Reviving Our Republic: 95 Theses for the Future of America by Mike Bedenbaugh Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Mike Bedenbaugh lays the groundwork for political reform in the United States in the book “Reviving Our Republic: 95 Theses for the Future of America.”

The Synopsis

From Founding Principles to Future Promise: 95 Theses to Reinvigorate America for the 21st Century

The United States is in a partisan gridlock. As our constitutional principles erode away and the decline of civic engagement threatens the foundation of American democracy, navy veteran turned preservation leader Michael Bedenbaugh presents a compelling vision for the future of our country.

Reviving Our Republic: 95 Theses for the Future of America is a bold blueprint for addressing the most pressing challenges facing our nation today. Drawing inspiration from Martin Luther’s historic call for reform, Bedenbaugh offers a dynamic framework for political reform, reinterpreting founding principles for modern 21st-century challenges. Grounded in lessons across history from the warnings in Washington’s Farewell Address to the Citizens United decision of 2010 that enabled influence of corporations on policy, Reviving Our Republic is a fresh, nonpartisan approach to restructuring American governance, with 40 actionable proposals aimed at fostering a more responsive, accountable government.

In this blend of practical experience and scholarly insight, readers will learn:

  • Proposals to reform the electoral system, including instituting term limits and Electoral College reform.
  • Strategies to curb corporate influence in politics and strengthen individual liberty.
  • A plan to restore the balance between federal and state powers, reviving true federalism in our national government.
  • Methods to ensure fiscally responsible governance and address the national debt crisis.
  • Ways to realign foreign policy with America’s founding principles of neutrality in world affairs without hiding under isolationism.

Reviving Our Republic is not a critique of our political climate—it’s a call to action for engaged citizens who yearn for meaningful change. Whether you’re a concerned voter, community leader, or a student of politics, history, and economics, this book is a radical approach to reform that will inspire you to engage in America’s path forward as a united nation.

The Review

What an insightful and engaging read. The author’s approach to this subject matter from a purely non-partisan and historical standpoint was refreshing and insightful. The focus on the divisiveness and struggles that come with partisan politics and how it negatively impacts the stability of a democracy was incredible, presenting seemingly inspiring yet straightforward and evolved concepts that could better benefit society. The use of historical context in understanding how partisan politics failed various societies over time was terrific, playing into the idea that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

The juxtaposition of the flaws in our Founding father and their ability to recognize that in the formation of the nation versus the weaknesses in the current political climate and their inability to see past their vitriol was well presented throughout this book. What resonated was the idea of the Founding Fathers recognizing the natural evolution of a society and deeming it necessary to leave room for the Constitution to be amended or changed, which is often overlooked in our modern world. This type of logic fuels the author’s thesis and academic and philosophical approaches to this subject matter.

The Verdict

Insightful, engaging, and thoughtfully written, author Michael Bedenbaugh’s “Reviving Our Republic” is a must-read nonfiction book on politics, history, and the evolution of society as a whole. The call for honorable politics and a need to end attack-based election cycles and focus on the actual needs of the people instead was both inspiring and exemplary, and serves as a broader discussion readers can have going forward. How Schools Make Race: Teaching Latinx Racialization in America by Laura C. Chavez-Moreno Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Laura C. Chavez-Moreno shares with readers how race and racism take shape in schools in the book “How Schools Make Race: Teaching Latinx Racialization in America.”

Advertisements

The Synopsis

An investigation into how schooling can enhance and hinder critical-racial consciousness through the making of the Latinx racialized group

In How Schools Make Race, Laura C. Chávez-Moreno uncovers the process through which schools implicitly and explicitly shape their students’ concept of race and the often unintentional consequences of this on educational equity. Chávez-Moreno sheds light on how the complex interactions among educational practices, policies, pedagogy, language, and societal ideas interplay to form, reinforce, and blur the boundaries of racialized groups, a dynamic which creates contradictions in classrooms and communities committed to antiracism.

In this provocative book, Chávez-Moreno urges readers to rethink race, to reconceptualize Latinx as a racialized group, and to pay attention to how schools construct Latinidad (a concept about Latinx experience and identity) in relation to Blackness, Indigeneity, Asianness, and Whiteness. The work explores, as an example, how Spanish-English bilingual education programs engage in race-making work. It also illuminates how schools can offer ambitious teachings to raise their students’ critical consciousness about race and racialization.

Ultimately, Chávez-Moreno’s groundbreaking work makes clear that understanding how our schools teach about racialized groups is crucial to understanding how our society thinks about race and offers solutions to racial inequities. The book invites educators and scholars to embrace ambitious teaching about the ambivalence of race so that teachers and students are prepared to interrogate racist ideas and act toward just outcomes.

The Review

It is no secret that we live in a very tumultuous time. So many injustices are co-occurring, both abroad and in the United States. Without getting political, it is impossible not to recognize the moral failing in recent events in Los Angeles, and as a U.S. Citizen who is of both Caucasian and Hispanic descent, it has never been more clear that educating future generations on Latin culture and creating a better understanding of not only the cultures but the roles social justice plays in our society is essential, and that is the role this book plays for educators and students alike.

Immediately, what stands out is the accessibility of the material in this book. The author showcases a depth of research and expertise that speaks to the importance and relevance of this material, speaking on race, education, and language skills that need to be vital tools in educating future generations. The author introduces concepts and terminology that can benefit educators, from racialization to Latinidad and so much more, allowing the reader to better understand how to navigate bilingual education and how it is meshed together with social and racial justice.

The Verdict

Insightful, engaging, and vital to today’s cultural and social injustices, author Laura Chavez-Moreno’s “How Schools Make Race” is a must-read nonfiction education book on philosophy, morality, and multicultural studies. The insights, detail, and passion with which the author wrote this book and the depth it explores showcase the importance and struggle of this subject matter and why future generations need to better understand the integral nature of multicultural education. I Was Born in the Forest by Otis L. Lee Jr Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Otis L Lee Jr shares the story of the town of Palmares, a settlement established in the mountains of Brazil for Africans who escaped enslavement in the 17th century to form their own Afrocentric community and hold onto their freedom in the book “I Was Born in the Forest.”

Advertisements

The Synopsis

I Was Born in the Forest encapsulates the freedom struggle of Africans brought to the Americas in the bowels of slave ships from Congo, Angola, and other parts of Central Africa. In the seventeenth century, many defied the odds by escaping and establishing Afrocentric communities in the mountains in Brazil. Palmares, the most notable among them, existed from 1605 to 1694.

Palmares was the forerunner of Black towns in America, and its mesmerizing leader, Zumbi, belongs among the pantheon of heroic African-descended leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Francois Dominique Toussaint Louverture, and many others. He and his people rose from nothing in a hostile, foreign land to create an enduring Black republic in colonial Brazil.

Palmares and Zumbi have become transcendent icons of hope, perseverance, and the tenacity of African-descended people and all colonialized peoples who strive for and refuse to accept anything but unfettered freedom. Through a mix of travelogue and history, their story comes alive.

The Review

This was such an insightful and engaging read. The author was able to both entertain and educate readers on a subject that is so very rarely discussed, honing in on the African communities established in other countries such as Brazil during a time when so many were taken and enslaved in what would become the United States. The level of detail the author provides gives such a clear picture of the impact slavery had on everyone, especially in South American countries like Brazil, including elements such as the impact religion had on both those brought in as slave labor and the slavers themselves.

What stood out to me was something the author touched upon early on in the book, which was the assertion that African slave labor brought into the Americas was all docile and compliant to their captors, when in reality, that was not the case. The fight and actions of the community of Palmares, especially their final leader Zumbi, were not only inspiring to an entire community of people, but the author also explored in depth how these actions created myths and legends that would help inspire future battles for freedom and independence.

The Verdict

Powerful, educational, and insightful, author Otis L Lee Jr’s “I Was Born in the Forest” was a must-read nonfiction history book. The reality is this information isn’t the kind of education taught widely in schools, especially in our modern world, where education regarding this subject matter is being heavily censored, and the wealth of information and guidance this bit of history can provide the rest of the world is more important than ever before. Published in 2019’s “The Last Train From Djibouti”, the story begins from an unassuming, yet metaphorical, location: a train voyage originating in Charlottesville, Virginia, bound for New York City’s Penn Station. For Otis, this journey recalls another train’s journey from distant times in a location many miles from home. Drawing inspiration from the accounts of Dr. Michelle Palmer Lee and her mentor, Dr. Harriett F. Karuhije, “The Last Train From Djibouti” brings us alongside these two women on a transformative odyssey, each embarking independently to the Motherland, spurred by a resolute desire to connect with Africa and self discovery. By artfully expositing passages from Michelle’s journal and Harriett’s recounting, Otis portrays a microcosm of the African-American struggle to unearth roots within a culture that underwent upheaval, crossed oceans and emerged anew.

Coming in 2024, Otis Lee’s latest title “Black Spartacus, I Was Born in the Forest: A Traveler’s Guide to Quilombo, Maroon Societies in Brazil” embodies the struggle for liberty by Africans who were transported to the Americas aboard slave ships, hailing from regions like Congo, Angola, and other parts of Central Africa.

The Trump Diaries 2024 (An Oh Daddy Chronicles Satire) by Barry Robbins Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

The secret diaries of former President Trump are discovered in the ashes of The Great Fire at Mar-A-Lago in author Barry Robbins‘ latest political satire, “The Trump Diaries 2024”, the latest in the Oh Daddy Chronicles Satires series.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

It’s the year 2024. Mar-a-Lago has been destroyed by the Great Fire. Combing through the rubble, investigators make a startling discovery – the Diary of Donald J. Trump for the year 2024. Eloquently translated from Trump-speak into real English by a woke translator hired by the ex-President, these 87 diary entries contain the nuggets of wisdom that Trump was able to muster over the course of the year as he navigated political and personal challenges that he barely understood, let alone overcome.

Who knew he had such pithy wisdom to impart? Who knew he had the discipline to keep a diary? For that matter, who knew he could even write? Startling revelations, the challenges of everyday life, missing documents, Wordle, smoothies, running mates, harmonicas, it’s all there – naked – for all to see in this unique political satire. Mark Twain meets Donald Trump in The Trump Diaries 2024.

The Review

This was such a hilarious and brilliant read. The author does an incredible job of capturing the voice and mannerisms of the former president. The humor that is infused into the author’s writing allows for the hypocrisy and ridiculous actions that the former President to be presented in a clear and hilarious light. The fictional aspects of the narrative that fast-forward to a possible future are both funny and yet chilling all at once, and give insight into the direction our nation is heading as a whole.

The way in which the author wrote is something that has entertained and captured my attention throughout his entire political satire series. The “diary” style of writing allows the author to showcase the public perception of Trump’s innermost thoughts, and how he perceives the world around him. The commentary on Putin and his inability to accept reality were especially biting and hilarious to read, as it speaks to the delusional state of Trump and his allies as a whole in regard to the 2020 election.

The Verdict

Funny, witty, and thought-provoking, author Barry Robbins’s “The Trump Diaries 2024” is a must-read political satire book. The charm and caricature of the former president speak to the tensions and concerns so many have as the nation becomes more and more politically charged, and the author’s writing speaks both to the inspirations of SNL and MAD magazine-style comedy and to the insightfulness into our nation’s politics. Bad Deal For America by David D. Schein Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author David D. Schein shows readers how members of Congress are currently utilizing taxpayers’ dollars in the book “Bad Deal for America”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Bad Deal for America explores the high-stakes game U. S. politicians are playing with the taxpayers’ money. The major players, themselves like a deck of cards, have shown us in their own words that the political system is broken. Readers can follow the money to see how some have lived high on the hog while masquerading as public servants. Told in an entertaining and unique way, this book is a call to arms to fulfill the ideals of the founding fathers by holding the political class responsible.

The Review

The author did a great job of delving deep into the murky waters of the American political system. Namely the members of congress, this book did a great job of maintaining a neutral point of view as far as party lines are concerned, showing the corruption and greed that exists on both sides of the aisle.

The thing that stood out to me as a reader was the balance of research and study that went into the campaign finance system and the money earned and spent by the political machine, and the quotes and viewpoints of various politicians mentioned throughout this book. The author was able to present clear and concise facts about these politicians without getting bogged down in specific political preferences and presented clear and well-researched arguments based on the words and actions of the individual politicians mentioned in this book.

The Verdict

Thoughtful, engaging, and captivating, author Dr. David D. Schein’s “Bad Dead for America” is a must-read political book of 2022. The evenly paced tempo of the book and the amount of research that could be found on each page of this book made it a thought-provoking read that will open up reader’s minds to the facts surrounding each politician’s promises, lies, and financial gains through their work in Washington, as well as its impact on the average American citizen. Ethosism: Self-Enslavement Abolitionist Manifesto by Jo M. Sekimonyo Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Jo M. Sekimonyo takes readers on a journey to explore a way of leaving behind the inequalities of capitalism through a new system meant for the 21st century, Ethosism, in the book “Ethosism: Self-Enslavement Abolitionist Manifesto by Jo M. Sekimonyo”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

In the global environment of trade and commerce, humankind appears to have given up its natural journey of progression to improve the social order and universally accepted capitalism. But, whilst the richest continue to accumulate vast amounts of wealth, inequality grows and the poorest still live in extreme poverty. This passionate, academic study will go on to present that socialism is just another means of enslaving society under the capitalist model. So, is there a new social, political, and economic arrangement that fits the twenty-first century reality? Ethosism looks at the fact that in the twenty-first century more people than ever before have the means to acquire and own their means of engagement, participation, or involvement in an enterprise. As the result, capitalism, socialism, and communism have lost their raison d’etres.

By examining the foremost upheavals of the twenty-first century, wealth inequality and climate change, plus social class conflicts resulting from the paradigm shift, my conviction is that we are in dire need of a morales nuvem consensus which will herald new social, commerce, intermerce, and political covenants that will enable us to successfully traverse the twenty-first century and beyond.

The Review

This was such an incredibly moving and thought-provoking read. Immediately what stood out to me from the author’s writing was how one of the first lessons taught is how far too little morality is brought into the conversation regarding the economy and wealth as a whole. The capitalist nature that puts the self above all else and leaves behind those who fight to survive and can’t make any headway is something that has weighed on me for a long time, and reading the author’s words was powerful and fantastic to behold.

The exploration of not only why systems like capitalism and socialism don’t work in our modern age and are only hurting our current system, but the author’s ability to thoughtfully and honestly present a new approach to wealth and class systems as a whole through Ethosism was amazing to read. I was immediately struck by the balance of philosophy the author brought into the discussion of politics and economics throughout the book, and the writing style itself was so remarkable, as it moved smoothly from an almost poetic-like writing style to engaging non-fiction reading at its best.

The Verdict

Thoughtful, educational, and moving, author Jo M. Sekimonyo’s “Ethosism: Self-Enslavement Abolitionist Manifesto” is a must-read book on how to shape our society to fit the time that we are living in. The need for change has never been greater, and the only way a society can grow and prosper is by moving forward, not looking back to systems that no longer function. About the Author

Jo M. Sekimonyo is a theorist, human rights activist, political economist, and social philosopher. He is a Congolese born, American fermented and globally bottled Merchant of Ideas. He has been a strong critic of mainstream economists stating that, “these clown shows chip away the substance of economic disparity dialogues”.

On the Labor Theory of Value, Sekimonyo argues that in the twenty-first century, instead of the average number of labor hours, the quality of the means nested in an enterprise to produce a commodity or provide a service establishes relative prices.

In this context, labor is no longer viewed as a cost but one of the profiteers, as it ought to be. The working class is no longer a cost but one of the profiteers, as it should be.

Much of his writing has been concerned with “economic injustice, poverty, and egalitarianism”.

His work has been translated into over ten languages.

Sekimonyo argues that the ability of individuals to understand the world and creatively respond to challenges that confront humanity is key to alleviate poverty. He facilitates several workshops and seminars every year throughout the developing world geared towards stimulating debates around global social issues and mainstream economic theories.

He is the founder of “En Charge”, an independent, non-partisan organization that promotes the participation of young people in social, political and economic dialogues at the national and global levels.

His more recent work deals with an alternative to capitalism; ethosism.

The Decline of America: 100 Years of Leadership Failures by David D. Schein Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A long and thorough study into how the last 100 years of American history, and the presidents who presided over them, have not only impacted the United States but how they can be used as a roadmap to what the next 100 years looks like take center stage in author David D. Schein’s “The Decline of America: 100 Years of Leadership Failures”.

The Synopsis

“The Decline of America” offers a carefully documented analysis of the last seventeen U.S. presidents. These men, eight Democrats and nine Republicans, have shaped the last 100 years, not only for America, but for the world. Each president is profiled with unsparing scrutiny so we can see where it’s all gone wrong.

David Schein follows these critiques by proposing ways to improve America’s outlook for the next 100 years—before it’s too late.

The Review

The author did an incredible job of thoroughly researching and developing this book. The sheer volume of statistics and facts that the author was able to comb through and relate to the reader for these several presidents was the perfect balance of history and politics. The heart and passion for which the author writes are evident and yet are presented in a cool and collected manner that speaks to the topic of this book.

The interesting and unique thing about this book is the different impact it will have on different readers. For instance, I myself am more democrat in my political views than republican, but I’ve always prided myself on taking in information from all sides of a conversation and being open to hearing all discussions being made. So it was very insightful and fascinating to see the author’s unique perspective and approach to certain administrations, and while I may not view them in the same light, I think this is relevant to how passionate we as a people can be in terms of politics. Yet the ability to listen and acknowledge our differences without animosity or ignorance is something everyone could stand to learn from, and it made this reading experience quite fulfilling.

The Verdict

Thought-provoking, engaging, and insightful, author David D. Schein’s “The Decline of America: 100 Years of Leadership Failures” is a must-read book on history and politics in the United States. The thoughtful and well-researched book really challenges readers to see from others’ perspectives and take into account that everyone is going to have different interests and goals in the political arena, and our viewpoints on how an administration will perform or does perform are usually dictated by those perspectives. The Oncoming Revolution by Sam Mansourou Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author and teacher Sam Mansourou takes readers on a fast yet thought-provoking journey to explore the nature of reality and examine the paths we as a society must take to eliminate the control the elite have over society in the book “The Oncoming Revolution”.

The Synopsis

Author Mansourou ignores the left-right discourse and targets the ruling class as he calls for united civic action against the current paradigm maintained by the elite’s media, politicians and academia.

Advertisements

The Review

This was a well-written and informed read. The author does a great job of concisely and expertly weaving together the information and statistics needed to explore this concept of the elite controlling the masses and the need to end capitalism and political divides overall. The writing was clear and the author’s voice within his writing was brilliantly crafted, engaging the reader to allow them time to think on these issues for themselves while still driving the points home that he intended.

What stood out to me was the approach and tone the author took with this book. Rather than focus on one political party or another in our society, the author instead focuses on the position and role that the wealthy elites play in our world, primarily companies that control wealth, the media, etc. This was a great direction to take the book in, as it eliminated the anger and rage that so many can get consumed in when talking about the messages of a particular political party.

The Verdict

A thoughtful, educational, and philosophical read, author Sam Mansourou’s “The Oncoming Revolution” is a fantastic read that examines the changes we as a society can make to better our world. From the elimination of capitalism, making certain things like housing and food free, and getting rid of corporations’ hold on our resources, this book covers it all and is not to be missed. Oh Daddy Chronicles by Barry Robbins Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author Barry Robbins takes readers on a creative, humorous and witty look inside the chaotic life of Donald Trump and his family and associates inside the White House in the political satire, “Oh Daddy Chronicles”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

The “Oh Daddy Chronicles” – a contemporary political satire – takes current events and explains what we thought was unexplainable. Why was President Trump so into hydroxychloroquine? How did his cognitive impairment exam actually play out? What was really behind the Bible stunt at St. John’s Church? What happened when he called the corporate offices of Twitter? And, perhaps of greatest significance, what is his favorite cupcake from Georgetown Cupcakes? You want answers? The “Oh Daddy Chronicles” has them.

Helping to carry the burden of irreverence is a motley assortment of lovable supporting characters – Squishie the Fed Ex deliveryman, the fortune cookie master Wang So Fun, the tomato sauce expert Giuseppe Sauceatoni and, of course, Melania’s dear Uncle Slobodan, the pig farmer from Zagorje ob Savi.

The Review

What a creative and fun way of looking into the madness that was the Trump Administration. So many people in the United States and around the world sat in disbelief at many of the things said and done over the last four years, and still continue to be so. The author has perfectly captured this feeling with a series of short skits that tackle the absurdity of several real-life situations through political satire.

The thinly-veiled jabs at several notable figures in and around the White House and President’s family perfectly blend into the situations that have become headline news over the years, including the disastrous response to the COVID-19 epidemic. The author writes with a voice that perfectly balances the humor and wit that many come to expect from a political satire, while the dialogue and imagery used throughout the narrative do a fantastic job of painting a vivid image in the reader’s mind as each scenario plays out. The humor only intensifies when the reality of the situations themselves in real life hit home, making this a one of a kind read that is not to be missed.

The Verdict

In this time of chaos, as the year comes to a close and a new administration is set to take office within the next month or so, this is a perfect read. Humorous, enlightening, and mature, author Barry Robbin’s “Oh Daddy Chronicles” is the political satire many readers need and won’t be able to put down. Injecting much need laughs into the ridiculous nature of American Politics at this point in time, this is a must-read satire in 2020, so be sure to grab your copy today!
