The Synopsis

Leopard Kali’s first swimming lesson is a disaster! Lost in the jungles of the Congo, with Momma nowhere in sight, Kali has to find her way back home before sundown.

Fortunately, she is not alone in her quest, thanks to a vibrant cast of jungle denizens, each with quirks of their own.

Towering elephants and elusive bongos are charming to talk to, but will Kali find Momma in time?

The Review

This was a heartwarming and engaging children’s book. The author created a vast cast of characters that perfectly represented the jungle environment in which this narrative takes place, and the way each animal was represented was able to give readers a sense of what their function in the jungle was, and how they survived was a great educational tool to incorporate naturally into the story.

The warm color scheme of the illustrations was a great way to bring the jungle’s wildness to life on the page, while also balancing the heartfelt story of Kali and their journey to find their mother. The themes of this story help younger readers learn to educate themselves about their surroundings and the environment, appreciate nature, and showcase the powerful connection between a parent and their child.

The Verdict

Memorable, heartfelt, and engaging, “Jungle Kali” by author Amie White is a must-read children’s book. The beautiful illustrations by artist Olena Oprich, along with the love and appreciation shown for the jungle and the animals who live within it, make this a compelling children’s read that young readers won’t be able to get enough of.
