THE REVIEW

Well, this is a compelling, gripping dystopian sci-fi novel; it is also shockingly relevant and intriguing given the recent events of the past decade in our world. The author does a great job of balancing character development with world-building and powerful themes of scientific advancement, health care, and the role young people play in the future of our society. The role of genetics also plays a heavy hand in this novel and does a great job of offering the reader an immersive experience as they are shown a bleak yet inviting sci-fi dystopian world.

At its heart, the story is very character-driven. The main protagonist’s struggle to protect her family while keeping herself and her allies safe as they are hunted simply for existing adds to the narrative’s tension and atmosphere. The older boy, who serves as a protector and ally, adds drama and a hint of romance, allowing the protagonist herself to become a stronger and more compelling heroine that readers can really root for.

THE VERDICT

Dynamic, epic in scale, and thoughtful in design, author Tricia Copeland’s “Lovelock Ones” is a must-read dystopian sci-fi novel. The compelling, gripping world-building and strong themes of genetics, science, and healthcare allow the more grounded character dynamics in the relationships that form throughout this journey to shine brightly, keeping readers fully immersed and eager for the next entry in the series.
