Forbidden War (The Intern Diaries Book Three) by D.C. Gomez Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Death’s Intern must help keep the peace between vampires and elves during a tense negotiation as the threat of war looms over them all in author D.C. Gomez’s “Forbidden War,” the third book in The Intern Diaries series.

The Synopsis

A trip to hell. Angry Vampires. Seductive Elves. Oh my!

Do I honestly look like a mediator?

Let’s be honest. I can barely keep the peace between the boys, and they like each other.

Why would Death agree to send us to supervise a peace negotiation between vampires and elves, just because her egotistical brother, War, doesn’t want to do it?

We don’t even like vampires. If Constantine is correct, we barely tolerate each other due to our own messy peace negotiations. To make my life even more complicated, even my Godmother has a secret.

This is a huge catastrophe waiting to explode. Three days to find a princess or Texarkana becomes the site for WWIII. I really need a raise.

* Forbidden War is book three in the Urban Fantasy series The Intern Diaries. The stakes are higher for Isis Black as she meets another of Death’s siblings. The manipulative War is at it again, and dumping one giant mess on Isis and her friends.

***This is a stand-alone novel, or it can be read in sequence.

The Review

This is another fantastic entry into this phenomenal urban fantasy series. The author does an incredible job of further exploring the paranormal mythos of the characters’ world. The thing that always brings a bright spot to the story itself is the exploration of the Horsemen mythos, the relationship and differences between Death and her siblings, and how it impacts the paranormal world.

The blend of humor in the characters’ dialogue and character development made this story shine. The witty banter between Isis and the other characters felt like the same charming humor found in shows like Supernatural back in the day. Exploring the relationship vampires have with other members of the paranormal community was mesmerizing to see come to life on the page.

The Verdict

Memorable, high-octane, and hilariously adventurous author D.C. Gomez’s “Forbidden War” is a must-read urban fantasy. The exploration of how Death’s Interns work with the interns of other Horsemen and the way this book built upon the stories told in previous books while also working well as a standalone novel made this one book you won’t want to put down. The Review

This was such a compelling and rich fantasy novel. The author breathed fresh life into folklore and intertwined it throughout this narrative, which was incredible. The artful, stylistic writing style allowed the reader to feel transported to this land, bringing a cinematic experience that felt like a blend of Adrienne Young’s book Sky in the Deep and the Netflix series The Last Kingdom.

The world-building and character development in this novel were outstanding. The protagonist’s emotional bond with the people she is sworn to protect and the magical system and world that she immerses herself in make this a gripping story to get lost in. This novel’s balance of action and mythology and the exploration of druids and their culture made the book fascinating and mesmerizing.

The Synopsis

Enigma Forced, Book 2, is yet the most challenging and complex case for the Enigma Heirs.

The present-day battle is in full swing, yet it can end badly for humanity unless the Enigma Heirs triumph. Who will survive the onslaught and how fast can they make Mateo pay?

The Review

What an adrenaline-fueled and engaging thriller. The author does a remarkable job of finding an outstanding balance between the action and thriller elements of the novel, delving into subjects that are all too real and touching upon the fears and horrors that human beings are sadly all too capable of inflicting on one another. The theme of morality and the heartbreaking situations where the innocent people the team is trying to save find themselves made this a grounded yet engaging story.

The author’s ability to layer suspense and drama into the narrative and create an air of intrigue made this story so thrilling. The themes of hope, overcoming the odds, and humanity’s never-ending battle of “good vs. evil” made the narrative entertaining yet memorable, and the adrenaline-fueled adventure kept the reader’s hearts pumping as the stakes continued to rise and rise.

The Verdict

Heart-pounding, suspenseful, and thrilling, authors Charles Breakfield and Rox Burkey’s “Enigma Forced” are compelling and memorable must-read books. ELDP

The Review

Another gripping and fun middle-grade paranormal read, the author continues to strike the right balance between a small-town spooky atmosphere and out-of-this-world adventures. The imagery in the author’s writing style not only does a great job of bringing this small town and its inhabitants to life but also captures the rich development of the paranormal elements found in this story.

The heart of this story resides in the relatable characters and new directions into the paranormal that the author explored. The use of cryptids and aliens in this book, including a Sasquatch named Cheryl, gave much more depth and world-building to the growing narrative of the series. The humor and wit the protagonists and their allies had in their dialogue will enthrall and entertain young readers.

The Verdict

Author Arthur Slade’s “Invasion of the I.Q. Snatchers” is a fast-paced, thrilling, and adventurous middle-grade sci-fi and fantasy book. The story’s vibe reminded me of a season 3 episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer titled “Band Candy.” The twists and turns and the fun nature of the story will keep readers invested in the story’s progress. Toy & Treat of the Month

The Review

This was such a heart-wrenching and chilling read. The author does an incredible job of bringing the reader into the brutal reality that so many women find themselves forced to endure, thanks to predatory men. The suspense and horror of the events that led Amber to finally leave her husband, as well as the terror that comes with fighting for survival, were all equally felt thanks to the author’s fantastic use of imagery and atmosphere in her writing, allowing the reader to feel immersed in this story.

The character dynamics and powerful themes are well done in this story. The realistic nature of both Amber and Cade as characters and the cycle of violence and forgiveness shown throughout their marriage hit close to home for far too many readers. Yet, the realistic nature of the characters’ relationship and the beats of hope throughout the story as she fights to escape this relationship will stay with readers long after the book ends.

About the Author

Barbara Harrison is a woman who loves telling stories. She was an avid reader as a teenager, whose interest in the world of imagination was first stirred by the written word. Barbara started with writing scripts for plays and poetry. This love for words, then extended into a passion for acting and bringing the written word to life. As a hopeless romantic, she mostly enjoyed reading books about true love and finding a soulmate. As she grew into womanhood, the young Barbara began to realise that sadly, the love stories depicted in Mills and Boon novels, were far removed from real life. In 1988 she married her late husband, Russel Harrison, and they raised two children together. After many marital ups and downs and twelve years of marriage, Russel moved to Florida, USA. This was a huge shock to Barbara and their children, who had no desire to relocate overseas. For a period of fourteen years. Barbara lived a life of split family on two continents, travelling between America and South Africa.

Tragically, in August 2012, after a mole biopsy on his arm, Russel received news that it had become a melanoma. He recovered well from the surgery to remove the cancer, however, it had spread, and in April 2014 was considered to be stage four and therefore terminal. Both returned to South Africa in July 2014, where Russ received treatment and they could be with family and friends during that dreadful time. On 1 October 2015, their twenty-seventh wedding anniversary, Russel passed away, leaving Barbara a grieving widow. Barbara began to slowly move forward again, and as she looked back to take stock of her life, she began to realise that she had spent most of her married life, living her husband’s dream. Although she thoroughly enjoyed being a wife and mother, there had been no ambition, other than the love of acting many years ago, to follow a career. At the age of fifty, encouraged by two of her friends, Barbara began to write again. Her first couple of endeavours were in the non-fiction world and she did not attempt to publish. One of her friends suggested that she try her hand at writing novels. Another friend greatly believed in her ability to write and constantly encouraged her to keep going, ultimately birthing the book you now hold in your hands.

Land of the Dragon (Land of the Dragon Series) by Steffanie Costigan Review

A young girl and her siblings trying to escape the horrors of WWII, including their Nazi father, stumble upon a world only glimpsed in the stories of their youth and discover the horrors of war can never be fully escaped in author Steffanie Costigan’s “Land of the Dragon,” the first book in the series of the same name.

With each read, you may uncover more details layered throughout the book that you didn’t originally recognize. This book is brought to you from Reading Dream Press where stories come alive.

The Review

This was a powerful and thoughtful fantasy read. The blend of historical fiction and fantasy was incredible, effortlessly merging the theme of war and its impact on those caught in its gravity into our world and the Land of the Dragon. The world-building, layered mythos surrounding the realm, and the depth of various creatures, from dragons to unicorns and even werewolves, allowed readers to get lost in this world altogether.

The emotional core of this story rests in Eleanor’s story, both her past and the adventure she finds herself on. The heartbreaking reality of the impact of WWII, from her father’s fate after helping Jewish members of his community escape from Nazi control to the never-ending fight to keep her family safe, at least the family she had left when she swore to keep her siblings alive. Her experiences’ impact and heart on the narrative will stay with readers long after the book ends.

The Verdict

Heartfelt, adventurous, and engaging author Steffanie Costigan’s “Land of the Dragon” is a must-read historical fiction and fantasy story and a grand entry into a new series. The twists and turns in the story, the emotional toll the protagonist’s experiences take, and the wealth of mythology poured into this story will keep readers invested in the narrative. The Review

The world-building continues to amaze in this third entry in the Eternal Chronicles. The author infuses a great deal of intrigue and mystery into the story, as the question of loyalties and who the protagonists can trust is tested. The imagery and use of magical and mythical world-building allow the reader to feel transported into the story.

What made this story shine was the robust character development in this story. The protagonist, Elior, is tested in this book, exploring his call to lead their people and how to rise above the hardships and struggles their journey has thrown in their path. The story of redemption some characters take, especially one who has been on the wrong side of the battle thus far, draws the reader into the story and keeps them emotionally invested as the losses pile on in this story.

The Review

What a heartwarming and memorable book. The author did a remarkable job of capturing the whimsy and wonder of Sasquatch in our culture while also delivering an educated and experienced book for young readers everywhere. The warmth and natural wonder of the illustrations allowed the spark of nature to take hold of the reader’s mind, keeping readers invested in the overall story being told.

The heart of this story rested in the significant theme of conservatorship that permeated the narrative. The simple story of a Sasquatch and its relationship to nature may be straightforward. Yet, this book provides a depth of attention to detail on the impact we as a civilization make on the environment and natural surroundings.
