The Synopsis

A cancer diagnosis changes life in an instant. There is the cancer itself, whose unpredictability triggers fear and feelings of powerlessness. And then there is the seemingly overwhelming medical system, which is often difficult to navigate.

It’s hard not to despair in such an existential situation. Achim Zinggrebe, M.D., a cancer survivor, knows this firsthand. He experienced firsthand how essential it is to take the reins when facing this challenge. Fighting his way out of profound hopelessness, he embraced new approaches and consciously shaped his path to recovery.

From these experiences, he developed a scientifically grounded, holistic, and customizable therapeutic concept. This approach combines alternative healing methods, conventional medical treatments, nutritional and exercise recommendations, and spiritual practices—because it’s not about choosing one or the other. It’s about creating a powerful synergy that addresses the body, mind, and soul as one.

This book is an energizing guide that redefines the meaning of health and the unique path each person can take toward it. A knowledgeable yet deeply compassionate companion for cancer patients and their loved ones, it offers support from the shock of diagnosis to the end of treatment—and far beyond.

The Review

Transformative and insightful, this book does a tremendous job of creating a guide and motivation for those struggling through the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other ailments. The author’s authenticity shines through on every page, with the book balancing the technical aspects of the author’s process of healing with the more personal and insightful experiences from their own life that helped create these guiding steps in the book. The research and detail that the author provided in this book were astounding, as the author’s journey and his revelation of the bleeding edge of cancer research and science were carefully backed up with medical studies, which helped balance out the more spiritual and holistic steps in the author’s process.

That is what made this book stand out from all the other books in this medical nonfiction, motivational style. The author’s interwoven process of both modern medical practices and holistic methods, as well as the role of mentality and spirituality in the entire healing process. The personal nature of this process, including the emotional component of struggling through the diagnosis and the various treatments, and how the author can help readers reclaim their sense of self and gain the strength needed to face this diagnosis, is so motivating and refreshing to see in a holistic, medically-driven book.

The Verdict

Insightful, compelling, and engaging, author Achim Zinggrebe’s “Rise and Thrive Above Cancer” is a must-read nonfiction book. The powerful mental and emotional therapeutic properties of an inspiring book such as this can have a profound impact on those struggling with a similar diagnosis, and the depth of research the author poured into this book gave readers a spark of hope and comfort in their journey of navigating this shocking experience. The Synopsis

Version 1.0.0

A book bearing her name on the spine is Deirdre Collins’ driving passion. A book that a reader will remove from a library shelf to take home on a rainy afternoon. A book she can dedicate to her late father. Her dream is to join the Chicago school of writers led by Saul Bellow, Nelson Algren, and Stuart Dybek.

When she is unable to publish her first novel, depression lands her on suicide watch in an Albuquerque behavioral hospital. There she meets Max Fletcher, a handsome young man with drive and genius who is battling demons of his own.

After discharge, they move to different parts of the country and lose track of each other. Max becomes a successful entertainment producer for a late night talk show.

As her father’s health fails, Deirdre leaves the artistic community in New Mexico to lead a quiet life in a rural Illinois town. She writes and tends her great aunt’s garden. One morning she finds a teenager on her property with a gun. After reporting the incident to her local high school, she lands a job supervising a room for at-risk kids. A healthy life style and a commitment to her writing enables her to conquer mood swings that derailed her as a young woman. Working with kids who struggle with depression and anxiety, mood disorders, and other behavioral problems opens her mind and then her heart to the wide range of sorrow and joy on the human spectrum.

A call from Max Fletcher upends Deirdre’s peaceful existence. Max promises publishing connections which have eluded Deirdre. She is flattered by Max’s attention and his desire to help her achieve her dreams. Then she discovers his true intentions. A confrontation in New York reveals Max’s deteriorating health which he believes is untreatable by medication or therapy. When Deirdre discovers that Max has plagiarized her work, she must decide whether to take legal action against him.

The Review

This was a profoundly moving read. The author did an incredible job of creating a heartfelt drama that was character-driven in every aspect. The narrative was very introspective, allowing the reader to feel the inner workings of the protagonist’s mind and their struggles through a slow-burn style of storytelling.

The heart of the story was in the theme and the authenticity the author brought to the story and characters. The importance of focusing on mental health and the artistic process, as well as the nuance that comes with discovering our passions and drives in life, was well-developed in the narrative. The balance of the dark moments the characters faced, combined with the hopeful notes the future brought to their lives, made this story so emotionally heartwarming in its delivery.

The Verdict

Thought-provoking, engaging, and heartfelt, author Eileen T. Lynch’s “Splenditude” is a must-read genre fiction drama. The emotional and vulnerable themes the author explores, along with the wealth of character development and hopeful undertones, create a well-balanced narrative that readers can relate to and identify with. Crave: The Hidden Biology of Addiction and Cancer by Raphael E. Cuomo, Ph.D. Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Raphael E. Cuomo shares the impact that addiction can have on a person’s biology and its relation to cancer as a whole in the book “Crave: The Hidden Biology of Addiction and Cancer.”

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Crave reveals how everyday habits, from sugar and screens to overwork and alcohol, leave measurable biological traces that increase cancer risk. It reframes addiction as a central, modifiable factor in chronic disease, drawing on cutting-edge research in neuroscience, immunology, and public health.

The Review

What a powerful and engaging book! The author does a fantastic job of exploring both the biological and sociological aspects of addiction, showing how advertising, social media, and peer pressure, to name just a few, have contributed to people’s turning to addictive behavior and practice. This includes everything from sugar consumption to doom scrolling on social media and so much more.

It is mind-blowing to examine how these behavioral habits affect the shape and impact of our biology and leave people more prone to cancerous cells over time. The fast pace of the book and the direct way the author writes allow readers to get an educational perspective on addiction and its various forms.

The Verdict

Memorable, thought-provoking, and engaging, author Raphael E. Cuomo, Ph.D., is a must-read nonfiction health book on addiction and its relationship to cancer development. The detail and the mindfulness that the author poured into this book, and the new perspective that readers gain from learning about how habits can change a person biologically, make this a worthy book to turn to in educating oneself about one’s health. “You Are Not Alone” came from suggestions/recommendations that I write a book that speaks to how mentoring can bring value to the support structure for mental health. After a rather extensive review of the literature that is out there, I found that there was literature that looked at mentoring and mental health from an academic perspective but not from a practice perspective. That needed to change.

Writing this book provided me with the opportunity to confront some of my demons and to also better understand why I had behaved the way that I did. I realized that I had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and that I had not treated it properly. I had relied on my spouse and two children to provide the support that I needed and yet they had their own trauma in dealing with my behavior. This book will give you a glimpse into my own story which will help you understand the value that mentoring could have brought me.

Interview with Author JM Shaw

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

I have been an avid writer for over thirty years, ever since my mom bought me a typewriter—yes, I’m that old. Exercising my creative muscles has become more than a hobby; it has grown into a passion that, at times, borders on obsession. Fortunately, writing is decidedly cheaper than therapy.

In 2019, I was diagnosed with autism and ADHD. This was a surprise, but rather than viewing my neurodiversity as a hindrance, I choose to see it as a gift. It offers me a unique lens through which to see the world and infuses my creative works with distinctiveness and depth.

Over the years, I have filled several hard drives with poems, short stories, and full-length novels, yet there are still countless ideas rattling around in my head, just waiting to be unleashed.

Advertisements

What inspired you to write your book?

I’ve always been a “what if” kind of person, and my muse for this series was sparked by the question: “What if fairy tales were more than stories, and monsters were flesh and blood?”

As someone who believes in good triumphing over evil, I started my series with the idea that my protagonist would strive to do good in the world—whether they wanted to or not. Along the way, I drew inspiration from the Arthurian legends, particularly the tales of Merlin, whose power and wisdom have fascinated me.

In many ways, my protagonist became my vision of a young Merlin, brimming with potential, longing for a normal life, but burdened by magical gifts that make such a life impossible.

What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

The overarching theme in my series is being true to oneself despite life’s challenges, trusting those we love to have our backs, and finding a sense of belonging. I enjoy tackling mental health issues—such as guilt, despair, and loneliness—and demonstrating how my characters overcome their adversity in an adventure setting. I also routinely incorporate wholesome messages that give my readers something to think about.

In my latest novel, Forsaken Souls, my protagonist’s metaphysical and magical abilities continue to grow, bordering on uncontrollable, which is both worrying and dangerous. At the same time, Callum is traumatized from the events of the first three novels—particularly those of the third book—which have tainted his outlook and self-concept.  Instead of facing his fears, he avoids them, which only deepens his pain. Only by trusting in those he loves, leaning on their strength, and confronting his past can he begin to heal.

Callum’s journey is ultimately one of identity, trust, and connection, a reminder that family and friends are invaluable. I hope readers take to heart the message that emotional pain after trauma is a normal part of life, but the strength to overcome our torment is found through the bonds we forge with our loved ones.

What drew you into this particular genre?

I’m drawn to those genres that offer me creative freedom, and fantasy adventure gives me exactly that. I’m also partial to sci-fi, supernatural, paranormal, thrillers, and horror. Basically, any genre that allows me to explore outlandish concepts while weaving adventure and action into my novels is appealing. Although each genre requires a unique frame of mind, and with the latter two, I must leave the lights on while I write to avoid nightmares.

Oddly enough, I never set out to write an epic fantasy adventure; it just happened naturally. And while I’m committed to finishing my Callum Walker Series, I will eventually branch into other genres.

If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?

Honestly, I already know everything there is to know about my characters—their histories, desires, fears, and the choices they’ll make. So rather than asking them a question, I think I’d sit with them. Maybe offer a moment of peace, or even a heartfelt “thank you” for letting me tell their story.

If I had to ask something, it might be this: “Do you forgive me for everything I’ve put you through?”

Because, as any author knows, there is no story without conflict, and we aren’t always kind to our characters.

Advertisements

What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

Instagram and Facebook are my preferred platforms for building readership. Their visual nature allows me to showcase my novels, share behind-the-scenes content, and connect more personally with fans and fellow authors. That said, nothing compares to the impact of face-to-face interactions. Author events and book signings are, without a doubt, my most effective tool—those who take the time to stop and chat often feel a stronger connection to both me and my work. From there, word of mouth takes over, which I’ve found to be the most powerful and lasting form of promotion.

What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Perseverance, especially in the face of criticism, is essential for any writer. You can’t please everyone, and there will always be those who dislike your work. But writing is a passion—untamed and unscripted—it is about personal expression rather than pleasing the masses. You must hold tightly to your reason for writing or risk losing sight of your passion as you pursue everyone else’s expectations. Otherwise, your art will become emotionless and void of authenticity. Thusly, every time I sit down to write, I remind myself that whatever I create must come from the heart. After all, that is where the magic lives.

What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

I’m currently working my way through the fifth novel in my Callum Walker Series, with the sixth already in development. Beyond that, I’m toying with the idea of writing a standalone or a novel set outside my current series—something more sci-fi than fantasy, fresh and creatively liberating.

She and her family embarked upon a journey of understanding, acceptance, and life-long learning when they discovered their shared diagnosis of autism and ADHD.   Writing is her passion and, with experience and interests in healthcare, psychology, martial arts, and personal training, she pours her unique insights and knowledge into all her creative fictions.

Interview with Author Randi-Lee Bowslaugh

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

I am a mom to 2 grown children and a grandma to 1 and have been married for 13 years! I have multiple fur babies who make life quite interesting at times. When I was younger I didn’t feel like I fit in much and suffered from depression. In my 30’s I was diagnosed with autism, which made my life make sense.

During my teenage years when I was first dealing with depression is when I truly started writing. I had written skits and short stories when I was younger but as a teenager, I really delved into writing. It was how I coped with what I was feeling at the time. Those first poems were what turned into my first book about 20 years later.

Advertisements

2) What inspired you to write your book?

My most recent book “Thoughts of a Warrior” came from a very strange moment. My mom mentioned something about me dieting (I was trying to lose weight at the time) and unintentionally made me feel horrible. To deal with that I wrote a poem.

After writing that poem I decided it was time to release a follow-up to ‘Thoughts of a Warrior’, my first book about being depressed. It needed a follow-up showing that we can make it through the bad times – doesn’t mean there aren’t still some bad times but they are much fewer and farther between.

3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

Mental illness knows no boundaries but that doesn’t make you broken.

No one is alone. We all struggle, we all have ups and downs.

Advertisements

4) What drew you into this particular genre?

There was a particular night that pushed me to publish. My youngest, who was struggling with depression, was crying about why no one liked her. It completely broke my heart and I realized that I wasn’t doing a good enough job talking about mental illness. That was the moment that I realized I needed to be loud.

5) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

Youtube has been the best. I host a weekly show, Write or Die Show, interviewing others and talking about mental illness. My guests and I share, connect and bring attention to mental illness.

6) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Write for yourself, don’t try to be something you aren’t. And remember that the first draft is not the final draft.

The Review

What a profound and truly moving read! The author does a remarkable job of finding the right balance between informing the reader and being empathetic to the nature of grief in general. The author’s ability to relate personal experiences to the grieving process and identify the root of what drives grief makes the education and practices related to the grieving process so much more moving and in-depth.

What stood out to this reader was the focus of the book’s inception on the COVID-10 pandemic, and how mental health in general, especially grief, got lost in confusion during that time. The horrors and fear that came with the pandemic and the hardship that came with having to face grief in such isolation and pain was so spot on, and thoroughly pushed through the core problems of pushing aside grief and mental health care in general to focus on other things to better help readers understand the importance of mental health altogether.

The Verdict

Thoughtful, heartfelt, and emotional, author Doug Lawrence’s “Grief: The Silent Pandemic” is a must-read nonfiction book on mental health and grief. The informative nature of the guided book and the raw and emotion-driven experiences that the author shares on a personal level and as a mentor will help readers relate to the book’s message and get lost in the process the author lays out for readers. Doug is a firm believer that mentoring begins with a person’s personal growth thereby helping to remove any obstacles or barriers to their professional growth and career development. As Doug has found, some of those barriers can be mental health and mental well-being challenges.

“You are Not Alone” came from the all to often stigma of people being afraid to ask for help, afraid to step out of the closet and say, “I need help”. Afraid to extend a hand to say, “its okay I will go with you on this journey.”

“You are Not Alone” came from cry for help and increased anxiety and depression from having to wait far to long for treatment and to begin a healing journey.

This book provides a solution to that problem.

Raised by Wolves, Possibly Monsters by Michael Swerdloff Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A powerful and moving story of the impact toxic masculinity has on those growing up and the way it drives others to become what they fought so hard not to drive author Michael Swerdloff’s “Raised by Wolves, Possibly Monsters”

The Synopsis

This is a story about a boy who wanted to be kind and loving but was raised by wolves and monsters who taught him to choose violence and aggression. As the boy grew to be a man, he wanted to be a protector of women but ended up being what girls and women needed protection from. He lied, cheated, and scammed his way through life until he couldn’t.

This memoir is his moving account of discovering healthy masculinity from the inside out. His journey has been sensational at times and unbelievable at others, but for many readers, it has been absolutely inspiring. Will the hungry wolves outlast the desire to be loving and beautiful? Can men truly change?

There is hope in witnessing the depth and commitment of a person willing to try to be better without knowing exactly how. This memoir captures one man’s struggle to transcend his past and imagine an entirely new future for himself premised on compassion, care, and advocacy.

We do not have to be what they did to us, but it’s our responsibility to do something about it.

The Review

The author’s story’s raw honesty and emotional impact were refreshing and memorable. The way the author can honestly depict and write out the painful experiences of his childhood, as well as the actions he himself took to continuously perpetuate this harmful lifestyle and the transformative experience of bettering himself, made this such a phenomenal memoir. The imagery found in his writing style and the importance of his ability to hone in on the conversational aspect of his writing, allowing readers to feel as if they have been having a true heart-to-heart with the author, made this an engaging read.

The true heart of this story is both the author’s transformative journey and the theme of toxic masculinity, and the impact toxicity can have on child development as a whole. The heartbreak of the author’s experiences in childhood, primarily his father’s actions, and the role addiction and toxicity played in his life were so poignant. The author never shies away rom the challenging moments, from his lying and cheating to his hospitalization in a mental hospital and the reformative path he found afterward in healing energy and Reiki as a whole.

The Verdict

A remarkable testament to the power of forgiveness and transformation as one man shares his journey to overcome the toxic traits that defined his early life, author Michael Swerdloff’s “Raised by Wolves, Possibly Monsters” is a must-read nonfiction memoir. The way the author can creatively paint an image of each and every experience he shares and can find a way of bridging the gap between the lessons he grew up with and the path to better-helping others, especially women, after the way he acted in his youth, made this a stunning message of hope and the path of change that hope can provide. Author and poet Lynda Monahan shares a powerful collection of poetry in honor of the people who contend with mental health on a daily basis in the collection “The Door at the End of Everything”.

The Synopsis

Written while Lynda Monahan was hospital writer-in-residence at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, working often on the adult and youth mental health wards, the tight, pared poems in The Door at the End of Everything give voice to and honour those living with mental illness, speaking to not only the suffering but also the courage and hope that is so clearly there as well.

A series of online readings from this collection, created with the help of a Canada Council grant, are available on YouTube.

The Review

What a profound and heartbreaking read! The author captures the voice and trauma of these individuals who suffer through and endure the pain of mental health trauma. The visceral nature of the poems’ themes and the thought-provoking imagery in the author’s writing style paint a picture of the turmoil so many feel inside, to the point that these feelings feel almost personified in the writing itself.

The emotional core of these poems and the powerful themes made this book what it is today: moving. The writing was indeed illuminating, as it allowed readers not only to feel and understand the internal struggles of so many people and the tragic reasoning for so many who make the hard decisions that impact their lives and the lives they leave behind, but it also allowed readers to see the promise of hope for those who fight through those struggles and search for the means of internal peace, in this case through the beauty and serenity of nature itself.

The Verdict

Overall, this was a moving and heartfelt read. The author did a brilliant job of capturing the heart and the passion that so many feel for developing this need to further the cause of mental health awareness. The imagery and atmosphere that the author creates through these poems and the emotional themes that the author explores make this a pivotal book that readers should return to time and time again.
