The Review
This was a gripping, tense, folkloric horror read. The author perfectly underscored the heavy atmosphere the characters found themselves in by introducing powerful supernatural forces that kept the reader on the edge of their seat. The haunting atmosphere and rich story were greatly brought to life using detailed imagery that made this small town come to life on the page. The mystery behind the townspeople’s strange behavior and the paralyzing nightmares that plague this small family becomes a driving force for a more powerful mythology rooted in folklore.
At the heart of this novel, however, was the dynamic character development. The tragedy that shapes this small family’s circumstances, the exploration of grief as a whole, and how it impacts families made these horror elements feel more impactful and terrifying, as readers were able to identify with and connect to the characters. The emotional impact of the loss this mother and her son have and her bond with her father-in-law later on in the book, are perfectly brought to life, and the way this influences the overall journey they go on together as they face this supernatural threat is so impactful and inviting as the reader goes further and further into the story.
The Verdict
Haunting, compelling, and thrilling, author Alan Golbourn’s “From Under The Stairs” is a must-read folklore-horror tale not to be missed. The twists and turns of the narrative, along with the compelling atmosphere of the setting, draw readers into the world the author has created. The emotional impact these characters have, and the shocking supernatural force they face, will keep readers invested until the book’s final pages.
