Not only was it amazing to see this theme of self-acceptance and family come to life on the page, but the idea of taking this series known for putting the Twins at center stage and instead giving their older sister a voice made this feel truly emotional and uplifting. Marc Polett loves writing and storytelling and was inspired to write this book by his wife’s love of animals and her unique ability to understand them. Marc was born and raised in scenic Gladwyne, PA, and spent his childhood exploring the parks and trails that are spread throughout the historic town, finding peace in nature.

The educational value and the inviting storytelling both played a significant part in this book’s success. The thoughtful way the author engaged the reader with memorable characters and a depth of honesty that spoke to the author’s real-life adventures with Teddy made this a stellar read. The imagery, both in writing and the illustrations themselves, captures young readers’ imaginations and makes for a heartfelt story.

Everybody has a story. More importantly; every person is deserving of friendship, kindness and acceptance. Teddy Loses His Ears is a non-fiction story about my real life rescue cat who lost his ears to frostbite while being homeless in negative 50 degree temperatures in central Canada.

All of the books in the Teddy series will highlight educational points about pet care, support inclusivity and celebrate being different together. Teddy Loses His Ears is the introduction book to the series and touches on self esteem and disability awareness. Each illustration in the story is hand painted and even has a Teddy’s favourite toy hidden on every page for children to find! The author did an incredible job of crafting a unique narrative that was relatable and inspiring. The warmth of the artwork allows the reader to get lost in the fictional world of the author’s making, and the inspirational tone that the author portrays in this narrative really allows the reader to feel connected to these characters.

To me, the themes of standing up to bullies and the unique diversity of the cast of characters in this book were fantastic and the core of this book. The way the author teaches kids to stand up for themselves and others, and the way the author was able to incorporate characters from all walks of life, including a Ukraine refugee, allows the reader to get a sense of the world around them and the way to celebrate our differences to find our common ground with one another.

The Synopsis

Children have always struggled with the obligations of school, chores, practices, and other family responsibilities. Lumpy’s Gift is a delightful fable about how all those little trials help make it possible to find your true potential. In this story, Lumpy, a lump of clay, is taken from his home by a well-meaning potter who does “terrible” things to Lumpy. But by the end, Lumpy has become something extraordinary, something he never knew he wanted to be. This was a truly imaginative and creative take on the children’s book narrative. The author and illustrator both worked together to create a stunning narrative of a lump of clay that finds itself undergoing a personal transformation and becoming uprooted from the comfort of the life they knew. The warmth of the illustration colors and the atmosphere that they created made the story feel captivating.

The heart of the narrative rests in the unique character development of Lumpy and the insightful lessons that the book brought to life. Lessons such as challenging ourselves to do things outside of our comfort zone to better our own lives, and how offering our best selves to others can be the most true and powerful form of a gift a person can give, all made this story shine greatly. 

The Verdict

Memorable, heartfelt, and entertaining, author Christopher Packard’s “Lumpy’s Gift” is a wonderful children’s book and greatly illustrated by Jill Packard. This was an inventive and creative children’s book. The cartoon-style illustrations of these two kingdoms and the even pacing of the narrative were great to see come to life. The heartfelt aspect of the narrative and the natural progression of the tension between these two kingdoms will keep readers invested in the story.

To me, the overall message and theme of the story was so engaging. The author did a wonderful job of showcasing the power of overcoming our differences and working together to help the people we care the most about. The way the eraser and pencil kingdoms balanced each other out and the focus on the young girl whom they both helped on a regular basis made this a compelling read.
