Blood rituals, magick, and monsters take center stage as the rebirth of Cernunnos and the exploration of realms beyond our own lead to a dangerous journey in author Stephanie Ellis’s “Reborn”.

The Synopsis

Return to the Weald, the world Stephanie Ellis introduced us to in The Five Turns of the Wheel.

Reborn is the story of Cernunnos, the Father of all, who has risen. Born of blood offerings, he travels to the Layerings—one of those places, like Umbra, which sit just beyond the human veil.

Reborn is the story of Tommy, Betty and Fiddler, the infamous troupe whose bloody rituals were halted by Megan, Tommy’s Daughter. Rendered weak by Megan’s refusal to allow them to hunt in the human world of the Weald, they seek their rebirth and forgiveness from the Mother and Cernunnos.

Reborn is the story of Megan, who follows Cernunnos and Hweol’s sons on a pilgrimage of hope—one that would see her husband restored to her and the dark presence of Hweol removed.

Ultimately, though, Reborn is the story of Betty, the most monstrous of the three brothers. He is Nature, red in tooth and claw. He is what the Mother made him. And who are we to judge?

With Reborn, Ellis delivers another powerful tale of folk horror that will captivate the reader from the first page until its final bloody climax.

The Review

As a longtime fan of the mythology of different cultures, I loved the author’s extensive use of Welsh mythology and culture in this folk horror read. The haunting imagery and terror the author infuses into the atmosphere and tone of this novel kept me present and engaged with the narrative. The rich settings and intimate details of the mythos allowed me as a reader to become immersed in the story fully and completely, feeling every twist and turn the story brought as the grim reality of these ancient beings came to life.

To me, character development was the true heart of the narrative, both for the heroes and the villains of this tale. The hopeful pursuit that Megan goes on in hopes of restoring her husband clashes brilliantly with the destructive nature of the ancient deities, especially the three brothers, whose bloodlust and animalistic tendencies prove equally dangerous and disturbing. Yet the author’s ability to capture not only that folk element of the horror genre but showcase that these characters all reside in very deep shades of gray and no one character is wholly good or evil showcases the complexity and engaging elements of this novel.

The Verdict

Twisted, captivating, and harrowing, author Stephanie Ellis’s “Reborn” is a must-read folk horror read of the 2022 season. The perfect spooky season read for fans of ancient mythology and chilling horror novels, the gripping character development and thought-provoking themes the author explores make this a one-of-a-kind read that cannot be missed. The Review

A heart-pounding and exhilarating new chapter in a fantastic dystopian YA series. The author does a great job of focusing on themes of freedom and survivor’s guilt early on in the narrative, exploring the new world of the Unclaimed Cities as Lexil, Finn, and Kaylen are caught in the middle of a combative and explosive situation with the Reborn Council of Elders, highlighting the new laws that they must face. The balance of this new world with the world that they escaped, and for which they must now venture back into, makes this novel feel like a natural and exciting sequel to the first novel.

Yet it’s the evolution of Lexil as she showcases a well-rounded and thrilling journey of a young woman surviving after escaping enslavement to becoming a leader and heroine who must risk everything she has fought for in order to save others. This novel cements her heroic journey and highlights the shifting landscape of this dystopian world that blends realism with sci-fi and fantasy elements.

The Verdict

An action-packed, shocking, and heart-pounding dystopian YA thriller, author Jenna Greene’s “Renew” is a must-read novel. The perfect beach read for any dystopian or YA fan, the author draws the reader into the protagonist’s struggle and highlights her bond with bot Finn and Kaylen, as well as others, which gives her the strength to endure this hero’s journey. By the book’s end, readers will be on the edge of their seats as the shocking cliffhanger leaves them eager for the next chapter of this narrative. Interview with Author Jenna Greene

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

I think I was a writer right from the start. My parents have described me as a talker and wild story teller from the very beginning. Once second or third grade hit, I was able to really write and develop the little tales I came up with. I remember penning a story for my fourth grade class on my mom’s old typewriter. I kind of miss the bings and clicks it made. Anyway, I’ve been writing ever since.

What inspired you to write your book?

The inspiration for REBORN came from my annoyance with my freckles, a thought gathered at a writer’s conference, and my mother’s illness. All three elements combined beautifully to create a unique tale.

What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

I hope readers learn to not judge others based on superficial qualities. I hope they learn to listen more and judge less, and to seek similarities rather than differences between themselves and others.

What drew you into this particular genre?

The first book I ever penned was a YA … and I was YA. I was seventeen at the time ideas for my IMAGINE series entered my brain. Add to that the fact that I eventually became a teacher and worked with teenagers… ta da!

If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?

I would want to talk to Ceera, as she is the youngest. Youth have different perspectives on what is occurring, and they are very pure in their thoughts and emotions.

What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

Well, I’m a bit old-school, so Facebook is my main avenue for communication. But I’ve been branching out to Twitter and Instagram. I guess my nieces will eventually convince me to embrace Tik Tok.

What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Just write. Yes, some of it will not be good, but the only way to get better is to practice. And the best thing is to keep going, and not constantly re-read what you just wrote over and over again. You need a bit of distance from your writing. It’s better to let the words have a moment to themselves before you analyze them. And keep in mind, all rough drafts look quite, well, rough.

What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

The sequel to REBORN is edited and right now my publisher is working on formatting and cover design. I’m super excited to see how fans react to this continued journey for Lexil, Finn, and other characters. As well, I have a picture book in development, and I am thrilled to see a story for a younger readership reach the shelves.

The Review

A fantastic blend of fantasy and dystopian thriller, author Jennifer Greene has crafted an engaging world where the fight for freedom takes on a whole new meaning. Exploring a world where those born with marks on their bodies are known as Reborns, those who have lived past lives, and are considered property to serve the Once-Borns, this novel does an expert job of crafting wholly original mythology and a memorable cast of characters.

The author’s ability to blend a unique and creative new narrative with an important theme such as freedom and fighting against oppression makes this such an important read. The action and character growth are beautifully balanced with the world-building the author delves into, exploring how the fight for freedom comes from multiple sides, and there is often much more to the story than meets the eye.

The Verdict

A shocking, entertaining yet thoughtful dystopian fantasy, author Jenna Greene’s “Reborn” is a must-read novel. Highly engaging and memorable, the author does a fantastic job of creating a great cast of characters, especially the protagonist and hero Lexil, as well as a wellspring of unique world mythology that readers will want to revisit over and over again.
