The Catalogue wasn’t meant to exist.
It’s a classified registry of the world’s deadliest mercenaries — operatives embedded across governments, corporations, and criminal syndicates.
And it’s been stolen.
When a brutal homicide in the Catskills of New York exposes ties to a clandestine mercenary network known only as V.E.N.O.M. (Veiled and Exclusive Nation of Organized Mercenaries), NYPD detective Jake Penny is drawn into a covert conflict far beyond rural crime scenes and police tape.
As bodies surface and operatives mobilize to recover the stolen file, Jake is pulled into a shadow war he recognizes more than he should. Intelligence agencies scramble to contain the breach. A ruthless NSA handler begins tightening the perimeter. And someone inside the network believes Jake knows far too much.
The deeper he digs, the clearer the danger becomes: in the world of V.E.N.O.M., exposure isn’t containment.
It’s elimination.
The Review
A truly enthralling and compelling thriller, this novel draws the reader into a cat-and-mouse game that escalates to a whole other level. The balance between world-building and character development, combined with the dynamic storyline, made this feel like a Netflix series waiting to be adapted. The slow-burning pacing that allows the reader to get to know these characters and their struggles, combined with sudden bursts of action and tension, creates a very atmospheric narrative that delivers a suspenseful tone and a harrowing sense of action.
The character development was top-notch in this narrative, and really became the heart of this story. Jake was the perfect protagonist, deeply flawed due to trauma and grief as that grief turned to alcoholism, and yet his brilliance as a detective brought him further and further into this web of lies and deceit. The chilling demeanor of Jun Li and the organization V.E.N.O.M., which opens this narrative, was haunting and lent the entire story a more cinematic quality in its imagery and atmosphere. Zasha was a perfect balance to this equation, adding that investigative journalist vibe that challenges the narrative and paints a target on her back, bringing her closer to Jake in the process.
The Verdict
Thrilling, memorable, and entertaining, author Ty Mitchell’s “The Catalogue” is a must-read suspense thriller. The twists and turns the story takes, the depth of the emotional character dynamics and world-building the author brings to life on the page, and the cinematic action sequences this narrative delivers will stay with readers long after the book ends.
