What begins as a simple Ponzi scheme investigation becomes a race against time for one private investigator as he comes across a conspiracy of drugs and murder in author Dan Flanigan’s “Mink Eyes”, A Peter O’Keefe novel.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

October 1986—the tarnished heart of the “Greed is Good” decade.

Private detective Peter O’Keefe, a physically scarred and emotionally battered Vietnam vet, is hired by childhood friend and attorney Mike Harrigan to investigate what appears to be a petty mink farm Ponzi scheme in the Ozarks. But quickly O’Keefe finds himself snared in a vicious web of money laundering, cocaine smuggling, and murder—all at the behest of a mysterious mobster only referred to as Mr. Canada. Also caught up in Mr. Canada’s illicit network is the exquisite Tag Parker, who seems to dance between roles as the woman of O’Keefe’s dreams—and his nightmares.

From start to finish Mink Eyes delivers classic noir crime fiction at its finest. In a category filled with formulaic and predictable characters and plot lines, reviewers are calling Mink Eyes absolutely “unique and unexpected.”

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was a gripping and captivating noir thriller. The hard-broiled, gumshoe-style noir meets detective thriller found the perfect balance between the more modern (relative to most noir storylines) setting and the style and genre noir is known for. The gritty tone and the atmospheric way the novel’s mystery is brought forward kept the reader engaged with the characters themselves.

The character development in this book really brought this novel home. The classic themes the author plays on, including the detective being a war veteran, add depth and emotion to the protagonist’s arc, as he struggles with the haunting imagery that his time in Vietnam had on him whilst wrestling with the complex yet truly villainous Mr. Canada.

Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This was a compelling and gripping thriller. The author did an incredible job of layering the mystery and atmosphere into this book’s writing, elevating the characters and keeping the reader invested in the overall narrative. The writing style, allowing multiple POVs for the characters in this book, felt very reminiscent of a Dean Koontz novel, giving each character’s voice a part of the overall story.

The heart of this narrative rested in the author’s ability to use imagery and tension to build up the growing suspense that this narrative held. The attention to detail the narrative gave to today’s political and social conflicts really helped bring the reader into the narrative more fully, and the growing horrors that these characters faced felt more shocking as they reflected our own world much more thoroughly.

The Verdict

Harrowing, compelling, and entertaining author Caroline Taylor’s “The Pit Road War” is a must-read mystery thriller that you won’t be able to put down. Take a Food Journey Around the World!

The Review

This is another fantastic high fashion meets murder mystery read. The author beautifully captures the essence of the small-town mystery within the grander scale of the setting. The imagery and atmosphere allow readers to feel transported in this story, and the tension can be felt both in Sage’s daily life and the murder mystery.

Yet it was the character dynamics and the mystery itself that brought this narrative to life. The conflict and drama between Sage and Laken are palpable, while the larger-than-life personality of the soon-to-be murder victim and the impact he made allowed for a wide cast of characters to become potential suspects, adding to the mystery itself.

It’s a decision that will lead him into the darkest corners of Dunwynn, revealing a secret sect of alchemy and a plot to achieve unspeakable power.

Can Bow play the hero one more time, or will the truth about The Maiden’s Sleep be his end?

The Review

This was a compelling and gripping fantasy thriller. The story gives readers a captivating experience as the world building allows the imagery in the author’s writing to expand and grow exponentially in the reader’s mind. The tension the builds in the book, especially as the mystery behind this illness that took the protagonist’s daughter begins to unfold, made the narrative more complex yet enthralling to read.

Yet it was the heartfelt, complicated and emotional character development that made this story so unique. The revelation behind his daughter’s death, the emotional struggle of his journey to help these children, and the dark blend of alchemy and nefarious villains give the protagonist a harrowing yet well rounded character driven narrative for readers to get lost in.

The Verdict

Thoughtful, entertaining, and compelling, author Michael J Stiehl’s “The Maiden’s Sleep” is a must read fantasy thriller you don’t want to miss. The twists and turns in the narrative and the rich character arcs will leave readers eager for more, and a Knife and Bow prequel is a definite must. The Review

What a fun and rich story. The author does an incredible job of crafting a narrative that is both fun and thrilling all at once. The memorable story development that highlights the small-town life and action keeps the reader engaged very early in the book. The author’s use of imagery vividly brings the story’s details to life with extraordinary depth.

The heart of this story rests in the protagonist’s rich character dynamics and relatability. The story of a woman struggling in the world, only to find her true identity and the power she had been hoping to regain in her life, was not only relatable but, in its own fun and unique way, inspiring. The dramatic yet humorous take on her story in regards to her family’s secret business and the hilarious connection she shares with her mother and her group of friends, dubbed “The Silver-Hair Gang,” the book becomes a thrilling blend of small-town life meets Breaking Bad.

The Review

This was a fantastic entry into the Dark Dreams series. The author does a phenomenal job of crafting a new narrative that keeps the character development and action of the first two books in the series while also laying the groundwork for more mythos and world-building to take center stage. The tension that builds over time and the way the author was able to bring new readers into the series effortlessly really set the tone for the entirety of the narrative.

The action and suspense of the story, the great strides the author made in enhancing the character’s story arcs in this new entry, and the creative and tense occult/supernatural abilities that take hold of the protagonist’s life made this story truly shine. The imagery of the author’s writing style allowed the gritty road aspect of the protagonist and her partner to meld with the city-based investigative work that the police detective brings to the table in this read.

The Verdict

Memorable, action-packed, and entertaining, author JP McLean’s “Scorch Mark” is a fantastic read and the perfect entry in the Dark Dreams series. The twists and turns, the wealth of world-building, and the haunting atmosphere will keep readers invested in this gripping tale. If you haven’t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!

This was a gritty, yet wonderful blend of dark psychological horror and fantasy. The harsh realities of cult life and the psychological trauma and mind games that occur for people lost in these groups were extensively explored in this novel, allowing the more fantastic and supernatural elements of the mythos of this world to feel grounded and engaging to readers.

The author did a remarkable job capturing gripping character development and vivid imagery in this novel. The Review

This was a fast-paced yet gripping read. The author does a remarkable job of capturing the suddenness and gripping nature of the mystery of this story while also delving into the heart of horse racing and life as a racehorse owner. The balance of these two worlds really speaks to a specific audience, while also leaving room for the general audience to get lost in this world and become enraptured with the narrative.

The heart of this story was the author’s incredible character development. The evolution of Janet as a character, who came from a life of domineering men in her life to gaining strength and resilience as a character showcases the powerful female protagonist she has become over time. The classic storytelling device of the protagonist becoming the main suspect in the case and the fight she takes on to not only prove her innocence but also stop two killers loose on the grounds of this hotel made this a compelling read.

The Verdict

Memorable, fast-paced, and engaging, author Sasscer Hill’s “Murder at the Willcotts Hotel” is a must-read novella and cozy mystery, as well as a great entry in the Janet Simpson Cozy Mysteries series. The twists and turns the narrative takes on and the gripping character twists that keep the action and suspense propelling forward made this a memorable read.
