In author Barry Harden’s novel Amanita Virosa: The Destroying Angel, a band of citizens rises up to fight against the corruption of 1980s London.

The Synopsis

It’s the 1980s, and London is crumbling under the weight of political corruption while the have-nots are further victimized by unfettered rogue gangs. Children are lured into the dark, lurid chambers of Whitehall, some never to be seen again. Citizens are coerced through intimidation and threats of harm against their families. Utter chaos reigns. Amanita Virosa, a courageous Roma fighter who fled the horrors of war-torn Bosnia, sought refuge in the heart of North London, only to discover that the specter of corruption and injustice haunts her adopted home. Forming an alliance with Everard, a young, homeless firebrand, and Doris, a feisty pensioner, the group embarks on a daring mission to sever the insidious grip of Whitehall’s corruption and the extortion and violence perpetrated on the innocent. Sedition, conspiracy, murder and betrayal all have a voice; some are quickly silenced, while others persistently challenge the very existence of those bold enough to defy the status quo. Loosely based on actual sociopolitical events in eighties London, Amanita Virosa is a riveting warning about the perils of government overreach and the indomitable power of the individual to resist oppression. Will their collective courage be enough to shatter the chains of oppression, or will they become casualties in a war that demands the ultimate sacrifice?

The Review

This was a compelling and intriguing read. The author established a visceral, gritty atmosphere and tone that set the stage for a unique setting that has not been widely discussed in modern history. The action and graphic violence the book depicts highlight the narrative naturally, allowing these relatable and impactful characters to grow and evolve at an even pace as the story and the stakes escalate.

This fast-paced read prominently displayed the themes of greed, power, control, and fighting against corruption. The way the author stepped into this grim reality immediately allowed the reader to feel the desperation and how these characters became fed up and disillusioned with how those living on society’s fringes were treated. The personal connections these characters form with one another and the emotional bond they form with one another, especially Amanita and Richie later on in the book, keep the reader engaged and invested in this growing and dangerous world the author has brought to life on the page.

The Verdict

Author Barry Harden’s “Amanita Virosa: The Destroying Angel” is a must-read thriller that is memorable, engaging, and chilling. The real-life connection to historical events in London during the 80s and 90s and the adrenaline-fueled action gave readers a unique perspective and thrilling narrative that is nearly impossible to put down. The Review

This was a powerful and mesmerizing suburban thriller. The author’s tension and atmosphere made the reader feel transported, a fly on the wall as the characters drew further into the complex world of seduction and power that this neighborhood had crafted for itself. The mystery behind the former occupants of the protagonists’s home and the use of multiple points of view throughout the book allowed the reader to peel back each layer of intrigue at a good pace.

Character development added to the mystery surrounding this novel and helped elevate the exploration of what happens behind closed doors. The picturesque, quiet suburb that the novel initially portrays, as well as the protagonists who come across as the average American family with a clear picture of their future, all come through early in the novel, and yet the seduction parties and ways in which the characters grow and falter showcase the hidden nature of what is the classic “perfect American dream.”

The Verdict

Thrilling, shocking, and engaging author Liz Crowe’s “Cul-de-Sac” is a must-read thriller. The exploration of the American suburb and how lies and power dynamics can work in any setting, even a quiet American cul-de-sac, allowed the shocking twists and turns to hit the reader with a punch that will stay with them long after the book ends. The Review

The author did a marvelous job of honing in on the real-life fear and terror many American families found themselves in during the late 80s. The setting, set during the Satanic Panic era, made this a compelling story. The mass hysteria and the criminals who preyed on the terror gripping the nation made this story feel very atmospheric.

As with the previous entries in this series, the heart of the narrative rested in the character development. The very personal and challenging nature of the crime the protagonist is investigating, as well as the shocking twists and turns the narrative takes, will leave fans eager for more adventures from this new private investigator lead. The gritty imagery the author’s writing utilized brought these crimes and the perpetrators to life in a visceral way, allowing the reader to feel the natural horror building up in this crime thriller.

The Review

This was a compelling and gripping thriller. The author did an incredible job of layering the mystery and atmosphere into this book’s writing, elevating the characters and keeping the reader invested in the overall narrative. The writing style, allowing multiple POVs for the characters in this book, felt very reminiscent of a Dean Koontz novel, giving each character’s voice a part of the overall story.

The heart of this narrative rested in the author’s ability to use imagery and tension to build up the growing suspense that this narrative held. The attention to detail the narrative gave to today’s political and social conflicts really helped bring the reader into the narrative more fully, and the growing horrors that these characters faced felt more shocking as they reflected our own world much more thoroughly.

The Review

This was a fantastic entry into the Dark Dreams series. The author does a phenomenal job of crafting a new narrative that keeps the character development and action of the first two books in the series while also laying the groundwork for more mythos and world-building to take center stage. The tension that builds over time and the way the author was able to bring new readers into the series effortlessly really set the tone for the entirety of the narrative.

The action and suspense of the story, the great strides the author made in enhancing the character’s story arcs in this new entry, and the creative and tense occult/supernatural abilities that take hold of the protagonist’s life made this story truly shine. The imagery of the author’s writing style allowed the gritty road aspect of the protagonist and her partner to meld with the city-based investigative work that the police detective brings to the table in this read.

The Verdict

Memorable, action-packed, and entertaining, author JP McLean’s “Scorch Mark” is a fantastic read and the perfect entry in the Dark Dreams series. The twists and turns, the wealth of world-building, and the haunting atmosphere will keep readers invested in this gripping tale. If you haven’t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!

The Review

This was a fast-paced yet gripping read. The author does a remarkable job of capturing the suddenness and gripping nature of the mystery of this story while also delving into the heart of horse racing and life as a racehorse owner. The balance of these two worlds really speaks to a specific audience, while also leaving room for the general audience to get lost in this world and become enraptured with the narrative.

The heart of this story was the author’s incredible character development. The evolution of Janet as a character, who came from a life of domineering men in her life to gaining strength and resilience as a character showcases the powerful female protagonist she has become over time. The classic storytelling device of the protagonist becoming the main suspect in the case and the fight she takes on to not only prove her innocence but also stop two killers loose on the grounds of this hotel made this a compelling read.

The Verdict

Memorable, fast-paced, and engaging, author Sasscer Hill’s “Murder at the Willcotts Hotel” is a must-read novella and cozy mystery, as well as a great entry in the Janet Simpson Cozy Mysteries series. The twists and turns the narrative takes on and the gripping character twists that keep the action and suspense propelling forward made this a memorable read. A Divisive Storm: A Dora Ellison Mystery Book 6 by David E. Feldman Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A man shot in his car leads an investigator into a web of conspiracy involving a group of white supremacists and a shocking series of murders in author David E. Feldman’s “A Divisive Storm”, the sixth book in the Dora Ellison Mystery series.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

This dark mystery thriller features a stunning twist that turns the tables on the story’s white supremacy angle.

Ray Drucker is shot in the face while sitting in his car in a drugstore parking lot, and his wife has hired Dora to find his killer. Dora quickly learns that his murder is connected to another, five years earlier. As the bodies pile up, Dora and Missy find that the killings are connected to a dark and violent web of white supremacists.

The victims were all members of a club with a barely hidden racist agenda.

The Review

This was yet another truly compelling and captivating mystery thriller! The author has crafted a crime thriller that continuously keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, with twist after twist forcing the reader to question who the killer may be and whether or not the victims were truly victims at all. The tension was palpable as it built over the course of this mystery, from the personal tension in the protagonist’s lives to the tension that arose with each and every new piece of evidence that was found.

To me, the author has done an exceptional job of crafting characters that feel fully realized, and of creating a balance of chilling and heartfelt atmospheres using multiple POVs. The emotional and haunting perspective that readers get from the killer’s mindset and the complicated feelings that Dora gets as she investigates more and more of this case made this story so inviting, and the way the author was able to incorporate more personal story points like Missy’s family and the problems they face was great to see included in this story as well.

The Verdict

Thrilling, haunting, and entertaining, author David E. Feldman’s “A Divisive Storm” is a must-read mystery thriller. The powerful themes of LGBTQ-driven storylines and character growth, as well as the emotionally complex nature of this killer and the truth of these victims’ lives, made this a driven suspense thriller that readers will be talking about long after the book is finished. Exposed: A Circle of the Red Lily Novel Book 1 by Anna J. Stewart Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A Hollywood photographer with trust issues in authority and a detective who happens to be the police commissioner’s son stumbles upon a mystery involving photos of a dead woman, a notorious murder conviction, and a secret society that will do anything to maintain its deadly control over the Hollywood Elite in author Anna J. Stewart’s “Exposed: A Circle of the Red Lily Novel”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Working as a Hollywood photographer means Riley Temple has seen it all. But then she finds herself staring at the chilling image of a dead woman. When her questions about the film lead to violence, she reluctantly turns to the only person who can help. Detective Quinn Burton, the police commissioner’s son. Her history with the LAPD is complicated, her trust in authority, tenuous. But to find those responsible and protect those closest to her, she’s willing to do anything. Even trust a cop.

After more than a decade on the job, Quinn knows a dangerous situation when he sees it and Riley Temple is up to her ears in trouble. But not for the reason she thinks. The pictures she’s stumbled on call into a question a notorious murder conviction—one that powerful people have a vested interest in keeping in place. Seeing this case through means betraying someone: his job, his family, or the woman he’s falling in love with.

As old secrets are revealed, Quinn and Riley find themselves targeted by members of a secret society that has long maintained violent control over Hollywood’s powerful elite. A society that, until now, has remained hidden in the shadows. A society that will stop at nothing to keep their secrets buried.

The Review

I was instantly enthralled by this novel. The author does an incredible job of balancing out the romance with the suspense thriller aspect of the narrative. The way the author delves into the fabric of old Hollywood meeting a modern-day setting was so fascinating, as it allowed the characters to get lost in the glitz and glamor that was old Hollywood while confronting the seedy underbelly of the powerful elite that has always ruled the town.

The chilling and haunting nature of the narrative and the people behind the horrific murders that the story all elevated the rich character dynamics at play between the protagonists and the atmosphere that was built up. The way the author explores a modern-day Hollywood photographer in a way that adds heart and depth to their backstory and their personality as a whole was refreshing, as most stories portray these characters as sleazy or opportunistic. The emotional connection that forms between Quinn and Riley is great to see, and the connection to the greater world around them allows the tension to build not only between them but the greater setting as well.

About the Author

Award-winning, USA Today and national bestselling author Anna J Stewart writes sweet to sexy romances for Harlequin and ARC Manor’s CAEZIK (Kay-Zehk) Romance. Her sweet Harlequin Heartwarming books include the Butterfly Harbor series as well as the ongoing Blackwell continuity series. She also writes the Honor Bound series for Harlequin Romantic Suspense and has contributed to the bestselling Coltons. A Holt Medallion winner (BRIDE ON THE RUN), as well as a Golden Heart, Daphne DuMaurier, and National Reader’s Choice finalist, Anna loves writing big community stories where family found is always the theme. Since her first published novella with Harlequin in 2014, Anna has released more than fifty novels and novellas and hopes to branch out even more (horror romance, anyone?). Anna lives in Northern California where (at the best times) she loves going to the movies, attending fan conventions, and heading to Disneyland, her favorite place on earth. When she’s not writing, she is usually binge-watching her newest TV addiction, re-watching her all-time favorite show, Supernatural, and wrangling two monstrous cats named Rosie and Sherlock.
