The Synopsis

At some point in their lives, many women may question who they are meant to be or their purpose in life. While struggling with identity, women are often surrounded by messages telling them who they should be or what they should believe in based on the thoughts and opinions of others. But this is not who God says we are, and the world’s values are not up to God’s standards or what He expects of us.

In a thirty-one day devotional, Christian life coach and mentor, Dr. Robin Revis Pyke, leads women down an introspective path of self-discovery inspired by lasting biblical truths. While encouraging women to embrace God’s Word and promises, she offers daily inspiration that guides overwhelmed female souls to understand their true identity in Christ through a powerful message of hope that we are all loved, accepted, and chosen. Included are reflection and study questions that can also be utilized as journal prompts.

Your Identity in Christ is a thirty-one day devotional that takes women on a spiritual journey to understand and embrace their identities as beautiful, valuable daughters of God.

The Review

This was an engaging and thoughtful read for Christian and faith-based readers. The author does an incredible job of crafting a guide that is straightforward yet deep-thinking, giving readers time to contemplate and reflect on their lives and how it relates to their faith at the same time. The empathy and kindness that the author’s voice comes through in the writing are truly wonderful to see and provide a great environment for self-reflection.

To me, the heart of this book rested in the strong themes that this book put together in the guide, especially that of being true to yourself and not to the ideals society expects of you. While the author’s message rings true for those who are religious and is definitely geared towards women of that faith, the message overall can apply to everyone, giving women a chance to ignore the trends and expectations that are placed on them by an oftentimes unforgiving society and instead be the person they feel they truly are, which is a message everyone should hear.

The Verdict

Memorable, thoughtful, and engaging, author Robin Revis Pyke, Ph.D.’s “Your Identity in Christ” is a must-read nonfiction self-help and Christian women’s book that faith-readers will not want to put down. The depth of information and guidance will be a welcome delight for readers as they seek to balance their life with the expectations of their faith and God. The Dyatlov Pass Mystery: Not A Cold Case by Henning Kuersten Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Henning Kuersten uses new professional image analysis, video footage, and so much more to discuss and even debunk some of the theories surrounding one of mountaineering’s most haunting cases and works to discover the truth in the book “The Dyatlov Pass: Not a Cold Case”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Amazon Bestseller in History, Mountaineering and Expeditions

John Hay, Warner Brothers director and two-time EMMY award winner:

A definitive work on the case; convincing, well researched and played out with such conviction, that by the time I got to the end of the book I couldn’t think of any other solution to the mystery that remained plausible.

On 1. February 1959, a group of nine experienced hikers perished in -30° under mysterious, gruesome circumstances in the Ural mountain range, on the slope of Mount Kholat Syakhl, also referred to as “Dead Mountain” or “1079”. Three weeks after the incident, their abandoned but strangely intact tent was found, slashed open from the inside. The student hikers fled without proper clothing and boots to a ravine at the base of the mountain, where it seems they didn’t die from hypothermia alone, but from traumatic violent injuries and burns. Strange last photographs taken by the hikers and high levels of radiation found on some of their clothes have led to decades of speculation over what really happened.

The Dyatlov Pass mystery is one of the most perplexing mysteries in the international history of mountaineering, and probably the most controversial forensic crime case in Russia. But was it murder, KGB conspiracy, a rocket accident coverup or some unknown natural or supernatural force, like the “Gods in Shining Garments” which the local Mansi hunters mention, or the “fireballs” chief inspector Ivanov believed in up to his death? Are there undervalued or misunderstood eye witnesses of the tragedy, or has anyone even had a similar close encounter since, on that mysterious mountain of fire & ice, where compasses deviate more than 30°?

This gripping nonfiction documentary discusses and debunks multiple existing theories with the help of professional image analysis, rare video footage, eyewitness reports, previously misinterpreted evidence and Occam-style common sense. Through the help of science, the author unravels the secrets behind the fateful journey to that deadly mountain in the freezing Russian winter, and for the first time ties together all seemingly contradicting puzzle pieces into a big picture. Extensively illustrated with visual material, ranging from recovered film frames to newest amateur footage, the book leads the reader to the spectacular solution of the mystery. Which turns out to be surprisingly close to the initial official conclusion of “unknown compelling force”, but far from the better-than-nothing avalanche theory, which has seen a prominent renaissance after the 2020 Russian reopening of the case.

The author Henning Kuersten studied Computer & Information science at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, and Psychology at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada. He is owner of a company specialized in software for image analysis. He is also a dedicated mountaineer who has survived a horrific incident on the 4049 meter high Piz Bernina, which, together with his professional experience in Photography and Psychology, has helped him to understand the fate of the Dyatlov group.

The Review

This was a truly memorable and thought-provoking read. The blend of history and mystery that this case presents to the reader was well represented in this book. The author does a great job of presenting the facts of this case with precision and expertise, while also allowing room for profound thoughts and engaging theory work that the author gives to readers to touch upon the stranger aspects of this case.

The amount of research and discovery the author allows for in this book was remarkable to watch unfold. The images and pieces of evidence the author provides within this book help elevate the wild and chilling theories that are explored and debunked. The way the author brings to life science and history, along with the passion for mountaineering as a whole, made this a compelling read.

Thrilling, mindful, and engaging, author Henning Kuersten’s “The Dyatlov Pass Mystery: Not a Cold Case” is a must-read nonfiction book on mountaineering and world history. The Review

This was such an incredible blend of memoir and motivational writing. The balance the author found between their personal life and the experiences that helped shape them the career path that the author set herself and the struggles that helped teach the author how to move forward in that path were so inspiring. Getting to hear about the author’s upbringing and the hardships of life in an area of the world rife with crime and violence, and the hope that the author found in her father’s legacy as a Hollywood makeup artist to the stars were very uplifting to read about.

Yet it was the emphasis the author put on not only hope but on the determination it takes to face challenges head-on and the power that resides within us all to overcome any adversity that heads our way and instead achieve great things in spite of those hardships and struggles, that made this such a compelling read. The author finds a way of writing to a multitude of different kinds of readers, using her experiences to showcase how failure doesn’t have to be the end of the road and instead uses her life stories to act as a guide to anyone pursuing their dreams or even starting their own business.

The Review

This was a fast-paced yet insightful read. The author does an incredible job of not only presenting the reader with a quick rundown of the historical figures and their lives but of the lessons that can be taken from their lives in regard to a person’s personal growth. From overcoming adversity and demonstrating courage to promoting empathy and kindness, the lessons these figures have given to the world as a whole leave a major source of inspiration to us all.

For me, the way the author was able to give such a comprehensive list of historical figures and hone in on their achievements in both history and our personal lives made this such a compelling read. The impact these figures have had on history and our culture as a whole is well known, but we don’t often stop to think about how their lives can inspire us to change or grow as a person ourselves.

Two great examples of this are the pages dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr and Fred Rogers. Not only do these two figures represent a great mix of both culturally relevant figures and historical figures, but Dr. King showcased the resilience and courage it took to face oppression and lead the Civil Rights Movement through nonviolence rather than physical altercations, while Mr. Rodgers showed the value and importance of being kind to others and understanding a person’s struggles and hardships.

The Verdict

Thoughtful, memorable, and engaging, author Fadi Gorgies Toma’s “Lessons from the Greats” is a must-read nonfiction book on personal growth and history blended into one comprehensive guide. The thoughtfulness of the figures showcased in this book and the heart that went into the author’s research and philosophical approach to these fascinating figures made this a truly compelling book to get lost in. Interview with Author Greta Uehling

Greta Uehling, tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

As a young person, I was more drawn to paint brushes than pens. In college, however, I was lucky to have superb mentors who encouraged me find my own voice. I began to experience writing as a form of creativity that was both enjoyable and empowering.

I first became interested in eastern Europe through language and literature courses I took as an undergraduate. I was captivated by universal themes like love, loss, loyalty, and betrayal as seen through eastern European lenses. Those courses inspired me to participate in an exchange program in Ukraine, where I lived with a family and attended classes at the local university.

My experience in Ukraine opened my eyes to myriad themes that are relevant today including the differing interpretations of national history, the importance of a national language, and the damaging effects of human rights violations.

Since then, I have traveled and lived in eastern Europe and Central Asia extensively. I have gathered material in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Russia, Moldova and other countries.

Throughout my work, I have benefited enormously from the warmth, care, and support that people extended. That, too, kept me writing. In fact, Everyday War would not have been possible without Ukrainians’ willingness to speak with me about the difficult topic of war. For me, the publication of this book with Cornell University Press is accompanied by gratitude toward the many people who shared their thoughts and lives with me. It is a privilege – and a responsibility – to bring their stories to readers.

Advertisements

What inspired you to write your book?

I was inspired to write Everyday War by my experiences living and working in Ukraine. Interviews with people all across that country between 2015 and 2017 revealed civilians were engaging with the war in very conscious and creative ways. What struck me the most in that first phase of the war was that one of people’s greatest concerns was how friend and family relationships were being adversely affected by the war.

My research showed that in addition to the humanitarian crisis brought about by Russian aggression against Ukraine, there is a relational crisis characterized by families and friendships acquiring their own fault lines. This is important because as I describe in the book, personal relationships are usually treated as backdrops or tangents for the “real” action. The book illustrates that when kinship becomes “tactical,” to use my term from the book, it matters.

Get FREE SHIPPING on all custom printed books at BookBaby.

What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

Many readers will have heard about Ukrainian resilience in the face of Russian aggression. Everyday War: The Conflict over Donbas Ukraine unpacks the significance of this resilience as well as its limitations. The stories I tell in the book demonstrate, among other things, how the time-honored distinction between combatants and non-combatants is being eroded. What readers may be less likely to hear in the news is the tremendous cost of this resilience. I explain this in the book through personal stories that vividly dramatize the normalization of violence.

In short, I hope readers will take away a greater appreciation the significance of civilians during war.

What drew you into this particular genre?

I grew up in a very diverse neighborhood in Madison, Wisconsin near the University of Wisconsin where my father worked. Students from all over the world sat next to me at school, became my friends, and invited me to their homes. I think that experience primed me for later travel and fieldwork because I began to feel increasingly at home away from home.

Travel experiences became the basis of a career as a cultural anthropologist when I discovered I could have a profession centered in listening to peoples’ stories and learning about the world experientially. Perhaps a helpful way to think about what cultural anthropologists do is that they practice the art of stepping inside other peoples’ worlds to experience them from within.

What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

Well, I am still in the early days of promoting the book and my preference is subject to change. Recently, I’ve been most effective on Twitter. If readers want to find me there, the correct handle is @uehlingumiched1. My tweets on book-related events and also humanitarian and human rights news have garnered positive responses. In the future, I hope to reach a larger audience on Instagram. If readers are interested in following me there, they can find me at greta.uehling.

ABN Banner

What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Aspiring writers will likely already have learned that it is a good practice to write every day. I agree and there are so many ways to make writing a habit, from journaling to sharing “morning pages,” and participating in writers’ groups. Advice aspiring writers may not have heard is to think about writing as a physical activity in addition to a cerebral one. My best strategy for easing the mental gridlock that can set in with long hours at a computer is to walk, run, or cycle. Fresh ideas then come easily, providing solutions to writing problems that are harder to resolve behind a desk. A related strategy is to try pen and paper. Our brains are connected to our hands and there is abundant scientific evidence that shows the benefits of writing by hand. Far from slow or primitive, writing by hand can unlock thinking.

What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

Yes, and thank you for asking. I’m working on a book manuscript about what it means to be indigenous in Ukraine. Like my current book, Everyday War, my forthcoming book will have significance beyond Ukraine. A major theme in this work is the importance of political recognition for indigenous rights, and how humanitarian “politics of pity” aren’t enough to truly advance indigenous interests. I’ve been especially inspired by the writing of indigenous scholars in Canada during this project. I’m looking forward to the future publication of the manuscript because I have greatly enjoyed connecting with the readers of Everyday War. I can’t wait to share my next book with readers when its ready!

About the Author

Greta Uehling began her career by working directly with refugees, helping them find work in the United States. Her experiences in refugee resettlement motivated her to pursue a PhD in cultural anthropology, and have informed her career ever since.

After earning her PhD, she became a consultant with the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) in Geneva, Switzerland, working in the Evaluation and Policy Analysis Unit. Her work on irregular migration there led to another migration-related position as a Family Reunification Coordinator for minors smuggled across United States borders from Latin America and China, in Washington, DC.

Named after the globe-trotting Swedish actress Greta Garbo, she has traveled and worked in many regions. Her interviewees have often remarked about the rapport they feel during conversations. Her colleagues in anthropology note how this rapport, and Uehling’s writing, centers previously unheard voices.

With her current project, Uehling sought to tell the story of internal displacement in Ukraine in a way that is multivocal. She uses the language of lived experience to take readers on a journey through Ukraine that deepens understanding and solidarity.

Uehling dedicated Everyday War to her students because they inspire her to write with their many and insightful questions.

The Review

This was a well-written and captivating book. The author does an incredible job of showcasing the art of improvisation to its fullest. It was great to see the author not just lay out the work that goes into improv in an almost monotone style of education but rather blended a small amount of storytelling and experience into the book before highlighting each exercise and technique that went into the study of improv.

Yet despite all of the techniques showcased, it was the impact improv has on the reader that really made this a standout book. Rather than hone in on the performative aspect of the art of improv for comedians or performers in general, the book does a remarkable job of showcasing how this art form can help improve the lives of those who struggle with communication and expression overall. Whether you have always had a lifelong case of shyness or suffer from extreme social anxiety, these exercises can help expand the mind and find new ways of expression that can help improve your life in social, business, or professional circumstances.

The Verdict

Memorable, interactive, and educational, author Keith Saltojanes’s “The Improv Mindset” is a must-read nonfiction book on self-improvement, improv, and business. The Review

One of the first things that stood out to me was how much the book honed in on the ways in which women are impacted by the financial world and how women are treated in the world of finances as a whole. Like so many areas of life, finances have been deemed “male-dominated” by so many people over the years. Far too often women are overlooked or put aside by men when it comes to how households handle their financial situations. The relatability of the author’s writing and the realistic tone the experiences the author deals with take will strike a chord with many readers, especially women.

The other thing that really stood out to me was the author’s approach to finances overall. Rather than writing in a way that sounds like a financial advisor, the author approaches this from an educational point of view, blending personal experiences with the lessons learned from those experiences. The emphasis is put on everything from being open to learning about the way money works and the importance of investments to increase one’s wealth, to focus on what you can control financially and the impact taking control of one’s finances can have on other areas of life made this book stand out in a unique way.

The Synopsis

“Tales of My Baseball Youth; A child of the 60’s” is a wonderful compilation of stories about growing up in the socially changing 1960’s. While the title suggests a sports book, “Tales” is actually a book about relationships which just happens to have baseball as a common thread. Bob Brill gives credit to his childhood school teachers, coaches, parents, schoolmates and professional players who made great impressions and left everlasting memories as well as helping shape him from a little boy who loved baseball to a successful and award winning journalist.

The Review

This was a captivating and heartfelt read. The author did an amazing job of capturing a tone that harkened back to the days of childhood memories, fresh-cut grass, and the crack of a bat hitting a baseball out of the park. The imagery the author’s memories conjured up really spoke to both the time and setting of the book, and did a great job of invoking an emotional response within the reader.

To me, the heart of this book rested in the relationships and connections the author’s memories and experiences brought to life. The relatability and emotional journey the reader goes on and the people that impacted the author’s life made for some thrilling and captivating storytelling. The way each story touched upon both the relatable moments of growing up and both the happy and sad moments of growing up and our bond to one another were so thoughtfully written out, and the thread of baseball that ran through it all kept the reader invested in the author’s story.

The Verdict

Memorable, engaging, and thoughtful, author Bob Brill’s “Tales of My Baseball Youth: A Child of the 60’s” is a must-read nonfiction and memoir-style book. The fast pace of the narrative and the heartfelt relatability of the author’s stories will instantly draw readers In, as will the rich connection to baseball and the great American Pastime.
