruin by the Dark.
The scale and engaging setting stood out in this story. The author did an incredible job of bringing both the physical and spiritual worlds to life on the page, showcasing the imagery in the author’s writing as they shifted between the jumps in periods and showcased Dokkrsdottir’s life on the other side of the veil. The balance of threats that the protagonists faced was excellent as well, as the human threats perfectly paralleled the different forces of darkness that pursued them, especially the Thule Society and their hunt for gateways around the world.
While the series has become known for some great action, this novel added more depth to the spiritual nature of the narrative os well. The world knows the protagonist in this story as a proud and strong warrior. Still, the novel takes the time to reveal those vulnerable moments that the protagonist experiences, from being reunited with lost loved ones to making peace with being separated from others she loves in her family, and much more. The mythos and culture of Viking history were well represented here. The protagonist’s connection to her family, loved ones, and people allowed the reader to connect to the story on a much grander scale.
RUNE OF REVENGE (BOOK FOUR)
THE SYNOPSIS
The legendary saga of Ingrid Stone-Splitter, the most loyal and greatest friend of the Dokkrsdottir, after returning home amid strife and loss.
A powerful woman of many destinies, Ingrid embarks on journey after journey to fulfill the peaceful promises of her father
Harald, to help set the stage for the Dokkrsdottir to fulfill her destiny, and to be a hammer which smashes the Dark.
Another compelling and exhilarating historical fiction meets supernatural thriller. The author does a wonderful job of capturing the tone and the atmosphere of life in the Viking Age, especially during an age when Vikings expanded into Saxon territory and blended this with Norse mythology perfectly, making the supernatural and fantasy elements feel natural to the world around the characters.
The heart of the narrative was in the new protagonist, exploring a strong supporting character in the series and giving a free perspective to the legend and destiny of the Dokkrsdottir overall. The personal nature of Ingrid’s journey and how it ties into the cliffhanger finale from the last book will keep longtime fans of this series invested and thrilled to be in the thick of the action.
RUNE OF WHISPERS (BOOK FIVE)
THE SYNOPSIS
Myrgjol the Dokkrsdottir’s path may be fraught with physical dangers and battle, but some wars are fought with whispered words and deceitful lies. While in Saxon lands, she must learn to maneuver the battlefield as well as her position on the board in the game of Saxon politics. Will she be successful?
And though she is blind to all the pieces in The Game, a Saxon gamemaster plays on her behalf as well as his own against many others, and the enormity of the risk spirals out of control for everyone.
This was a welcome addition to the historical fiction and dark fantasy series! The author found a way to keep the series fresh and showcased the depth of the world this series inhabits, giving readers a fresh new perspective by exploring the politics of Saxon life and Myrgjol’s impact on that world. The way the action takes a backseat to the atmosphere and the tension politics played at that time made the overall narrative feel elevated for readers.
The mystery and intrigue this turn of events took in the story was evenly matched by the rich historical context and fantasy mythos the series has brought to life so vividly. The more emotional context of the protagonist’s story felt fully realized in this narrative, and the evolution of her allies and how life in Saxon lands evolved among some of the Norse settlers at that time was an intriguing subplot that readers will instantly get lost in.

A perfect balance of historical fiction and fantasy thriller, the author delves deep into Norse mythology and the concepts of life after death with strong conviction. The series not only explores Norse mythology, but the impact that a legacy can have on generations to come and history itself. The infusion of strong supporting characters that can lead their own books and bringing the protagonist not only into different timelines but different worlds altogether establishes a sense of legendary status and adds new depth to the theme of the hero’s journey that has become so ingrained into the fabric of our culture throughout human history. Filled with action, heart, and destiny, this is a rich historical fiction fantasy series that reader will not be able to get enough of.

The Synopsis
What would you risk to uncover a secret buried for over 150 years?
From bestselling and multi–award-winning author David R. Leng comes the next pulse-pounding installment in the Echoes of Fortune series.
When historian Jack Sullivan, Smithsonian curator Emma Wilson, and fellow former Navy SEAL Steve Johnson set out for a Thanksgiving dive off Cozumel, they expected nothing more than warm waters and forgotten wrecks. Instead, they uncover a Confederate ghost ship that vanished in 1865—along with a secret powerful enough to change history.
But they’re not alone. Shadowy mercenaries and a black-hulled yacht stalk their every move, determined to silence them before the truth surfaces. From dazzling reefs to the back alleys of Veracruz, Jack and his team are forced into a deadly game where history isn’t past—it’s a weapon.
Some secrets don’t want to be found. And some will kill to stay buried.
Perfect for fans of Steve Berry, Clive Cussler, Dan Brown, and James Rollins, Shadows Over Cozumel delivers nonstop action, historical intrigue, and a mystery that spans centuries.
The Review
For such a short novella, the author packs a lot of history and world-building into this narrative. The author expertly weaves mystery and intrigue into the modern-day adventure story, with a pacing that speaks to the story’s natural rhythm, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat and the tension on the page rising as these characters delve deeper into the mystery. The imagery in this story was so cinematic in its delivery, with details that brought the vibrant blues and greens of the ocean depths and the haunting shipwrecks to life effortlessly.
The dynamic between the three main characters and the engaging history were the main drives of this narrative. The exploration of Confederate soldiers’ weapons and gold has been the subject of numerous mysteries since the end of the Civil War. Yet, the ties into Mexico at the time and the idea of secret societies begun by these confederates, still being in play, added danger and suspense to the story. At the same time, the bond shared between Jack, Steve, and Emma not only showcases the bond that history can have on those seeking answers, but also highlights the hidden dangers of letting that sense of adventure become obsession.
The Verdict
Adrenaline-fueled, thrilling, and entertaining, author David R. Leng’s “Echoes of Fortune: Shadows Over Cozumel” is a must-read novella. The historical fiction series continues to expand and grow, not only with this fantastic cast of characters but also delivers a conspiracy and hidden history that would make for an excellent Netflix series, thanks to its dynamic and cinematic imagery, as well as the balance of action and character development. 1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?
After retiring for the second time, I needed something to keep my mind active. Much of my experience in the Army and as a higher education administrator involved writing. So, I decided to try my hand at being an author. I enjoy it because it is truly a craft putting words together to tell a story. Even better, with fiction, you get to develop the story, the characters, and the flow of the narrative.

2) What inspired you to write your book?
In my writing I try to do several things. These are to challenge preconceived notions, to make people think, and to inspire positive change. Wallia’s Quest resulted from my fascination with late antiquity. The world we live in today was shaped by the events that happened in this very important time. These include the Chriistianization of the Roman Empire. This allowed Rome to live even after the Western Roman Empire died. All you have to do to see this is to go to a Catholic mass. The entire ritual from the vestments to the acclamations, to the blessing at the end haven’t changed for almost two thousand years. I find this continuity comforting. The other thing that happened during late antiquity was the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the rise of the “barbarian” successor states—which evolved into the countries of Western Europe. The forty-year Goth migration set the stage for this. It was the first time that an entire people was settled, armed and under its own leadership, within the boundaries of the Roman Empire. All of the subsequent barbarian invasions were attempting to replicate what the Goths accomplished. Even the Vandals, who eventually occupied Africa, were following the Goths’ example by doing what they tried twice to do without success.
After I determined the time period I wanted to write about, I had to find a protagonist. I settled on Wallia. Of course, the most famous of the Goths was Alaric. He was famous because he sacked Rome. However, as I read the history of this period, I realized that the sack of Rome represented a major failure for the Goths. They didn’t want to sack Roma. All they wanted was to renegotiate their arrangement with the Romans to prevent a repeat of the Battle of the Frigidus where they lost 10,000 men fighting for the Romans in a war that didn’t mean anything to them. The Goth leader who finally succeeded where Alaric failed was Wallia. He established a viable state that outlasted the Western Roman Empire by several centuries. And we know nothing about Wallia until he became king several years before he died. This allowed me to write a compelling backstory that, I hope, brings this vibrant period to life from both the Roman and “barbarian” perspectives.
3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?
There are several. The first is that history made by real people dealing with real issues. If the leaders are good, they are pragmatic, flexible, introspective, and willing to what is necessary to meet their goals. We often glorify the generals who win the bloodiest battles, and the politicians who create chaos but don’t create anything that lasts. The story of Wallia is one of understanding, creating alliances, creativity, and working with partners to create solutions that work. Interestingly, although we know nothing about Wallia, he was able to create a workable solution that had evaded his people for almost half a century. He had to partner with the Romans to do this. And he needed to understand the Romans to effectively partner with them. In the end, he had to be willing to accept a solution that didn’t give his people evertything they wanted, but gave them what they needed to survive and thrive.
4) What drew you into this particular genre?
I’m fascinated by history but I don’t like academic rigor, nor do I like to be limited by what ancient writers wrote or what the archeological record shows us. Historical fiction is a good way to break free of these restraints and to tell a story that is possible, compelling, and brings the past to life. As I do this, I attempt to adhere very closely to what ancient writers and the archeological record give us. The only times I deviate is when I think it is very likely that events unfolded differently than an ancient writer reports. My historical fiction is different than most. I like to say that I write Historical fiction with a capital “H.” Most historical fiction authors tell compelling stories about relatively unknown people that are set in an interesting historical milieus. My fiction is about the main characters in the historical period I’m writing about. So, in Wallia’s Quest I’m creating a narrative about the emperors, kings, generals, bishops and warriors who shaped this very important period. Although this is somewhat constraining, this approach alllows me to provide a human face to what would otherwise be a confusing jumble of disconnected dates, events, and names. I wanted to tell the story of the people that made this history—to describe their motivations, and to demonstrate that while circumstances are ever-changing, human beings tend to react to their circumstances in predictable ways based on the context in which they lived.
5) If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?
The easy answer is Wallia. After spending several years creating his fictional backstory, I’d like to know how close I actually came to the mark. However, the interview I’d want would be a joint discussion with Constantius III and Galla Placidia. This would have been interesting for several reasons. First, although they eventually married, Galla Placidia obviously detested her husband. However, that man, Constantius III, was the most successful Roman leader of his age. He did much to restore the Western Roman Empire. His early death represented one of the greatest “what ifs” in history. I’d want to know what Placidia found detestable about a man who was successful, very capable, and, by all existing accounts, was good-looking and had a good sense of humor.
6) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?
I like to write but I hate to market. I’ve done some Facebook advertising and a few YouTube videos and a little Instagram and TicTock. I’m not sure that I really can say that I have much of a “readership.” That said, I do enjoy talking to people who read my books and take their feedback to heart.
7) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?
Write because you enjoy it, not because you want to make a living doing it. I’m fortunate enough to be twice retired, so I’m not writing to make a living. I’m writing because I it gives my life some meaning.
That said, writing is like any other craft. It requires developing skill, constant practice, networking, gaining feedback, and improving as a result.
And, if you want to make a living by writing, get lucky or be willing to spend much of your life marketing.
8) What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?
More of the same. After the Wallia’s Quest series is finished, I may write another book about late antiquity detailing the life of a usurper named Constantine III. If I don’t do that, I’d like to write a fictional book about the world that our technology moguls want to create. I think this could be fascinating.

About the Author
Les Jauron is a West Point graduate, a retired Army officer, and a retired college administrator. He has two graduate degrees – a Master’s in Military Arts and Sciences from the School for Advanced Military Studies, and a Master’s in Business Administration from Oklahoma City University.
Les has always been fascinated by history, organizational leadership, politics, military affairs, and rocks. He’s always been fascinated by the ancient world and, particularly, late antiquity. The reason for this fascination is because that world did much to shape our world today. During that time, the Roman Empire dealt with many of the same issues we are experiencing in our modern world — immigration, great disparities of wealth, the interplay between Christianity and government, and a toxic political environment that causes politicians to leverage fear of “the other” to gain and maintain power.
Les and his wife, Zoela, lived in their motor home for four years after Les retired for the second time and traveled extensively through the western United States. After ending their RV odyssey, Les and Zoela settled for a few years in Clarkdale, Arizona before moving to Chico California to be closer to their three children and nine grandchildren.
During their wanderings, Les grew to love red rocks and exploring slot canyons, hoo-doos, arches and natural bridges, and ancient petroglyphs and pictographs. After settling in Arizona, he began collecting rocks of every sort — which are now strewn throughout the house and the backyard. Recently, Les and Zoela moved to Chico, California to be nearer to their three children and nine grandchildren.
But writing is Les’ greatest passion. He uses fiction as his medium to entertain, to educate, provoke thought, challenge assumptions, and inspire change.

The Synopsis
“My name is Wallia, and I am a Goth.” With these words Wallia continues his epic forty-year quest for freedom from Rome and a permanent home for his people. The second book of the series begins after Wallia is betrayed by his nemesis, Eriulf, and is forced to flee for his life from the Goths.
Given refuge by the Romans, Wallia meets Emperor Theodosius and agrees to support the emperor’s plan—to give his people a homeland within the empire in exchange for providing soldiers to serve Rome. Wallia then joins the Scholae Palatinae, the elite cavalry squadron that protects the emperor.
In his position near the center of power, Wallia quickly learns the intricacies of court life and becomes a valued advisor to the emperor. After a short sojourn to Gaul, where he unsuccessfully attempts to save the Western Roman emperor from himself, Wallia returns to Constantinople. Eventually, as a reward for his outstanding service, Wallia is given a Roman estate and marries a Roman woman. She gives Wallia a son and the proud parents decide to raise their child as a Roman.
Then fate intervenes. Wallia is called back into Roman service to help the emperor to defeat a massive barbarian invasion and several Roman usurpers. Through endless marching, intense fighting, constant conflict, shifting loyalties, and incessant intrigues, Wallia learns some hard truths. Things are not always what they seem. Bad decisions lead to immeasurable suffering. The Goths and Romans have different interests. Unity requires leaders to subordinate their goals to those of the tribe. And, most importantly, the emperor does not see the Goths as partners in a shared enterprise—but as a weapon to be used against his enemies.
These hard truths force Wallia to make hard choices. Can he trust his people, even after being betrayed by his enemies in the tribe? Does his loyalty to his own people outweigh his oath to Rome? Or, should he remain faithful to an emperor who is willing to fight to the last Goth to maintain his power?
In the end, Wallia must decide if his future is with Rome—or the Goths.
The Review
This sequel is a fantastic narrative that pushes the envelope and continues to capture the Roman Empire’s powerful history. The level of world-building and historical context the author pours into this sequel is astounding, allowing readers to get a glimpse into the events of the first book while diving straight into the action and politics that demanded so much of Wallia’s time in this novel. The powerful imagery in the author’s writing style captured the wildness of Wallia and his group’s travels, the glory of Rome’s spectacle and setting, and the gritty intrigue of the power struggles these leaders played out amongst themselves.
The character dynamics and powerful themes played a significant role in this story. The protagonist himself undergoes substantial growth and comes to haunting realizations about those he both admires and distrusts, discovering that things are often not what they seem. The mystery and suspense of whose allegiance he will ultimately favor become a driving point in this narrative, and the struggle for faith, equality, and even love becomes a driving force in his role in the growing relationship between Rome’s ruling elite and his people, the Goths. The morality of his role in his people’s path was also deeply explored, showing the character’s remorse for having been misled into persecuting a family for no reason, or, in this book, for infiltrating rival groups of Rome and making questionable decisions to secure the mission he was given.
The Verdict
A complex, enthralling, and memorable historical fiction novel, author Les Jauron’s “Wallia’s Quest Book 2: In Roman Service” is a must-read novel. The attention to detail regarding the history and historical figures themselves, the balance of action and intrigue, and the thought-provoking depth of character development that added to the intrigue of political backstabbing and power struggles in the Roman Empire and beyond made this such a fantastic sequel to get lost in.
