A magic fixer must clear her name after being accused of a heinous crime in author Deborah Wilde’s “Made in the Shade,” Book Two in the Magic After Midlife series.

The Synopsis

Miriam Feldman’s got a murder to solve, a mouthy golem to corral, and her name to clear. Quite frankly, she’s swamped.

Her new gig as a fixer for the magic community is a lot like being a full-time mom to someone else’s kids… they get annoying faster but don’t respond to guilt trips. And sure, maybe she feels kind of grumpy and stabby about these irritating jobs, but that doesn’t mean she killed her latest client!

As far as the magic police are concerned, Miri and her wolf shifter friend Laurent might as well have “guilty of murder” tattooed on their foreheads. If they lose this fight, it’ll be a one-way trip to Deadman’s Island. Talk about a real buzzkill for their easy banter and deepening chemistry.

Even worse, the non-magic cops are also investigating the crime—and her ex-husband is the lead detective. This wasn’t how she meant to pop his cherry about the existence of magic, but the time for foreplay is over.

To unmask the real killer, she’ll have to navigate hidden agendas, lies, and the undead. But hey, she’s faced worse; she used to be on the PTA.

Featuring a smart older heroine with zero effs left to give, laugh-out-loud banter, and a swoony shifter romance, this clever mix of urban fantasy and mystery will have you bingeing ‘just one more chapter.’

THE REVIEW

The witty and humorous character dynamics are still well at play here, and this novel is about real-world and magical threats that the protagonist and her allies must face. This richly developed novel does a great job of balancing magic and supernatural elements with a real-world setting, and the reader is given a sense of immersion and a tense atmosphere as the narrative unfolds.

Yet it is the character development that really shines through, as it did in the first book. The protagonist becoming the magical fixer of her new community and being framed for a crime she didn’t commit give her a unique perspective and sense of urgency in this novel, which is a great Jeff position to the slow burn romance, still at work here as readers are on the edge of their seats, eager to see her new love story take flight as she must also contend with her old love and introducing him to her new world.

THE VERDICT

Magical, entertaining, and richly tense, Author Deborah Wilde’s “Made in the Shade” is a must-read fantasy and supernatural novel with a slow-burning romance that is impossible to miss. The unique twists and turns the story takes, the exploration of the protagonist’s backstory and the mystery behind it, and the witty yet heartfelt relationship between the protagonist and her ally, Laurent, will stay with readers and keep them eager for the next entry in the series. About the Author

Deborah Wilde is a global wanderer and hopeless romantic. After twelve years as a screenwriter, she was also a total cynic with a broken edit button, so, she jumped ship, started writing funny, sexy, urban fantasy and paranormal women’s fiction novels, and never looked back.

She loves writing smart, flawed, wisecracking women who can solve a mystery, kick supernatural butt, banter with hot men, and still make time for their best female friend, because those were the women she grew up around and admired. Granted, her grandmother never had to kill a demon at her weekly friend lunches, but Deborah is pretty sure she could have.

Smart (ass) heroines. Epic magic. Red-hot romance.
