Interview with Author Justine Johnston Hemmestad

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

I’m a mother of seven kids, five of them grown, and a grandmother of two beautiful boys. But years before all of that, when I was 19 and newly married, the car I was driving was hit by a city bus. I sustained a severe brain injury and nearly died; my prognosis was not good. However, being a mother a few years after, as well as writing, helped me to slowly recover. Almost 15 years after my brain injury I started college again and now I have a Master’s Degree in English Literature (I felt that if I wanted to hone my writing skills I needed to read and learn from the masters of the craft). 25 years after my car accident my first book was published, and now 32 years after my car accident my third book has just been published. So writing has essentially been my rehab.

2) What inspired you to write your book?

I was just learning that I have Scottish ancestry, and I also love Shakespeare and read that he had based the three witches in Macbeth on the Three Fates of ancient Greek lore. I thought that was so interesting and I asked, “What if…” which I wanted to explore. I felt there would be so many questions that would drive my story and there were. I’ve also always loved fantasy, so I knew those things would be the components for my story, but when I commissioned my oldest son Bradley Hemmestad to create a book cover for me was when I became really inspired – his art helped shape my story completely.

3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

That we learn from past, present, and future – I would love readers to see things in a way they hadn’t thought of before, through the lens of fascination.

4) What drew you into this particular genre?

The realm of possibility drew me to fantasy. I love history and the lessons that fill history, then embellishing that history within fantasy so I can stretch boundaries.

5) If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?

I think I would be too scared to sit down with any of the main characters in my book; I think they would find it hard to contain their innate power. I imagine Clotho as so otherworldly that she likely wouldn’t communicate on human terms and would probably lose patience, I also think that Apollo would be terrifying because there’s no earthly limit to his power the judgements he makes, and I think Macbeth would be frightening because he was driven by the fortitude of his ancestors and the passion in his beliefs. They would all be larger than life. I really included any questions I want to ask them in my book itself – like what are ancient Greek gods doing in medieval Scotland?

6) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

https://aelpress.com/index.php/2022/08/31/macbeths-spinners-cover-reveal/ and https://www.amazon.com/Macbeths-Spinners-Justine-Johnston-Hemmestad-ebook/dp/B0BGQXWJ7P/ref=sr_1_5?crid=234DTASM14KLR&keywords=Antimony+and+Elder+Lace+Press&qid=1664473594&sprefix=antimony+and+elder+lace+press%2Caps%2C102&sr=8-5  and https://www.facebook.com/JustineJohnstonHemmestadauthor in addition to the wonderful interviews I’ve been so lucky to give.

7) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Ask many, many questions of the characters in your story. They’ll reveal the direction they want to take. Listen to your dreams, like Toni Morrison did to write her masterpiece, Beloved. Don’t try to force your characters into a direction they don’t want to take or you’ll lose the sense of effortlessness that makes a story easy to get lost in.

8) What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

The future holds A LOT of writing. I’m trying to get the word out about my digital novel Macbeth’s Spinners, and I’m also working on another novel about the disappearance of Roanoke in early American history (I’m planning to infuse that story with fantasy as well).

Thank you for this interview, Anthony!

Macbeth’s Spinners by Justine Johnston Hemmestad Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

The legend of Macbeth gets a Greek Mythology twist when the three Fates merge to become one powerful woman as they flee the powerful gaze of a heartbroken god in author Justine Johnston Hemmestad’s “Macbeth’s Spinners”.

The Synopsis

Macbeth’s Spinners is a love story. And like most love stories, things surrounding the lovers can both influence and be influenced by the lovers and their emotions. You know the fallout that can happen among friends when a couple has a spat in the real world.

Now imagine if they were gods? Imagine if the lovers had the ability to influence time and fold the land and sea, and steer the course of a nation’s history?

What if Macbeth was guided to become king not by three elderly witches — but by the Three Fates of Greek Mythos that were transformed into a single woman of remarkable power?

The Review

This was such a powerful and well-done story. The author found a way to bridge the gap between gothic dark fantasy storytelling and epic mythological themes in a very natural way. The twist in Macbeth’s iconic story was such an inspired direction to take the narrative, as it directly spoke to the idea of fate and destiny (quite literally) in ways the original could only hint at. The historical context of the story mixed well with the mythos that the other half of the narrative embodied.

The character development and imagery played the largest roles here in this story. The game of cat and mouse played between the Fates, Apollo, and their pawn Macbeth all play well into the almost dismissive nature of these godlike figures to the everyday men and women, especially given the Fate’s desire to find a home and take care of its people, much as they did in their old lives. The redemptive nature of the narrative as time goes on and the heartfelt emotions that these powerful gods display help keep the story grounded in such a fantasy-driven world.

The Verdict

Thought-provoking, imaginative, and entertaining, author Justine Johnston Hemmestad’s “Macbeth’s Spinners” is a must-read gothic dark fantasy read. The expanded upon and new twist on both the iconic Shakespearean tale and the memorable Greek mythology was a pairing that fit together so well that it felt like reading a brand new story much of the time. The imagery and atmosphere the author created spoke to the grand stakes of the novel and the raw emotions that these powerful figures conjured up. William Shakespeare’s The Empire Striketh Back by Ian Doescher

Author Ian Doescher does it again, blending the infamous Bard’s style with the engrossing story of Star Wars with “William Shakespeare’s The
Empire Striketh Back”! Here is the synopsis:

Hot on the heels of the New York Times best seller William Shakespeare’s Star Wars comes the next two installments of the original trilogy:
William Shakespeare’s The Empire Striketh Back and William Shakespeare’s The Jedi Doth Return. Return to the star-crossed galaxy far, far away
as the brooding young hero, a power-mad emperor, and their jesting droids match wits, struggle for power, and soliloquize in elegant and
impeccable iambic pentameter. Illustrated with beautiful black-and-white Elizabethan-style artwork, these two plays offer essential reading for
all ages. Something Wookiee this way comes!

Star Wars fans all know the story by now. While the plot is the same, the words that are spoken make this an incredibly fresh story that I couldn’t
put down. My love of both Star Wars and Shakespeare made this a phenomenal read that was addicting to read, and makes me want to read the entire
series this way. If you love Star Wars and Shakespeare, this is the series for you, and Ian Doescher is a fantastic author who has brilliantly
brought this series to life once more, so be sure to pick up this book today!

William Shakespeare’s Star Wars by Ian Doescher Book Review

Like the cover says, “Verily, A New Hope”! That’s right everyone, the worlds of Shakespeare and Star Wars collide in author Ian Doescher’s
“William Shakespeare’s Star Wars”. Here is the synopsis:

MAY THE VERSE BE WITH YOU!

Return once more to a galaxy far, far away with this sublime retelling of George Lucas’s epic Star Wars in the style of the immortal Bard of
Avon. The saga of a wise (Jedi) knight and an evil (Sith) lord, of a beautiful princess held captive and a young hero coming of age, Star Wars
abounds with all the valor and villainy of Shakespeare’s greatest plays. ‘Tis a tale told by fretful Droids, full of faithful Wookiees and
fearsome Stormtroopers, signifying… pretty much everything.

Reimagined in glorious iambic pentameter, William Shakespeare’s Star Wars will astound and edify Rebels and Imperials alike. Zounds! This is
the book you’re looking for.

This was given to me as an early Christmas gift, and I have to say this is one of my all time favorite gifts I’ve ever gotten. I’ve always been
a fan of classic William Shakespeare works, and I’m a big fan of the Star Wars universe, and yet I had no idea these two things had been
combined into a novel before. Written as one of Shakespeare’s infamous plays, the story is beautifully translated into the unique word only
Shakespeare could speak. From the comic relief of characters like R2-D2 and C-3PO to the haunting inner monologues of characters like Han Solo,
Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi, this is the literary classic of the 21st century readers have been waiting for.

The themes explored in this book are Shakespearean themselves, delving into the complicated relationships between Luke and Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan and
Darth, and even hint at the unknown relationship between Darth and Luke. This book does a great job of delving into the darkness that has
consumed Darth Vader, something that is not done in the original film. Overall, this is a beautifully written retelling of an already classic
story in a voice that defines the word “classic” itself. This is a book that everyone should read, so be sure to pick up your copies of author
Ian Doescher’s “William Shakespeare’s Star Wars” today!
