The Review

A truly insightful and engaging read, the author does a remarkable job of crafting a guide that feels instructive and compelling. The wealth of knowledge and skill the author brings to each chapter is evident on every page, and the straightforward, educational approach to the topic feels both guided and relatable, giving readers a sense of ease as they jump into this guidebook.

What stood out from other books in the tech sphere was the lack of technical terminology and the scope of work this book was meant to encompass. Rather than focus on coding and other tech-specific language, the author approached it from an inspirational and business-level perspective, allowing the reader to get an inside look at how app development works without feeling lost in the tech language and knowledge that often escapes others.

The Verdict

Memorable, thoughtful, and engaging, author Amanda Spann’s “I Have An App Idea is a must-read nonfiction book and guide for those looking to develop their ideas for apps. The focus on developing the idea itself, as well as the app to accompany it, was great, and the author’s honest and insightful perspective came through naturally in a straightforward writing style that will keep readers returning to the book time and time again. Connecting Goals to Impacts and Outcomes by Claude Hanhart and Rachel Collins Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Authors Claude Hanhart and Rachel Collins share effective tools to communicate goals in business in their book “Connecting Goals to Impacts and Outcomes.”

Advertisements

The Synopsis

You’ve been in that Agile planning session.

Everyone agrees on goals like “improve customer experience” or “increase engagement.” The roadmap looks aligned. The OKRs are approved. But when the sprint ends, no one can clearly explain what success actually means—or why customers should care.

Months later, your product team ships a feature. Customers don’t use it. Stakeholders ask uncomfortable questions. Someone says, “I thought we were building something different.”

This isn’t a delivery problem. It’s a conversation problem.

Across Agile teams, product management organizations, and enterprise transformations, teams work hard, follow the process, and deliver on time—yet still struggle to create real customer and business value. The gap isn’t execution. It’s how goals, assumptions, and decisions are discussed.

Structured Conversations is a practical toolkit for closing that gap.

This book shows product leaders, Agile coaches, and delivery teams how to use clear language and visual thinking to align strategy, product decisions, and day‑to‑day work around measurable outcomes.

In this book, you’ll learn how to:

  • Write clear, outcome‑focused goals using VERB + NOUN syntax that eliminate ambiguity
  • Connect customer needs to business impact using Empathy Mapping, Customer Journey Mapping, and Impact Mapping
  • Align product roadmaps and delivery plans with OKRs that drive accountability and learning
  • Validate assumptions early using Hypothesis‑Driven Development and Example Mapping
  • Facilitate cross‑functional Agile conversations where disagreements become productive
  • Turn vague requirements into clear, executable user stories that teams interpret the same way

Drawing on experience across startups, financial services, and large‑scale Agile transformations, Structured Conversations bridges the gap between product strategy and value delivery with techniques that work in real‑world environments.

The approaches are modular. Start with the technique that addresses your biggest challenge today. Each chapter includes step‑by‑step guidance, real examples, and “Try This Right Now”exercises you can apply immediately.

Whether you work in product management, Agile delivery, or organizational change, this book helps you turn good intentions into measurable outcomes.

The Review

This was a compelling, engaging business-driven book. The authors do a wonderful job of hooking readers with a simple yet impactful solution that creates engagement and interest in companies and their products. The balance between thoughtful lessons and frameworks for driving these successes, along with the actual workbooks and guides the authors create, allows readers to put what they’ve learned into practice, making this a memorable book to get lost in.

The precision and expertise with which the authors lay out their templates was incredible. The idea of using a single noun and verb to communicate products and services, and of creating a comprehensive structure that businesses can build upon, was fantastic and incredibly innovative. The author’s writing style was engaging and to the point, and they imparted a lot of knowledge in just a short amount of time.

The Verdict

Engaging, thought-provoking, and compelling, “Connecting Goals to Impacts and Outcomes” by author Claude Hanhart and Rachel Collins is a must-read nonfiction book. The structure and clarity these concepts bring to readers, and the way the authors show readers how to approach these steps rather than just talk at the reader, make this a stunning book that readers can pick up and use as a reference time and time again. The Campfire Effect by Matthew Kaufman Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Matthew Kaufman shares the science and tools of building communities in the book “The Campfire Effect.”

Advertisements

The Synopsis

What if the secret to building stronger teams, closer families, and more connected classrooms has been hiding in plain sight for over a century?

For more than thirty years as a summer camp professional, Matt Kaufman has watched thousands of children transform from anxious strangers into lifelong friends in a matter of weeks. Along the way, he noticed something remarkable: camp wasn’t just creating memories. It was engineering belonging through a neurochemical process that most organizations stumble into by accident.

The Campfire Effect reveals the five-chemical framework behind that transformation: oxytocin for trust, dopamine for motivation, cortisol for resilience, serotonin for dignity, and endorphins for joy. Together, they form a flywheel that any leader, parent, or teacher can set in motion.

Most communities are accidental. Yours should be intentional.

Inside, you’ll discover:

• Why your workplace may be functioning as what psychologists call a “wire mother,” and what to do about it

• The surprising reason your best employees are leaving (it’s not the money)

• How a single three-word check-in can transform the culture of a team, a classroom, or a family dinner

• Why stress plus support equals growth, but stress alone equals damage

• What Google’s Project Aristotle and a cabin full of eleven-year-olds have in common

Each of the seventeen chapters ends with a Monday Morning Blueprint, giving you concrete tools for parents, managers, and teachers. The appendices include ready-to-use agreement templates, fifty questions to spark connection, a troubleshooting guide, and a one-page cheat sheet you can pin to your wall.

Whether you lead a team of five or a school of five hundred, The Campfire Effect gives you the science, the stories, and the step-by-step tools to build communities where people actually belong.

The Review

This felt like such a relatable, fun, and engaging read. The reality of many books on leadership, business, and life itself can feel too technical and data driven at times, and the experiences and stories the author brings to this book changes the formula greatly. The amount of research the author put into creating this book by including well-founded research and study on human brain chemistry and the impact of social interaction overall was astounding to see on the pages of this book.

The heart of the book was not in the science itself, but in the impact that science had on highlighting the importance of community as a whole. The emotional connection people make when they find their community, and the bonds that form between individuals in that community help motivate and inspire others in their everyday life, and the way the author is able to apply that through these composite figures they create to represent the people they’ve met over the years was inspired and highly creative. Insights into how quiet leadership can accomplish a great deal of things or how even technology like Zoom calls can become the modern-day equivalent of gathering around the campfire and exchanging stories is a testament to the way forming bonds can push people forward in life.

The Verdict

Insightful, compelling, and enthralling, author Matthew Kaufman’s “The Campfire Effect” is a must-read nonfiction book on leadership development, relationships, and the science of community. The depth of knowledge is well-balanced by the personal stories and experiences the author is able to relate that knowledge to, and will keep readers eager to use this book as a great reference book long after they have finished reading it. About the Author

Matt Kaufman trained as an engineer. He has spent over thirty years applying that discipline to the most complex system imaginable: human belonging. His laboratory is summer camp.

What began as a summer job became a lifelong study of what makes groups of strangers become families. As a camp director, Matt has watched thousands of children cross the threshold from fear to courage, from isolation to belonging. He has decoded the invisible architecture that made these transformations possible.

In The Campfire Effect, Matt translates the principles of camp into practical tools for leaders, educators, and families. He shows how to bring the warmth of the campfire into the cold of the conference room and the quiet of the kitchen table.

Matt continues to believe that every organization, every classroom, and every home can become an intentional community.

The Review

The straightforward, almost conversational tone the author took on from the first chapter of this book onward was a breath of fresh air in the nonfiction business genre. The exploration of AI not from a technical or critical point of view, but instead from a business and human perspective was a great direction to not only make the book stand out but the message as well. The research and knowledge the author took on and imparted to the reader was so insightful, and gave the readers a fresh new perspective on the topic.

The exploration of AI in business is a great direction to follow, and the author’s ability to highlight their experience in technology integration helped cement the knowledge that was being passed on. The failure of any technology, especially from a business perspective, is usually not the tech itself, but the lack of human integration with the tech. Training people and helping people to understand how the tech works often allows human resistance to change and fears of being replaced to become prominent, and keeps any company from growing in the right direction. This added an emotional and societal insight that is needed for both the technology and business as a whole to grow.

The Verdict

Memorable, honest, and compelling, author Rene Esteban’s “The Focused AI Captain” is a must-read nonfiction book that will stay with readers and give leadership a fresh new direction to help in the integration of this technology. The fast pacing of the book and the ability for readers to be able to return to this book time and time again for reference make this an essential read for business leaders looking to better understand how AI can be used in the coming years. Author Jeroen Derwort shares the way his passion for Soccer turned into an online empire in the book “SCORE!”

Jeroen Derwort was just a teenager when he started coding Online Soccer Manager (OSM) from his bedroom in The Netherlands. His dream? To let football fans experience the thrill of managing their favorite club.

He didn’t know he was building a global empire.

SCORE! takes you behind the scenes of a startup that exploded from a hobby project into a tech giant with fifty employees and millions of obsessed users worldwide. But this is more than a business book. It is the personal journey of a shy nerd who had to learn to lead, negotiate, and survive in the Champions League of the gaming industry.

From a lonely attic to the “Top 100 Self-Made Millionaires” list—this is the ultimate playbook for anyone who dares to dream big.

The Review

This was such a heartening and empowering read. The author found a great balance of passion for soccer, the gumption to strive out on his own to create a business for that passion, and the power that comes from finding your own community in the process. The insight into the lessons the author learned from a business perspective and the attention to detail the author poured into the book while maintaining a fairly fast pace was the perfect reading experience.

The heart of the story was in the author’s honest and personal writing style and the heartfelt connection the author made with readers. Many readers, especially those growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, will recognize the author’s feelings as they struggled with having a mind for education and what today is celebrated as nerdom, and yet back in the day was an isolating thing that kept most people alone amidst their student peers. The way the author used that feeling to not only find a community but build a business around it and the way each chapter also showcased how the author learned from each failure and venture into this online world made for a brilliant read.

The Verdict

Memorable, engaging, and thoughtfully written, author Jeroen Derwort’s “SCORE!” is a must-read nonfiction book on business and empowerment. The entrepreneurial spirit courses through every chapter of this book, and yet retains the heart and passion for the author’s special interest in soccer and the rich and recent history of online business building that allowed the author’s personal experiences to come across to readers in an impactful way. The Post-Managerial Era of Capitalism: Organizational Design as the Next Innovation Frontier (Elements in Reinventing Capitalism) by Hunter Hastings Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Hunter Hastings shows readers how old school business structures are being replaced by more innovative and constructive ideas in the book “The Post-Managerial Era of Capitalism.”

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Traditional business management was the machinery of control for industrial organizations that had sprawled beyond the oversight of their founders, an organizational innovation that became a profession and a science. The aim was the stability and predictability the financial sector demanded. But control brought increasing costs: (1) slow response to market changes, leaving established firms behind innovative newcomers; (2) bureaucratic inertia that strangled flexibility; (3) disengaged employees who felt their creativity and agility stifled. These failures weakened firms and lowered economic productivity. In the Kuhnian framework of scientific revolutions, the management paradigm entered crisis mode. Consistent with the Kuhnian framing, businesses are moving beyond management. Self-organization and enterprise flow are revolutionizing business models. Interconnected ecosystems replace bounded industries. Experimentation and feedback replace traditional strategic planning. Dynamic, autonomous teams replace hierarchies of authority. Liberated companies embrace dynamic cohesion rather than the rigidities of business administration. They operate in a post-managerial era.

The Review

This was a powerful, straightforward and insightful read. The author does a remarkable job of covering both the history of management from the nineteenth century factories to the modern day, as well as the new integrations of various technologies into the field. The level of detail and education the author is able to incorporate into the book was astounding considering the fast pacing of the book overall. The author’s writing style took on a commanding and informed tone throughout the book, allowing readers to feel engaged in honest discussion with the author rather than talked “at”.

The heart of this book was in the direct way of approach the author took to the subject matter and the emphasis on self management. The ability to move with the changing needs of a customer based and do so without constant overhead decisions slowing down the process is a valuable bit of knowledge for companies moving forward, as is the integration of technology like digital networks. The way emphasis is placed on elements such as empathy in a company’s hierarchy was inspiring as well, putting focus on the workers making a company successful instead of the 1% at the head of it all.

The Verdict

Memorable, thought-provoking, and enlightening, author Hunter Hasting’s “The Post Managerial Era of Capitalism” is a must-read nonfiction business book. The fast pace of the book’s core material, the use of diagrams and charts for educational purposes, and the ability to reference this book time and time again are just a few reasons why the author’s book works so well, and why the need to change perspectives on how to grow a business and manage it need to happen now. AudiobooksNow

The Review

Immediately, I was struck by how organized and detailed the book was. The author’s writing style is clear and pointed, giving readers immediate access to valuable insights that are geared towards career advancement. The fast pacing of the book and what I like to call the re-readability factor of this book, which showcases the knowledge that allows readers to go back time and time again to learn and adapt to new situations using tried strategies, was on full display in the author’s writing and kept readers fully engaged throughout the book.

The balance the author found in thorough guidance through each chapter and the steps found within, with the detailed evidence and tests the author provided to prove how these strategies work, was remarkable. Lessons such as engaging a unique personal brand that allows businesses to perceive you a certain way, to being able to convey specific ideas and knowledge through professional presentations in the workspace and so much more had a significant impact on the reader as the book progressed, and even touching upon how AI can be a helpful tool but is not in any way an answer or solution to a problem added depth to the author’s lessons overall.

The Verdict

Compelling, engaging, and thought-provoking, author Nicole Fronek’s “Corporate Coach Approach” is a must-read nonfiction book on business and career management. A fast-paced yet detailed and profound read, the author does a remarkable job of providing a grounded, deep guide to career growth and excellence that will inspire and educate readers equally. Operationally Svelte: Manage Costs to Increase Profit and Enhance Performance by Duane Deason Review

Author Duane Deason shares the practical use of a cost management center to make a company leaner and more profitable in the book “Operationally Svelte: Manage Costs to Increase Profit and Enhance Performance.”

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Operationally Svelte Unleashes Growth, Innovation, and Profit

An “operationally svelte” organization means it is lean, flexible, and efficient.

Organizational bloat creeps into companies as they grow. It dulls cutting-edge innovation, slows responses to changing economic conditions, whittles down profitability, and hinders growth. You will not curtail it by doing what you have always done. Companies need a new strategy.

In Operationally Svelte, author Duane Deason presents a refreshing approach to making an organization lean and unleashing its potential: create a Cost Management Center. Think of it this way—while your Sales team focuses on revenue, your Cost Management Center team focuses on managing and controlling costs throughout the organization.

Get step-by-step guidance to establish a Cost Management Center and eliminate the common culprits of waste and inefficiency. Then dive into strategies to maximize its effectiveness and transform your company for optimal performance, enhanced growth, superior innovation, and increased profit.

AudiobooksNow

The Review

This was such a powerful and insightful read for those in leadership roles within a business. The author found a great strategy that greatly balances the need to manage a business’s daily costs while also allowing staff to innovate and grow as a company. The author’s writing style is very detailed and practical, speaking to innovators and business leaders who have a firm grasp of the technical details but can connect with the author’s messaging and outline for the cost management center.

The concept of a svelte organization is a powerful one: running a lean, mean operation that improves sales and growth. Yet oftentimes, overreaching to cut costs inefficiently can stifle that growth. The author’s deep dive into the ways a cost management center would help create the necessary oversight over the expenses incurred by your business was remarkable to get into, from understanding the differences in costs per items/tasks, to tackling the use of technology and emerging AI, to creating a cost management center by finding key team members and outlining the responsibilities of the center going forward. The author also covers many areas in this realm, from those that incur higher costs to those on the horizon, giving readers a wealth of details to engage with.

The Verdict

Thoughtful, engaging, and memorable, author Duane Deason’s “Operationally Svelte” is a must-read nonfiction business read. The depth of information and the clear, precise way the author writes and conveys it through solid, insightful frameworks that business leaders can follow thoroughly. This is one book readers and leaders can return to time and time again for guidance. If you haven’t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!

About the Author

I am the author of Operationally Svelte: Manage Costs to Increase Profit and Enhance Performance. I wrote the book to take cost management out of the shadows, to explore why current strategies are failing, and to provide a more optimal solution. Companies owe their employees, customers, and shareholders an organization that is lean and best prepared to fend off competition, weather economic downturns, and adapt to organizational change. Svelte companies are not only more profitable but also experience a higher level of performance and innovation when compared to their peers.

I spend much of my time advocating, speaking, and educating on the topic of cost management. To pay the bills, I serve as President of The Efficacy Group, where I provide cost management advisory and consulting services. My early career was with PwC followed by starting my first business that provided financial support for companies undergoing transactions. After selling the business, I assumed the role of CFO at one of my former clients that was doing the typical titanic after the dot-com bust in the early 2000s. It was during that time as CFO when I fell in love with cost management. The feeling of saving a company from certain bankruptcy felt more rewarding than the prior acquisitions and initial public offerings that I had supported.

The last 25 years of my career have been dedicated to cost management in one form or another. I’ve had the privilege of working with many companies of varying sizes and industries. Through that, I observed patterns that resulted in success and others that led to deterioration. Among these patterns was the realization that companies that failed to prioritize cost management would eventually fail. Just like life, companies can’t outgrow their problems.
