Galenโ€™s Way: A Starquest 4th Age Adventure by Richard Paolinelli Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Tackling award winning author John C. Wrightโ€™s โ€œStarquestโ€ series, author Richard Paolinelli explores the 4th Age of this saga as a lone mercenary must rescue a Princess whoโ€™s safety will determine the fate of the Andromeda Galaxy as he discovers his true destiny in the epic space-opera โ€œGalenโ€™s Wayโ€.

The Synopsis

A KIDNAPPED PRINCESS.

A FEARED MERCENARY.

AN EVIL EMPIRE ABOUT TO BE BORN.

The Princess Rhiannon of Salacia has been kidnapped and is being held for ransom on the fortress planet Nammu. Galen Dwyn, the most feared mercenary in the Andromeda Galaxy has been hired to rescue her and bring her home.

He will soon find himself on the run with the Princess and right in the middle of a web of political intrigue even as he begins to fall for the Princess. For her love, he will stand alone against the forces looking to establish a new, and very evil, empire.

Galen will look to keep her safe and bring the budding empire to a halt before it can gain a foothold in the galaxy. He will choose to do so the only way he knows how.

Galenโ€™s Way.

Dragon Award finalist Richard Paolinelli takes us on a grand adventure in this space Opera offering set in the 4th age of Dragon Award winner John C. Wrightโ€™s Starquest universe.

The Review

A truly perfect and engaging sci-fi opera! The author has managed to capture the politics, the adventure, and the almost mythical quality of the genre. The sense of imagery the author includes really does an amazing job of painting a picture of the characters and various settings this story utilizes, and while I myself am not familiar with the original series from John C. Wright, newcomers will have no problem delving into this vast world the author has brought to life.

The characters really jump off the page of this story. Galen Dwyn is the perfect blend of characters like Han Solo of the Star Wars franchise or Captain Malcolm Reynolds of the Firefly series, exuding confidence and steely-determination while boasting a blend of humorous interactions and deadly accuracy, and yet he also feels so much more complex and drawn out as a protagonist, which draws the reader in immediately. The backstory of humanityโ€™s migration to the Andromeda and the sense of destiny that the story setโ€™s up just really help the novel as a whole to coalesce, making for a fun read.

The Verdict

A masterful, adventurous, and engaging read, author Richard Paolinelliโ€™s โ€œGalenโ€™s Wayโ€ is a must-read sci-fi epic that really encapsulates the space opera genre perfectly. Readers really get to experience the classic โ€œheroโ€™s journeyโ€ storytelling device and the larger-than-life mythos that this story explores will keep readers wanting more and more. Fix the World by Collected Authors Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A collection of science-fiction writers gather together to bring their creative flair into the fight to preserve or even resurrect the environment and world as a whole in the face of global disasters, war and more in the novel โ€œFix the Worldโ€.ย

The Synopsis

Weโ€™re a world beset by crises. Climate change, income inequality, racism, pandemics, an almost unmanageable tangle of issues. Sometimes itโ€™s hard to look ahead and see a hopeful future.

We asked sci-fi writers to send us stories about ways to fix whatโ€™s wrong with the world. From the sixty-five stories we received, we chose twelve most amazing (and hopefully prescient) tales.

Dive in and find out how we might mitigate climate change, make war obsolete, switch to alternative forms of energy, and restructure the very foundations of our society,

The futureโ€™s not going to fix itself.

The Review

What a powerful and moving anthology of sci-fi, dystopian and apocalyptic stories. This collection stands out with some incredible storytelling and character development, bringing to life some very real and relatable characters in dark and trying situations. The pacing was great, as each story did a great job of setting up its own story and maintaining momentum as the darker aspects of the narrative unraveled and the hope became more and more apparent.

Hope was the aspect of this anthology that really spoke to me. The theme and tone of something like hope is really stark contrast to the typical apocalyptic anthology narrative, and each other did a great job of showcasing how solutions to these problems could bring that hope to life. One story, in particular, was incredibly moving and emotional, and that was J. Scott Coatsworthโ€™s โ€œRiseโ€. The emotional story of a lost city being reclaimed and its citizens returning after decades away was a truly touching moment in this collection, and in a time where we are still in a pandemic, this message was assuredly needed.

The Verdict

A memorable, heartfelt, and creative sci-fi and dystopian apocalyptic anthology, โ€œFix the Worldโ€ is a masterpiece of writing and each other has done a great job of not only bringing their individual stories to life but making each story feel connected and important all at once. A book readers wonโ€™t want to put down, this collection inspires hope and gives readers everywhere the creative inspiration to face these challenges head-on themselves. Excerpt

From “Rise”

by J. Scott Coatsworth

The rumbling increased to a roar, and more dark patches appeared in the green lagoon waters. So expensive. So laborious to stabilize what was left. But every bit worth it, in this moment.

A great spume of water sprayed high enough to throw a shimmer of mist across her face as the first part of the old city broke the surface. As the spume cleared, the top of the Campanile di San Marco rose above the water, green roof gleaming like new. A nice touch. The Restoration Guild must have worked overtime on that one. Its golden weathervane was gone, but the bas relief of the lion of St. Mark made her clutch her heart.

โ€œMamma, whatโ€™s the lion for?โ€ She licked chocolate off her hands, desperate to make her afternoon snack last just a little longer.

โ€œItโ€™s the symbol of the city.โ€ Mamma put her hand on Cinziaโ€™s chest, patting itโ€”boom boom, boom boom. โ€œThe beating heart of who we are.โ€

Cinzia stumbled. It felt like yesterday.

โ€œYou okay?โ€ Gioโ€™s brow creased.

โ€œIโ€ฆ sorry, yes. So many memories.โ€

Skipping over the bridges. The bad days of the quarantine. The corner market where mamma used to do her grocery shoppingโ€ฆ

The Flood.

Another building broke the surface nearbyโ€”the Santa Maria della Salute, the beautiful basilica. Water poured off the gorgeous green domes in a thundering flood. They were mostly intact, though one of the smaller ones had a gaping holeโ€”water poured out of it, cascading down to the lagoon like a waterfall, joining the general uproar of the Rise.

โ€œLook, Kendra. You can see the outlines of the Canal Grande now.โ€ The old waterwayโ€”the pulsing artery of the cityโ€”snaked away from them like a backwards โ€™S.โ€™ In the distance, she could make out the edge of the Sestriere Cannaregio, the district where her mamma had lived in a modest apartment in an old stone palazzo that looked out on a concrete courtyard.

Waters rising, as it rained for close on a month, coming ever closer to their own second-floor balcony.

โ€œWhat if the water doesnโ€™t stop coming?โ€ Cinzia stared out at the concrete courtyard, where the seawater swirled and churned.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry about that, tesoro. The water always stops, eventually. Now come here and help me with dinner.โ€

She had been lucky. She had survived.

All across the lagoon, the buildings of Venice were rising from the water. Many were broken, piles of bricks and debris covered with algae and surprised fish that flopped around on suddenly exposed land. The outlines of the city were becoming clear as water poured out of the buildings, churning the lagoon into a muddy, frothy mess.

A row of palazzos along the edge of the Canal Grande collapsed, sending up a deafening roar as they crumbled into rubble. Cinzia stepped back instinctively, pulling Kendra with her as the platform rose thirty meters into the air to avoid the cloud of debris that briefly rose above the lagoon before settling back to earth.

โ€œNothing to be alarmed about. Not all buildings were stabilized prior to the Rise.โ€ Doctor Horvatโ€™s lined face nodded reassuringly from the hovering screen before them, her voice broadcast across the world and to the Lunar colonies far above. โ€œWe expected some collapses. We will keep you away from the dangerous areas.โ€

โ€œWhat if the city doesnโ€™t stop rising?โ€ Kendra grasped the railing, her gaze locked on the scene below.

Gio knelt next to the girl. โ€œThereโ€™s no chance of that. The polyps have a very short lifetimeโ€ฆโ€

Cinzia was grateful to him. He probably understood the science behind all of this far better than she.

Her mind drifted.

They ate the last of the almond cantucci, savoring the hard cookies even though they were stale. Cinzia was still hungry, but she knew better than to ask for more. There was no more.

Outside, the rain had finally slowed to a constant drizzle.

Mamma ruffled her hair, managing a wan smile. โ€œI need you to stay here, Cinzia. Someone will come for you, I promise. I will find us help.โ€

The helicopters had stopped coming days before, and the boats that had been plentiful the first few days, with men telling them to stay put, had bypassed their part of the city ever since.

The rumbling subsided.

Cinzia opened her eyes and looked around. For just a moment, there was absolute silence on the traghetto, along the shore, and on the sky board.

She looked over the railing.

Veniceโ€”her Veniceโ€”lay before her. It was in sad shape. Many of the landmarks she remembered were tarnished or broken. Whole zones of the city had collapsed, and except for Piazza San Marco, a green film covered the risen city. She was a ghost of her former glory.

But she was there, as solid and real as the hand before Cinziaโ€™s face.

Scott Coatsworth lives with his husband Mark in a yellow bungalow in Sacramento. He was indoctrinated into fantasy and sci fi by his mother at the tender age of nine. Unknown 9: Revelation: Book Two of the Genesis Trilogy by Layton Green Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A astrophysics PhD candidate and an investigative journalist must go on yet another globe-trotting adventure filled with ancient history, secretive societies at war with one another, and mind-blowing physics and technology in author Layton Greenโ€™s โ€œUnknown 9: Revelationโ€, the second book in the Genesis Trilogy.

The Synopsis

The mystery, intrigue, and globetrotting suspense continue in this second installment of the Unknown 9: Genesis trilogy.

After escaping from a watery dungeon in Venice, astrophysics PhD candidate Andromeda โ€œAndieโ€ Robertson and investigative reporter Cal Miller are whisked to Bologna by a member of the mysterious Leap Year Society. A deadly confrontation with the Societyโ€™s bitter rivals, the Ascendants, sends Andie and Cal on the run once again, desperate to solve the Star Phone puzzle so they can reclaim their lives and rescue their loved ones.

Brilliantly juxtaposing a modern-day thriller with a historical search for a missing physicist, REVELATION probes ever deeper into the mounting mysteries surrounding Andie and her past.

What is the source of her strange hallucinations?

What are the true origins of the Leap Year Society and the Ascendants?

How are her mother and her mentor, Dr. James Corwin, involved?

From Italy to India and New York to Buenos Aires, Andie and Cal risk their lives to probe a secret world hidden in plain sight, drawing closer to answers that will determine not only their own fates, but who controls a new frontier of knowledge.

From the author of the bestselling Dominic Grey novels, Genesis is a mind-bending thriller about how far two people will go for answers, and to save the ones they love.

The Review

Much like in his first book in this series, (and in every book Iโ€™ve read from this amazing author), this second entry into the multi-media series does an amazing job of crafting the perfect pace for this narrative. The air of mystery and suspense that comes from this cat and mouse game both in the past and the present is fantastic to read, while the author’s writing style definitely invokes a cinematic quality to it.

The layered approach to the narrative the author takes creates a truly tense and mysterious atmosphere within the novel, and the character growth develops a rich plot that spans the entire globe and beyond. The style of this narrative and its overall contribution to the multi-media series makes this novel even more engaging, as it creates a mythology that not only readers can get lost in, but evokes nostalgia for fans of properties like Assassinโ€™s Creed, The X-Files, and The Da Vinci Code.

The Verdict

An engaging, entertaining, and highly action-packed thriller and sci-fi novel, author Layton Greenโ€™s โ€œUnknown 9: Revelationโ€ is a must-read novel of 2021. The story is intense and has a steady progression for both the narrative and characters that readers wonโ€™t be able to get enough of. By the bookโ€™s end, the shocking revelation of the mysterious โ€œArchonโ€ will have readers floored and eager to learn more about the next chapter in this series. This Golden Flame by Emily Victoria Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young woman desperate to find her lost brother awakens a long thought lost automaton, and with him the secrets of a powerful country in author Emily Victoriaโ€™s YA Fantasy, โ€œThis Golden Flameโ€.

The Synopsis

An Ember in the Ashes meets Mask of Shadows in Emily Victoria’s #ownvoices debut YA fantasy, This Golden Flame, in which asexual Karis, a servant to the mysterious Scriptorium, accidentally awakens long-dormant automaton Alix, initiating an epic adventure full of magic, rebellion, and finding where you truly belong.

Orphaned and forced to serve her countryโ€™s ruling group of scribes, Karis wants nothing more than to find her brother, long ago shipped away. But family bonds donโ€™t matter to the Scriptorium, whose sole focus is unlocking the magic of an ancient automaton army.

In her search for her brother, Karis does the seemingly impossible?she awakens a hidden automaton. Intelligent, with a conscience of his own, Alix has no idea why he was made. Or why his father?their nationโ€™s greatest traitor?once tried to destroy the automatons.

Suddenly, the Scriptorium isnโ€™t just trying to control Karis; itโ€™s hunting her. Together with Alix, Karis must find her brotherโ€ฆand the secret thatโ€™s held her country in its power for centuries.

The Review

What a brilliant fusion of sci-fi and fantasy within the YA genre. The world-building that the author has done here allows readers to witness a world where they can seamlessly see where magical runes and magic itself end and technology and advanced science begin. The fictional setting that the characters find themselves in harkens back to a similar time as Ancient Greece, adapting many of that eraโ€™s way of life and the pursuit of knowledge while at the same time observing ancient customs and beliefs.

The thing that stood out the most for me as a reader was the amazing character development the author brought forth to this read. The protagonists in this story, Alix and Karis, are both fantastic as readers get to see from both perspectives. However, Karis was an especially inspired choice for the protagonist, as her status as one of the heroes of this tale not only gives representation to the asexual community within the larger LGBTQ+ community but inspires young asexual people to embrace their identity no matter what. This is an extremely important territory the author has entered, and it adds to more representation within the YA genre.

The Verdict

A stunning, engaging, and breathtaking world of magic and wonder, author Emily Victoriaโ€™s โ€œThis Golden Flameโ€ is a must-read YA sci-fi and fantasy read. The author brilliantly brings an important LGBTQ+ character to the narrative and creates a fascinating world of science and magic that astounds the reader and creates a world that is brimming with possibilities but haunted by corruption. Snarc 2 by Bruce Olav Solheim Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

An alien adventurer from another world must come to Earth and warn them of an impending invasion from his home world in author Bruce Olav Solheimโ€™s graphic novel, โ€œSnarc 2โ€.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Welcome to Snarc 2, the continuing adventures of Snarc, our favorite intergalactic traveler, and his Cosmic Staff. Snarc must find a way to save humanity from the reptilian inhabitants of his home planet, Maron.

The Review

This was a truly entertaining read. This graphic novel captures the artistry and depth of classic comic books, with detailed character growth and brightly colored pages that really capture iconic 40โ€™s and 50โ€™s era comic book artwork.

While a newcomer to the series, the author does a great job of bringing this story to life for newcomers and fans of the series alike. The author manages to tackle serious struggles such as war and climate change while also integrating the threat of his homeworld into the narrative. While protagonist Snarc and his trust sidekick, the talking Cosmic Staff, are the true heart of this story as their adventures take flight, but the introduction of Dr. Jekyll is an inspired choice into the narrative, as her role as Alien Hunter has taken her to face a growing alien threat and the alien who has come to help her.

The Verdict

A fun, adventurous and entertaining graphic novel, author Bruce Olav Solheimโ€™s โ€œSnarc 2โ€ is a must-read. The story is well developed and the artwork is both original and classic all at once. The narrative immediately draws fans in and captures the essence of iconic sci-fi stories that have come before it, from Star Trek to DC Comicsโ€™s โ€œAdam Strangeโ€. The Hands Weโ€™re Given (Aces High, Jokers Wild #1) by O.E. Tearmann Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A lone commander leading a rebellion is the last hope for a ragtag group of fighters as they fight a war against the seven corporations that make up the former United States in author O.E. Tearmannโ€™s โ€œThe Handโ€™s Weโ€™re Givenโ€, the first book in the Aces High, Jokers Wild series.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Aidan Headly never wanted to be the man giving orders. That’s fine with the Democratic State Force base he’s been assigned to command: they don’t like to take orders. Nicknamed the Wildcards, they used to be the most effective base against the seven Corporations owning the former United States in a war that has lasted over half a century. Now the Wildcards are known for creative insubordination, chaos, and commanders begging to be reassigned. Aidan is their last chance. If he can pull off his assignment as Commander and yank his ragtag crew of dreamers and fighters together, maybe they can get back to doing what they came to do: fighting for a country worth living in.

Life’s a bitch. She deals off the bottom of the deck. But you play the hands you’re given.

The Review

This is a fantastic dystopian sci-fi world the author has created. The immediate thing that will jump out at readers is the fact that the author has naturally incorporated LGBTQ characters and romances into the narrative, navigating the difficulty of not only being a transgender man in a military unit but also exploring relationships within that military command.

These deeply personal and emotional bonds between the characters are expertly balanced with some true action and dystopian story elements. The notion of corporations taking control of the United States is not as far from reality as most of us would like it to be, and this touches upon a lot of those fears.

The action and undercover operations the Wildcards pull off is entertaining, and the way the author explores how sometimes a group who breaks the rules and mold of the classic military setup can accomplish what others could not really resonate with so many people that readers wonโ€™t be able to help themselves from identifying with these characters.

The Verdict

Interview with Author V.S. Holmes

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

Iโ€™ve always been a storyteller and a story-finder. Growing up in the woods without other kids drove me to constantly search for otherโ€™s stories, otherโ€™s lives, specifically through fiction and imagination. This progressed naturally into writing and my day job as an archaeologist. It was in university that, after years of research, I first decided to take the plunge and write professionally.

2) What inspired you to write your book?

Travelers, the first in my Stars Edge: Nel Bently Books, began as a dual POV between an archaeologist and one of the people whose life she was studying from 13,000 years before. I realized pretty quickly that the latter was not my story to tell, so I flipped it forward and explored what would happen if some of those people were abducted and returned thousands of years later. I also wanted to debunk the racist ideas behind โ€œancient aliensโ€ theories while still combining science fiction and archaeology. On a larger scale, all of Nelโ€™s stories explore the ideas about how where we come from impacts where weโ€™re going, and decolonizing archaeology and science.

3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

Heretics is the fourth in Nelโ€™s series of adventures, and with this one Nel returns to Earth in an attempt to save her planet from killer sound waves. Sheโ€™s suddenly straddling the line between coming home and being a fish out of water. Itโ€™s the place that made her, but now she no longer fits in the space she left. A lot of my work focuses on how we differ from othersโ€™ expectations–and often our own. This is a theme thatโ€™s very dear to me as a queer person. On a more intimate level, I hope readers can learn with Nel as she finds the root of her anger, and navigates her complicated relationship with Lin.

4) What drew you into this particular genre?

Sci-fi and fantasy were the first places I saw characters like me, so I naturally gravitated toward that when I started writing my own work. Speculative fiction for me has always been a place of solace and hope. When weโ€™re creating worlds from the ground up, weโ€™re able to envision a world we want, or a world weโ€™re afraid of ours becoming. Because of this, I can create worlds where I see more people like myself, and fight the battles I canโ€™t fight in our own world.

5) If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?

Oh this is tough! Iโ€™d imagine most of them would have some pretty damning comments to make about what I put them through. Ultimately, though, Iโ€™d love to have a nice long chat with Phil–Philos, one of the sentient computers rooted in a manโ€™s head held in stasis. I think it would be fascinating to discuss the science and ethics behind becoming a computer. As a trans and disabled person, conversations around body modification, cyborgization, and transhumanism are really fascinating.

6) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

Twitter has, hands-down, been the best site for me. Though it does suffer from some of the same algorithmic issues as other social sites, itโ€™s still easier to curate than many others. Through Twitter Iโ€™ve found not just an incredible community of fellow SFF authors, but one of the most welcoming places for queer and disabled people, especially since I donโ€™t have access to those communities, or the freedom of being fully out, where we live.

7) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Thereโ€™s a lot of writing advice out there, but the process is going to be different for every author, and honestly every project. I think itโ€™s important to try a lot of different things and find what works best for you and what youโ€™re currently working on. One of the pieces I wish Iโ€™d realized earlier is finding out who you are as a writer, as a creator, and then doing it on purpose. And not being afraid of that changing.

8) What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

So many projects! Iโ€™m currently drafting Fugitives, the fifth of Nelโ€™s books (there will be a total of six) and outlining/drafting my next fantasy series. It takes place within my Blood of Titans world, but follows some new and side characters.

Iโ€™m also working on a complicated, queer, gothic fantasy that might just be the darkest, sexiest, most raw thing Iโ€™ve written to date. Regardless, itโ€™s a bit different from most of my other work and Iโ€™m enjoying stretching my creative muscles!

Drifters (Nel Bently #2) by V.S. Holmes Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Archeologist and adventurer Nel Bently faces a fight for survival after she is tied to a murder in author V.S. Holmes highly beloved sequel, โ€œDriftersโ€, the second in the Nel Bently series.

The Synopsis

The only person on Earth she trusts … is in space

Archaeologist Nel Bently left Chile in the wake of murder, vandalism and UFO sightings. No sooner has the school semester started when cops are at her door. Accused of a murder sheโ€™s not certain is her fault, Nel has no choice but to go on the run. She starts a game of connect-the-dots across New England, following her gut and clues left by her elusive alien-benefactor-turned-almost-girlfriend.

Running from the law isnโ€™t easy with her field pack and a handful of scorned exes to depend on. Between starvation, untraceable texts, and a harrowing journey through the wilderness, Nel is forced to question everything about the science she loves and the people she trusted.

Second book in the thrilling archaeological science fiction series: The Nel Bently Books.

The Review

A fantastic elevation of the first book, this sequel really delves into Nel as a hero as she must fight for her very survival. Still reeling from the loss of a beloved friend and uncertain whom she can truly trust, Nel is thrust into a situation that forces her to quickly learn to trust and lean on others.

Leaving behind some of the more detailed looks into archeology in this novel and instead of adopting a more X-Files style of storytelling, the author does a great job of building suspense and character growth into this narrative. The action of course jumps off right from the beginning chapters, and readers are given a more personal glimpse into Nelโ€™s mindset and character growth in this sequel. The dialogue between Nel and a figure from her past as she fights for survival becomes some of the more intimate but engaging moments in the narrative, framing the events of the previous novel and the narrative moving forward in a much deeper and more connected light than ever before.

The Verdict

A memorable, thrilling, and heart-pounding read, author V.S. Holmesโ€™s โ€œDriftersโ€ is a must-read sci-fi adventure. The exploration of Nelโ€™s character and how she deals with the pressures set before her make for an interesting character study, while the twists and turns lead readers to an exciting finale that sets up the next adventure in the series. If you havenโ€™t yet, be sure to grab your copy of this explosive sequel today!

Star Wars: The High Republic: Into the Dark by Claudia Gray Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A galactic-wide disaster within the hyperspace lanes lead a group of Jedi travelers to lead their companions to an abandoned space station, but soon find themselves at the center of a dangerous mystery in author Claudia Grayโ€™s novel, โ€œStar Wars: The High Republic: Into the Darkโ€.

The Synopsis

Padawan Reath Silas is being sent from the cosmopolitan galactic capital of Coruscant to the undeveloped frontierโ€”and he couldnโ€™t be less happy about it. Heโ€™d rather stay at the Jedi Temple, studying the archives. But when the ship heโ€™s traveling on is knocked out of hyperspace in a galactic-wide disaster, Reath finds himself at the center of the action. The Jedi and their traveling companions find refuge on what appears to be an abandoned space station. But then strange things start happening, leading the Jedi to investigate the truth behind the mysterious station, a truth that could end in tragedyโ€ฆ.

The Review

What a fantastic new canon to explore within the greater Star Wars universe. As a longtime fan of the franchise, I have devoured anything related to the series, and getting to explore an entirely new era set before the events of the main films was a real treat.

The authorโ€™s true power shines best through the amazing character development that occurs here. From new heroes like Reath to dangerous threats like the plant-creatures known as the Drengir and the powerful criminal organization looking to halt the Republicโ€™s expansion into the Outer Rim, the Nihil, the story takes readers into some amazing corners of the galaxy while also establishing connected and engaging new characters.

The twists and turns this story takes are fantastic to see unfold. The already established Nihil is unique to me, as their character development is reminiscent of both real-life pirates and Vikings, who utilize violence and ruthless battle while also clinging to ideals of freedom through taking whatever they like. Yet their backstory is complex and shows promise as the High Republic continues to grow. The introduction of new aspects of the Force and Jedi Order, from the Wayseeker who operates outside of the Jedi Councilโ€™s purview to the Drengir and the connection to the Force itself, will surprise fans and make for a new and powerful foe.

The Verdict

A masterful, entertaining, and action-packed blockbuster of a read, author Claudia Grayโ€™s โ€œStar Wars: The High Republic: Into the Darkโ€ is a must-read for all Star Wars fans. This new initiative into the High Republic excels in this novel, and the authorโ€™s brilliant dive into the Star Wars mythos highlights the endless possibilities this galactic series has for storytellers around the world. I cannot wait to read more about this era of the Star Wars universe, and hope everyone will grab their copy of this fantastic read today!

About the Author

Claudia Gray is not my real name. I didn’t choose a pseudonym because my real name is unpleasant (it isn’t), because I’d always dreamed of calling myself this (I haven’t) or even because I’m hiding from the remnants of that international diamond-smuggling cartel I smashed in 2003 (Interpol has taken care of them). In short, I took a pseudonym for no real reason whatsoever. Sometimes this is actually the best reason to do things.

I live in New Orleans. So far, in life, I’ve been a disc jockey, a lawyer, a journalist and an extremely bad waitress, just to name a few. I especially like to spend time traveling, hiking, reading and listening to music. More than anything else, I enjoy writing.
