The Synopsis

Wealthy fourth-year medical student Jack is miserable and mean. An elderly patient, seeking her long-lost lover, is about to send him on the journey that will change his life.

Aimless Jack Maizel is a slovenly medical student who is unlikeable, arrogant, and slightly manic. Persuaded by his influential parents to pursue a medical career, he cannot hide his contempt for the profession and even for some of his neediest patients. His classmate, Ahgri, a well-mannered and gentlemanly former Tanzanian mountain guide and coffee plantation worker, is an unlikely best friend.

When Maizel begins a month-long clinical rotation on the first day of September in 1982 with a hospital admission work-up for elderly and soft-spoken Mildred Dixon, he has no intention of doing any more than he has to. As the month goes by, she recounts a tender and passionate romance with a young U.S. Army Air Force lieutenant headed off to bombing runs over Germany. She appeals to Jack for help in her last wish of finding the love of her life again.

As the days run out on September, Mildred and Ahgri’s collective wit and Mildred’s touching plea eventually lead Maizel to a life-altering experience. The astonishing twist that ignites a path for Maizel’s future will leave readers with a poignant lesson on how we learn to live and love. Dwinnells’s memorable characters and his message of hope, kindness, forgiveness, and redemption will appeal to readers across genres.

Ronald Dwinnells is the author of the Axiom Gold Medal-winning leadership book, Don’t Pick Up All the Dog Hairs.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was a heartfelt and thoughtful narrative. The care and attention the author paid to detail in the use of imagery in the story made the journey that these characters endured feel vibrant on the page. The even pacing of the narrative and the settings made the story feel very cinematic, a cross between a classic romance and an indie drama all at once.

Yet the character development and the gripping emotional depth that each had within them made the story shine. The evolution of Jack as a protagonist, from his easygoing life throughout his youth and his callous nature to the emotional connection he forges with Mildred and the raw and powerful feelings that arise when she and her lost love Delbert’s story starts to become more apparent, Jack’s story is so profound and engaging to get lost in. Even his unlikely friendship with Ahgri made Jack more well-rounded.

About the Author

I Was Always Different.

It was quite a challenge to adapt to two vastly diverse cultures. Struggling to balance both inherited traditions—American and Japanese—was like trying to inhale air while submerged in water. Neither culture would accept me as their own. I looked, thought, and acted differently than most kids.

My life started with a Japanese name, but it was changed to an American one by the time I turned six. My mother was a 21-year-old Japanese woman when she gave birth to me in Kamakura, Japan in 1955.

My dad was an American soldier stationed in Japan after World War II. My Koseki (Japanese family registry) identified me as Yoshikawa Kumeo, first born son of Yoshikawa Hisako. There is no mention of my father in this document because they were not married—quite a taboo in post-world war Japan.

Much of my childhood was spent living amongst people who I did not resemble. Although I had a Japanese name, a Japanese mother, and a Japanese citizenry, I was not accepted in their society because I was known as a hafu (derogatory word for half-breed). Mom’s family wanted nothing to do with her or me because I

brought shame to them. I was and still am an outcast of both parents’ families.

Growing up, I was always fighting with Japanese kids while adults looked at me with askance, cursing and wagging threatening fingers at me. The homogenous Japanese society never quite accepted a gaijin (foreigners) and worse.

My dad, tending to military obligations, left us after my birth but re-entered our lives when I was around five years. They planned to marry before he reported to his new assignment in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Mom was concerned that I did not speak English, so she immediately enrolled me in a nearby Catholic Missionary Kindergarten. She was unaware that it was Italian in origin! It didn’t matter to me.

One day, while Dad visited us on leave, mom, beaming with pride told me to say “hi” in English.

Proudly, I smiled and blurted out, “Ciao Padre!”

He frowned and said something in an unfamiliar language (English), then roared with laughter! I turned red with embarrassment—thinking I said something wrong!

Everything happened quickly after that. My parents married and I got a new name, Ronald Dwinnells, and soon became a naturalized U.S. Citizen. I even got an American passport to travel to the States. When we

arrived in Kentucky, I suddenly faced an entirely new set of adversities. I was no longer referred to as a gaijin but was now being demonized as a “lousy dirty Jap”! It didn’t help that I couldn’t speak English or that I looked different. I even had a hard-to-pronounce last name unlike the typical Smith, Thomas, and Jones family names that predominated rural Kentucky at the time.

I had no choice but to deal with these new difficulties caused by my being different and unusual. Through resilience and resolve, I learned to embrace failures, adversities, mistakes and even enemies. Ironically, I don’t think I would have had the successes nor the happiness, peace, and contentment of life if I had not experienced difficulties as a child and young man. I am truly grateful.

My first published book, Don’t Pick Up All the Dog Hairs, is about what not to do in leadership and life based upon difficult experiences. Many leaders experience difficulties, almost daily. My message to readers is to embrace these adversities and turn them into good. Learn to always embrace, accept, learn, teach, and move on after difficulties! It will result in a good life!

Please enjoy the “Dog Hair” book! It’s a fun read!

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was a fantastic and emotional read. The author does an excellent job crafting a complex and in-depth story of love and heartbreak in a time when sexual identity was still tough to contend with due to society’s opinions and judgments. Not only does the story showcase the struggle of living as a gay man openly, but themes of health scares during the AIDS epidemic and the uncertainty that life brings in the face of tragedy as well.

The character development allowed the story to shine brightly. The protagonist was so deep and fueled by emotions we all can identify with. The pain of loss and the fear of loneliness are genuine emotions that we all must contend with in life, and the enthralling story that stems from Nathan’s loss and search for hope kept the reader engaged every step of the narrative.

Purlisse Loves Your Skin!

The Review

This was a compelling and enthralling romance novel. The author does a remarkable job of drawing the reader into the narrative with rich character development and powerful imagery in the author’s writing style. The complex journey that the protagonist Fiona goes through as she navigates the negative impact of her ex-husband on her life, the growing feelings and emotions she develops for Bo, and her journey to fulfill her needs make this a memorable trip.

The heart of the book rests in the dynamic story the author developed. The way the author showed how outside forces saw her relationship with her ex and his seemingly “nice guy” persona and how that broke down in the face of his jealousy was just brilliant storytelling and true to life for many people as well, adding a sense of familiarity to the story that readers will be drawn to. The contrast of her relationship with Bo added a heat and passion to the story that will draw readers further into this narrative.

The Review

This was such an incredibly powerful and gripping narrative. The author did a fantastic job of creating an equilibrium that made the story’s political and supernatural elements. The book immediately sets the stage in the opening chapter, creating a haunting atmosphere rich with imagery and tension that instills a sense of mystery in the reader immediately.

The true power behind this novel, however, rests in the hodgepodge of genres that the author embodies and the compelling character dynamics that are created. The book not only highlights the political scene and the supernatural so well but adds elements of mystery, romance, historical fiction, and even Celtic mythology that speak to this remarkable narrative’s rich cultural aspect.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was a complex yet engaging narrative that didn’t let go. The author did a remarkable job of crafting a story that felt organic and locked into the realities of what goes into a modern relationship. The engaging atmosphere and the rich tension that builds within these character dynamics will instantly hook readers into the narrative.

To me, it was the blend of deep-seated emotional storytelling with captivating character development that made this story shine so brightly. Rather than shy away from the truths that so many people live through in relationships, the author perfectly highlights the struggles and hardships that can occur in a relationship, and how the outside forces in our lives, from work to past relationships and more, can have an impact on the relationship that matters most to us.

The Verdict

Memorable, heartfelt, and engaging, author Anne Leigh Parrish’s “A Summer Morning” is a must-read genre fiction, romance, and drama novel that is not to be missed. Two lost souls find themselves drawn together by fate in author Karen Janowsky’s “Dear Prudence”.

The Synopsis

Two lost souls find a tether in the power of love.

Pru Blum’s life hasn’t been easy, but working as a cellist with the Lower Georgia Symphonic Orchestra is her solace. She depends on her friends and uncle for support, but she’s resolved to become stronger and more independent. However, avoiding her abusive ex, Cliff, isn’t easy… especially since he’s a member of the orchestra too. His overbearing personality and unwanted attention stop her in her tracks each time she tries to move forward.

Shawn Levinson’s life seems disjointed, almost as though it’s someone else’s. His parents adore and expect him to marry his girlfriend, Helena, and for him to work for her father’s corporation. Deep down, he knows their relationship is a sham. Besides, sitting at a desk and wearing a tie forever isn’t his dream. Whenever he tries to follow his own path, though, everyone dismisses his hopes as foolish. He doesn’t have the strength to oppose two families, so he escapes to Georgia to work on his parents’ retirement home and look for some clarity.

When these two lost souls literally collide, sparks fly, but neither wants the complication of a relationship. And Shawn hasn’t mentioned anything to Pru about Helena. No matter how hard they try to distance themselves, they can’t seem to keep away from each other. By the time they’re ready to admit their feelings, their pasts and secrets are poised to blow up in their faces. Falling in love may be exactly what they need… if they can each get out of their own way.

The Review

The story was such a moving and captivating contemporary romance novel. The imagery that the author is able to conjure in the reader’s mind with the powerful setting and atmosphere really elevated the narrative immediately, and the pacing was great in this book, as it allowed the chemistry between Pru and Shawn to grow at a natural pace. The tension that mounts over time as the chemistry brews more and more will enable readers to really feel the emotional and passionate connection these two lost souls develop for one another.

The heart of this story rested in the brilliant character development and the emotional narrative that builds up over time. The complex backstories of each protagonist and the problematic figures of their pasts that continue to haunt them made their story shine, and their connection to music and their Jewish heritage, as well as their shared pain and struggle, made the romance that bloomed more powerful and enthralling from the reader’s perspective.

The Verdict

Memorable, thoughtful, and entertaining, author Karen Janowsky’s “Dear Prudence” is a must-read contemporary romance novel. The slow-burn relationship that builds between these protagonists and the complex life backgrounds for them both, from the abusive ex who won’t leave her alone to the overbearing parents with a future carved out for their son, a fate he wants no part of, made this a compelling read. My Billionaire Casino Boss by Krichele Monroe Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A woman working for her brother’s best friend must navigate the complicated secrets of their shared past and the growing feelings they have for one another in author Krichele Monroe’s “My Billionaire Casino Boss”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

My brother’s best friend, the billionaire casino owner, is my new boss!

I needed a job and well, he was hiring…not great!

We had a one-night stand a few years back, and we’ve kept it hidden from my brother Eric.

Eric is not the understanding type, and he would be extremely pissed to find out after all this time.

He made a pact with Thomas, when we first met, that I was off-limits in every way.

Current “fling” Hillary wants Thomas desperately, so I’m being asked to play “pretend fiance” to help get rid of her.

I really hate games…

Who would’ve guessed all our fake dates and light kisses would turn into so much more?

Now I crave this man and every inch of his chiseled, hard body. And that face…I have no words.

A whole lot of time faking it together turned into deep love (and a surprise baby)…

How will my brother handle the fact we’ve lied to him for so long?

And will he give us his blessing after all?

The Review

This was yet another fantastic contemporary romance from this incredible author. The thing I always love seeing is the chemistry and inciting conflicts that drive the protagonists together. The secret past that Thomas and Lily share and the fear of their secrets getting back to Lily’s brother are a unique twist on the will they-won’t they storyline. The fast pace of the narrative and the unique setting of Tahoe is an added plus to this gripping romance.

To me, the heart of this story rested in the tension both between the protagonists and the people surrounding them, as well as the emotional connection between these characters and the chemistry that brews between them. The shock of their shared past and the heat that builds between them as the plot of the “fake fiancee” takes hold and their close proximity grows into something far more than a simple boss-and-employee relationship was engaging and kept the reader invested in these characters, and the heat readers will feel due to the almost “forbidden” nature of their relationship as they hide it from Lily’s brother was deeply felt.

The Verdict

Thoughtful, emotional, and memorable, author Krichele Monroe’s “My Billionaire Casino Boss” is a must-read contemporary romance. The twists and turns in the story and the intense emotional connection readers will make with these characters made this a truly compelling read, and one I’d come back to time and time again. The Billionaire’s Nanny Next Door by Krichele Monroe Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A former college crush turned billionaire single dad hires a young woman to help take care of his son, and as sparks fly in spite of a complicated past, she must find a way to keep him and his son in her life when trouble comes looking for him in author Krichele Monroe’s “The Billionaire’s Nanny Next Door”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Hottie Billionaire, single Dad alert! And he needs a Nanny. Yes please… My college crush just popped into my new bookstore with his little boy. He’s as gorgeous, if not more so now than when we hooked up way back. I can’t stand this guy though. He had made a bad investment for my brother way back and lost all his savings. The rich jerk could’ve at least paid him back. Now he needs a nanny, and I’m the only one he trusts with Oliver. I’m in over my head, and get warm in all the right places every time he’s in close proximity. Can’t be sure yet if I have the physical and emotional energy to get involved with these two. Just when I lose my heart to both of them, trouble comes looking for Liam, and they’re gone. Was this a temporary goodbye, or will my little Prince and his dad rescue me again?

The Review

This was yet another heated and captivating women’s fiction and romance novel. The tension and history between the protagonists give the reader a depth of understanding surrounding these individuals, and the pain each experienced drives the narrative forward considerably. The small-town coastal setting gives a more direct sense of community to the narrative than the author’s previous novel and balances out the cozy nature of the story with the more heated moments between the characters.

The connection that forms between both Liam and Charlie is incredible, giving readers a grounded and passionate romance that is steeped in a shared history and a shared trauma that has defined the rift that formed between them for so long. The real-world issues both have not only with one another but with themselves will resonate with readers as they are forced to fight their way back to one another internally.

The Verdict

Heartfelt, passionate, and engaging, author Krichele Monroe’s “The Billionaire’s Nanny Next Door” is a must-read romance and women’s fiction novel. The twists and turns in the couple’s story and the gripping narrative that forms around their individual and shared journeys allow the reader to get lost in these characters’ lives easier, providing a lot of entertainment for fans of the genre. My Island Billionaire’s Surprise Baby by Krichele Monroe Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young woman falls head over heels for a wealthy man when she goes to his resort to review his business, and soon finds herself struggling with her growing feelings, his chaotic ex-wife, and the growing secret between them in author Krichele Monroe’s “My Island Billionaire’s Surprise Baby”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

I was robbed on my way to the billionaire’s resort I have to review. He better make this right or he’ll get a nasty report. As it turns out, he’s a silver fox… my skin heats and I blush when he says hello. Apologies and efforts to “wow” me, we spend time together, and now I’m craving him. I’m here to do my job, not fall in love with this guy. But my heart and body have other ideas… The beach, the moon, and the warm Hawaiian breeze are intoxicating, and I’m all his. The feel of his strong, tanned arms around me heat me to my core. He’s twice my age, and he’s not worried about the difference, but I don’t feel the same.. Between his toxic ex-wife and his mom calling me a gold digger, it’s best for all if I leave here.. And now the baby in my belly and I are on our way back home to Paris…

The Review

This was a heated and passionate read. The author immediately taps into the rich chemistry that immediately presents itself between the two characters, allowing their relationship to blossom and grow quickly. Tapping into themes of romances with age gaps, those with wealth versus those without, and the impact that society has on a relationship, the author was able to layer the story with dynamic settings and complex suspense and drama that kept the reader invested in the story.

However, the heart of this narrative rested in the romance and heat that bubbled between the protagonists. The obstacles they faced along the way, from scheming exes and doubtful parental figures to their own painful experiences with love and the way the world would view their relationship, not only felt real and relatable but elevated the tension that the author was able to infuse with the imagery in the author’s writing.

The Verdict

Memorable, exhilarating, and thrilling, author Krichele Monroe’s “My Island Billionaire’s Baby” is a must-read contemporary romance and women’s fiction novel. The adult and heated scenes between the protagonists and the captive drama that unfolds as their relationship develops will keep readers enthralled as they hang onto the author’s every word, eager to see where this couple ends up.
