Death Never Dies: Mourning 2020 Through the Lives and Deaths of Public Figures by Lee Fearnside

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Lee Fearnside takes readers on an emotional and insightful journey into how celebrity deaths impact the public and what it means to remember them and say goodbye to them in the book, “Death Never Dies: Mourning 2020 Through the Lives and Deaths of Public Figures”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

This anthology mourns 27 public figures who died in 2020 with essays and poetry by 40 writers paired with relief print portraits. Some may have been celebrities for decades, while others found international attention through their deaths, but all shaped our perception of our world. The public figures mourned range from Eddie Van Halen to Ellis Marsalis Jr., George Floyd to Jim Lehrer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg to Kobe Bryant.

Contributing writers include poets laureate, a screenwriter, playwrights, artists, educators, activists, journalists, a chef, and storytellers.

Mourning celebrities may be a way to mourn something larger. We don’t know these people, after all, but they often have significance in our lives. By reflecting on people through words and images, this project asks who and what do we want to say goodbye to, and who and what do we want to remember. Together, these images and words help us understand our relationships to each other and to ourselves during this tumultuous year.

The Review

This is such an insightful and engaging read. The interesting aspect of this book is how the author brought together so many different writers to add their voices to the cacophony of emotions and powerful writing that inhabits this collection. The study of celebrities and public figures is so inherently fascinating and investing in our modern age when news and gossip are available at the touch of a button instantly now.

When a well-known public figure who has had an impact either purposely or inadvertently on our lives passes away, we feel that loss deeply. For me, one loss, in particular, hit hard in 2020, and that was Chadwick Boseman. The actor had become an icon for so many people around the world as the actor behind King T’Challa, aka The Black Panther of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While I connected to him as a fan of the comics, I could feel and recognize the emotional and inspiring impact he had on so many in the Black community around the world, and to see him go at such a young age was heartbreaking. Reading the heartfelt and emotional poetry and essays that so many writers put into this person’s life and death was incredibly moving, and really highlighted the impact those in the spotlight can have on us all personally.

The Verdict

A truly gripping, moving, and engaging read, author Lee Fearnside’s “Death Never Dies” is a must-read, non-fiction collection of fantastic writers and emotional writing overall. Accompanied by some truly vivid and awesome artwork of the late celebrities and figures, getting to see how these figures impacted people not only on a global scale and the social movements some of them represented, but how the personal impacts on each writer’s individual lives were so eloquently represented in the book was inspiring and really touched upon the human experience overall. Know Your Shit by Gary Marinin Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Prepare to laugh and educate yourself as readers are transported on an expletive journey through author Gary Marinin’s “Know Your Shit”, a unique language humor non-fiction read!

The Synopsis

Know Your Shit is a complete guide to everything you want to know about the word (and probably a lot you didn’t). It uses pop culture and personal anecdotes to explain every possible use of “shit” in North American English to provide humor to native speakers and a practical guide for ESL/EFL. It also explores the psychology of swearing in general, the history of it being accepted in the mainstream and the battles it took to get there, and some etymology where possible.

Advertisements

The Review

The author did such a fantastic job of balancing out the humor and wit of the subject matter with thought-provoking work on eliminating the stigma surrounding expletive language as a whole. The author writes in a way that blends very researched and clinical viewpoints on the study of language as a whole, and humor that keeps the utterance of these words light and hilarious at the same time.

What stood out to me was not only the history and study of language as a whole that this book took readers into, but the way the author delved into well-known or popular phrases or sayings that incorporates “shit” was so funny and interesting to read. As someone who has always believed and felt that words hold much more power and weight than people give them credit for, it was so great to see a book that challenges the negativity that so many people associate with a term and focuses instead on the intention behind the words being said.

The Verdict

A hilarious, entertaining, and memorable read, author Gary Marinin’s “Know Your Shit” is a must-read, non-fiction, and humor book. Insightful and engaging, the author does a marvelous job of both humoring the reader and creating an interesting topic of disunion that highlights the amount of research that went into this read. Even the study of this word’s uses within a North American and Canadian setting (with the promise of other regions in the future), made this a brilliant book. The Review

This was a truly thought-provoking and engaging read. The author perfectly balanced the book with memoir-style storytelling of his personal experiences with his own pet with the teachings and instructions that these experiences gained him and that he has imparted onto the reader. The descriptive nature of the author’s writing really helped visualize the steps the author mentions in this read and helps illustrate the mindset that readers should take with this subject.

What was so fascinating to me was the genre of this nonfiction read overall. As a lifelong pet parent and lover of animals in general, it was incredible to listen to the author’s insights into the relationship between humanity and their canine companions, as well as the way these majestic creatures communicate with each other and us as well.

The Verdict

A brilliant, thoughtful, and highly educational read, author Jesse Sternberg’s “Enlightened Dog Training” is a must-read nonfiction book for pet parents and animal enthusiasts this fall. With the pandemic forcing many people to stay home far more often than before, and the everyday routine with our pets changing along with it, it is so insightful to see the author’s perspective on dog training, parenting, and developing that bond between each other in this quick and engaging read. The Oncoming Revolution by Sam Mansourou Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author and teacher Sam Mansourou takes readers on a fast yet thought-provoking journey to explore the nature of reality and examine the paths we as a society must take to eliminate the control the elite have over society in the book “The Oncoming Revolution”.

The Synopsis

Author Mansourou ignores the left-right discourse and targets the ruling class as he calls for united civic action against the current paradigm maintained by the elite’s media, politicians and academia.

Advertisements

The Review

This was a well-written and informed read. The author does a great job of concisely and expertly weaving together the information and statistics needed to explore this concept of the elite controlling the masses and the need to end capitalism and political divides overall. The writing was clear and the author’s voice within his writing was brilliantly crafted, engaging the reader to allow them time to think on these issues for themselves while still driving the points home that he intended.

What stood out to me was the approach and tone the author took with this book. Rather than focus on one political party or another in our society, the author instead focuses on the position and role that the wealthy elites play in our world, primarily companies that control wealth, the media, etc. This was a great direction to take the book in, as it eliminated the anger and rage that so many can get consumed in when talking about the messages of a particular political party.

The Verdict

A thoughtful, educational, and philosophical read, author Sam Mansourou’s “The Oncoming Revolution” is a fantastic read that examines the changes we as a society can make to better our world. From the elimination of capitalism, making certain things like housing and food free, and getting rid of corporations’ hold on our resources, this book covers it all and is not to be missed. The Windsor Method: The Principles of Solo Training by Guy Windsor Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author and renowned historical swordsmanship instructor Guy Windsor lays out a step-by-step guide on building a solid foundation for personal development in his book, “The Windsor Method: The Principles of Solo Training”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

The secret behind all great artists is how they practice.

The Windsor Method: The Principles of Solo Training is the self-help book for people who want to add years to their life and life to their years. In this refreshingly straight-forward and gentle guide, bestselling author and world-renowned historical swordsmanship instructor Dr. Guy Windsor lays out the fundamental principles behind personal development and excellence in any field.

How? By establishing a solid foundation, and a step-by-step approach to mechanics and training. This is The Windsor Method: use it to guide your practice and elevate your skills.

The Review

What an insightful and delightfully written book. The author does a fantastic job of balancing teachable and educational passages with personal experiences that help the reader connect with the author on a more personal level. The lessons are thought-provoking and highly engaging, allowing for room for the reader to grow and expand on their personal journey as they dive further and further into the book.

I think for books that deal with personal growth, the most important aspect of finding a book that is different and stands out from others in this genre is the author themselves and the perspective they bring. The author’s experiences as a historical swordsman and teacher offer a truly unique perspective on discipline, skill, and dedication. The way the author speaks about balancing the physical with the mental aspect of personal growth was inspiring to read, as the focus in society for so long has been on more of the physical and less on the mental, making for a truly refreshing change of pace.

The Verdict

A thoughtful, sometimes humorous, and always relatable reading experience, author Guy Windsor’s “The Windsor Method” is a must-read book. The author has a way with words that put the reader at ease and allow them to feel connected to the author’s own experiences, while also providing the guidance and lessons that will help improve our own foundations as we strive for our own personal growth. About the Author

I am a swordsman, writer, and entrepreneur. I research and teach medieval and Renaissance Italian swordsmanship, blog about it, write books about it, have developed a card game to teach it (which involved founding another company, and crowdfunding), and run The School of European Swordsmanship.

Interview with Amanda Blackwood

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

I always wanted to be a writer. I remember writing stories in elementary school to go along with the drawings I would create. One particular teacher in the 6th grade really encouraged me when I wrote five pages in twenty minutes on a two paragraph creative writing project. I was upset that I had to turn it in because I wasn’t done yet. He took it anyway to grade it with everyone else’s. Then he asked me to turn it in again for extra credit when I was done with the story because he wanted to know what would happen to the characters I’d created. He told me I’d be a published author someday. Sadly he passed before I could make that happen, but I think he’d be proud.

Advertisements

2) What inspired you to write your book?

Too many people talk about human trafficking as they know without a shadow of a doubt what it means or why it looks like. Even when I stand on stage and tell my story of survival, I still can’t fully show or explain to someone the levels of fear involved, nor the torture I lived though to make it to the other side. I knew that if I was ever going to really move forward in my own life, I needed to get it all out in the open. Ironically, less than two months after my book was published I got engaged to the man of my dreams and I have finally, fully, totally moved on.

3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

Human trafficking can happen to anyone, regardless of upbringing, age, gender, race, religion, personal beliefs or relationship status. Nobody is immune, and it will NEVER look how you think it will or should.

4) What drew you into this particular genre?

I’ve lived a strange and amazing life. I also wrote science fiction post apocalyptic takes (who better to predict the end of the world than someone who already lived through it?) but this venture of nom-fiction autobiography seems to be what I get asked the most about. Truth is stranger than fiction. The fact I’m still alive is a miracle to be celebrated, and if it can help even one other person to do the same then my story deserves to be in the open.

5) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

Lately I seem to have more following on Facebook, though my social media skills haven’t been focused heavily on other platforms to really expand the following in other ways. I hope to do more of that in following months.

6) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

It’s impossible to edit nothing. Getting started can be so intimidating for everyone, including the seasoned writers. Don’t let that hold you back. Get stuff written down to start, even if it’s just ideas. You can edit and add later.

7) What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

I actually have my next book in a series being published on October 1st. My first book was published in January of 2018 and this next book will be book eight for me. I’m averaging two books per year right now while also balancing a personal life and full time job. I don’t plan to slow down anytime soon. I’ve had people tell me that I’m too ambitious and that this is an impossible pace. I just want to remind those people that it’s not impossible, and if they want to write a book the only thing holding them back is themselves. They just have to decide how much they really want it. Apparently I want it badly enough twice a year that somehow make it happen.

This was a powerful and moving work of philosophy and introspective work that blended nuggets of thought-provoking sentiments with artwork and photography that captured the essence and tone that the author was going for in this book. The imagery and tone always brought the reader to the present moment, taking away the worries of the past and future and instead focusing on moments as they were happening.

Well-written, thought-provoking, and sensitive, Bossarte’s Thriving After Sexual Abuse is a guidebook for a wide audience of readers who will immediately recognize its value whether they are survivors themselves or know someone who is.” ~Nonfiction Book Awards

The Review

This was an incredibly powerful and moving read. It’s really hard not to get emotional reading this book, even if you yourself as a reader have not experienced this kind of trauma. The likelihood of knowing someone who has gone through this is high, whether it be a family member or close friend, and witnessing the pain someone you love is in due to this kind of trauma can be really difficult and heartbreaking to witness.

Yet it was the powerful message that the author’s book gave that brought hope and strength to this book’s theme and narrative. The author’s ability to relay her own traumatic experiences while speaking with an authoritative voice and expertise highlights the techniques that can help other survivors to move beyond the trauma and find the things that bring them joy again in the world. Even the message on forgiveness is such an important topic, as it relates to how to find forgiveness for yourself for the false faults you found within yourself and instead keep the blame where it belongs, with the abuser. The way the author writes also allows for the reader to work on these techniques themselves, giving them the tools and practices they need to find their own path to heal and regain happiness in their lives.

The Verdict

A heartfelt, emotional, and memorable read, author Denise Bossarte’s “Thriving After Sexual Abuse” is a must-read book for survivors and readers alike. The honesty and engaging way the author not only relays her story but balances that out with lessons and techniques found through experience to help those who have had to deal with this kind of trauma is truly incredible and amazing to see unfold, as it shows the strength and work that goes into overcoming trauma and coming out the other side on a brighter note. If you are looking for a nonfiction read that shares a tale of pain and triumph in the face of trauma, then you have to grab your own copy of this powerful read today!

Dear Arlo: Adventures in Dadding by Tom Kreffer Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Tom Kreffer returns with his unique brand of humorous and relatable anecdotes as he explores the first year of fatherhood in his latest book, “Dear Arlo”, the second book in his Adventures in Dadding series.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

It begins immediately.

There’s no transition period, no trial run, no supervised training, no e-learning module and no simulation that you can f**k up as many times as you need to until you get it right.

As soon as the midwife hands you your newborn baby, you are responsible for keeping it alive.

Picking up moments after Dear Dory ends, Dear Arlo: Adventures in Dadding continues the story of one dad and his journal as he strives to survive the first year of parenthood, blundering his way through bottle-sterilising, night feeds and some cataclysmic nappy changes – all while a pandemic sweeps across the planet.

WARNING: ONCE AGAIN, THIS BOOK CONTAINS A LOT OF SWEARING

The Review

This was a brilliant follow-up to the author’s first novel, Dear Dory. Where the first book followed the journey of pregnancy and expecting to become a father, Dear Arlo expertly navigates the real-life feelings and experiences that one encounters in their first year of fatherhood. The humor and wit in which the author infuses his personality into the real-life experiences of being a parent for the first time.

From the first moments of bliss you feel upon holding your child for the first time, to the anxiety of getting your child home for the first time, forgetful trips at the market, and even those moments away from home at work, missing your family dearly, the author finds a balance between his humorous writing style with realism that touches upon the emotional experience parenthood has.

The challenges and anxiety-ridden feelings that come up during that first year, in particular, are captured exceptionally, and yet the magic and excitement and love that comes from seeing your child grow is infused naturally into the narrative, making this story shine so brightly.

The Verdict

A remarkable, engaging, and thoughtful nonfiction read on parenthood, author Tom Kreffer’s “Dear Arlo” is a must-read of 2021. The unique thing about this book is that the author doesn’t write it like a “how-to” guide on parenthood or give instruction on how you should be a father. Instead, the book comes to life as a memoir-style narrative that gives a more personal and emotional touch to the subject. Heartfelt in its delivery, be sure you grab your own copy of this fantastic book today!
