An unexpected family revelation and an even more shocking life or death situation lead a young man to discover a trove of family secrets that have put him and those he cares about in the crosshairs of a secret society hellbent on acquiring an ancient artifact in author Christopher Bowronโ€™s โ€œThe Society of Necessitiesโ€.

The Synopsis

In his lustful haste, he stepped off the curb behind a parked minivan. Turning, Daniel caught movement out of his left eye as the brown truck struck him. The impact was like a bug being hit by a fly swatter. He could feel his chest breaking-being thrown backwards onto the street, the back of his head hitting the pavement with a deadly force. All he could hear were tires screeching and his girlfriend Devi’s scream: “NO!”

Daniel St Croix is the beneficiary of his estranged grandfather’s estate-including a gold wedding band holding a powerful secret. The gold forming the band was originally given to a long-dead Egyptian Pharaoh from the gods who once walked the earth. Daniel must read Pierre St Croix’s well-kept journals to unravel the puzzle and imminent danger attached to his inheritance.

The Review

A fantastic blend of action, mythology, and sci-fi/fantasy style storytelling, author Christopher Bowron has crafted an incredible thriller for adult readers to enjoy. The story felt like a fantastic take on a modern-day Indiana Jones. The characters felt flawed yet realistic, while also showcasing incredible character growth that complimented the increasing mystery behind the sudden turn of events.

However, it was the mythos of the story that really stood out to me as a reader. From the bookโ€™s earliest chapters readers are treated to quite a shocking and enticing turn of events, as a brush with death itself sends the protagonist and his close circle careening into a series of events that are not only globe-trotting and death-defying, but mind-bending as well. The mystery itself is really engaging with the reader, and as each layer is peeled back in a fantastically paced read, readers will be shocked as new characters arise and the truth of not only the society but of Danielโ€™s family is fully revealed.

The Verdict

A mesmerizing, entertaining, and inviting action and adventure/thriller like no other, author Christopher Bowronโ€™s โ€œThe Society of Necessitiesโ€ is a must-read book for 2021 and one of the yearโ€™s contenders for best action and adventure novel. A great story with an inviting pace and twists and turns that will keep readers on the edge of their seats, this is not a book you want to miss. The Synopsis

Mason Hart has just lost his job, fiancรฉ, and car in less than 48-hours. A short time later he accosts a cop and ends up in jail. He finally lands in a hospital as the result of a jailhouse brawl. Heโ€™s helpless to quell this downhill slide into calamity. Since he believes all is lost at this point, suicide seems the only alternative leftโ€ฆ

Until the figure of Felicity Fortune, the Roman Goddess of Luck, interrupts Masonโ€™s suicidal plans in the nick of time. It seems Felicity Fortune was hampered by the bird flu and few other appointments, so she must apologize for her tardy appearance. She tells Mason that heโ€™s ripe for a cosmic alignment, and that his 15-minutes of fame and wealth are finally at hand. He is allotted six chances via the roll of the golden dice for his deserved share of the โ€œGreat Cornucopia.โ€

Beshaba, the Maid of Misfortune, has ear-marked Mason at the exact same time, to heap upon him the bad luck part of the equation. She is the evil incarnate daughter of Felicity, and now covets Mason for her own devious alignment. Everything that Beshaba represents is in stark contrast to her mother. It is a deliberate ploy to spite the good works of her mother, thus laying down a challenge of cosmic power.

Their simultaneous claim to Mason forces the two Goddesses into a mythological cat fight in hell. When this push and shove reaches a fevered pitch, even the destiny of mankind in called into question. Mason must find the solution and tear away the veil of darkness that could upset the divine balance between good and evil. What he doesnโ€™t know is that the final key to the solution is himself.

The Review

Another hit from author Chris Stevenson. The author takes a deep dive into fantasy and mythology, exploring the concept of luck and fate and destiny all at once as the narrative focuses on a man who becomes the focal point of a battle between a mother and her daughter, good and evil, and the fate of the cosmos as a whole.

The author did a fantastic job of capturing the essence and tone of films such as Bedazzled and Weird Science, infusing humor and wit into the overarching fantasy narrative that captures the readerโ€™s attention immediately. The relationships the protagonist builds with Felicity, the goddess who chooses him to be a part of this grand adventure, and even sub-characters like Augustus who arrived suddenly onto the scene in a very interesting way, helped make this story feel grounded in a very fantastic world the author created.

Mason and Felicity are a pairing that readers love to see grow and develop over the course of the narrative, and the twists and turns their relationship takes will keep readers hooked. Their bond and the battles they face against Felicityโ€™s daughter become the heart of this tale, and combined with the action and mythology of the story makes this a must-read novel.

The Verdict

A brilliant, engaging, and entertaining read, author Chris Stevensonโ€™s โ€œLuck Be A Ladyโ€ is a magnificent fantasy read for 2021. A great start to the year for fans of the genre, the authorโ€™s unique take on the mythology of ancient gods, destiny, and love are inviting and enthralling all at once, and make for a wonderful read. Twelve Hours On The Block by Jerry Harwood Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A new prisoner becomes witness to a shocking and brutal incident that starts a chain reaction that delves into the Aztec creation story in author Jerry Harwoodโ€™s โ€œTwelve Hours On The Blockโ€.

The Synopsis

Eli hoped to do his time and get back to living life outside prison. However, that hope faded when he watched a prisoner rip a guardโ€™s heart out and toss the body over the railing onto a funeral pyre of burning mattresses. The landscape of the prison begins to change as more and more strange characters strive for dominance in the anarchy that follows. Eli and his new friend, Tay, must navigate the chaos as the gods of the Aztec creation story emerge over the next twelve hours on the block.

The Review

This urban fiction/fantasy and horror story was expertly crafted. The author really packs a punch from the first pages of this book, with protagonist Eli being thrust into a horrific nightmare on his first day in prison. The story quickly evolves into a first-hand look into the Aztec mythology surrounding the creation story viewed through a modern lens.

The use of Hispanic lore such as Aztec mythology was an inspired choice, as it is rich with interesting figures and stories that are rarely used in modern literature or entertainment. The author gave a voice to rich mythology and beautifully blended it with fascinating and memorable characters that evolved quickly within this narrative.

The Verdict

A short yet powerfully written story, author Jerry Harwoodโ€™s โ€œTwelve Hours On The Blockโ€ is a fantastic and phenomenal story of ancient cultures and mythology, new beginnings, and fantasy/horror all blended into one entertaining read. Readers wonโ€™t be able to put down this exciting narrative, so be sure to grab your copies today!

Out of the Basement by James Rourke Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A writer with a haunting past must face his history and forge a new path forward in author James Rourkeโ€™s novel โ€œOut of the Basementโ€.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Michael Tanner is a citizen of two worlds. His outer world as a respected college professor affords him the opportunity to quietly pursue his joy of learning. His inner world, shaped by childhood abuse, is a prison of shame and pain where he battles mythological monsters that draw power from his nightmarish memories.

Though Michael has mastered the art of hiding his pain while in full view, the unexpected success of his new book, Bruce and Buddha: How Rock and Roll and Ancient Wisdom Can Guide your Life, pushes him well beyond his comfortable existence.

Bolstered by the possibility of romance, the encouragement of old friends, and a new ally, he decides he must face his past. Only by challenging humiliation can he earn the inner victory necessary to bring authentic peace to his life.

The Review

A truly powerful read, the author does an amazing job of creating a personal story of inner-turmoil that the protagonist has to fight from bleeding into his everyday life. Interspersed with the protagonistโ€™s personal struggles is a fantastic and intellectual study of philosophy and mythology that really fascinated me.

While exploring the study of great philosophers and how modern-day equivalents exist even unwittingly in music, television, and film from some of pop cultureโ€™s greatest artists was a fantastic concept to explore. One of the early discussions that the protagonist had with a reporter that immediately stood out to me was the concept of synchronicity, as this is something that has played into my daily life for the last year or so and the study of it has been a truly remarkable journey to undertake, so getting to see the protagonistโ€™s perspective was incredible.

The Verdict

Thought-provoking, emotional, and grounding, this was a quick yet engaging psychological drama that readers will instantly love. Memorable and relatable characters showcase the inner demons so many people must face and yet hide behind a carefully orchestrated mask to hide the pain, creating a truly one of a kind narrative that cannot be ignored. Where the quest for power is a must. The ability to lose it is just a scandal away. When the rich and powerful cry. They kill.

The Review

This is a fantastic historical fiction/fantasy novel that delves deep into a world of gods and royalty in the days of Ancient Egypt. In the Kingdom of Serenium, a young woman born to avenge her fallen parents and retake the throne that was meant to be hers must play a dangerous game of deceit, power and even battle amongst the new Pharaohs and the royalty surrounding them.

The mythology really takes center stage here, mixing with the political drama of the narrative that showcases the dangerous rise to power one must take and the powerful individuals the protagonist must overcome in order to achieve it. The introduction and use of the gods and the Divinity was a nice inclusion in this fantasy narrative, bringing a sense of otherworldly wonder into the bloody, sexual and tense drama of the royal court and all itโ€™s backstabbing that comes with it.

The Verdict

A well written, lengthy yet well executed narrative, the story of Nefer Blue Phoenix by Micah Patton is a must watch for anyone who enjoys ancient mythology, fantasy, history and political drama. The Heartless Divine by Varsha Ravi Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

The past bleeds into the present as reincarnated lovers bring back a history of tragedy, pain and blood in author Varsha Raviโ€™s novel โ€œThe Heartless Divineโ€.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

In this unexpected twist on mythology inspired by Sangam India, reincarnated lovers find themselves bound together, connected to their past by a centuries old tragedy that only one of them remembers.

In the ruthless martial empire of Naja, Suri is the crownโ€™s unfailing blade. But the princess dreams of a life exploring the lands beyond the borders, unshackled by blood. The king and queen offer her freedom, at a price: marriage to a king sheโ€™s meant to kill, and the death of Athri, a kingdom her family once nearly destroyed.

Her only obstacle lies in the mountains above the Athrian capital of Marai, where a young prophet sees a world struck by catastropheโ€”a world where a girl lies dead in the temple of the fire god, and the city lies burning below.

Centuries later, Suri lives with no recollection of her past lives. Haunted by her familyโ€™s deaths eighteen years ago, Suri sees the boy bleeding gold on her doormat as an opportunity to unravel the mystery of the car crash that took their lives. But not all gifts are created equal, and the boy soon proves to be more trouble than heโ€™s worth, a dangerous link back to a world of gods and wishes.

The Review

A well written deep dive into ancient mythology and incredible character development, author Varsha Ravi has created a masterpiece fantasy novel set in the mythology and folktale genre. From the bookโ€™s first pages, the author immediately draws the reader in, setting up the mystery of both characters while introducing the air of myth and legend into the narrative.

The author seamlessly runs the narrative back and forth between the past and the present, between myth and the novelโ€™s reality as readers are given a deep dive into a mythology that is rarely explored in modern day literature. A great story that speaks of love, blood and heartbreak, the novel introduces a great cast of characters that showcases the duality of the protagonists history and their present.

The Verdict

An evenly paced read filled with action, romance and heavy doses of legends, author Varsha Ravi has created a fantastic modern day fantasy novel that will give fans of mythology a narrative to deep dive into with ease. A wonderful read that keeps the reader engaged throughout every chapter, this is a must read novel of 2019 that readers should grab their copies of now as we head into 2020. Yankaiโ€™s Skull by Faramond Frie Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young warriorโ€™s obsession leads to disastrous consequences and a journey of redemption on author Faramond Frieโ€™s novel โ€œYankaiโ€™s Skullโ€.

The Synopsis

200 years ago, a Tibetan Shaman entrusts Yankai with the secret that other worlds connected to ours exist and contain immense and dangerous power. Yankai is obsessed with gathering the knowledge required to protect his people from these worlds and following years of study, he stumbles upon a doorway to one of them. Yankai crosses into a dark and advanced world powered by the essence of Human Beings. Captured and tortured, he fights back and escapes to Earth but brings with him a being of immense power and is followed by another intent on revenge.

Over 2 centuries, Yankai seeks the elusive and deadly Poet whom he believes can help him destroy these beings. Aided by an immortal, a psychic and a man prepared to risk his life for Yankaiโ€™s cause, the threads of all their lives converge into a single moment where the fate of all will be decided.

The Review

In this short yet powerful read, the reader is treated to a dark fantasy driven narrative infused with a bit of sci-fi action and a historical style of fighting in a modern day world. This mashup of genres and story devices make for an engaging read, giving the reader just enough backstory peppered throughout the narrative to connect with the characters without taking the reader out of the moment entirely.

The only critiques for this novel would involve transitions. There were moments in the narrative where it can be somewhat hard to discern where one characterโ€™s perspective ended and anotherโ€™s began, so the use of transitions would have done well to help the story flow a bit more smoothly. However this wasnโ€™t enough to take the reader out of the narrative completely, and I still found myself engaged in Yankaiโ€™s tale.

The Verdict

The novel is a fast paced, action-fueled fantasy that blends many different genres and has a way of making the modern world still feel ancient and mythical in its approach. The twists and turns that bring a plot device early in the narrative back into the novelโ€™s finale is going to be a fun and shocking twist readers wonโ€™t see coming, so be sure to grab your copy of Yankaiโ€™s Skull by Faramond Frie today!

Theyโ€™re in an alternate universeโ€”locked inside of an insane web world. How can they find the center of the web, where all good things are allowed to pass?

The Review

This was an exceptional new YA Horror/Fantasy novel like no other. So many novels in this genre explore well know and already established mythology, such as that of the Greek gods or the Norse gods, etc. Yet it is rare to find a novel that not only incorporates Native American folklore, but does it in a fresh, unique and action-packed way.

The story not only has fantastic and horrifying creatures, tales of survival and growing romance, but also has a deeply rooted emotional core in the characterโ€™s journey. Most notably Jory, the protagonist, brings a lot of heart and struggle to the tale, as she deals with the recent loss of her parents that slowly begins to mirror her adventure inside the nightmarish world she and her friends awoke in. The author does a brilliant job of creating relatable characters that readers will identify with and also creating natural bonds between them all that elevate the drama of the journey to find a way out of this hellish landscape theyโ€™re in.

The Verdict

This is a must read YA Horror/Fantasy novel. Filled with twists and turns, scares and thrills, and most importantly an emotional rollercoaster of a journey, this is a brilliant work of fiction that is deserving of a series, and I can only hope to see what happens next in Jory and her friendโ€™s adventures. This is a candidate for YA Horror/Fantasy of the year. If you havenโ€™t yet, be sure to grab your copy of Screamcatcher: Web World by Christy J. Breedlove today!

The Importance of Classical Literature in Todayโ€™s World

By Cheryl Carpinello

The world is a far difference place from the Golden Age of Greece in 500 BCE. Surely there is nothing to be gained from reading the stories, poetry, and drama of so long ago. Right? Wrong.

The one constant from the beginning of manโ€™s time on this earth through today and beyond is human nature. Our surroundings and way of life have changed dramatically, but human beings have not. We are still dealing with the same emotions and situations as those who resided in ancient civilizations.

Love, anger, sadness, happiness, pride, despair, hunger, hatred, the need to succeed, the desire to be good and/or better, the frustrations of everyday life. These are just some of what drive our actions and our reactions. We evolve, and our world may get more complicated, but we canโ€™t change those.

What classical literature brings are examples of how others have dealt with similar situations as ours, be that outcome good or bad. It is the Greek tragedies that have had the most impact. These stories by definition have tragic endings. But they also have something else: The Ancient Greeks called it catharsisโ€”a cleansing; a release of emotions like fear, pity, and sadness through the viewing of some type of art. In this case the Greek tragedies.

Antigone by Sophocles deals with rash behavior and hubris (the Greek word for pride) in the two main characters: King Oedipus and his niece Antigone. When Oedipus the King decides that his rule about denying burial to a traitor must be followed for the better of the state, he ends up sentencing his niece and future wife of his son to death when Antigone buries her brother as the gods demanded. Ultimately his action also leads to the death of his son and wife. Even more relevant is the fact that each of the characters are right. Creon is obeying the law of the land; Antigone is obeying the law of the gods. How often we have seen similar situations play out on our streets today.

I mention Sophocles because a company called Theater of War Productions (founded in 2009) is using the plays of Sophoclesโ€”particularly Antigone and Ajaxโ€”to help veterans adjust to being home, to help First Responders deal with the tragedies they face, and to help communities understand and deal with the conflicts within their own neighborhoods. Some of the projects taken on include War & Mental Health, Domestic Violence, Racism & Social Justice, Police/Community Relations, Addiction & Substance Abuse, Gun Violence, and Caregiving & Death. A full list of the topics and literature used by Theater of War Productions is available on their website.

Antigone in Ferguson was presented in Ferguson, Missouri after the 2014, shooting of Michael Brown, 18, by a police officer. The play achieved what Theater of War Productions founder Bryan Doerries set out to do. In an article in Smithsonian (November 2107), he told readers his productions are not meant to solve problems, but to get conversations started between all involved. He has been so successful that in March 2017, he was appointed as the NYC Public Artist in Residence.

It is often heard that if we donโ€™t study history, then we are bound to repeat the same mistakes over again. I believe the same is true for literature. There is no safer outlet for kids and adults to see the effects decisions can have on a life. Within the pages of Classical Literature, we are able to explore ways to deal with the difficult situations that arise and to get dialogs started.
