The Review

A truly inspiring story, the author does a remarkable job of finding the right balance by exploring how these amazing animals not only helped in everyday life but also gave mental and emotional support in their years together with Michael. The relatability of the author’s life that so many readers will be able to connect with, and the honest and connective way the authors write this book, allows the readers to feel as if they are in an in-depth conversation with them, the book’s chapters expressing both the lighthearted and the more somber moments and memories the authors lived through.

A big theme that I truly appreciated as a reader was the author’s bringing to light of ableism, and how people with disabilities are treated, perceived, and interacted with in society as a whole. As a disabled person, it is the heart and honesty the authors write with that resonated the most, and, as someone passionate about animals in general, I found the author perfectly captures the routines, mindsets, and experiences these beautiful creatures give to Michael throughout his life.

The Verdict

Memorable, thoughtful, and compelling, authors Michael Hingson and Keri Wyatt Kent’s “Live Like a Dog” is a must-read nonfiction inspirational book on living life with disabilities and the lessons animals, especially guide dogs, can teach a person going through hardships in life. The insight, the powerful writing style the author utilized, and the heartfelt connection the author felt with these beautiful animals and what they taught him will resonate deeply with readers. Interview with Author Airie McCready

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

I started writing at the age of seven. We were given a poetry assignment in class, and I never stopped! My first poem was about a greyhound. I was fascinated with dogs and fairies, and the sighthounds (greyhounds, salukis, whippets, Irish wolfhounds, Scottish deerhounds), anything with those long, tapered legs that could run so fast.

My second poem was slightly better. Golden Fawn was the title; I composed it upon the death of my beautiful golden hamster. Writing about animals that I loved, or that were a part of my life, just came naturally to me. The imaginary kingdom that most people couldn’t see started weaving itself into my writing very young as well.

Advertisements

2) What inspired you to write your book?

Every single poem or story, photograph, or drawing in this book is heartfelt. Again, my beautiful pets cross back and forth to the ether realm, making pictures of themselves in the sky or even in my bedroom. Their births, lives, and deaths are commemorated here. Often, instead of saying, “I wrote a poem,” I’ll say, “I poemed,” like giving birth to a piece of writing.

Inspiration comes from intense emotions, whether it’s about a pet or something I’ve experienced in my life — unfortunately, a lot of abuse — but out of that is born writing that can help others.

3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

That it’s okay to feel deeply about your pets, whether they’re a cat or a dog, hairless or furred, people are beginning to understand that it’s okay to grieve for a pet like you would for a person. A relationship between two species possesses inherent magic; so it’s okay to give voice to that magic and the love that you have for your cat, dog, horse, or whatever. Animals are children, too.

4) What drew you into this particular genre?

Initially, I frowned upon long writing assignments; writing a poem, a short essay, or a story was easier for me. Now I have the freedom to write whatever I wish, but I value poetry’s capacity to traverse lifetimes, periods, or annum, truly anything. I love finding the words to express exactly what I’m feeling or what I want others to feel.

5) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

Facebook is number one for me. From 2013 to lockdown, I had a store online that made clothing for cats. My wish remained to write, though the garments rose in popularity, restricting my availability, leaving no time for writing. So, what I would do is, when I felt something forming in my mind, I would type it into my Facebook feed and see what kind of response it’d get. A lot of it got an excellent response. I waited, confirming that it was not simply loved ones offering praise, but those I admired and respected who offered honest praise. Then my Facebook followers kept saying that I should make a book or a coffee table book because they also liked my photography and art. This took years to bring together, so this debut is for my followers.

6) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

This is one of the most challenging questions I get asked, because we’re all very different. I would say, find your voice first. Don’t copy others except if you like the cadence they’re using in their poem. You can use it in yours, but don’t steal. For instance, I tried to write a vampire story, and I love Anne Rice, but it started sounding too much like her voice and not mine. So, I stopped, and I do have a novella coming out now, working title: Bella and Lee and Me. It has immortal creatures, some that you’ve never heard of before, and a lot of spiritual, but differently stated storylines that are truly my own.

Find a Facebook group that has a lot in common with your tastes, and you can show them something that you’ve written, but be sure to write all rights reserved and your name underneath.

7) What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

I have several new books and development poetry books, one a novel, one a novella, all almost all the way finished. I have several chronic diseases, which limit me in my day-to-day life and in my writing as well. However, writing is something I continue to do, whether by typing or using speech to text.

Aber Stoat, my publisher, is wonderful for working with indie authors and has been great with me.

The Review

This was such a heartfelt and compelling read. While a short book, the author’s words and message pack an emotional punch that any pet parents or animal advocates will instantly understand. The poignant, often introspective yet heartfelt messages of hope that these passages bring to life on the page for readers are both reflective of life as a whole and strike a resonating chord for those of us who have both lost and loved pets throughout our lives.

The themes and messages this story plays with are memorable, from taking the time to live in the moment and utilizing our dog’s ability to stay grounded to remember that, to taking the time to pause what we are doing and take in our surroundings, much like our dogs do when they stare out a window or go on a walk. The author’s ability to offer daily prompts to help promote these ideas, combined with the reflective nature of these passages, will keep readers engaged throughout the book.

Let’s Go Backer and Backer: The Playful Puppy by Maureen Devlin Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Readers are shown how a young girl and her puppy came together in author Maureen Devlin’s “Let’s Go Backer and Backer: The Playful Puppy.”

Advertisements

The Synopsis

In this heartwarming, rhythmic tale, a young girl adopts a playful puppy she loves with all her heart. Starting from the kindness of strangers who rescued the puppy, to the caring staff and veterinarian at the shelter, each page takes readers one step further back in the story. With each repeated refrain, children see the chain of compassion and care that brought the girl and her puppy together. From puppy park adventures to the puppy’s safe arrival at the shelter, this cumulative story celebrates love, community, and the joy of adoption.

Why This Book Benefits Children

  • Teaches empathy and kindness – By tracing the puppy’s journey from rescue to adoption, children learn how many caring people play a role in helping animals.
  • Builds sequencing and memory skills – The repetitive, cumulative structure helps children anticipate what comes next, reinforcing comprehension and recall.
  • Encourages a sense of community – The story shows how teamwork and compassion create happy endings.
  • Fosters a love of animals – It naturally introduces the concepts of pet adoption and responsible pet care in a gentle, engaging way.

How Parents Can Use This Book

  • Read aloud for rhythm and repetition – The patterned text invites children to join in, making reading interactive and fun.
  • Discuss each role in the story – Ask questions like, “What did the veterinarian do?” or “Who found the puppy first?” to build understanding of cause and effect.
  • Connect to real-life experiences – If you have a pet, talk about its adoption story, or consider visiting a local animal shelter together.
  • Encourage kindness projects – Use the story as a starting point for discussing ways to help animals or people in need in your community.

The Review

This was a fast-paced yet engaging children’s book. The author did an incredible job of utilizing bright and colorful imagery with heartfelt and sentimental storytelling. The writing speaks to young children and parents alike, and creates an emotional connection between the two that makes for a unique reading experience.

What stood out to me was the theme and story behind The Playful Puppy. The author did an incredible job of walking readers through the process of what puppies go through when they are adopted, from the discovery of the puppy by good Samaritans to the vets and custodians who care for the puppy and their environment in the shelter, and finally, the person who gives them a forever home. The backwards style of storytelling, going back in time essentially to show this process, was very creative as well.

Heartfelt, engaging, and thoughtfully curated, author Maureen Devlin’s “Let’s Go Backer and Backer: The Playful Puppy” is a must-read children’s book. The heart and passion for pet adoption this story brings to life, and the way the book’s imagery and emotional connection bring parents and children together will keep readers coming back to this book time and time again. The Review

This was such a unique and compelling read. The balance between the author’s moving poetry and exploration of what makes these two specific types of cats so fascinating, combined with the beautiful and focused imagery of the photographs, made this book a truly memorable read. The creativity and artistry of the poems themselves brought their own sense of imagery to the page, infusing heart and emotion that speaks to anyone who has ever felt the call or been a pet parent in their lives.

The realism of the photography and the way these beautiful cats popped off the page was incredible. The Review

As a pet parent myself, I instantly identified with the author’s collection of stories from some pet parents who felt that same emotional connection to their pets as I do to mine. The honesty and depth of each story were greatly reflected in the author’s writing style, allowing these memories and experiences to come to life in a unique way.

The emotional core of this story rests in the shared memories they have with their animals. I know better than most the pain and devastating feeling that losing a beloved pet can have on you, and the author was able to dive into that element of being a pet parent with grace and heart that allowed the reader to feel those emotions as well. The author was able to find their voice in these stories as well, allowing the subject of each story to have their moment in the sun while also bringing her own heart and experiences to the stories.

The Verdict

Memorable, heartfelt, and engaging, author Kim Lengling’s “Paw Prints on the Couch” is a must-read nonfiction book on pet care and pet parenting. The passion and emotion with which the author brought these stories to life and the balance of heartbreak and heartfelt storytelling made this a compelling read. Running with Roselle by Michael Hingson and Jeanette Hanscome Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A man blind from birth and a young Golden Retriever puppy come together, never knowing they would capture the world’s attention by achieving the impossible and surviving one of the United States deadliest terrorist attacks in author Michael Hingson and Jeanette Hanscome’s “Running with Roselle”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

A puppy who became a true American hero. The blind boy who let nothing stop him. When they finally grew up and met, it was magic. On September 11, 2001, a blind man escaped the World Trade Center by walking down 78 flights of stairs with his guide dog. Days later, America fell in love with Mike and Roselle, and the special bond that helped them survive. Mike shared his story in the New York Times bestselling book, Thunder Dog.

Now, in Running With Roselle, kids can follow Roselle as she grows from an energetic yellow Lab prone to stealing her puppy raiser’s slippers to a confident guide dog who passes the ultimate test when her partner needs her most. Meet Mike, a boy blind from birth who excels in public school, shocks the neighbors by riding his bicycle through the streets of Palmdale, CA, drives a car around his college campus, and uses his relationship of trust and teamwork with Roselle to help others on a day that changed America forever.

The Review

As an eleven-year-old boy, I remember waking up on September 11th, in the hours before the rest of my family woke, and I watched from my home in Southern California as the attacks on the World Trade Center took place. The fear and anxiety that I felt at that moment, as well as the heartbreak at the people hurt or worse in those attacks being played over and over again on TV, broke my heart and made me cling to my family more than ever before. Yet I always have known that I could never hold a candle to the people who experienced that day firsthand or the families of those who were affected by that terrible day.

The authors did such an amazing job of finding the right balance between the grim reality of that day’s events with the more detailed backstory of both Mike and Roselle. The creative direction this nonfiction read took by sharing both Mike and Roselle’s perspectives and histories was great to read, as it gave a depth of character to the nonfiction events playing out over the narrative.

Yet what really struck me was the harmonic way the author shared multiple themes and stories with the audience. The overall theme of Mike and Roselle’s fight to survive that horrible attack was the prevailing story here, but the authors hone in on Mike and Roselle’s developing relationships, as well as the process of becoming a guide dog and the things that people born or made blind want the world to know and understand through Mike’s backstory, made this such a well-rounded narrative overall.

The Verdict

Haunting, chilling, and engaging, authors Michael Hingson and Jeanette Hanscome’s “Running with Roselle” is a must-read book. Terrifying yet inspiring, the authors not only highlight the pain, the struggle, and the horrors of that awful day, but show the camaraderie, strength, and courage it took for not only Mike and Roselle to survive the events but how they helped others and bonded with other survivors to get out of the building before it was too late. The Review

This was a truly thought-provoking and engaging read. The author perfectly balanced the book with memoir-style storytelling of his personal experiences with his own pet with the teachings and instructions that these experiences gained him and that he has imparted onto the reader. The descriptive nature of the author’s writing really helped visualize the steps the author mentions in this read and helps illustrate the mindset that readers should take with this subject.

What was so fascinating to me was the genre of this nonfiction read overall. As a lifelong pet parent and lover of animals in general, it was incredible to listen to the author’s insights into the relationship between humanity and their canine companions, as well as the way these majestic creatures communicate with each other and us as well.

The Verdict

A brilliant, thoughtful, and highly educational read, author Jesse Sternberg’s “Enlightened Dog Training” is a must-read nonfiction book for pet parents and animal enthusiasts this fall. With the pandemic forcing many people to stay home far more often than before, and the everyday routine with our pets changing along with it, it is so insightful to see the author’s perspective on dog training, parenting, and developing that bond between each other in this quick and engaging read.
