1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?
I began writing because I enjoyed it and found I was good at it. The fact that major publishers agreed is scarcely pertinent. In the end, I do this better than anything else, and it’s easy. It’s easy to give utter effort to writing day after day, year after year, because that is how magic is made, not by casting spells or incanting charms.
Advertisements
2) What inspired you to write your book?
I wanted to write a novel that is warmer in the emotions the characters experience than is my norm. That entails developing settings and scenes less intense than my usual, but no less involving.
3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?
“Pay forward” is a profound idea. If you’re a witch, you can extend the substance of your spirit centuries ahead to find a subject worthy of your suicide.
4) What drew you into this particular genre?
See #2. Above and beyond that, the genre is literary fiction, the only type of writing I know, even when working on a kids’ book.
Advertisements
5) If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?
Screenshot
I would ask Connie if she thinks she’s a brat, because a lot of people feel that way about her, including the murderous jungle denizens who keep her alive. If I asked her that, however, it would make her cry; and I would hold her hand and say that things are just fine, because she may be a brat, but absolutely she is a hero. Then she would cry again, but she would be smiling now.
6) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?
The answer is none. I hate social media, and they hate me. If it weren’t made of pixels, I would like to burn SocialMedia down to the ground.
7) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?
First, read more. More than that. Read books and plays and poetry that are unfamiliar to you. Then, ask yourself why you want to be a writer. Because you want to do something pretty much like the last something you read? Because you can add to the world of expression and understanding? Because you grasp that the word “literature” wasn’t coined by authors who have created the most vital and valuable writings of their eras, but by their admirers? Because you wanna make a buck? The most important thing I can say is this: If you are truly a writer, you were born a writer. It has nothing to do with publishing.
8) What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?
I’m working on a series of children’s picture books starting with COLORBLIND DOGS: a kids’ book that kids would buy for their parents.

About the Author
H. C. Turk is a writer, sound artist, and visual artist. His novels have been published by Villard and Tor. His short fiction, sound pieces, movies, and visual art have appeared in numerous magazines, web-sites, podcasts, and film festivals. He used to paint houses (not as an art form.)
In these times we live in, it is so difficult to find a path or direction that feels true to who we are as a people. In the midst of untold war, greed, and divide amongst many nations, it is often a sense of self that falls to the wayside and makes moving forward in one’s own personal journey ten times more difficult. Being able to move with the changes in life and adapt and find new ways of reaching a destination is the best way forward when these challenges present themselves.
Finding oneself and reclaiming what made a person who they are when facing unknown paths is the driving force behind artist Doc Jazz’s “Unknown Destination.” The artist, well known as a surgeon and a multi-genre artist, has taken a large departure to create a concept album that is more jazzy and funky fun and driven emotionally. The nine-track album features hits like “Take My Word For It,” “You Do You”, and of course the title track “Unknown Destination,” which challenges audiences to not only find themselves but to trust in those around you to help you along the way as you find your own path in life.
One of my personal favorite tracks on the album is “Change,” which is more singer/songwriter driven with powerful vocals and acoustic guitar riffs that speak to the soul. The atmospheric song gives audiences a chance to embrace the changes that come our way, with lyrics like “Do You Sense the Mystery of What Is Yet to Come; The Breeze Erasing History, Time Beating Its Drum.” The song is equal parts emotional, mysterious, and feels like a jazzier and more hopeful sequel to Kansas’s “Dust in the Wind.”
What really stood out in this album was the artist’s unique way of fusing genres together so naturally. From the mix of horns into some tracks and the soul-touching bass featured on each track, to the soft melodies and perfect vocals that keep audiences hooked as these jazz and funk beats and soft rock tones hit the audience in both the feels and the heart. The album itself is a steady length of over a half hour, and each track feels like a single in itself, ready to ensnare audiences with heartfelt lyrics and soulful music that is impossible to escape from. Audiences will also be able to appreciate the technical skill the artist had when collaborating to put the album together as a whole, subtly adding additional tracks and layers of large scale band sounds to emphasize both the lighter and darker tones of each song. If you haven’t yet, be sure to preorder your copy of the album on Vinyl or pre-save the album today!

Four teens have their lives changed forever by one debate in author A-M Mawhiney’s “Fugitive Rifts.”
Advertisements
The Synopsis
Does everyone have secrets?
When four teens are invited to meet after school with a teacher, the butterfly effect of this one small event soon changes their dreams about their futures. Thrown together to form, of all things, a debate team, the four—Grace, a popular star basketball player, Drew, a privileged hotshot, Ollie, an artistic new student, and Dottie a shy, brilliant loner—seem to have nothing in common. And not one of them believes they have what it takes to be successful debaters.
Over time, the four teens start helping each other through tough times and begin to realize they are more alike than they thought.
Taking part in a public debate turns out to have unintended consequences that affect the four teens, each in different ways. Then the disappearance of one upends not only the lives of the four teens, but it also creates a ripple effect that shapes, over time, what happens to other people from their communities, their country—and even the world.
Fugitive Rifts is a compelling and empowering story of coming of age, resilience, and friendship, with emotional passages that are authentic, visceral, and bring the characters to life.
The Review
This is such a powerful, heartfelt read. The balance the author finds in giving these characters the time to bring their own unique perspectives and viewpoints to the narrative while also highlighting their own personal struggles was rich and powerful to read, and the engaging debates the characters have with one another really pushes the reader’s knowledge and brings to life real-world struggles and hardship that needs to be highlighted more.
The heart of this narrative is in the strong themes and character arcs this coming of age narrative puts on the page. The struggles of the characters reflect these themes, such as domestic violence, homelessness, and parental hardship, and the subtle tension that runs through this narrative helps keep readers on the edge of their seat and engaged in the lives these characters lead.
The Verdict
Insightful, emotionally-driven, and compelling, author A-M Mawhiney’s “Fugitive Rifts” is a must-read coming of age novel. The twists and turns the story takes, the heartfelt connection readers make to these characters, and the memorable events that drive them closer together will stay with readers long after the narrative ends. Explore the origins of the zombie apocalypse in author Jason Kristopher’s “The Walker Chronicles”, the fourth book and prequel to The Dying of the Light series.
Advertisements
The Synopsis
The zombie apocalypse didn’t begin on Z-Day—it’s been raging in secret for 150 years. From an 1872 military unit’s first walker encounter to Nazi experiments in concentration camps, from Cold War cover-ups to the final days before collapse, these classified stories reveal the conspiracy that doomed humanity. While the world slept, Unit 73 and AEGIS fought a shadow war against the walking dead. Some secrets should stay buried—but like the dead themselves, truth always rises.
The Walker Chronicles expands the universe of The Dying of the Light trilogy, uncovering the untold history of humanity’s fight against the walking dead. While David Blake’s journey in END, INTERVAL, and BEGINNING shows the apocalypse and its aftermath, these essential stories reveal the covert battles that raged for decades before Z-Day changed everything. Each tale deepens the conspiracy, heightens the horror, and illuminates the sacrifices made to keep humanity alive.
The Review
This was a fun and exhilarating addition to this incredible zombie horror series. The author does an amazing job of continuing to bring rich character dynamics to this universe while also implementing a historical fiction element to the mix. The action and horror of this zombie virus is perfectly brought to life through strong imagery in the author’s writing, and the short story aspect of the book’s formatting allowed the reader to fully experience the world in which this virus thrived.
The heart of this narrative was in the historical fiction aspect of the genre and the world building that took place. Each story in this collection helms from a different era of history, and one that was truly chilling was the 1940s, exploring Joseph Mengele and the way his real-life atrocities during WWII could have been implemented into the zombie virus world. The way these events played into the main series and how the virus eventually overcame the world, as well as the formation of the organization that has fought this virus for so long, was powerful and engaging.
The Verdict
Memorable, entertaining, and visceral, author Jason Kristopher’s “The Walker Chronicles” is a must-read historical fiction meets action horror novel and a great addition to the “Dying of the Light” series. The haunting imagery and fast pacing of each story, and the compelling characters that the author both introduces and expands upon, will keep readers enthralled through the book’s end. Learn how to recognize and use AI productively while maintaining your own identity and not losing what it means to be human in author J.D. Macpherson’s “Human Again: In the A.I. Age.”
Advertisements
The Synopsis
Are you using AI or is AI using you?
In a world where algorithms shape thought and automation floods the creative field, Human Again is a field-tested playbook for staying awake, original, and alive in the age of machines. Part reflection, part practical guide, it invites readers to explore identity and inspiration in real time, learning to think with AI rather than be replaced by it.
Blending cultural insight, personal experience, and practical tools, Macpherson explores how artificial intelligence is reshaping creativity, work, and identity, and how to harness it without losing yourself.
You will learn how to:
Ask sharper questions that create leverage, not noise
Build a High Signal Question Engine to think deeper and faster
Use the Socratic method and mindfulness to train deeper thinking
Recognize the “qualia,” the unspeakable textures of human experience, that no algorithm can touch
Protect your authenticity, taste, and voice while others sound the same
Learn how to compound clarity and creativity
Whether you are a professional, a creator, or simply curious about what is next, Human Again shows how to use AI better than anyone around you while keeping what no algorithm can replicate: your judgment, conscience, and imagination.
Because finding identity and inspiration in the AI age begins with remembering what it means to be human.
The Review
This book was so insightful and engaging right from the start. One of the most difficult debates in recent years has been the use of A.I. and both the good and bad it does for humanity. While extremes paint AI as the future SKYNET promised in the hit film franchise The Terminator, the negatives being focused on right now is AI replacing jobs and humans altogether in professional spaces. Yet the author refocuses that conversation, exploring the need to work in tandum with AI as not just a tool, but a partner to unlock one’s own potential and success in work.
The thing that resonated with me in this book was the clear and conversational tone of the author’s writing style and the techniques the author displayed in working with AI. The techniques included INK, or Insight, Not Knowledge, which utilizes AI to provide more depth to the answers being provided instead of just quick solutions, and the Socratic method, which asks AI to look for hidden meaning or point out mistakes that may have been overlooked, and these are just two examples of the insights the author provides.
The Verdict
Thoughtful, engaging, and memorable, author J.D. Macpherson’s “Human Again: In the AI Age” is a must-read nonfiction narrative that readers can get invested in. AI is not going away, and for this reader, I’ve always believed it was not the AI that we would fear, but like all technology, the humans who abuse it. Learning to work with AI and use it not to replace us but work in concert with it, and explaining how no matter what AI is able to create, it takes humanity to give it actual meaning, making humanity’s role in AI use truly valuable. Author Albert Seligman reintroduces the classic tale of Arabian Nights using original artwork and translations, as well as over 50 unique illustrations, in the book “SCHEHERZADE: A TALE FROM THE ARABIAN NIGHTS.”
Advertisements
The Synopsis
“No one knows where the tales were written, except that they came out of the Far East, India, Arabia and Persia. Haroun Al Raschid, who was called The Just, was a real Eastern monarch who lived in Baghdad over eleven hundred years ago, about the same time that Charlemagne was King of France. We can believe that the tales are very old, but the most we know is that they were translated from Arabic into French in 1704-17 by a Frenchman named Galland, and that the manuscript of his translation is preserved in the French National Library. American boys first had the chance to read the notes in English about the time President Monroe was elected.” (1817) (The Junior Classics, Volume 5: Stories that never grow old, Editor William Patten, 1912).
SCHEHERAZADE
A TALE FROM THE ARABIAN NIGHTS
Dulacebooks’ new Arabian Nights series presents these tales decorated with the illustrations from the original editions of the Victorian and Golden Age. Over fifty different illustrators’ versions of these stories are reproduced here, fully restored and many in full color. These are the finest examples of the artists and illustrators of the Arabian Nights, including-
Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Kay Nielsen, René Bull , Maxfield Parrish, William H Robinson, Thomas H Robinson, Charles Robinson, Thomas Mackenzie, Walter Crane, Louis Rhead, Helen Stratton, Virginia Frances Sterrett, Elizabeth Mackinstry, John Gilbert, HJ Ford, Edward J Detmold, Eric Pape, AE Jackson, Willy Pogany, Milo Winter, Monroe S Orr, Charles Folkard, Walter Paget, William Stang, JD Batten, Frances Brundage, Gustav Dore, FOC Darley, William Harvey, the Brothers Dalziel, and many others.
The first book in the series is how the 1001 nights begin, with Scheherazade and her sister weaving the tales to her new husband Schahriar, the Sultan. The Tales in this edition are:
The Sultan and his Vow
The Fable of the Ass, the Ox, and the Laborer
The Story of the Merchant and the Genie
The History of the First Old Man and the Hind
The History of the Second Old Man and the two Black Dogs
The Review
This book was so beautifully restored and written. The beautiful illustrations on each page were so unique and compelling, allowing the reader to feel immersed in these stories and the legends being told. The overall narrative of this sultan and his cruel turn and the young woman determined to find a way to stop his cruelty was a great way to allow the other stories to come to life, and the father’s tales helped shape the cruel nature of the world around them as he tries to desperately save his daughter from a choice that could cost her everything.
What really made this story shine was not just the narrative and unique characters, but the cultural exploration and history that went into the book itself. The stories being told come from centuries before, and each illustration and translation of the original texts showcase the level of depth and detail the author put into bringing these classics to life once more. The imagery depicted in the book coming from both the Victorian age and the Golden Age made the stories feel more mythological in a way, and the lessons taught through these fables felt even more impactful in a world seeing so much injustice at the moment.
The Verdict
Culturally-impactful, thoughtful, and engaging, author Albert Seligman’s “SCHEHERAZADE: A TAPE FROM THE ARABIAN NIGHTS” is a must-read restoration of a classic collection of fables. The rich history and context around these stories, and the heartfelt underlying story of a father trying to protect his daughter from a cruel fate helps elevate the powerful imagery and high stakes these tales represented. About the Author
I am a lifelong fan of illustrated books and magazines and passed many pleasant hours collecting books and sharing information and images with fellow collectors and dealers. I was especially interested in the “Golden Age of Illustration” between 1875-1925. I was a strong collector of Edmund Dulac illustrated books, and was able to photograph the complete collection of his ‘American Weekly’ magazine illustrations from the San Francisco Academy of Comic Art owned by Bill Blackbeard. ‘The American Weekly’ was the Sunday supplement for the WR Hearst newspaper chain, and boasted over 50 million readers in over 20 major markets. The complete collection of 106 illustrations is now housed at The Ohio State University in the Billy Ireland Comic Art Museum. These ‘American Weekly’ illustrations have rarely appeared in print since their publication, and this is the first complete edition.
These print editions and eBooks are intended to make more of Edmund Dulac’s beautiful watercolors and illustrations available for everyone to enjoy. The publishing business has changed considerably over the last 30 years and by taking advantage of digital technology I have been able to publish many of his famous and lesser known illustrations in my editions.
The restored collection of all 106 American Weekly front covers is available as “The American Weekly Covers of Edmund Dulac- 100th Anniversary Edition” as both an eBook and paperback. A fully restored crop of each illustration is available in the series of six smaller books, also published as an eBook or paperback. These are grouped by themes, and includes the original newspaper caption or story, when available. Some original Dulac artwork and sketches are also included.
The final publication of the series is “Edmund Dulac His American Weekly Collection” written with an introduction by Ann Hughey, who wrote the bibliography of Dulac’s book illustrations. This features the illustrations cropped and fully restored, with the original newspaper captions. All of the final series ‘Tales from the Arabian Nights’ from 1951 stories are also included.
As I wind down editions of Dulac’s ‘American Weekly’ artwork, I’ll be publishing more of other Golden Age Illustrators. “Arabian Nights Illustrated” is my first book of the series including fifty other illustrators who illustrated editions of the 1001 nights in English language editions between 1800-1950. The illustrations follow the history of printing images in books, from the earliest copper engravings through woodblocks and the development of color printing through photoproduction. I published six more Arabian Nights books, all with illustrations by Victorian and Golden Age artists and illustrators. All are available as both paperbacks and eBooks.
If anyone is wondering if I am the same author of “The Sport Band System”, indeed I am. Unfortunately, the Sport Bands are no longer being produced. After writing this instruction manual I spent my last years in the training profession at UCSF in the Dept. of Neurology. There I had the privilege of working with medical professionals and patients developing physical training rehabilitation programs for MS, stroke, PD, SCI and other neurological related maladies. I retired in 2008 and now I am enjoying my “Golden Years” working with the Dulac eBooks project.

A young boy dreams of dancing in author Suchi Sairam’s “Singing Surya Dreams to Dance.”
Advertisements
The Synopsis
Surya likes to sing. But he LOVES to dance. There’s only one problem. Surya is a boy. And boys don’t dance.
Or do they?
The Review
This was an uplifting and moving children’s book read. The author does a remarkable job of conveying a sense of heart and passion into the story, infusing warm imagery and great insight into what life a child is like, both for everyday life and for those from other cultures as well. The characters feel relatable and make the reader feel connected to both the story and the life experiences the story conveys. The depth of culture the author poured into this book was amazing as well.
What really stood out was the powerful themes of this narrative. The exploration of peer pressure, identity, and following one’s dreams is very prevelant throughout the book, giving readers a chance to see how the opinions of our peers and the world around us often hinder a person’s desire to follow their dreams or passions in life. Yet the book celebrates what makes people different, and encourages children to explore those passions with zeal and bravery. The courage and positive message the story drives home and even exploring how often ideas about what certain things are associated with certain genders and how that can impact a person exploring their passions made a strong statement in this book.
The Verdict
Thoughtful, uplifting, and engaging, author Suchi Sairam’s “Singing Surya Dreams to Dance” is a must-read children’s illustrated book. The steady pacing of the narrative, rich imagery, and the memorable themes the story explores will keep young readers entertained and help educate them on how to embrace their identities and celebrate what makes them different. The Review
Such an inspiring and empowering read. The author does a remarkable job of writing in a way that feels both conversational and uplifting all at once, relating to the reader his own personal struggles with maintaining his identity and not letting others erase who he is, while also showing the reader the steps that can lead to someone owning themselves and building a brand that reflects that. The author’s writing conveys a tone of duality, that of understanding and a fast-paced fire that instantly motivates the reader.
The author’s emphasis on the importance of the self and self-expression was remarkable. The creativity the author uses in utilizing stories from history and mythology, from the Rubicon River Caesar himself crossed to the rising of the Phoenix, and so much more, was enthralling and memorable. The reader is not only able to connect to the author, but the author is able to balance the reader’s ability to build self-confidence with the skills they need to turn that confidence into a brand that works for them.

Inspiring, authentic, and engaging, author Harveer Singh’s “You Are Unforgettable” is a must-read nonfiction book.
